I have a border collie whose parents were sheep herding dogs. I took her in at 10 weeks and she is the smartest, most loyal dog I could ever have imagined. She learned high fives and sitting the first week I had her. She is always learning new tricks and behaviors and despite border collies not being the most cuddly dogs, she loves to cuddle up with me at night and helps with my anxiety attacks. Seriously the best dog!
I own a Border Collie/Jack Russell mix. What a perfect dog for the farm. He helps control, by digging, the ground squirrels, voles, gophers, mice and rats around the farm. He is now 13 years old and still catches a farm pest almost every day. When younger he was running hunting, walking, digging, or chasing at least five hours a day. I have learned from this dog how much exercise dogs need. He has been trained, by watching the Cesar Milan shows, not to bark, not to get over excited, not to be possessive, and how to get along with other dogs. He is the most loving, intelligent, cuddly dog anyone could ever want. He, by training, does not bother our free range chickens, the neighbors sheep or horses, and knows that he shouldn't chase cats but can chase jack rabbits and deer. He is good around children and people that don't like dogs seem to like our dog. By petting and grooming him daily to remove burs and fox tails he trusts me completely. He becomes upset when we are upset and hates it when we argue or raise our voice. He has made me a better, more balanced person. Our dog seems to be more angel sent from heaven than dog.

I have a 5 year old female Border, named Maggie. Before her, I had a female border that lived for 18 years. This is by far the best breed out there. Maggie is exceptionally intelligent, very active and a complete joy in the house. Its amazing that once trained, you never really have to tell her anything as she just does it. I will caution others thinking of a Border: Maggie requires at least 70 kms a week in walks and plenty of Ball/Frisbee sessions mixed in. Luckily I can take her to work and anywhere else I go. My wife and I consider her our child and we are better people for the love she gives us.
My BC was bar none.. the best dog I ever had.. So freaking smart.. it's almost unreal. She passed 20 years ago. Once you have a smart dog, you just can't deal with dummies anymore.. no matter how cute they are. Total game changer. She had a thing to chew up my wallets.. First one I was like... Look.. all this stuff in here is important! She would get one every once in a while (I think to get back at me for whatever.. lack of play.. out time.. etc). I'm serious as a heart attack, and this is not BS.. She would carefully pull everything out of the wallet, set it all aside, then chew up the wallet. Hilarious! It was just too amazing to be mad!
Cody is 10 yrs old now. The breed is like NO other dog... they have the ability to learn nuances of all sorts, depending upon the kind of "work" they either have or assign to themselves. Devotion and dedication to service are the 2 hallmarks that accompany their unique intelligence. They are consummate athletes... able to twist, turn, jump/turn, flip... you name it. A strong will is integral to their personality, so you must unabashedly take the role of "Alpha dog" and teach them their boundaries. Setting boundaries is so necessary, and is not cruel (as some people might think). Unless you are able to spend a lot of time and effort in exercise / work, do yourself and the border colliie (you are considering) a favor.... DON'T GET ONE.... they NEED LOTS of exercise and stimulus.

My border collie got a lot of exercise three hours a day in summer he wòuld run round the fields out of sight at the age of eleven his back legs went we had to put him to sleep he left a big hole in my life have just got a tattoo of him on my arm he had a good life really missing him

So, based on your comment and think hiking is not good for border collies in sense they might be stressed mentally, although they can reduce the energy by running. We're taking our dog for hikes in new, unfamiliar places to him once a time, more often in summer. So it's definitely not predictable for him and he does freak out. When I stop the car at the start point he goes crazy and barks. I unknowilingly enforced this behavior by just letting him out and now it takes more time to fix. Now I'm teaching him that being calm when we stop means praise and opening door, but barking means exact opposite - door will close. Once he calms down and get out of the car he's still nervous, whining or barking. He really wants to run, scout the area and seems more happy when we let him. He's runninh there and back, there and back to check on us, again and again...I see this is something he's made for and he seems to enjoy it, although it might be stressful for him. When we try to keep him on leash in new environment it's much worse. We're trying to get his attention by ball, sticks, treats but he's losing focus on us very quickly. The world is just so much interesting! So I struggle with the decision to off leash him (always with muzzle), because he can get into trouble. On the leash I have more control over him but it can be stressful for both of us. On the other hand he's much better when I walk him where we live, as he's it's more "predictable". When I see *some* other people how their big dogs are calm of leash and close to the owner I ask them: "Hey, how did you trained the dog to not run all over the place and being close to you?" "Well, I don't know, he's always been like this" FYI: Our dog is a mixed breed most probably part border collie. We got him as a puppy and his mother didn't looked like border collie. Later when he grew up it was clear. I love the dog, the breed and his potentional. But this breed is challenging to the new dog owners like us...that's my advice to others.

