Amel 52 Yacht Attacked by Orcas (Killer Whales) off the Spanish Coast

- There have been numerous reports of Orcas attacking yachts around the Spanish Coast since last summer, and nobody really knows why.
In this video, we experience 2 hours of harassment from a pod of orcas off the coast of Barbate in Southern Spain. This is the fith interaction we've had whilst delivering yachts along this stretch of coast.
The film was taken on July 14th during the yacht delivery of a 52ft Amel from Gibraltar to the UK.
The music is "Empire Seasons" and "Russian River" by Dan Henig.
2 probable reasons for this...
1 ... they are merely doing a scientific study where they tag and release your boat .
2 ... They want you to buy Orca insurance !
Possibly because they own shares in different boat insurance companies .

UTTER NONSENSE! For orcas the boat propeller is what an open car window for a dog. Just turn on the prop to full ahead and give them some pleasure... GEEZ, how hard can it be to deduce.
I'm thankful the ones in Puget Sound weren't similarly inclined when I was cruising in my old Triton many years ago.
Does anyone remember that story from several years ago where a killer whale sunk a sailboat? It was an English guy who had sold his house and bought the boat to take his family sailing around the world. Sitting in their life-raft they would have been easy prey for the Orca, but it just swam away, so it wasn't doing it for food. Maybe Orcas just don't like the Brits.
Between 1662 and 1807 Britain shipped 3.1 million Africans across the Atlantic Ocean in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
I never heard about that. I googl3ed it unsuccessfully. If you remembered the name of the boat, or the family, maybe that would help my search? Thanks.
@@heidikickhouse- No, the only additional details I can remember is that it rammed them multiple times and they could see it was bloodying its own nose with the attacks.

They also were the ones who fought a war to stop a slave trade going back thousands of years - and most of us were also once slaves / serfs going back through history. The original from your country were also from Britain and gave you a constitution, etc - but not always brains!

This particular pod has attacked other boats and are well known for their aggressiveness.
Truth is ...it is NOT just one pod doing this. Proven to be multiple all over the globe.
It's amazing how many people are Orca experts here. A legit expert wrote wrote article about how these 53 incidents in the past year isn't a "I'm gonna kill you" thing but they have said it isn't inquisitive behaviour, it's still aggressive. They are specifically ripping the rudders up on all of them.
and they will continue as long people do nothing and just helplessly float on surface......
Get firecracker bombs, chemical repellent, and if nothing is working I would harpoon them ( not to kill ) just injure them enough that they move away.....
Otherwise they will continue what they are doing now.....

Thank goodness you stepped up. I am not bothered by the great ignorance of the commenters [excepting those who merely posed questions], because even the last International study panel about this - where many many causation ideas were floated, considered and debated without these field experts and scholars reaching any definitive conclusions. And that was a large group of scientists, marine biologists, ichthyologists (yes, I know, they are mammals) and animal behaviouristist, zoologists, etc - so why would UA-cam commenters be any better informed than the experts? What does astound me is that only a few of the commenters have read about, or done any previous investigating of, this phenomenon BEFORE announcing with DEFINITE CERTAINTY. that they know what is in the Orca's mind. There is a hysterical thread above, where many many people announced their own individual interpretation ot the Orca's behavior as an absolutely fact. Funniest thread on youtube.
As to Jay C - I am personally a big fan of the snarky retort and have spewed quite a few myself. But you wasted a really well-crafted joke on the wrong target so it didn't work, the guy did know what he was talking about. But keep that joke at the front of your quiver, it was so good I'd like to see it again someday.

The rudder in that photograph was shredded. I have heard of this happening to other yachts as well. Are there any statements from oceanographic institutions as to why this occurs?
First they called them the Gladys, there is a detailed BBC article about this. A group of 3 young orcas. Apparently always the same individuals, although they have a new, younger one with them this year. Maybe they get used to prey on thunas caught with by fishing boats, at least one of them has deep scars on his head, maybe a propeller cut him while he was playing/attacking a rudder. Edit : there are other reports near Gibraltar of much larger groups with the same behaviour... the 1st idea was that they are rogue individuals, like a group a teenagers testing or attacking people... maybe expelled or left their group for that reason (Gladys hypothesis).
Other possibility : most orcas also kill whales, they start by biting their fins so that they can not move, then they eat them. This is quite similar to the orcas biting rudders and keels, but sailboats don't bleed nor taste good, so it doesn't trigger more violent attacks...
@@smartcatcollarproject5699 I wonder do Orcas need to be triggered to more violence, if food was the goal I find it hard to believe they would not figure out how to get the occupant's of a sailboat into the water if they wanted them there. Pretty much the same attacks with the same results in each case with no food for the orcas tells me, its not about dinner. Perhaps its training, or revenge on the type of boat that hurt it in the past, or maybe just for fun. Fascinating to watch, you probably don't want to be in one of those boats though :) certainly pay for the repairs.

