Houseman was unfortunate to emerge at a time when wingers weren't appreciated in English football. Chelsea often played a fluid front line of Tambling Osgood and Baldwin. 3 very capable strikers who could play wide or deep as required. Total football a few years before Cruyff's Ajax. Houseman was seen as a squad player who was rotated with Johnny Boyle who played in deep midfield. When Tabling left as Chelsea's record goalscorer fans expected a big money replacement rather than someone they considered a reserve make weight. After his best years during the 1970 FA Cup run and 1971 Cup Winners Cup win. Steve Kember arrived as the 4th most expensive signing in League history and more often than not made the ball winning role of Johnny Boyle his, in favour of the wide playing Houseman. When Charlie Cooke followed Tambling to Crystal Place, Houseman played more regularly again but he was still regarded by many as a 2nd rate replacement.