Our girl was just a year old last March, and it's no stretch to say she is the best dog we could ever have hoped to have. We weren't even looking for a specific breed, she was more of a rescue off Craigslist, but I already had a soft spot for BC's so it wasn't a tough call to bring her home. She was 14 weeks old when we got her, and within two weeks of being with us she had broken my mom's anti-dog shell and made friends with our 3 cats - including a 15 year old - who had little to no dog experience. Her empathy is ridiculous, meaning if someone sneezes or coughs she MUST check them and make sure they're ok. The gentle snuffling she gives the kitties is sweet enough to give ya cavities! I am pretty sure she wouldn't be doing so well if my husband and I weren't home all day however. She gets at least an hour of playtime/running in the morning, another hour or more in the afternoon, and a mile or so walk around midnight. This seems to be enough, but keeping up with her activity needs would be daunting if we didn't have such a flexible schedule. She's a lot of work and worth every minute!
I've got a border collie. It was one of my life decisions and it is absolutelly worth it. It's not a dog. He's a personality. A perfect and cute creature with a nice behaviour. IDK what to say. I love him, even though he can be really annoying sometimes. (In a good meaning.)
My border collie Shilo has the unusual habit of putting toys together or in a row that are of the same colour which is strange as dogs are red green colour blind. E.g. He will have a pile of blue rings in one corner and all his red balls in another. He will also put a ball inside a ring or a small ring inside another ring. Basically he'll try to put anything through one of his rings like a rope toy a towel and even a door curtain. His favourite trick though is to put his head through a large ring over his head then around his neck and another ring or even two or three over his nose when he wants to get attention.
Cool! :) Colour blind doesn't mean they are not different shades, or different smells. Collies are cool... the ones I have really known, seem psychic. In videos they correctly respond to "random" commands, as they are said, NOT after they've heard it.
One of mine learned a nifty trick of putting his own collar on rather than wait for me to do it. He learned within a week of coming to live with us that when we put a collar on him it means we're going out so figured if he puts his own collar he'll get to go out. Brings it to you first out of courtesy and if you don't respond to it being plonked on your knee, shoulder or face he gets hold with his teeth, gently tosses it up in the air just enough to get his snout right through and then "Tah-dah!!!" Then he marches up and stands there "Oi bitch... I'm wearing my collar. Look.. look I put my collar on... Get a shift on c'mon lessgo"
Dogs see in Blue and Yellow colours. All other colours are different shades - so red would appear a really disgusting vomit colour (Yellowish - but like beige) Green appears as a slightly darker yellow - not bright. Purple looks like a really dark blue. So it isn't magic - they can distinguish between shades of Yellow & Blue.
We've had Border Collies for 20 years now. Currently have two aged 6 and 2 years. All have different personalities but all super smart, intelligent, fun loving and very loyal. Wouldn't consider a different breed.
I have 3.After 40 years of German Shepherds my daughter wanted a change.So glad she talked me into the change.The oldest, Molly, is my sweet little girl.
my border collie loves meeting new people so much that i have to deadbolt all the doors or i will find my dog outside playing people who just walked by. he watches me open doors then figures out how to open them himself. he has even figured out how to open my truck doors from the inside and let himself out, which means if i dont lock him in the truck when i get gas he comes running in the store to say high to everyone in there.
Dwayne L learning what makes them tick. Most dogs are food motivated, collies have a high prey drive and are toy orientated. Most everything we taught ours (he 2 now and still a bundle of energy) we used toys as the reward.
Great info and good to see a covered den, so many people don't and it makes a huge difference for the dog. My collie loves her den and goes to bed at 9pm and gets up at 5:30 with us. We walk and play for an hour and a half in the morning and evening and she gets two fifteen mins ball chasing during the day. They make a wonderful pet as long as you make time to exercise well.

I have a very active 8y.o. male border collie, named Rocco. He is my daily exercise mate, raised on only 5-star rated dog food, and exercised rigorously 3x daily/7 days per week. He grew up in the Pacific NW, and is highly trained /socialized. Very well cared for, with a wardrobe of 20 garments. Fed spirulina, pureed pumpkin, and plain Greek yogurt with every meal. Trained to walk off lease at heel, sit, stay, back-up, roll left/right, circle left/right, retrieve toys, perfect recall, very protective, and strongly bonded to me for life. A "perfect" dog in every sense of the word.
My Border Collie monty died a week ago and my heart is broken Though it’s worse for my wife as She Cries a lot since his death Fortunately I am getting a blue Merle this weekend And so I look forward to his training , As we love the border collie breed , I could never be without one
Peter Berry, so sorry for the loss of your beloved BC Monty. I know the feeling. I lost my red Merle Toby Grey almost 3 years ago to lymphoma and it took a full year for me to grieve his loss. Soon you will laugh with your wife when you remember all the funny things Monty used to do. We replaced Toby with a springer spaniel female named Stella Rose. She is so sweet but not nearly as smart as Toby. When I retire next year I'm planning on adopting another BC for me and a playmate for Stella.
I have a 6 month old tri colour called Alfie and we love him to bits we can't believe how clever he is....he comes first time of calling, sits, lies down, and fetches his ball ( but doesn't always give it back) he has changed mine and my wife's life.... everyday we take him on very long walks when before we got him we would just be Sat at home watching tv....... so if you've got the time and the energy then these are the dogs for you 😁🐾
our Border Collie is so smart, that he takes a blanket and wraps it around our other dog's (Australian Shepard) head and then bops him on the head, with his paw, all the while staring at us with a big happy expression.....if you sneeze he stops what he's doing, even if he's eating and runs over and kisses you because he thinks somethings wrong., if you take a nap he always lays down and snuggles, if you watch a movie he will watch it with you as he completely focuses on every detail he sees for up to an hour, he is always with us, affectionate and kind. His hair feeIs like silk, I love all dogs, but this dog thinks and problem solves better than most stupid humans I know. Border Collies are surely just fantastic!
I have two BC. 11yrs and 4yr old. Before that I had two BC Also. Everything you said in this video is 100% accurate. I could never have a different breed. Borders are what make life great.
I do training games in the morning, then a long walk with games, play with him and give him brain games. Then lead walking in the afternoon and in the evening b4 bed at 8pm. We have to put him to bed in the kitche at 8pm because he will never settle and i need some time to rest. If im cooking dinner in the kitchen or something he will chill on his bed but if i want to have time to relax he does everything he can to stop it. I dont get much time for myself anymore apart from cleaning house, washing from all the extra mud and training him. Hes only 9 mnths so i hope he will calm down a bit but probably not. We also learn tricks and go training on sundays. Was made redundant last year and took on this dog as a rescue as i thought id be working from home. Had no idea it would be this tough. He also started running off to other dogs and not returning this past few weeks. That never happened b4. He would have a play with other dogs but when i called and walked off he would come. Now he just ignores me till i go and retrieve him. :(
New dog every five years is a great policy. Training a 1yo BC with the help of a trained 5yo BC is huge! The pack is interesting. Yes, issues to resolve, but exercise and space to run is good. Neurosis-pouncing- can be helped with quick recognition of "zoning in" corrected by redirection... and paying attention for extreme focus... again corrected by redirection. Also, dog pack with youth dogs/play helps with neurosis.
My collie is called shadow, he lived on a farm when he was a pup , He loves cuddles and doing training, he barks when people knock at the door and he loves playing with children , every week or two we go hiking but if we don't go he has a sun around on the field
We have a 4 year old male Border Collie as a pet in our family. We've had a female Border Collie in the past too. This video is right on the money with the advice for those considering them as a pet, especially giving them social skills with other dogs. Our male BC had a few bad moments with other dogs at the dog park when he was a young puppy, which have made him cautious with other dogs he's unfamiliar with. The breeds need more than just walks, they needs attention and mental stimulation. They spend most of their time searching for it. They do settle down more as they mature. They are a highly intelligent and intuitive breed with the right nurturing. Great video.
My bc is personal, like he only likes certain people and "screams" when strangers are in the house. But if he decides he likes someone at the dog park he is very demanding of pets. He is definitely a cuddler, I got him as a pup, and I'm not entirely sure how I do it, but most animals I raised become cuddlers
Our beautiful BC ( Maggie ) was the savior of my life when I got her 9 yrs ago, sadly she passed away only 1 month ago due to complications with her diabetes. When I go mountain biking with my boy Gus he chooses the route we take, always stops at crossroads for me to decide if we should follow route or not, last winter he brought me a deer antler and I let him know how happy I was with his find and since then he has tracked down four sets
I have just collected my Border Collie, She is 8 weeks old. I have had her at home for 3 days and she is already going to the toilet outside and sitting when commanded. Can't wait to start her with professional training in about a month once her vaccinations are complete. She is such a joy to have around.
@@Angelapv02 Hi Angela. If she is kept groomed she sheds very little. While we’ve been in lockdown and unable to take her to a professional groomer her shedding has increased slightly. I would not say she sheds a lot. It’s far less than our previous dog a Golden Retriever.

