So glad I found you. My father was raised in Tulsa, went to OU, and we lived in Norman for two years (he was an Air Force pilot stationed at Tinker at the time). Just knit my first sock! Bought your book and can't wait to knit a thousand more :).
Summer, I'm loving that you are making your podcast again! Lots of people roll eyes about preppers. 2 summers ago we had a week with no electricity. We have generators, a garden, our home canned food and are schooled in the old ways. Less neighbors roll eyes now.
We have experienced the same!! No electricity in the heat and cold and it's the worst! We have a generator now, but still working on garden and other things!
What a great episode! That video tutorial for colorwork is great. If there are any other left hand knitters out there, just make sure that your yarn management is switched...hold your main color on your left and contrast color on your right.
You crack me up. I love your podcasts and all the socks. When you talked about the prepper site I laughed because I watched a video where hunters talked about fabric properties and wool, nyon, fleece etc. It was really interesting. I love prepper videos so I can understand the rabbit hole.
I’ve just discovered your podcast. It is WONDERFUL! (Watching No. 4 with heel discussion, but the whole of it is great. I love your style, information, and energy. Your patterns and color ways are great. I’ve registered for your upcoming FibreSide Chat and will be buying your new book. Thank you! To anyone not already following you on Instagram-do it!
If you are excited about alpaca, you should try perennial by Kelbourne woolens. It is an alpaca blend that is perfect for socks. I made a Sophie shawl out of it and it is so drapey and soft and glorious and the colors are delicious. Love your patterns!
I enjoy watching your podcast for a number of reasons. It isn't too long and can generally watch in one setting. Second is because socks are my favorite thing to knit. I also love all the colors in your patterns, although I have yet to do color work. And your videos appear very professional to me. Please keep them coming. Would love to hear a comparison of different short row heels and why choose one over another.
I recently found your channel and immediately bought your book. I absolutely love the book and look forward to learning all about sock knitting! You are so much fun to watch.
Thanks for the colourwork tutorial, you use a much simpler version than I was shown and think it will help my tension loads. I’m also an English knitter (from England!) so it’s really good to see a demo I am able to follow.
We have the same hobbit dreams! The floral modification you made is adorable! After talking of hobbits and sock knitting, you gave me convinced we need more hobbit inspired sock patterns 😉
Hi Summer! I found you on Knit Stars (LOVE your class!) and really enjoy following your UA-cam channel. Thank you for all the fun, colorful ideas! Love your patterns and can’t wait to start knitting more socks!
I was so happy and excited to see this week's podcast was posted! I love your patterns Summer, and I so enjoy hearing you talk knitting and fibres and books and all the things.
Glad you found the prepper site I watch you snd them! Who knows we may need to have prepped ! It’s helped already during Covid and power outages!! Again moderation!
So happy I found your podcast ! You bring me food for my new sock knitting addiction. Hello from Paris (France) : only 10 more days to wait before getting your book here!
I have a bug out bag for my dog. It has several days worth of food, food and water bowls, an extra leash and harness and copies of her vet paperwork. We frequently get wild land fires and I want to be prepared for an emergency.
I am so happy you’re at it again! Just love spending time with you. Enjoying your knit knowledge!! But my favorite is your laugh and smile and that you’re a fellow Okie! 🧶⭐️❤️💛🩷
Hi Summer, little box and Lykke socks are my pref socks. Little box socks are so squishy for my feet... the double thickness created by the colorwork makes them feel like you are walking on an air cushion...love them. I wear my Lykke socks when I want to impress 😂 Thank you for being back on the UA-camsphere!
I’m really enjoying your podcast and hope you continue. My question that I would love you to address on an episode is: How do you handle your ends when you change colors. Especially when doing 5 -6 row strips and need to go back to the prior color. Do you carry the yarn inside, does that get caught on toes? Do you use magic knots, Russian join, weanin Steven, etc.
