    The only intellectual equal to Toronaga was the Taiko, how brilliant to put these particular people on the Council

    Im a bit 50/50 for Lady Ochiba, she either has an agenda of her own or she is secretly in kahoots with Toranaga. Ngl, her performance was amazing, her "fake smile" combined with her "motherly" tone makes her more terrifying, basically an embodiment of deception and ambition.
    I recall in the second episode that she was arranged to be for Toranaga before she was made to be the concubine for the Taiko as stated by the Taiko before his passing.

      The real Ochiba which is Yodo-dono wants to make sure that the lineage of the late taiko will be maintained given that he is the mother of the heir. She also came from Oda Nobonaga's family as she is his maternal uncle so she wants political power nonetheless. If this is somewhat a retelling of the actual event, Ochiba (Yodo-dono) is definitely against Toranaga (Tokugawa) as their clans are always at odds which leads us to this war story.

    the death of the gardener would be the plot device needed for Blackthorne to mature in the sense of responsibility and the weight of his words and actions. Side note: dry aging pheasants by hanging it for a week or so ith its feathers is a thing, as it soften's the meat of wild game and improves the flavour.
    So Fuji (best WAIFU, fight me) apparently was aware of the thing between him and Mariko (Yes it was Mariko who went and did the yobai with John on the previous episode) , and still does his best to serve. so when Buntaro came back (I was actually surprised how early he revealed he was alive, and not the fact he was alive), she asks Mariko to tell her if ever his host was in danger (subtext, if Buntaro were to lash out to john in anger if and when he finds out about the infidelity) as she is duty bound to protect the Hatamoto.
    that drinking contest, which is usually a form of male bonding, really wouldn't get Buntaro and Blackthorne to be closer together, as the latter got to transparent in showing her affection for Mariko; even the whole shooting thing was very telling as John shows his concern for Mariko openly in a culture where propriety takes precedence over anything, thus the beating.
    Next comes the whole 4D chess that's happening with Toranaga handling things in the aftermath of his son's blunder. Genius. He used it as an opportunity to
    1. teach his son an important lesson;
    2. flush out whoever manipulated his son to action;
    3. pit Yabushige against his nephew Omi by having the uncle tell his nephew that the young guy was to take control of the artillery regiment instead of him.
    then near the end there's that cute part where Toranaga was SOOOOOOOO not interested to mediate on the bickering or whatever problem he sensed between Mariko and Blackthorne, considering how commited John was to get his aid against the Catholics to just ask to be set free to leave Japan permanently.
    Then there's the whole power move of the Taiko's Heir's mother as soon as she arrived in Osaka and talking to Ishido.

    So far this is the best series I have seen in the last decade....I absolutely love the Japanese and english culture colliding like it does in this show, how words can be lost in translation, how people view life and death and the differences in culture like irony, sarcasm and how things are inturpreted based on culture.

    I always enjoy watching the reactions. Thank you.
    I highly recommend you come to Japan and see for yourself.
    You can see the buildings of that time and see the spirit of that time in modern Japan.
    I feel that this spirit still remains among the Japanese people.
    The act of respecting others and not disturbing the harmony (group) is still alive today.
    All Japanese people are aware that their city is beautiful.
    Additionally, the restaurant service industry has a spirit of ``omotenashi'' that provides maximum hospitality.
    Thank you very much.(^o^)v In Japan.

    the situation with Mariko's family is very sad, because of her father's actions, he had shamed his entire family and tarnished the family's reputation and honor, therefore he was forced to murder his whole family and himself to atone for his treachery. But because Mariko was already married she was saved from being executed herself, because once she married Buntaro she belonged to her husband's family and no longer belonged to her own family, so she was spared. However Mariko feels that it is an "injustice" that she is still alive while her whole family are dead because being the daughter of a traitor is shameful and due to their customs Mariko should've been killed as well along with her family. She said she wanted to kill herself every year on the anniversary of her family's murder, but her husband forces her to live. Everyday she is alive she is forced to live with the shame & guilt of what her father did. To Mariko, it is alot more painful & traumatic & shameful for her to be alive than it is for her to die, that's why up until this point she has wanted to die for a long time, hence why she had been so miserable with her life and sees her herself being alive as more of a "punishment".

    Im so happy fuji wasnt dead from the Earthquake.
    Im calling it,everyone of Blackthornes men are dead. Mariko repeatedly is mistranlating his words when he brings it up.
    The reveal of the Spy being a hidden Samurai underneath Torunaga's service is a great twist as well.
    But John leaving a dead bird up for 7 days was so stupid,he shouldve thoroughly explained it through Mariko at some point.

    I honestly dont find the situation of mariko and fuji funny at all, i find it very disturbing when i see how women were treated in an extreme Patriarchy society..basically just slaves in plain sight.

      that's basically how it was in many countries not just in Japan, throughout history women were severely oppressed, married off at very young ages and treated as just properties to their controlling husbands, they had no freedom and no choices. Women were not even allowed to vote until the 1920s in many places.