My dog Toby is a border collie and lab mix. He’s 10 years old and for the most part still acts like a puppy. I got him when he was a year old. His original owners couldn’t keep him because of their expensive medical bills. We were looking for a dog so they gave him to us. He absolutely LOVES his tennis ball 🎾, loves chew toys, and empty plastic water bottles. I noticed he likes to herd around a lot of things. Which I always found funny! I’ve always wondered why he loves his tennis ball so much ?!

my BC Winn Dixie is a 3 year old cuddle bug and ball-aholic. he hates feet but loves his nightly sweet potato treat. his face foods are chili dogs from sonic and nachos from tacobell. he loves gobbling noodles and boiled chicken. he herds our two 14 year old shitzus and the chickens! he has horrible anxiety, especially during storms. he likes to play with his cousin sandy and his grandpa. at night he curls up by my head on our bed and ends up falling asleep on his back with his legs straight up in the air. Winn Dixie is my pride and joy and makes anyone who meets him fall in love!

LH Grunge I would recommend going to a dog training facility close to your location, they are professional trainers and can help you eith that instantly! Also, when owning a BC you have to show that YOU are the boss, and when commanding things as "follow" or "sit" etc. Rouge has to do it and not be thinking "If I dont do it there will be no consequences anyway".
LH Grunge I also have a 5 month old border collie pup. She used to dig a lot but if you put their poop on top of favourite digging spots it discourages them. Nala has nearly stopped entirely since I started doing that :) Hipe it helps!
A border collie is so much easier to deal with and train when you KNOW you have a border collie. My Leo is a rescue and they said he was a lab mix. Ha! Hahaha! No. Not even close. But all the "bad behavior" was easily fixed when I figured out what motivated him.
This video is dead accurate , our family presently owns our third border , he's 9 years old and still active , although obviously slowing down a bit , 2 hours free running per day , but does need mental stimulation also . True as well is the fact that they need their own private corner to rest , they can be nervous at times ,if they don't always obey you don't think they're stupid , they will just do what they want to do , if they can get away with it.
We have a wonderfully loving and affectionate bc/Aussie Shepherd cross named Scarlett (on the right of my thumbnail). We inherited her from a family member when she was two (now four) and were therefore not able to train her as a pup, though I did take her for walks every time I saw her. She responds very well on and off leash, and takes hand directions (right/left) brilliantly. She barks only a few times when someone's at the door, and stops as soon as she knows the person at the door is welcomed. I make sure she (and I) get plenty of daily exercise whatever the weather (and I live just north-west of Toronto). She loves the snow and hates the heat, and can spot a cotton-tail on a moonless night at fifty metres. Which is funny, because she's also walked right past ones I've seen in broad daylight! Chasing squirrels is a passion, too, though I don't let her catch anything. Properly trained, she'd make a great hunting dog, as she's a natural pointer. But I'm long past those days. I prefer cuddling up with her after a long walk, or letting her think she's a lap dog. She's wonderful with our grandson, and most other dogs, but will get aggressive with certain others irrespective of size or breed. So she's an alpha all right, but she knows who the big dog is. The guy with the barbeque and lemon cookies...
They can and will open any door in your house , remove any shoelaces from your shoes/trainers And also pick up other dogs bad habbits (my daughters asbo cocker introduced our collie to the joys of digging holes)

Actually, if you don't have any sheep's or cows to herd, your BC will instinctively find something to herd as my Tess Siobhan and Gypsy Rose Lee taught me. Tess's son and his girlfriend Little Bo Peep also liked to herd little animals, kids on bicycles if skateboards, geese, chipmunks, and my brother riding his lawn mower.
I own a border collie it is 13 weeks,my mum heard some place in rotchdale a farm we're selling puppies my mum stuck around a bit to see the mother and the farther they were gorgeous,the farmer got hold of the pup by the scruff of the neck and just threw the dog across the farm I were disgraced thank heavens we willingly saved him!!

