If someone looped this song for 10 hours I would listen to it. Beautiful. Minimal. Timeless.
I've done it.
Me too ❤
Of all of the songs he's written, I think this is one of his best.
certainly one of the best...there are so many good ones!
Yeah my thoughts too, this guy has so many great songs its hard to pick out the best ones
Born and raised in jacksonville nc, he is singing about a street called hotel street in that had bars, tattoo parlors, and strip clubs, aimed for all the soliders from the huge military base in this town I'm a apprentice in this town and its amazing to hear about the legends that have tattooed in this town, business is booming, the hotels on hotel street were for marines who would have too much to drink and needed a place to stay, they closed the place down in order to clean up the town
Whiskeytown can not be replaced. That blend of rock/country/punk music is priceless. Thank You Gram...(and Dave)...
Born and raised in Jacksonville as well. I always chuckle a bit when Ryan drops some references about this city. In a city full of idiots who claim they just want to get the fuck out, it's good to hear a musician like Ryan look back on it with affection.
Shit man, im from upstate new york and that song is all about my youth
I am from New Bern man, I just wish Ryan would comeback to nc and play a show.
I realize Im pretty off topic but does anybody know a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@@edwardrodney254 Ryan did pick up strongly on television music
Ryan has such a a real skill at making songs feel like home
This kid's got it! You can hear Dylan, Neil young, Southern Rock, Flok...and a lot more. You dont see that now-a-days. He's really gonna be something.
I watched this show over and over again when I discovered this wonderful man. I never get tired of it!
The fact that some of you are bitching about the fact that he says "soldiers" instead of "Marines" is proof enough that not everyone is cut out to be a songwriter. It's a piece of art.
It aint about "soldiers" man. Theres a lot of metaphor in his music. Is he really a soldier on the weekend? No. Its a metaphor.
I'm a fucking Marine... and I couldn't give any less fucks. We all know what he's trying to say. Changing it to Marine doesn't serve anything but to make it sound stupid.
Ryan is the reason NASA didnt go back to the moon. Figured we got what we need down here.

🥇🥇🥇
Somewhere the night sky hangs like a blanket. Shoot it with my cap gun just to make it seem like stars.
Just brilliant.
Always feel at peace when I hear this song
darkheartlightsoul me too.
Kudos to the engineers....this song sounds amazing, one of the best live performances I have heard on a V show video.
He is the soundtrack of my sad life sometimes, I appreciate it so much.!
I love everything about this artist... such a nostalgic sound.. gets me every time.
From the first note he sings. He kills it. Thanks for his buddy!
I'm glad he's started doing Whiskeytown songs again
I think Adams unfairly gets the douchebag label from back in the I'm-going-to-call-uo-critics-and-violently-threaten them days. He was a troubled young kid with a drug habit, but he's grown into one of the best artists of his generation.
Gosh that's a great song.
An amazing talent. This is a great version!
yeah hard, it really makes his live acts what they are, one minute your laughing next minute your transported into a room of emotion and then he goes and brings ya back down to earth again. I have seen many many bands and performers live but Ryan has got to be in the top 5 can't wait to see him again
Guy’s a freak! So envious of his talent
This is perfection.
RA revisiting Whiskeytown days is the best thing ever.
Lovely !!!
I was born in an abundance of inherited sadness, great line. My son in law lived in Jacksonville was friends with Ryan and his older brother when he was about ten
Letterman had great 👍😃 taste in music 🎶
You don't see a lot of musicians today that can have people laughing in-between songs and weeping during. This man is a true artist!
That old Harmony Sovereign sounds damn fine.
+prinecash It does, doesn't it? That was my very first guitar I ever owned at age 12. I didn't have a double pickguard but otherwise...
Damn what a great song this is.
I’ve listened to this over 200 times.
Beautiful song.
Dudes a legend. No other way to put it.
I was born into an abundance of inherited sadness . . .
Great line....
every single time. it hits so hard it hurts , yet, somehow soothes
This was not written specific to Ryans’hometown: my experience was Jacksonville Florida
And this is my storyline, Ryan Adams music
I feel ya!
Raising the roof and breaking down the fourth wall... Only JS could do it. Splendid.
this kills!
chills
Pure Bliss.....
Ryan Adams is clearly under rated. Thank You David Letterman. There are a few celebs that exude good musical taste (jazz and classical aside). Like the way Steven King "gets" James McMurtry and/or Slaid Cleaves. True Singer Songwriters are impressive! They come from everywhere - TX (Guy Clark) to NJ (The Boss)...
Here we go with the "underrated" stuff again. That word is tired.
He's not a car salesaman, he's a musician. He speaks through his songs, if that's not enough for you don't see his shows. I don't see why people think they have ownership or rights over a musician because they purchase his music or attend their shows.
