I've using debian for more than 20 years and the only thing that I 100% agree is about hardware requirements... BUT! windows has much more user friendly software installation and management, better desktop experience (if you have the required hardware to run it of course). User and folder permision on windows is by far easier for beginers. Linux distros are by far better (in some scenarios) for advanced users. However for casual user, there is no contest between linux distros and windows.

    1. linux is only really more performant on old hardware. they are pretty much the same decent hardware you would actually want to use. also the battery life is just a straight out lie. those battery savers work by crippling your performance. there are sooo many reports from people saying how linux destroys their battery life.
    2. portability of a desktop os is really not a high priority for 99% of people
    3. i agree on customization though you can do more on windows than you might think
    4. package managers on windows have existed for ages now and they are better than some linux package managers like apt and faster than dnf or zypper.
    5. while i agree on privacy, i disagree on security. a default linux installation is pretty much not set up against cyber attacks.
there are great reasons to use linux but idk if those would be for me

1 thing with windows I tried to migrate my win11 boot ssd to a larger ssd used clonezilla... then it booted up on the large ssd and it seemed to work fine.... but when I had to update couldn't do it..... I had read there is some way to increase the restore partition to get it to work...but this is screwy.... they should allow us to easily migrate to a larger ssd. I have used Ubuntu, seemed sortt of good, but lately just use win11 but I think sometimes to get back into linux. I am also worried in the future with Windows 12 they might have some subscription fee....so I am concerned.... another thing with linux its greatest strength of diverse distros is a weakness too in that it is confusing which distro to go with. I have recent hardware 7800x3d cpu and 7800xt gpu..use it for gaming and general web browsing/streaming.

Regarding malware, that is cause Windows is much more popular than Linux. If Linux was more popular than Windows, than Linux would too have more malware out there, yes since most of the times linux gets packages from the repo, making it less of a chance to get a malware, it is still possible through document files, standalone executables etc.

One thing Windows does better is that there at least exist an API for creating GUI:s. It is old and clunky, but you do not have to choose between Qt and GTK, where you ideally should support both to get seamless integration on both KDE and Gnome.

    • @NameUserOf
      @NameUserOf 4 місяці тому +1

Windows have like 4, so having to choose between 2 is better in my belief, especially since they can at least achieve similar colors for another one by changing 1 setting(for the user under Plasma). In W11 you can't even have the same theme across all of them, dark theme works for handful of programs the rest look wherever they like. To these day there're programs that for some reason still utilize old UI toolkit in some places while newer in others. So seamless integration is a lot better on Linux.

This guy is misinformed at best. Windows more than makes up for being "slow" (one of my PC's has Intel - Gen 3, i7 - it runs perfectly) with compatibility, both as far as old AND new software is concerned.
Running Windows off a USB stick is of no consequence to me + I doubt it is for most people.
As for customization - Rainmeter will do the job just fine for almost ANY kind of widget you'd like to get your hands (or eyes) on. Other customization options are baked into the OS. Windows 11 is a modern looking, top-notch OS.
Creating shortcuts (inc. commands) is as easy as plugging in a USB-C cable. Specifically, keyboard shortcuts. No need for external software, none whatsoever.
I know Microsoft Store is lacking, but ever since they opened it up for all kinds of apps (Web Apps, UWP's, legacy apps, etc.), you can pretty much find anything you want there (only thing keeping me away - I won't sign into Windows, won't have them harvesting every piece of information out of me, but then again - Android does it even better and it was the one setting the stage for a world devoid of privacy).
For the AVERAGE user, Linux is MUCH more complicated, as it is highly script-based, as opposed to mostly a graphical interface (Windows).
As far as privacy is concerned, 99.9% of telemetry can be done away with quite easily (advanced users :( ).
The only thing that's totally CORRECT here is - SECURITY. As a hacker, I can tell you - not only is Windows the most targeted OS, but also - for the purpose of supporting legacy software, Command Prompt, the Registry and other scripting assistants, like Powershell make it the most vulnerable OS, easily exploited! (out of the box - at default settings)
Not only that, many major security organizations have been able to have "TrustedInstaller" and "System" at the palm of their hands, practically demolishing any escalation mitigation, making it moot, a veritable joke.
The User Account Control can be easily set to ask for administrator permission at almost any part of the OS, but SO many exploits which have been baked into the OS render it obsolete for lack of a better word. For 90% of the user-base - this is plain and simple NOT relevant. Unfortunately, even a small percentage of users equals millions of users.
So, to wrap it up - security issues have always been Windows' Achilles' heel.
Not switching to ANY other OS any time soon, although I've been increasingly using the Desktop version of Android and it's been quite an experience! :)
    Always good to have options!