I adore Border Collies,they are loyal ,highly intelligent ,and make brilliant "pets! in the right environment.I had 2 in the past.mother and son,both amazing family dogs,both died of old age and all that came with that,broke my heart.I'm almost 66 now and have my third BC,he will be a year old in August,off working stock,again highly intelligent,absolutely adore him.He was hard work to begin with,but to be honest I think that comes from the intelligence of the breed,theyre thinkers ,always one step ahead and capable of so much that they keep us on our toes lol But ,they're the most amazing and loyal dogs,need loads of exercise,and will be your friend for life x
If you've ever seen the Australian Kelpies you'll see a working dog. They wont stop till they drop from exhaustion if you don't stop them. Incidentally I have a Border Collie with a touch of Australian Blue Cattle in him and although he loves going for walks he isn't really all that active and is quite content to just lie around. He does love the beach and I take there almost every day unless I have to go away fire fighting. I also take him into the Outback camping which he loves.
I got my border collie 5 years ago and love him. He's great at flyball and I can walk him off the leash. He listens better than my 11 yearold border mixed golden lol. I can call himm back when he decides to chase a rabbit not the other dog. She's a great dog too. I would consider getting another border.

My BC Ned passed away 4 years ago and was the best BC I ever had. He hated the postman, but that was his only fault. Ned was my dog before anybody else. We now have Loki and he's just the same, including the postman problem, except that he is Her Ladyship's dog. It's frustrating to be the second choice "owner" in the house and there's nothing that can do about that.

Me and my 7-month collie named Yolo live in one of the busiest cities in China, the city of Chengdu. Her obedience training has been very well but her chasing e-bikes are giving me some headache. E-bikes are like motorbikes but slower, smaller and work with battery, very usually seen in China. I know she's full of energy and naturally likes to herd, so I try to take her for a run to drain her energy then we walk and I could train her more. But the problem is the city is so busy with the population of 157.28 million, and approximately 5 million e-bikes using everyday. By waiting a traffic light there'd be 30 e-bikes passing already in probably 30 seconds, right in front of her face. I know basic training skills of restraining and stoping dog chasing cars, but it can't help me here cuz the challenge is to intensive. Before we could walk to somewhere to run, she got too excited and tense, and I got tired already. I just don't know if she'll calm down a little when she's older, cuz I'm very sporty and would love to take her with me.
Recently rescued my BC, Belle from a puppy mill where she was used for breeding for 4 years of her life. She has bonded very quickly with me, but is very unsure of other humans/dogs. It took me 2 weeks just to let me touch her back. But with much patience and dedication, now she knows sit, down, come, and will do ANYTHING to catch a frisbee. She also is getting along very well with my German Shepherd rescue, Loki (I’ve had him longer than Belle, but he also came from an abusive situation). However, new dogs and humans are still very scary to her. Any tips or thoughts since she missed that crucial socialization stage?
I have a colleague who has a BC. She is so energetic and has to come and touch all of us one by one. But my other friend has another BC. and she is so gentle, respectful and gentle one. Is it possible?
My family recently got a 4-month-old border collie puppy from our uncle, who is going through a rough divorce and doesn't have time for the puppy he recently got. The puppy's name is Hope. He came into our home on short notice, and he is completely untrained. We are working on training him right now, and he is most reactive to me and my father. My mother is annoyed and wants to get rid of him. We also have two other dogs, two mini schnauzers (4 & 2) years old who are grouchy and not very well trained so My dad and I took this puppy as an opportunity to improve our current dogs' behaviors as well as the puppy's. Do you have any tips for us? Hope will need to learn quickly (which he is- in fact, good at) in order for us to keep him in our home. I would be disappointed to see him put up for adoption with all of the work I have put into him.
They're beautiful and smart, but never forget they are dogs. My new BC chased/herded farmyard pets, and a rescue puppy we had decided to also chase (never had before), then harmed the farm pets. Nonstop stress. It escalated, and the killer puppy had to go. The BC chews cords (usually expensive and attached to computers or lamps), shoes, furniture, and constantly in the garbage. She is aggressive to a gentle 14 year old Yorkie. She was miserable to house-train. And many will chase cars. They are not a good fit for older people who want a laid-back dog to cuddle with. They are also a tripping hazard because they are quick and quiet. It really isn't fair to this breed to wind up with a non-athlete or sedentary lifestyle, and I regret taking her in. If you are young and energetic, you can work with one. And you have to. I hope you do well with your new arrival, and understand that they can have a lot of issues, just like any dog, and require a LOT of time. Good luck.
I have two bc puppys (5 months & 3m) mine learn very quickly. The little girl(3m) does not want to listen as much and is very stubborn. They will also get very distructibe and chew up everthing if they get bored, so exercise them regularly. They also need to have their mind challenged. I would try obidence of agility. They are a very high energy dog. Once they are trained they are really good dogs. They are also really smart so yours should be easy to train. Good luck

I know from experience it is hard to get another dog when you have said goodbye but just remember the new dog doesn't take the place of the old dog, your heart just makes room for the new dog as many times as needed. I have four dogs in my heart now

Hey guys my friend just adopted a border collie and he has another brother up for adoption. I have a 5 month old border collie named Sadie. She is a good dog. But my son played with her with a lazier pointer and now she chases and stairs at shadows and licks the wall. He is a blue merle border collie. Not a tri Tri colour means three colours.Tri means three The blue Gray and White is called blue merle. You also get red merle brown merle.
I have a 4 yr old border collie. We have a great relationship and he listens very well but has a bad habit of chasing after and picking up rocks with his teeth and also pulling up grass. He will do this during walks when he gets anxious or excited (can be good excited or bad excited). We live in the mountains so there are a lot of loose rocks around. I have tried distracting him (works for a moment until the next time he does it). It is damaging his teeth and it's hard to have him off leash for fear of this happening. Any ideas?