@@alexandermathar7780 - These Orcas are deliberately attacking boats, over 60 reported, for reasons that have scientists baffled. This is absolutely deliberate and they have been involved in sustained attacks that last over an hour. Google it. Spain even banned smaller boats off Galicia as they fear it was only a matter of time before they sink one.
I've heard the whales are getting hungry because of the over fishing of tuna. They connect the boats to the reason why the fish stocks are going down. For anyone who cares about the fish stocks visit 'Sea spiracy' or 'the Cove' and begin to take against those responsible for the over fishing of the oceans.
@D R overfishing is caused by a system that allows trawlers to catch fish, scrapeing the ocean with huge nets, throwing "now dead" fish back into the sea if they're too small and if they've over fished they're allowed quota. It's the barbaric actions of the fishing industry and ridiculous regulations decided by those in suits who are driven by profit, this is what is causing the biggest problem, not the population. Think about how much is thrown away by supermarkets. But constantly we're told it's overpopulation with no questioning of how our food production is managed, and by what means. It's time to listen to the indigenous people of the earth - the shamans, the Hopi people, the aborigines - those who understand nature. 🌲🌳🌲🌳
We have different ideas about what constitutes an attack. I have been surrounded by them here in BC and I know how intimidating they are but they look like kids with a toy to me. They could hole a yacht in one go if they wanted.
I am inn Sooke B.C. and have had them go under my boat without touching the downrigger wires or the 4 fishing lines.Makes my knees knock though!!! The downrigger wires hum and maybe they want to investigate that.

I've seen up close the Southern Resident pods in the San Juan Islands in Washington State USA. They could dismantle a sailboat in nothing flat.

It's a warning: "We'll injure your boat now go home and tell the other humans what we can do if don't stay off our turf. We've been polite so far but we have our limits and y'all are being greedy even for predators and we know how to destroy you but we'll let you get home and warn the others what happens."

For those viewers unaware, this not just a ‘curious and playful’ pod of orcas. This particular pod has attacked many boats off the coast of Portugal and Spain. They have no fear of man and have bitten hefty chunks out of rudders and left teeth marks along hulls. Orcas can be aggressive for food, but can also be aggressive because they are bored and think it’s fun - this is an orca version of a ‘street gang’…🤷♂️

I read from article that fisherman and orca are fighting for bluefin tuna which is main prey of orca. Fisherman used some violence in the course of competing for fish...( It is said that the orca attacked have specific scars regarded by human.
There have been over 200 incidents of Orcas attacking boats off Portugal and the Spanish coast and very recently a boat with five people aboard was sunk.

I've read they may do this because of food competition with us hoomans, respectively fisherman. This pack is also pretty stressed from the ship traffic around Gibraltar. There's a research group, Iberian Orca, who have made a codex for boat owner in the region so they can ship confident their boats there while not stressing the Orca population.

They did that to a seal beached on a piece of ice floating. But the orcas orchistrated a swim that sent waves knocking the seal off.
basically it like when your neighbour won't turn the music down and fight starts is the same with boats disturbing the orcas in there ocean

We have, that’s why their behavior is so curious. They have been attacking boats off the Spanish coast the same way they would try to exhaust and immobilize a large whale.

This has been happening to boats off the Spanish coast quite a bit recently, hasn't it? Are there any theories? I'm certain boats have been traversing that coastline for a very long time without the extra orca attention. So, what has changed?