  • @MinaSchloch

As much as I like Linux, there was quite some misinformation in it.
Linux is not better for battery life on modern hardware, and it is also often not a lot faster. A bit, but not much. On old hardware it will be way better though.
Software is a lot easier to install, but 90% of the time not officially packaged, meaning you may have years old bugs (Debian) or simply bad packaging and issues that are not the fault of upstream. This is fixed with verified Flatpak apps, but those have other difficulties.
To Security: with Flatpaks apps are more isolated than on Windows, sometimes. But Windows also has a lot of app security features that Windows Store apps follow.
Windows is very likely not less secure, Linux is a total security mess. That its not targeted by most viruses is luck, not a strength. Any file on the OS can be executed, the .bashrc can be manipulated to catch the sudo password (and that password prompt is likely way less secure than Windows' "okay" button, as that is spawned in a privileged area.
Windows Updates are overcomplicated and way worse than on immutable systems, and probably also worse than traditional upgrades (maybe with snapshots). But they are pretty reliable, taking that nearly everyone on this planet runs that damn OS.
So yes, Linux is nice but those are simply not true.

This video is made in 2024, Linux either have battery life in par or better than Windows. It wasn't the case in say 2017 though were you had to tweak a lot yourself. And this Linux with more eye candy than Windows.
Actually more than 95% is packaged. Proprietary software obviously will be absent in the main repository but they're minority in the Linux world. I have yet to see bad packaging example in the official repos because of which you'll have to use Flatpak/Snap. Those are reserved for extra security if you need one, more security = less simple interaction, so ofcourse they have difficulties.
Security in Linux isn't there because of Flatpaks, those are recent development. Linux was more secure than Windows prior to those partially because of how software is installed(multiple programs use the same library, it has vulnerability, received the fix, all other software don't need to be updated as oppose to Windows).
Any file under any OS can be executed but on Linux it's highly unlikely to happen without user permission. Also Linux users mark most folder in home as non executable, so even browser have downloaded something without your permission it won't be able to do anything even to your own files. There is a reason that when Linux is tested on hacking events they shutdown a lot of security mechanisms. There is a reason that Linux is used on the servers and routers that have constant internet connection and much more valuable than home PCs yet they're not so easily breached.
What makes you think that entering a password is less secure than brainless smashing of Yes button? Most people on Windows don't even read the prompts. Also Microsoft is currently working on the sudo command.
So yeah, Linux is better and it is truth you'll have to live with.

point 1 OS minimum requirements - agree
point 2 Battery - no, battery lasts longer on windows, as a matter of fact the worst thing I've noticed on linux is battery consumption.
point 3 Portablility - doesn't matter if the OS itself is not the better choice.

      2. I'd say it depends, more often than not i saw bigger battery life on Linux. Also Windows 10 on the same hardware couldn't even regulate brightness when running on battery, settings didn't matter.
      3. It does matter if you just upgraded your PC/notebook/Server and simply want to run it on the new hardware. On Linux you just plug in the device and work, on Windows it's better to reinstall. In was nightmare before W10 but even after it's not much better and system can either not boot, become unstable or at the very least be sluggish.
      4. Depends highly on how much you want to dive in. But on Windows even simple things are unchangeable and it's gotten worse in W11. Periodically Windows users receive some 3rd party software to tweak things -> Windows users are happy -> Windows updates -> Software no longer works/becomes buggy -> Windows users stop using it. You can customize Windows UI to some degree with 3rd party tools but it's nothing more than a toy because it's not supported officially and breaks all the time.
I remember how Windows users said they can do the same Linux can which is treating RAM as a storage. Result? Many different programs released but where unstable and thus useless. Years later some companies still advertise it but only for limited usage and they're still unreliable.
      5. How exactly Linux package management is a nightmare? Any example? So far it's been a blaze to use. Windows just recently trying to obtain the same power - repositories, install software in the same command, sudo. In Windows software is installed wherever, dependency hell is a real problem. You don't see it much these days not because Windows got any better but because developers try to pack more in the same directories they install the program which leads to another problem - security.
Windows can't even install software sorted by categories, you just see a bunch of software in the Start menu as oppose to organized category list on Linux.
      So yes, Linux is better.