I have a border collie whose parents were sheep herding dogs. I took her in at 10 weeks and she is the smartest, most loyal dog I could ever have imagined. She learned high fives and sitting the first week I had her. She is always learning new tricks and behaviors and despite border collies not being the most cuddly dogs, she loves to cuddle up with me at night and helps with my anxiety attacks. Seriously the best dog!
I own a Border Collie/Jack Russell mix. What a perfect dog for the farm. He helps control, by digging, the ground squirrels, voles, gophers, mice and rats around the farm. He is now 13 years old and still catches a farm pest almost every day. When younger he was running hunting, walking, digging, or chasing at least five hours a day. I have learned from this dog how much exercise dogs need. He has been trained, by watching the Cesar Milan shows, not to bark, not to get over excited, not to be possessive, and how to get along with other dogs. He is the most loving, intelligent, cuddly dog anyone could ever want. He, by training, does not bother our free range chickens, the neighbors sheep or horses, and knows that he shouldn't chase cats but can chase jack rabbits and deer. He is good around children and people that don't like dogs seem to like our dog. By petting and grooming him daily to remove burs and fox tails he trusts me completely. He becomes upset when we are upset and hates it when we argue or raise our voice. He has made me a better, more balanced person. Our dog seems to be more angel sent from heaven than dog.

I have a 5 year old female Border, named Maggie. Before her, I had a female border that lived for 18 years. This is by far the best breed out there. Maggie is exceptionally intelligent, very active and a complete joy in the house. Its amazing that once trained, you never really have to tell her anything as she just does it.
I will caution others thinking of a Border: Maggie requires at least 70 kms a week in walks and plenty of Ball/Frisbee sessions mixed in. Luckily I can take her to work and anywhere else I go. My wife and I consider her our child and we are better people for the love she gives us.
My BC was bar none.. the best dog I ever had.. So freaking smart.. it's almost unreal. She passed 20 years ago. Once you have a smart dog, you just can't deal with dummies anymore.. no matter how cute they are. Total game changer. She had a thing to chew up my wallets.. First one I was like... Look.. all this stuff in here is important! She would get one every once in a while (I think to get back at me for whatever.. lack of play.. out time.. etc). I'm serious as a heart attack, and this is not BS.. She would carefully pull everything out of the wallet, set it all aside, then chew up the wallet. Hilarious! It was just too amazing to be mad!

Cody is 10 yrs old now. The breed is like NO other dog... they have the ability to learn nuances of all sorts, depending upon the kind of "work" they either have or assign to themselves. Devotion and dedication to service are the 2 hallmarks that accompany their unique intelligence. They are consummate athletes... able to twist, turn, jump/turn, flip... you name it. A strong will is integral to their personality, so you must unabashedly take the role of "Alpha dog" and teach them their boundaries. Setting boundaries is so necessary, and is not cruel (as some people might think). Unless you are able to spend a lot of time and effort in exercise / work, do yourself and the border colliie (you are considering) a favor.... DON'T GET ONE.... they NEED LOTS of exercise and stimulus.

Great video. Teaching your border collie how to settle down is absolutely key. He/she should have a predictable schedule, otherwise, they freak out.
So, based on your comment and think hiking is not good for border collies in sense they might be stressed mentally, although they can reduce the energy by running.
We're taking our dog for hikes in new, unfamiliar places to him once a time, more often in summer.
So it's definitely not predictable for him and he does freak out. When I stop the car at the start point he goes crazy and barks. I unknowilingly enforced this behavior by just letting him out and now it takes more time to fix. Now I'm teaching him that being calm when we stop means praise and opening door, but barking means exact opposite - door will close. Once he calms down and get out of the car he's still nervous, whining or barking. He really wants to run, scout the area and seems more happy when we let him. He's runninh there and back, there and back to check on us, again and again...I see this is something he's made for and he seems to enjoy it, although it might be stressful for him.
When we try to keep him on leash in new environment it's much worse. We're trying to get his attention by ball, sticks, treats but he's losing focus on us very quickly. The world is just so much interesting! So I struggle with the decision to off leash him (always with muzzle), because he can get into trouble. On the leash I have more control over him but it can be stressful for both of us. On the other hand he's much better when I walk him where we live, as he's it's more "predictable".
When I see *some* other people how their big dogs are calm of leash and close to the owner I ask them: "Hey, how did you trained the dog to not run all over the place and being close to you?" "Well, I don't know, he's always been like this"
FYI: Our dog is a mixed breed most probably part border collie. We got him as a puppy and his mother didn't looked like border collie. Later when he grew up it was clear. I love the dog, the breed and his potentional. But this breed is challenging to the new dog owners like us...that's my advice to others.
We have three collies, two smooth and one rough, best dogs we have ever had and just to prove our madness we are getting a rescue border collie puppy who is coming home tomorrow!