Hi Summer. Your podcast and content has renewed my love of sock knitting. Love your esthetic for the podcast. I knit all my socks on 9 inch circulars and will try your tip for color work ! 🎉
I’m just loving your podcasts! Adorable color work on the socks. Thanks for all the information about the yarn content in your sweater. I’m using more and more blends, and there are some good ones! I knit mostly socks and toys, softies, whimsical little things, - I need color and durability. Great tips on colorwork, I’m going to be replaying that part -probably a lot 😂
Love your podcast knitting socks is my obsession loved your weekend shorty dock pattern thats where I learned scrappy socks love your patterns keep the new patterns coming
Are any of the socks that you showed today included in your new book? I will be receiving your book Feb 14 so I don’t want to buy a pattern that will be included in book. I’m so glad to have found your podcast!
I’m really enjoying your podcast and am looking forward to your book. Quick question about the Chiaogoo twist shorties, do you use a different size for these from what you normally use? Thank you!!!
thanks Summer, loved today's podcast. I also love to "accidentally" land on prepper sites :) they are so convincing. Like yes I should be freeze drying my and stocking up. LOL loved it. Looking forward to next week.
I love that within 10 minutes we have covered both bug out bags and dreams of living in a hobbit hole! 😂 I have a sock question because I want to try a toe up sock, just to see what that’s like. How do I know where to stop the foot and start my short row heel? Do I just knit my toe and usual number of rounds and then go for it? Thanks! I’m just so loving your new low maintenance set up podcast!❤❤❤
I love your Lykke socks! I’ve knit them two years in a row now for Christmas. I do one row of Colorwork a day and then Christmas morning I have a cute pair of fun socks! So excited for the book 🎉
So glad to see u are podcasting regular,,,,, Been going back to watch ur tutorials,,,love them ,,, Just started this Jan to try colorwork,,,,!!! So love knitting socks ,,,I have ordered ur sock book,,!!!my first one,,,, Excited,,, and will buy ir seasons pattern and try that colorwork,,,LOVE! Elaine 💖❤
Loving your podcast! Thanks for making them. I missed the book review this week. (Just finished up the one you recommended last week and was looking forward to learning what I should read next.)
For me the benefit of an anfterthought heel is you can use up all your yarn and not have scraps left. And the afterthought heel is for the second sock.
My favorite store bought sweaters are from Sezane and Alex Mill. Sezane are blend of natural fiber and polyamide/acetate but I have the Leontine Jumper in 2 colorways, it’s mostly cotton (just the stripe yarn is blend of cotton and acetate) and I wear it all year round! Alex Mill definitely has some higher quality sweaters IMHO. They also have blends but they are high quality blends of yak, alpaca, cashmere, merino, etc. My favorite piece from them is the “button-back crewneck sweater in stripe” (its also a cardigan) is such an amazing closet staple-it’s 100% cotton so again, all year wear. As a knitter, I could make either of these, they are not so complicated…but also as a knitter, I know the cost/work ratio and I just loved these right off the shelf so I got them and I do not regret them.
I love seeing all your socks. My only problem with your video is that I don’t want it to end! It’s like chatting with my bestie. And my socks keep getting better and better. My very first socks were extra roomy. I love doing different patterns and colors. Thank you Summer.
Have that needle set and i going to try that. With using one short and one long needle. For some reason i grip the needle to hard that i ruin the interchangeable cable.
Very informative and very enjoyable podcast. I have never done color work before so I am looking forward to seeing your tutorials on that subject whenever you publish them.
Thank you for showing how you do color work. I recently made socks with a color work band at top. My floats were not loose enough and I can barely get then over my heel! I was more careful with the second sock and it fits better. I love your enthusiasm and enjoy the podcast. You always make me laugh. Thank you!
Thank you so much! And I have been there! My first couple of pairs of colorwork socks wouldn't fit over my heels because my tension was too tight. I was about ready to give up! 😂
You have THE BEST personality ❤ You make me laugh so much. Really look forward to your weekly podcast. What a mix, doomsday preppers; hobbit dreams; vintage McDonalds; butt talking love the way your brain works. Can’t believe you make a video of this quality with one light & an iPhone 😮 Would love a detailed colour work tutorial 👍♥️
I'm in the process of knitting my own sweaters and not wearing/buying storebought sweaters, because of multiple reasons. But I still save some of my storebought sweaters. My favorite storebought sweater is one from Uniqlo. They have a lot of knitwear, some contain more non-natural fibers than others, so you have to compare them if there is something that you like.😊
I enjoy your podcasts so much! Makes me happy!! And I love knitting socks!! Thanks for all the color work too. I’m doing my first color work sock!! How do you deal with the float that you missed?? Keep doing what you do!!! ❤
I’m loving your videos! Thank you so much for the color work video…. So very helpful. I love the texture on the Season socks. Thanks for your efforts in putting out such great videos.