3:12 ...magic
This is for all the vets who spent a lonely weekend in a strange town
Love it
pure talent
Banks of the river run through my hometown
As a boy I ran the dirt roads, and I scraped my knees
They paved the roads eventually
With neon signs and car dealerships and diners
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town
Well, I moved away soon as I turned sixteen
Figured I was old enough to go to work a job
I wandered down main street, pools of carlights
Overcame me, wishin' I was still back home
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town
Well, Jacksonville's a city with a hopeless streetlight
Seems like you're lucky
If it ever change from red to green
I was born in an abundance of inherited sadness
And 50-cent picture frames bought at a five and dime
I ended up a soldier on the weekend
Looking for a vacancy I was unable to find
Somewhere the night sky hangs like a blanket
Shoot it with my capgun just to make it
Seem like stars
This was one of his peaks. I know he's got more peaks and valleys in him. It comes in waves.
listen to the FUCKING TONE on that guitar
People use 'soldiers' as a generic term for 'members of the military.' It's a colloquialism, informal speech that means no harm. Most people outside the military aren't knowledgeable or sensitive to the differences between soldier/marine/airman etc. No reason to take offense to it.
Holy fuck.
effortless
Indeed! I am also right.
I wrote this about Jacksonville, Fl… I don’t recall what I made provenance to that and curious he’s supposedly singing about N Car
What a FUCKING voice
3:00 - 3:54 is just bliss
actually its not called hotel street. Its called Court St. and they have long since renovated it ...
I wrote this with Jacksonville Florida in mind but that doesn’t really matter
He's like a new Don Mclean !!!!!
it's in a lower key, than the studio version :)
Is that tuned down?
gotta get the roof fixed
dont worry the one dislike was from Ryan himself.. the moody mare!
@mimisixtyfour Das denke ich auch. Echt schoen!
At least he can still the high notes!
Any more proof needed he is the Real Deal or are we all still hypnotised by mediocrity like ed sheeran ???
your comment is absolutely spot on....Ed Sheeran is a joke
Ed Sheeran is just his own person with his own voice. Nothing wrong with that. The garden can't be populated with only one flower. That certain doesn't negate the incredible genius of Ryan Adams. I was once lucky to hear him recording in studio in Los Angeles as he was striking out on his own and leaving Whiskeytown behind. His lyrics are definitely genius... something that speaks to the heart from the heart.
Is Ed Shereen even mediocre??
yes..
Ryan Adams is one in a million,no doubt about it. His body of work phenomenal,, lyrically he stands as tall as Dylan,Paul Simon,Robbie Robertson,Woodie Guthrie,, there are so many more,I only mention American songwriters, because I for one believe that Ryan Adams is quintessentialy an American poet....however there have been outstanding lryicists and songwriters to come out of England,,and Ed Sheeran is one of them,,,be fair and read the lyrics of his
A friend of mine grew up with Ryan and his older brother in Jacksonville, his name id John Ford. John knew his grandmother also said she drove s big black Chrysler. He said Ryan was a cool guy.
Dude you are something behind a keyboard.
@dwinkle99 Why is he a douche bag? He's one of the few famous musicians I find that does not pander to their own celebrity, he may be awkward but he can take that awkwardness and turn it into a damn good song.
However, I believe Jacksonville is home to marines, not soldiers. Oh well.
He apparently missed that they weren't soldiers - they were Marines. There is a difference.
Start from 1.01
Close your eyes and listen to him say “…unable to find” and tell me that’s not Neil Young you hear
Hey Manual......get a musical taste bud dude.
f*** you
+Manual Batt haha man I understand now... the "liked" music vids of urs on your youtube include: Tech N9ne, Everlast, and some dumb ass Django imposter... hype vid!?? lmfao. smh. bad look brother.
Drugs make everything better.
Sorry but I have lived in Jacksonville NC for 15 years and singing about soldiers when this is a city that is home to one of the largest Marine base and Air Station is just wrong. Being a song writer and story teller I am sure he could have changed the word soldier to Marine.
+Gamecockinnc1 "The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends"
"I ended up a soldier on the weekend"
'Marines' just doesn't flow as well, doesn't quite evoke the same imagery either. Call it artistic licence.
Is it better calling out Marines for seeking out prostitutes? I am a Marine and lived in Jacksonville.
nah that would not be a very good line
He's a songwriter. Not Stephen Ambrose. Give him a break.
I think it’s endearing. He’s singing from the perspective of being 16, just dropped out/ moved out. He wouldn’t have necessarily known the difference between a soldier and a marine at that point, they were “soldiers” to him. For me, it really works.
Always seemed phony to me
nah bro
Paul Hobbs who can take him seriously with that hair?
Kenn Hiser oh i dunno... perhaps a lot of people. considering he has amassed one of the most impressive bodies of songwriting work these past 15 years or so with bad hair makes me take him even more seriously.
Kenn Hiser listen to "come pick me up" and tell me he's phony
Paul Hobbs you can be a phony and still write well...he has a long reputation as a self centered douche. That haircut ain't helping his case. Tween.