Our girl was just a year old last March, and it's no stretch to say she is the best dog we could ever have hoped to have. We weren't even looking for a specific breed, she was more of a rescue off Craigslist, but I already had a soft spot for BC's so it wasn't a tough call to bring her home. She was 14 weeks old when we got her, and within two weeks of being with us she had broken my mom's anti-dog shell and made friends with our 3 cats - including a 15 year old - who had little to no dog experience. Her empathy is ridiculous, meaning if someone sneezes or coughs she MUST check them and make sure they're ok. The gentle snuffling she gives the kitties is sweet enough to give ya cavities! I am pretty sure she wouldn't be doing so well if my husband and I weren't home all day however. She gets at least an hour of playtime/running in the morning, another hour or more in the afternoon, and a mile or so walk around midnight. This seems to be enough, but keeping up with her activity needs would be daunting if we didn't have such a flexible schedule. She's a lot of work and worth every minute!
I've got a border collie. It was one of my life decisions and it is absolutelly worth it. It's not a dog. He's a personality. A perfect and cute creature with a nice behaviour. IDK what to say. I love him, even though he can be really annoying sometimes. (In a good meaning.)
My border collie Shilo has the unusual habit of putting toys together or in a row that are of the same colour which is strange as dogs are red green colour blind. E.g. He will have a pile of blue rings in one corner and all his red balls in another. He will also put a ball inside a ring or a small ring inside another ring. Basically he'll try to put anything through one of his rings like a rope toy a towel and even a door curtain. His favourite trick though is to put his head through a large ring over his head then around his neck and another ring or even two or three over his nose when he wants to get attention.

Cool! :) Colour blind doesn't mean they are not different shades, or different smells. Collies are cool... the ones I have really known, seem psychic. In videos they correctly respond to "random" commands, as they are said, NOT after they've heard it.
One of mine learned a nifty trick of putting his own collar on rather than wait for me to do it. He learned within a week of coming to live with us that when we put a collar on him it means we're going out so figured if he puts his own collar he'll get to go out.
Brings it to you first out of courtesy and if you don't respond to it being plonked on your knee, shoulder or face he gets hold with his teeth, gently tosses it up in the air just enough to get his snout right through and then "Tah-dah!!!"
Then he marches up and stands there "Oi bitch... I'm wearing my collar. Look.. look I put my collar on... Get a shift on c'mon lessgo"

All other colours are different shades - so red would appear a really disgusting vomit colour (Yellowish - but like beige)
Green appears as a slightly darker yellow - not bright.
Purple looks like a really dark blue.
So it isn't magic - they can distinguish between shades of Yellow & Blue.
We've had Border Collies for 20 years now. Currently have two aged 6 and 2 years. All have different personalities but all super smart, intelligent, fun loving and very loyal. Wouldn't consider a different breed.

my border collie loves meeting new people so much that i have to deadbolt all the doors or i will find my dog outside playing people who just walked by. he watches me open doors then figures out how to open them himself. he has even figured out how to open my truck doors from the inside and let himself out, which means if i dont lock him in the truck when i get gas he comes running in the store to say high to everyone in there.
I had two border collie mixes that were awesome dogs. They loved swimming in lakes as their favorite activity! Great hiking companions and cuddlers.

Dwayne L learning what makes them tick. Most dogs are food motivated, collies have a high prey drive and are toy orientated. Most everything we taught ours (he 2 now and still a bundle of energy) we used toys as the reward.

Great info and good to see a covered den, so many people don't and it makes a huge difference for the dog. My collie loves her den and goes to bed at 9pm and gets up at 5:30 with us. We walk and play for an hour and a half in the morning and evening and she gets two fifteen mins ball chasing during the day. They make a wonderful pet as long as you make time to exercise well.
I have a service dog and she's a border collie/australian shepherd mix. It was SUPER easy to train her. Very smart.

I have a very active 8y.o. male border collie, named Rocco. He is my daily exercise mate, raised on only 5-star rated dog food, and exercised rigorously 3x daily/7 days per week. He grew up in the Pacific NW, and is highly trained /socialized. Very well cared for, with a wardrobe of 20 garments. Fed spirulina, pureed pumpkin, and plain Greek yogurt with every meal. Trained to walk off lease at heel, sit, stay, back-up, roll left/right, circle left/right, retrieve toys, perfect recall, very protective, and strongly bonded to me for life. A "perfect" dog in every sense of the word.

Peter Berry, so sorry for the loss of your beloved BC Monty. I know the feeling. I lost my red Merle Toby Grey almost 3 years ago to lymphoma and it took a full year for me to grieve his loss. Soon you will laugh with your wife when you remember all the funny things Monty used to do. We replaced Toby with a springer spaniel female named Stella Rose. She is so sweet but not nearly as smart as Toby. When I retire next year I'm planning on adopting another BC for me and a playmate for Stella.

I have a 6 month old tri colour called Alfie and we love him to bits we can't believe how clever he is....he comes first time of calling, sits, lies down, and fetches his ball ( but doesn't always give it back) he has changed mine and my wife's life.... everyday we take him on very long walks when before we got him we would just be Sat at home watching tv....... so if you've got the time and the energy then these are the dogs for you 😁🐾
our Border Collie is so smart, that he takes a blanket and wraps it around our other dog's (Australian Shepard) head and then bops him on the head, with his paw, all the while staring at us with a big happy expression.....if you sneeze he stops what he's doing, even if he's eating and runs over and kisses you because he thinks somethings wrong., if you take a nap he always lays down and snuggles, if you watch a movie he will watch it with you as he completely focuses on every detail he sees for up to an hour, he is always with us, affectionate and kind. His hair feeIs like silk, I love all dogs, but this dog thinks and problem solves better than most stupid humans I know. Border Collies are surely just fantastic!

