they are everything the hall is suppose to be about, absolutely spectacular band that are also absolutely unique and individual and the creativity is suppose to take precedence over the mainstream success and popularity. but we are well past the point where very mediocre but successful bands keep going in while the really interesting bands with big loyal followings get ignored. i fond Cindi and Kate two of the most under rated vocalists of all time.

They named themselves after a big beehive bouffant hairdo that was popular in the 60s called a, "B52," which was inspired by the 1950s bomber. They are a nu wave/punk band. (And, they are on tour right now... In Kansas City or St. Louis).

"Like he was joking, but he was not joking." Oh, he was definitely joking! The big hair and retro '60s look was a big part of the B-52's image; they did it to be weird! They were a little bit punky, a little bit kitschy, and part of the Athens, Georgia sound that came out in the late '70s - early '80s. You would always hear some of their music at every college frat party, back in the day.

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 2 роки тому +1

Well, considering they were part of the "College Radio" scene back in the day, that's no surprise at all. That label applied to some fun, quirky bands in the early to mid 80s which included them, R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, The The, and Violent Femmes (that I can remember, there's probably others that I can't); their music was very popular on various college radio stations throughout the U.S (which was kind of odd in a way, since none of these bands were anywhere close to the mainstream at the time, although B52s and R.E.M. did have commercial success in the late 80s and early 90s).

The vocal harmonies of Kate Pearson and Cindy Wilson are one of the defining sounds of the B-52s. Kate had the big hair and was playing keyboards. Cindy had the white dress on and joined the vocals mostly for harmonies. You've heard this and Rock Lobster, Time for Planet Claire.

The B52's, out of Athens Georgia, were part of "the new wave" music scene, along with Blondie, Talking Heads, GoGos, and so many others that were a tad more musical and less serious than the contemporaneous punk movement...

Yeah this whole John Ritter kind of goes down the new wave Alley the whole thing was to do the music that came before The Beatles cake house ideas of those sounds bring him back and put a Different Twist on it Diva was kind of the same thing although they're more like some sci-fi experiment that happened in the early sixties Elvis Costello was also in this wheelhouse when you think about it it's really an awesome thing because they took that old genre of music and expanded on it so it wasn't just lost to the dustbins of time these bands brought it back it was the totally brilliant idea and that worked and they created something really new and different with that retro Style

The B-52s are an art band hiding under a facade of campy dance party music, 60s clothes, and silly lyrics. Yes, the other woman (the guitarist's sister) can sing. Check out "Give Me Back My Man" for a great example. Also, being from Athens myself, I can tell you that the song "Deadbeat Club" totally captures the vibe in Athens back in the 80s.

Love to see someone mention Give Me Back My Man! One of my personal favourite B-52s songs- largely because it showcases the ladies' voices so beautifully. I grew up (in the 90s-00s) listening to my parents' best of album, but only discovered this one recently as it wasn't on it.

Yeah, the B52s were always playful. Maybe also whimsical . . . and a bit waggish, puckish, or tongue-in-cheek. Also talented and successful.

So happy to see you guys listening to this quirky and fun band. I like this better than Love Shack. Can you react to Quiche Lorraine by the B-52s in honor of my roomate who was in a band that covered this band? He died from brain cancer in his early 20's and he loved songs like this and Quiche Lorraine.

There is no band like them! Quirky riffs, upbeat tunes for days. Ricky Wilson's guitar tuning: remove the middle two strings (D & G).

So, behind Cindy in the white dress is Ricky, her brother. He passed away from aids back in the day.
So if you also look at the drummer in this video, he later took over guitar duties to this day.

The first two albums killed and have been influencing music ever since. All the punk and metal bands admired the B-52s. Check their late 70s SNL appearance. See Redd Kross & Voice of the Bee Hive.

Beehive hair, 1950's style, two singers with that style = B 52's. That is where their name came from.

still a favorite of mine, never gets old. all very talented but my girl kate pierson gets big nod from me. she plays bass on keys; keyboard leads on the organ and sings a lot, sometimes all at the same time. talented. and yeah, she uses the legendary farfisa compact organ on these albums, nice.

I have been to well over 100 live concerts over the years! After the B-52's I was never so exhausted from a show in all my life! You cannot stop dancing, bouncing, jumping up and down, on and on. From the very start until the very end! Even my dates each time I saw them were excited and all revved up! Unbelievable, unless you have been there!

This seemed kinda jokey because the band at this point (1979-80) was kind of parodying sounds and dress styles of the first half of the 1960s (kind of a trend at the time), hence the big hair and the sixties-looking stage set. I saw them live in the early eighties in a big arena and the whole place, thousands of people, danced like crazy the whole time, doing sixties dances like the Twist, the Monkey, the Swim, the Jerk, the Pony, the Frug, etc. It was great. This and another song from the same album, "Give Me Back My Man," were huge hits for them in 1980.

New Wave was music by Baby Boomers who grew up listening to the radio and buying vinyl and going to concerts.
They had appreciation for what had come before and weren't trying to make music that was entirely new of distinctly different.
They put their own personalities into their art and saw every aspect of musical entertainment as something that could bring out their creativity and individual spark.
They weren't afraid of being drafted and forced to fight an unconstitutional war and if a nuclear war happened wouldn't you be glad you had enjoyed your life?