Hi, Summer. I am relatively new to knitting socks and mittens. Pages 44-49 of Mary Scott Huff's book "The Mitten Handbook" describes eight treatments for the top of mittens: anatomical, pointed, spiral, yarnover, gathered, symmetrical, top-down increased, and spoke. The anatomical, symmetrical, and top-down increased mitten tops appear to be well-known methods for sock toes. Here's my question: could you use the other mitten top methods for sock toes? I wish I could include photos of the various methods but from their names alone, can you offer your advice? Many thanks!
Smiling at your sweater story! When I first got truly into knitting--it was natural fibers all the way. I love and use lots of natural fibers, but I have changed. Now my yarn is chosen for the purpose and recipient. Also I love the Aran Sweater Market in Ireland. I have purchased three of their boyfriend cardigans over the last 10 years. I shop their sales. The sweaters are warm, and they last. I am still wearing the original sweater. It now sports two elbow patches knitted out of a sock yarn that has the green in it. I also have a gray one, and this year I purchased an oatmeal colored cardigan. I wear them at work, and love them!
I really look forward to your podcast (and your laugh!) Do you increase your needle size when you change from "plain" knitting to the colorwork section of your socks? Or do you add stitches to accommodate the tighter gauge?
Good info about heels! What about the shadow wrap heel? What are it's benefits or negatives compared to the afterthought and the heel flap/gusset? I will try my shorties again but put the shorter needles and the left, maybe that will work. Thanks for the tip!
I'm loving your podcast. So uplifting and fun! We get lots of the foggy weather you are describing in the PNW. I also call it The Mist or describe it as Silent Hill weather. It's a real bummer to go days and days without seeing the sun. Knitting helps for sure!
Loving the podcast. You are a natural and it’s very engaging. I’d stick with the iPhone camera. The picture quality is excellent. I’m just outside Tulsa in Claremore. It’s about 11 am on Sunday and the sun just came out. The weather has been so dreary. So happy to see the sun. I just might get out to Owasso today to get some shopping done. So excited for your book, which I pre-ordered. Loved the prepper references. If you know, you know. I’m about to do my first after thought heel. Wish me luck. Looking forward to future episodes.
Buying a piece of clothing and receiving something with a different fiber content happened to me too. It's frustrating! It doesn't mean you can't love wearing the item but you didn't get the truth in the product description and that's important! Your new sock is really cute!
so glad i found your podcast again. i remember watching your very first podcasts and loving your content. your joy for what you do is contagious. hey, where are some of your dad stories...?!?!
Oh my gosh! I ordered those twist shorties just yesterday! I'm expecting them tomorrow. I had a set of Addi EasyKnit Rockets but I needed options for needle size and couldn't find them. The twist shorties seem perfect because it's like making your own EasyKnit Rockets in several sizes. Can't wait to try them. I'm new to knitting on small circulars so wish me luck! I usually use magic loop but wanted to try something new. Love your podcast! Thanks!!
Preppers are awesome. I've watched prepper videos and got my bugout bag and vehicle ready 😂 fog is awesome too. It hides me from this crazy world for awhile and I feel safe, surrounded by a big soft cloud like a big cosy blanket 😊 I've never heard of "fore thought" heel...I've always used waste yarn and called it an "after thought " heel. But I do knit the heel in before the toe end so I can try it on and make sure it's the right length 😂 that's interesting about blocking to even out the stitches. People keep saying I have lovely even stitches...I never really understood why it was something they'd notice...I also never block anything...I'm just used to having even stitches. Enjoyed your podcast ❤
I’ve found some “investment” sweaters at Goodwill or a flea market for much less of course. It was fun and I’ve even sent one to be indie-dyed because why not? I also want/need to do sweater surgery on 2 to fix the color and the length.
