Saahil Arora I thought exactly the same thing. and i kind of like the collection, but i totally understand that it's too weareble for a high fashion house like Burberry and for Ricardo

Yup, I don't particularly like this collection, but I have never liked Burberry, so its just more Burberry I don't like. Burberry just reminds me of how triggered they got when their signature tartan was adopted as a status symbol by poor urban kids so they stopped making stuff in their signature tartan, and sorry Burberry, a sale is a sale, you do it to yourself.

Exactly. Burberry unlike Givenchy, Dior, Celine or any other big brand is not a luxury brand. For the biggest part of it history, it has never been that.
They had that trench-coat, the check and others elements that people loves but the brand was more like a Polo Ralph Lauren than something else.
Bailey gave them a fashion credibility with the Prorsum line and for a longtime, they showed in Italy.
That Prorsum line did well but the majority of the revenues came from the BRIT and LONDON lines.
When they united all the lines, they almost killed the fashion credibility of the brand. They did "See Now Buy Now", the stuff you see in Department Stores next to Tommy Hilfiger doesn't scream high fashion.
All the latest collections didn't felt High Fashion.
So yes, Burberry is challenging. It's even more challenging to ask someone who has a love for Couture to do very pragmatic fashion. Christopher Bailey was a very pragmatic fashion designer. That's why he did Burberry so well.
Burberry now is a brand that sells 100£ t-shirts AND 3000£ runway pieces and all under the same name.
The reality is that this collection will stand out, at least for the first part and i'm sure people will buy this new Burberry because there is nothing better than the feeling of something new, even if it's familiar.

I was shocked at how unorganized the collection was, it almost felt like Ricardo was trying too hard to do too much. A lot of the pieces really look like something you could go buy from Zara today. I have to wonder if this collection was made extremely "wearable" to possibly help get Burberry more sales tbh. So uninspiring and disappointing. If a collection doesn't leave you feeling inspired in some way, what even is the point...

I felt personally assaulted by several pieces which gave me "Ann Taylor Loft meets Zara and Topshop" PTSD flashbacks. The flashier coats lined in metal will sell, but everything else is already in the attic from J Crew and Banana Republic circa 2009.

I know but a brand can’t stay the same forever. There is a new generation , there are new trends . Technology is evolving. I didn’t mean like completely change it . I love the classic style of Burberry but I would just refresh it . Those rain coats have been the same even since WW1 . Burburry nees something new and fresh .

    Tacky? You're reaching now....
Judging from the queue after the show at the Burberry store, he has at least managed to re-create a certain excitement for the brand.
It wasn't a great collection, rather safe but he will deliver with time. He has a whole brand to shake-up.
We should not forget that his first Givenchy collection was poorly received. The success came a bit later (his 4th RTW show).
He has to find ways to be comfortable with the brand.
    I have faith in Riccardo.

at first glance at this collection on vogue runway i hated it. i didn’t understand it then I watched the show red the press release and almost changed my mind. I started to look at a lot of the pieces individually and alone so many things are wearable which is what I think is important for a brand like Burberry right now. They can’t afford to show looks that no one can wear. I think it’s nice for people to look at something and see how they can style it or fit it into their wardrobe. The show was called ‘Kingdom’ and that’s pretty confusing to me because I didn’t really get any elements of that not even from how the show was styled or even the set. the set seemed more Asian inspired if that makes sense. The streetwear stuff was not innovative which was disappointing coming from riccardo. Overall as a first collection I get the desire to be more palatable I just hope he doesn’t lose his edge forever

The show was called “kingdom” because it’s a collection that Riccardo has made with a lot of ideas he’s done since he was studying at Saint Martin and after that study, he comes back to london again after so many years working for Burberry and he aims to bring Burberry to the glory luxury level again. So in general, this is why kingdom is named

I think you probably decided you wouldn't like it from the get go. Burberry has a heritage that every designer will kind of abide by. As I said on your instagram, his first collection obviously won't be ground breaking because you need to ease clientele into a super different Burberry. How would full on goth looks appear in the boutiques? It certainly doesn't match the current aesthetic until the stores are re-fitted. I'm willing to be that we will see Hedi Slimane's first Celine runway being not extremely different from Phoebe's. This runway had some amazing pieces. And you seem to flip flop in a lot of your opinions in your videos, like whether 'wearable' runways are good or not, or if a piece is sellable, and if you like a piece or not has really arbitrary definitions. I swear you've said certain things are bad from one designer, but the same thing great from another. Yeah the runway had some bad pieces, but overall I think it was very good for a first runway with a lot of really great pieces.

theres actually a HUGE amount of thought process behind each garment and Burberry is not trying to create garments for the existing customers but instead try to create a new silhouette for new customers. its a super hard brand to design for and even harder when you're coming from a major french fashion house thats alot more accepted internationally.

This is bad. Feels like a joke. I’m very disappointed. I had high hopes that Ricardo would introduce something fresh and exciting for Burberry. But I think this is a lesson that no matter who or how great the designer is, and how big the house is. It has to be a perfect pairing between the two, like a marriage. Or it absolutely will not work.