I do training games in the morning, then a long walk with games, play with him and give him brain games. Then lead walking in the afternoon and in the evening b4 bed at 8pm. We have to put him to bed in the kitche at 8pm because he will never settle and i need some time to rest. If im cooking dinner in the kitchen or something he will chill on his bed but if i want to have time to relax he does everything he can to stop it. I dont get much time for myself anymore apart from cleaning house, washing from all the extra mud and training him. Hes only 9 mnths so i hope he will calm down a bit but probably not. We also learn tricks and go training on sundays. Was made redundant last year and took on this dog as a rescue as i thought id be working from home. Had no idea it would be this tough. He also started running off to other dogs and not returning this past few weeks. That never happened b4. He would have a play with other dogs but when i called and walked off he would come. Now he just ignores me till i go and retrieve him. :(
New dog every five years is a great policy. Training a 1yo BC with the help of a trained 5yo BC is huge! The pack is interesting. Yes, issues to resolve, but exercise and space to run is good. Neurosis-pouncing- can be helped with quick recognition of "zoning in" corrected by redirection... and paying attention for extreme focus... again corrected by redirection. Also, dog pack with youth dogs/play helps with neurosis.

He loves cuddles and doing training, he barks when people knock at the door and he loves playing with children , every week or two we go hiking but if we don't go he has a sun around on the field
We have a 4 year old male Border Collie as a pet in our family. We've had a female Border Collie in the past too. This video is right on the money with the advice for those considering them as a pet, especially giving them social skills with other dogs. Our male BC had a few bad moments with other dogs at the dog park when he was a young puppy, which have made him cautious with other dogs he's unfamiliar with. The breeds need more than just walks, they needs attention and mental stimulation. They spend most of their time searching for it. They do settle down more as they mature. They are a highly intelligent and intuitive breed with the right nurturing. Great video.
My bc is personal, like he only likes certain people and "screams" when strangers are in the house. But if he decides he likes someone at the dog park he is very demanding of pets. He is definitely a cuddler, I got him as a pup, and I'm not entirely sure how I do it, but most animals I raised become cuddlers

Our beautiful BC ( Maggie ) was the savior of my life when I got her 9 yrs ago, sadly she passed away only 1 month ago due to complications with her diabetes. When I go mountain biking with my boy Gus he chooses the route we take, always stops at crossroads for me to decide if we should follow route or not, last winter he brought me a deer antler and I let him know how happy I was with his find and since then he has tracked down four sets

Can't wait to start her with professional training in about a month once her vaccinations are complete. She is such a joy to have around.

@@Angelapv02 Hi Angela. If she is kept groomed she sheds very little. While we’ve been in lockdown and unable to take her to a professional groomer her shedding has increased slightly. I would not say she sheds a lot. It’s far less than our previous dog a Golden Retriever.

I have a border collie/ golden retriever mix. She’s 10 weeks old tomorrow, her name is Kit ( short for Kit-Kat). She’s the sweetest, but she does get into things if you don’t pay attention to her.
My dog Toby is a border collie and lab mix. He’s 10 years old and for the most part still acts like a puppy. I got him when he was a year old. His original owners couldn’t keep him because of their expensive medical bills. We were looking for a dog so they gave him to us. He absolutely LOVES his tennis ball 🎾, loves chew toys, and empty plastic water bottles. I noticed he likes to herd around a lot of things. Which I always found funny! I’ve always wondered why he loves his tennis ball so much ?!

my BC Winn Dixie is a 3 year old cuddle bug and ball-aholic. he hates feet but loves his nightly sweet potato treat. his face foods are chili dogs from sonic and nachos from tacobell. he loves gobbling noodles and boiled chicken. he herds our two 14 year old shitzus and the chickens! he has horrible anxiety, especially during storms. he likes to play with his cousin sandy and his grandpa. at night he curls up by my head on our bed and ends up falling asleep on his back with his legs straight up in the air. Winn Dixie is my pride and joy and makes anyone who meets him fall in love!
I have a 6 month old pup named Rogue....fittingly named. She digs up the garden, but, obedience training is going well, struggling to stop her from jumping on people and walk good on the lead though...
LH Grunge I would recommend going to a dog training facility close to your location, they are professional trainers and can help you eith that instantly! Also, when owning a BC you have to show that YOU are the boss, and when commanding things as "follow" or "sit" etc. Rouge has to do it and not be thinking "If I dont do it there will be no consequences anyway".
LH Grunge I also have a 5 month old border collie pup. She used to dig a lot but if you put their poop on top of favourite digging spots it discourages them. Nala has nearly stopped entirely since I started doing that :) Hipe it helps!

A border collie is so much easier to deal with and train when you KNOW you have a border collie. My Leo is a rescue and they said he was a lab mix. Ha! Hahaha! No. Not even close. But all the "bad behavior" was easily fixed when I figured out what motivated him.

This video is dead accurate , our family presently owns our third border , he's 9 years old and still active , although obviously slowing down a bit , 2 hours free running per day , but does need mental stimulation also . True as well is the fact that they need their own private corner to rest , they can be nervous at times ,if they don't always obey you don't think they're stupid , they will just do what they want to do , if they can get away with it.