@@JohnnygSawyer I was kind of wondering if one time a pod played with a boat, decided it was all great fun, told their other podmates about it, and now they all seek out boats to "play" with. It's just a thought. 🤷♀️

Geez oh that’s a crazy picture and had to be just freaking horrifying to be on the boat when they’re messing with it. Just curious how you know they’re mad and not just curious or just messing with the boat not realizing the damage they’re doing? We just had an arrival into Newry via repair at Kilkeel and Carlingford having lost half the rudder to this pod. Amel Supermaramu 2000.

it was just curious. that orca has about 3 tons and is used to ram whales to drown them...it can do way more if it was actually agressive.

This has been a recent phenomena off the cost of Spain and Portugal. In light of recent multi reports, in the same general area, it is believed to be the same pad of Killer Wales!
When they released the orca from the marine park it told the other whales what happened in those marine park jails and now we are at war

I wonder if this has anything to do with the ultrasonic anti fouling being used on boats recently. Probably drives them mental.
I think the advice of turning everything off and waiting adrift until they leave is incorrect. I've read some thoughts from an Orca 'Expert' and he stated that they are known to enjoy the feeling of the propellers turning as it creates bubbles that they like to swim through. Turn the engine on and get moving as quick as possible, or wait for them to possibly sink your yacht!

Something is certainly going on in that area. So many boats have been attacked & their rudders damaged. I wouldn't be surprised to find some sonic underwater military testing out there causing them to behave this way.
It’s not repeated anywhere else in the world. Maybe some muppets attacked them the way some fools in here are advocating.

We had no sign or advanced warning last encounter until they were alongside the boat.We had 2 manuel downriggers down with 4 lines attached to them.One of them dove under the boat and up on the other side all in a matter of a few seconds.We did not have 10min needed to remove the gear if we had seen the need to. The Orca that went under us touched nothing.10 years later we do not see them so often because of lack of fish. ( Did I mention my knees were knocking???) CHEERS from SOOKE

So curious what happened to this pod that they’re now attacking sailboats. They’ve been in the area for over a year now. Passed by the strait in May but missed them. Will deliver a yacht from Exmouth to Lanzarote in September...and I’ll have a reggae playlist to appease them should we run into them. Surely Three Little Birds will mellow them out :D

What on earth do u think this animals are curious for.....because they are constantly trying to learn how to hunt new stuff....if a predator isn't cautious with other predators it's trying to learn how to hunt them..... all wild animals want to do is feed fight and mate playing is what the young do to learn..... a curious predator is generally looking for food or sex and people are only good for 1 of these activities.....how do u think they learned to hunt so many different animals most of which aren't even in the water....with curiosity.....so they are doing the same to a seal on an ice sheet what are they doing.....

Dont forget that Orcas are one of the only 10 self-aware creatures on our beautiful planet, right besides us humans.
Orca is intelligent and can think with its head and not their stomach only.
There is no scenario in which Orca would eat a human. Kill, yes. Eat, no! So you may get killed by Orca if you threaten them or attack them but you certainly wont get yourself killed if you're simply there minding your own business.
OF COURSE its best NOT to approach a wildlife but if you fall into the ocean with Orcas nearby by accident and you cant swim, you'd probably get a 20 tons friend carrying you on their back. Like any dolphin would probably do
What you said makes sense but its just a rough logic that simply doesnt apply here. Orcas are APEX, apex predatos dont have to be cautious, they know they're apex, they know they're the beast of the ocean, they can feast any time they want, on anything they want, they dont go around hungry, ever.
It's just the self-awareness talking in you, you feel threatened as soon as you spot something that can get you easily with no effort. Orcas have that same self-awareness, they are very well aware of what humans are capable of.
You should give other animals more credit.

@@epicscores8421 orca are cations around humans because we are the most dangerous animal on the planet.... the experts who study them know this .... the idea that everything is on the menu except humans is daft they eat other dolphins..... all smart predators are cautious of each other you clearly know very little about animal behaviour its my profession and people do eat cats dogs and birds.....and some people like fishermen still throw dynamite at orca to stop them taking their catch so how could you call this animal smart if it hasn't got the sense to fear humans like we are scared of other predators

@@danmurphy1994 I am an EHS , something has crashed me after a year of worsening unexplaind and unusual symptoms following rollout to the point of now not able to be anywhere near wifi ,mobiles, smart meters , bluetooth etc without immence pain and my fight or flight kicks in. Within around 10 mins I become intolerant , completely out of character. The physical effects are equally disturbing and severe . So yes I have wondered.