It seems as though given Christopher Kane's track record for innovation, he should have appointed as CD at Burberry. I think his aesthetic could've pushed the brand in an interesting direction. However, I can recognize that they appointed Tisci for his viability and overall popularity. I hope that Tisci doesn't lock himself into a corner as he did towards the end of his tenure at Givenchy only to be haunted by his trends long deceased. He can be somewhat of a clothes-horse, piling on too many details and thus distracting from the overall execution. The ideas are there, they just need to be extracted better.

  • @hds8822
    @hds8822 6 років тому +62

I completely disagreed with your opinion but it was interesting to see your arguments. I know you’re not meant to be unbiased so I get why you just talked about the worst looks but you skipped a lot of the good things and often complained about a look being too much of one thing then it was bad because it was the opposite (like the clothes being to boring and wearable then saying that some outfits were bad because yous never wear them) . it was kinda confusing - if something is too plain then too over the top then Ricardo couldn’t win either way - idk I may be wrong but I thought you didn’t like the collection then just trashed everything even if there wasn’t a solid reason (like that cow thing I’m British and I never once believed that it was insulting to British people or anything I don’t even know how you got that idea). Overall - yes it wasn’t by any means a perfect collection but it was a good start especially for someone’s first time - Burberry is nothing like givenchy so trying to stay original to your own style and brand yet catering to the normal loyal target market of Burberry whilst simultaneously trying change the brands image and raise its reputation is an exceedingly hard thing to do. Now Idk you personally but you said that you had high hopes for Burberry so maybe you set your expectations too high or maybe the Burberry target market wasn’t anything like your taste so I understand why it might be a little bit of a let down. (Finally I just wanted to end on a good note and agree that those black dresses at the end were absolutely horrific imo)

I was extremely disappointed by this collection. Burberry needs to bring back Christopher Bailey. I understand that his collection was filled with $600 burgundy sweaters, wool slacks, and many MANY variations of the Burberry signature trench... And I understand that it was a bit monotonous BUT it was all beautiful. When I saw the Men's Burberry Fall 2013 collection, I thought to myself, I want to dress just like that. And now I do. I have the Kingston Trench in Honey, the wool Honey overcoats w the leather color, and a few signature leather jackets. No, I'm not paying $400 for a burgundy sweater but I picked up a few for $35 from h&m. That is when I fell in love with Burberry. That is what we need, we need a designer and a collection that will inspire us.

I would never buy Burberry again. I bought two polos from their new line
The first was $319 and the second was $400. They are made out of the cheapest fabric. I wore the cheaper one twice and there was snagging all over my back and the front had extreme piling like the shirt was falling apart. The second one I hadn't even worn I took it home then put it on and noticed 3 snags. How the heck can they sell items at the price they do for such low quality? Versace or gucci would never sell a polo that snags and pills

  • @jrh80

The new looks, even the later ones from Bailey, are way too generic and unbecoming of Burberry. Sure, many don’t see it as a luxury brand, but if it is or not, Forever 21 style looks cheap no matter what label you sew onto it. The 2012ish time period had the best Burberry collections with Eddie Redmayne and Cara Delevingne as models for the brand. The collections were so classic with a modern fit, almost like you could see someone stepping out of a beautiful black Jaguar E-Type or a new Aston Martin like Bond while wearing the brand.

I really like some of the outfits and pieces, like the beige pencil skirt with the fringe and the white blouse combo. But I do agree that it doesn't look like they're from such a big fashion house such as Burberry.

I actually really loved the new print and I LOVED the big teddy bear they made for the outside advertisements(the best thing about this collection/rebranding tbh). The ads in general were cool. I also loved the flowy skirts, but that about it. I mean there were a few(!) pieces that were nice but the rest was awful - just not good enough at all. This collection was just all over the place, trying to be cool and new but still failing to be Burberry somehow(even though he kind of tried). Tisci's attempt here makes Bailey look like a god, at least he understood the brands background and made the brand feel young and fresh a lot of times.

    TOTALLY. AGREE.
I think "older" brands recently have been kind of condescending towards consumers. They aren't doing anything innovative enough to push a consumer's comfort level, just enough to keep them placated. You can't expect great sales with a new designer when that new designer just takes his exact aesthetic and try to shove it up every Burberry lover's plaid, beige ass.
Also the gold fringe looks like it was taken directly from a lamp and hot glued on.

He was so much focus about the new logo where you can see a "B" (for Burberry) and a red "T"(for tisci ) I tough the red trip was a remembering of the "tartan design" or for Thomas Burberry but I don't think so ... You can see clearly in the cover of this video.... What a pretencious person

I can't even lie. What burberry needs is for some rapper to mention it in a song. Like they all did with gucci and versace. It needs more marketing as well as more put together shows and clothing pieces. I LOVE the trench coats and the burberry pattern in the clueless two piece jacket and skirt. That's would be so popular.

    IMHO:
    1) Dividing the collection into 5 section shows the designer's insecurity and that he lacks a singular visionary to lead the brand with. It's like placing bets on half the numbers on russian roulette.
    2) The problem with appointing him as the CD of Burberry is: When he was at the helm of Givenchy, he was very successful at spearheading the trends and turning them out with a cultist following. While I applaud him for not succumbing to the influences of Demna and the likes, the trends have moved on way passed him eons ago.
    3) Exactly what you said: I can't believe he ended with those Raf pieces and the god awful black gowns. Face palm.