I’ve been wanting to try color work and I wanted something simplistic and just on a portion of the cuff. This is so perfect for me to begin learning with. I jus updated my pattern. Thank you!
Haha I have been knitting (and frogging) a lot of socks recently and cast on a sweater today just so have something I can finish quickly for the sense of accomplishment. It’s reassuring to think the sock thing will get faster with practice. In the past month I frogged almost 10 socks 😅 Nylon/polyester will degrade with exposure to water and air which natural wool does not. So a good wool sweater can last a few decades, but with nylon less so (like what happens with old activewear, leggings etc - even if you haven’t worn them they’ll be brittle because polymers degrade). But! The nylon will make the sweater more durable short term (~5, maybe 10 years? if it’s good quality). I’d say a type of wool that doesn’t pill is the most likely to last a really long time, if you care for it, though they are vulnerable to mold/decay/moths.
Great episode! Ronald the clown traumatized me as a child but nothing beat a 80’s McDonald’s birthday party🎉 grimace was my favorite. I’m with ya on researching preppers. I find it fascinating. I’m just not organized enough to be a prepper. I’m looking forward to your book and the explanation of different heel types. I’ve only ever done heel and gusset
Hi Summer, so pleased to have found you. I am a UK english knitter and love my mini Chiaogoos, haven't yet found the twist needles. I pick and drop colours the same way as you. Interested to tty the forethought/afterthought heels. Was interested to hear the US way of pronouncing the word buoy. In the UK we say 'boy' for the word 'buoy'. (as in lifebuoy). Will be looking out for your book.❤
I’m also curious if you go up a needle size for color work. I knit in a band around the top and then just above the heel flap on a pair of Christmas socks. They are a bit hard to pull on over my heel but then fit great once on. The floats are not tight so thinking a slightly bigger needle would help. Also which sock blockers do you recommend?
You are welcome! And it depends! If the entire sock is colorwork, then I'll use the shorties for the body of the sock, and do magic loop on the cuffs, heels, and toes. If I'm just doing a band of colorwork somewhere, then I'll knit the colowork on the shorties, then switch back to magic loop for the rest of the sock.
Your finished socks look so great! Almost looks like you iron them, but I’m sure you don’t. I looked on your Amazon page and saw Knitter’s Pride sock blockers. Are these what you use to make them look so good after knitting them? Also, I saw again in your Amazon store you use a US 2 for the Chagoo Twist needles. You use No. 2 instead of No. 1? Thanks for your podcast. I love knitting socks (I’m not a garment knitter either-Ha! )
Love all those colourful socks ! I was wondering how you manage to use tiny circs though, as you appear to have quite slender legs and feet. For my feet have 20 cm circumference, which is the same length as the small circs. So I never tried them, as I figure it will be impossible to get negative ease then..
I love the little color work on the top of the socks, but I am one of the people never did colorwork. Oh boy your socks are all so beautiful.
So glad I found you. My father was raised in Tulsa, went to OU, and we lived in Norman for two years (he was an Air Force pilot stationed at Tinker at the time). Just knit my first sock! Bought your book and can't wait to knit a thousand more :).
The happiest hobbit socks! Perfect for the springtime...
I am 100% invested now! Though of course I'm now scaring myself 😂
I’m enjoying all of your videos! And they look professional. I would never know you are filming with your phone
Thank you so much! It's truly amazing what iPhones can do nowadays!
I want to live in that burrow!
Thank you so much for this feedback! It helps so much! And the short row comparison is a fantastic idea!
This is my favorite new UA-cam channel. Thanks 😊

We have the same hobbit dreams! The floral modification you made is adorable! After talking of hobbits and sock knitting, you gave me convinced we need more hobbit inspired sock patterns 😉
Yes we do!!!