Carbon Fiber won't work it's not much different from fiberglass in the end of the day structure wise. Our rudder is industrial grade (acid proof) stainless steel
They’re so incredibly intelligent, could it be that they realized THEY themselves could take control of the boat, play around? Maybe it sounds terrifying and seems like it because of the nature of them being so so big & powerful ??
Maybe they target yachts with 'stand alone' rudders because they remind orcas of fins on other whales?
I have read reports that orcas turn upside-down just before attacking rudders, if you imagine looking at a yacht upside-down (below the waterline) it would certainly give orcas this impression?, maybe it just p-ss-s them off!

It looked as if they were playing with the boat and curious. I wasn't there, but presume the Orcas could have capcized the boat if they had bad intentions. Just a thought. I

WRONG! Look at the migrant flotillas right in the area, coming ashore from Africa. Calling a Sea World orca feeding, and God is the only paying customer.
Interesting...I thought Orcas only habituated in the Pacific in the Northen parts like B.C. and Alaska.

'We used to take a deck brush and scrub them with it. They either liked it or they didn't and left'. That is what somebody said on another video like this. I don't know if that's true or not.. I know banging on pans near the hull will get them to leave.. they dont like that. Orcas bumping you is a real scary thing that most people can't fathom. Although no orcas have ever attacked a human in the wild, allegedly, they are menacing looking.
I'm not sure if they have never attacked humans, they just may be so damn effective, that nobody survived to tell about it😂I hope I'm wrong😏

In this area, I would carry a replacement rudder (or two)...
There seems to be a common scheme to all of theese attacks. That is, they allways bite of chunks of the rudder. In my opinion they are hunting. Why? Because just recentley somebody described how orcas hunted a beluga whale. And what they did is, that at first they would bite of the two of his breast fins (don`t know how you call them, but you get the picture). The two fins right and left at the breast. And after that they would proceed with the real kill. I assume that one could look at the boat from underneath and consider the rudder being a fin. And from the orcas point of view it makes sense to first bite of this "fin"! So after looking through a lot of this footage of orcas attacking boats it seems to be a fair guess that they really are hunting those boats like they would be hunting a whale! What are your thoughts.
Some fishermen probably attacked and injured or killed some of the Orcas and now they consider all sailboats as their enemies. As the scientists came to the conclusion it's a "learned behavior". Why in the long past they were not hostile?

Maybe boats in this area should use a steering oar instead like in ancient history times, then you could just lift it out of the water so it doesn't get damaged

They are not attacking but playing, you can see them often showing their belly, which is a sign of trust, an attack would also be a lot more organized, they never attacked humans in the wild and at first I was worried when I heard they were "attacking" sailboats but seeing this footage I can easily say that it's not meant to be aggressive. Shame of the rudder though xD
Maybe they are just scratching them self against the rudders and teaching the young,why has no one bother to put a camera on the rudder if it happens regular.

About a month ago another Amel had the same issue with two rudders damaged. My guess is that they are training the offsprings how to hunt whales and go for their fins (rudders in this case)

A very intelligent animal...perhaps they're becoming aggressive in response to human actions taken by some people against them
(fisherman who see them as competition ? jerks harassing, shooting them from boats ? etc)
There used to getting free food from the back of boats the bi catch from trawlers and that what there looking and waiting for is food to start spilling out the bi catch shoot

What I see is a paid delivery encountering a risk of the job. I also see what orcas might consider "Killer Humans" not following the latest information about these encounters, based on footage you show of speaking loudly and holding a phone camera over the side. Cetaceans making a recovery in their waters since ancient times don't deserve the labeling in your headline and speaking, in my view. (Three-years in the Mediterranean, full-time liveaboard sailor since 2016.)

Disabling is not attacking? F that, I'd be carrying bear spray next time and squirting their blow holes. Every see the damage they cause they're actually biting off chunks of the rudder. As the skipper said they could be left adrift. Or worse if the stern tube gets damaged badly it could sink the boat.
The orcas were wanting to partake in the charcuterie and cheese board.
Maybe it's their way to tell us to stop polluting the oceans.
They are gonna keep coming at us if we do nothing about it.
