    Push the clutch in so you stop the gears from turning over in the transmission oil, will spin over faster.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 3 роки тому +10

      True, but there's also a school of thought that you can wear the thrust bearings on the crank starting this way. Think of the amount of pressure the throwout bearing puts on the clutch cover, all transferred forward through the flywheel & crankshaft & there's absolutely zero oil pressure, let alone much residual lube on the thrust bearings after sitting 3 days. Pushing the clutch is valid though, it can save you if your batteries are weak and you have no way to charge them, not advisable on the regular though.

    • @billloffler8637
      @billloffler8637 3 роки тому +3

      You have a very good point. It’s just a lot of trouble to get it started if you weaken the batteries too much unless you have a booster with you.I have an old farm truck and if you put it in neutral, release the brakes and don’t push the clutch in and crank it in cold weather the truck will creep up as you crank it. 50W is really thick when cold.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 3 роки тому +3

      @@billloffler8637 good point also about cold oil, that's one of the big differences between older stuff and newer. tighter tolerances = ability to run lighter oils. Not sure what's specced for the Cummins in the vid but probably no heavier than a 20W/50 multigrade (effectively 20weight cold/ 50 running temp.) Interesting to note your truck creeping when cold, shows that transmission drag can be significant too when the temperature gets down there & that's one area the oil grades haven't got much lighter with newer kit.
      Fair to say it's horses for courses & probably declutching to cold start is going to be a lot less hard on older machines due to the oil grade and general tolerances compared to modern engines & the benefits there of less strain on battery/starter etc outweigh any negative effect. (to be honest, anything that specs less than a 10W/40 grade in the crankcase is engineered with fuel efficiency over mechanical longevity in my view anyway!)

    3 days and she needs a jump, sounds like it might be time to invest in some batteries or find out what's causing them to get drained.

      I was going to say basically this. If you don't have a battery master switch, install one and shut it off when you leave it. I go 3 days and come back, switch on and have full power.

I remember a drum of it always around next to the 30W for engine oil. I think Eaton was trying to get off of 85X140 in the transmission and going to 50W mineral oil at the time. Hi and how are you today. I noticed on your truck which is a beautiful truck that you have that front shade covering almost half of your windshield. I don’t want to be a naysayer but you have to sit in your seat mostly lowered to see through and over the steering wheel to the outside. I notice a lot of drivers are doing this now and I think that’s possibly illegal if nothing else restricting your view. I would like your two cents on this. I don’t think it’s cool either. When I was truck driving he would never see something like this or very rarely. I drove back in the 80s.

    A lot of trucks have a clutch interlock system where the engine won’t even crank unless the clutch pedal is depressed when starting.

    Beautiful truck inside and out. But put some batteries in it.

    The batteries are linked in parallel. But what surprises me is that American trucks obviously only have 12 V on-board. Is that so? Here in Europe trucks have mostly 24 V.
    BTW this is a beautiful Pete.

      Yeah, almost everything in the states is 12v. Older stuff and military stuff is all I know of thats 24v.