Im so glad i found your youtube channel. You are so happy and bright, just like your socks! I cant wait to get my hands on your book 😍
I love your book. Thank you
Another benefit to after thought heels is you can add a mini gusset if you need more room across the top of the sock
Hi Summer! I found you on Knit Stars (LOVE your class!) and really enjoy following your UA-cam channel. Thank you for all the fun, colorful ideas! Love your patterns and can’t wait to start knitting more socks!
I was anxiously awaiting this week's podcast. I really enjoy your upbeat spirit. It comes across loud and clear that you love what you do. Thank you.
Thank you so much!! That kind of encouragement is so helpful!!
Please continue to do your weekly podcast, I am enjoying them. I have learned something new from each one.
So much fun information. Gratitude.

Summer another wonderful video. You are like a ray of sunshine.
Thank you so much!!! This makes my day!🥹
hi enjoyed watching you i am a new knitter
I pulled out my 9 inch twists and tried the technique and it looks amazing. Thanks for the demo and the floral chart looks so cute!
the sock is sooo cute! I can't wait for your book to come. I want to do more color work socks.
We're very grateful too! Thank you for the time! - Kimberly
Really like your podcast! Thanks for sharing the sock yarns you like and I really enjoyed your tutorial on color work socks. Well done!
Loving your podcast! Thanks for making them. I missed the book review this week. (Just finished up the one you recommended last week and was looking forward to learning what I should read next.)

Your new sock is really cute!
I love Jenny Kayne sweaters. Pricey, but it is timeless.
I've seen them advertised and have always wondered about them!
I love that golden yellow of your yellow & red sock. It reminds me of the yellow OG tupperware lol
It totally looks like Tupperware!! That would be a fantastic collection from an indie dyer! 😍
so glad i found your podcast again. i remember watching your very first podcasts and loving your content. your joy for what you do is contagious. hey, where are some of your dad stories...?!?!
I've told all the dad stories I can safely tell in public 😂
I love the doomsday prepper rabbit hole! 😂 so fascinating!
Thanks!!
Yay! I hope you love them! They were a game changer for me in terms of colorwork!
Hi Summer! I really enjoy your podcast, very entertaining and informative ❤
Thank you so much!
I'm getting your book for my bday gift!!! I'm so excited 🧦🧦🧦
Thank you so much!! And happy birthday!!
Thank you!
Yay! I'm so glad it's helpful!!
Summer, if you do have to “bug out”, you will look stunning in that beautiful alpaca/polyamide sweater!😂
Just found your podcast and you made me laugh so hard talking about McDonald Red! Hope you keep coming back - I subscribed so I will 😊
Haha I have been knitting (and frogging) a lot of socks recently and cast on a sweater today just so have something I can finish quickly for the sense of accomplishment. It’s reassuring to think the sock thing will get faster with practice. In the past month I frogged almost 10 socks 😅
Nylon/polyester will degrade with exposure to water and air which natural wool does not.
Great Podcast!❤
Hello from Swansea, Illinois.
Now I want to make that sock with either The Golden Arches or Colorwork hamburgers 😂
omg HAMBURGERS!!!
Question about colorwork... do you need a bigger needle size vs regular knitting?
I’m also curious if you go up a needle size for color work. I knit in a band around the top and then just above the heel flap on a pair of Christmas socks. They are a bit hard to pull on over my heel but then fit great once on. The floats are not tight so thinking a slightly bigger needle would help. Also which sock blockers do you recommend?
Ohhhh a fellow Hobbit! Yay! And I'm married to a prepper 😂 Your podcast is so inspiring. Thank you.
I really like your videos, thank you for having them available for us. I was wondering if use the shorty twist needles for knitting the entire sock?
You are welcome! And it depends! If the entire sock is colorwork, then I'll use the shorties for the body of the sock, and do magic loop on the cuffs, heels, and toes. If I'm just doing a band of colorwork somewhere, then I'll knit the colowork on the shorties, then switch back to magic loop for the rest of the sock.
Thank you for your response. I am looking forward to more videos.
I enjoy knitting boot socks. Do you have any examples of boot socks that you have made for your husband?
I like watching your channel!
Boot socks are on my list to make this year!!
@@summerleedesignco.6471 Sweet!!
loved it!