We have a wonderfully loving and affectionate bc/Aussie Shepherd cross named Scarlett (on the right of my thumbnail). We inherited her from a family member when she was two (now four) and were therefore not able to train her as a pup, though I did take her for walks every time I saw her. She responds very well on and off leash, and takes hand directions (right/left) brilliantly. She barks only a few times when someone's at the door, and stops as soon as she knows the person at the door is welcomed. I make sure she (and I) get plenty of daily exercise whatever the weather (and I live just north-west of Toronto). She loves the snow and hates the heat, and can spot a cotton-tail on a moonless night at fifty metres. Which is funny, because she's also walked right past ones I've seen in broad daylight! Chasing squirrels is a passion, too, though I don't let her catch anything. Properly trained, she'd make a great hunting dog, as she's a natural pointer. But I'm long past those days. I prefer cuddling up with her after a long walk, or letting her think she's a lap dog. She's wonderful with our grandson, and most other dogs, but will get aggressive with certain others irrespective of size or breed. So she's an alpha all right, but she knows who the big dog is. The guy with the barbeque and lemon cookies...
They can and will open any door in your house , remove any shoelaces from your shoes/trainers
And also pick up other dogs bad habbits (my daughters asbo cocker introduced our collie to the joys of digging holes)

Actually, if you don't have any sheep's or cows to herd, your BC will instinctively find something to herd as my Tess Siobhan and Gypsy Rose Lee taught me. Tess's son and his girlfriend Little Bo Peep also liked to herd little animals, kids on bicycles if skateboards, geese, chipmunks, and my brother riding his lawn mower.
My main option for my future service dog is a Border Collie. I'll be so happy if my dog is one!
I own a border collie it is 13 weeks,my mum heard some place in rotchdale a farm we're selling puppies my mum stuck around a bit to see the mother and the farther they were gorgeous,the farmer got hold of the pup by the scruff of the neck and just threw the dog across the farm I were disgraced thank heavens we willingly saved him!!
Good on you, i have a border collie about 1 and half year now. take care and spend time train it well, when after 1 year and 3 months it will reach fully grown size, it will be a gorgeous dag and nice friend.
I adore Border Collies,they are loyal ,highly intelligent ,and make brilliant "pets! in the right environment.I had 2 in the past.mother and son,both amazing family dogs,both died of old age and all that came with that,broke my heart.I'm almost 66 now and have my third BC,he will be a year old in August,off working stock,again highly intelligent,absolutely adore him.He was hard work to begin with,but to be honest I think that comes from the intelligence of the breed,theyre thinkers ,always one step ahead and capable of so much that they keep us on our toes lol But ,they're the most amazing and loyal dogs,need loads of exercise,and will be your friend for life x

If you've ever seen the Australian Kelpies you'll see a working dog. They wont stop till they drop from exhaustion if you don't stop them. Incidentally I have a Border Collie with a touch of Australian Blue Cattle in him and although he loves going for walks he isn't really all that active and is quite content to just lie around. He does love the beach and I take there almost every day unless I have to go away fire fighting. I also take him into the Outback camping which he loves.

I got my border collie 5 years ago and love him. He's great at flyball and I can walk him off the leash. He listens better than my 11 yearold border mixed golden lol. I can call himm back when he decides to chase a rabbit not the other dog. She's a great dog too. I would consider getting another border.

I live in Cumbria by the border and my familys breed go back 100 years there one of the most interesting dogs because if there's something thay want there not easy stopped

My BC Ned passed away 4 years ago and was the best BC I ever had. He hated the postman, but that was his only fault. Ned was my dog before anybody else. We now have Loki and he's just the same, including the postman problem, except that he is Her Ladyship's dog. It's frustrating to be the second choice "owner" in the house and there's nothing that can do about that.

Me and my 7-month collie named Yolo live in one of the busiest cities in China, the city of Chengdu. Her obedience training has been very well but her chasing e-bikes are giving me some headache. E-bikes are like motorbikes but slower, smaller and work with battery, very usually seen in China. I know she's full of energy and naturally likes to herd, so I try to take her for a run to drain her energy then we walk and I could train her more. But the problem is the city is so busy with the population of 157.28 million, and approximately 5 million e-bikes using everyday. By waiting a traffic light there'd be 30 e-bikes passing already in probably 30 seconds, right in front of her face. I know basic training skills of restraining and stoping dog chasing cars, but it can't help me here cuz the challenge is to intensive. Before we could walk to somewhere to run, she got too excited and tense, and I got tired already. I just don't know if she'll calm down a little when she's older, cuz I'm very sporty and would love to take her with me.

Recently rescued my BC, Belle from a puppy mill where she was used for breeding for 4 years of her life. She has bonded very quickly with me, but is very unsure of other humans/dogs. It took me 2 weeks just to let me touch her back. But with much patience and dedication, now she knows sit, down, come, and will do ANYTHING to catch a frisbee. She also is getting along very well with my German Shepherd rescue, Loki (I’ve had him longer than Belle, but he also came from an abusive situation). However, new dogs and humans are still very scary to her. Any tips or thoughts since she missed that crucial socialization stage?
I have a colleague who has a BC. She is so energetic and has to come and touch all of us one by one.
But my other friend has another BC. and she is so gentle, respectful and gentle one.

My family recently got a 4-month-old border collie puppy from our uncle, who is going through a rough divorce and doesn't have time for the puppy he recently got.
The puppy's name is Hope. He came into our home on short notice, and he is completely untrained. We are working on training him right now, and he is most reactive to me and my father. My mother is annoyed and wants to get rid of him. We also have two other dogs, two mini schnauzers (4 & 2) years old who are grouchy and not very well trained so My dad and I took this puppy as an opportunity to improve our current dogs' behaviors as well as the puppy's. Do you have any tips for us? Hope will need to learn quickly (which he is- in fact, good at) in order for us to keep him in our home. I would be disappointed to see him put up for adoption with all of the work I have put into him.
They're beautiful and smart, but never forget they are dogs. My new BC chased/herded farmyard pets, and a rescue puppy we had decided to also chase (never had before), then harmed the farm pets. Nonstop stress. It escalated, and the killer puppy had to go. The BC chews cords (usually expensive and attached to computers or lamps), shoes, furniture, and constantly in the garbage. She is aggressive to a gentle 14 year old Yorkie. She was miserable to house-train. And many will chase cars. They are not a good fit for older people who want a laid-back dog to cuddle with. They are also a tripping hazard because they are quick and quiet. It really isn't fair to this breed to wind up with a non-athlete or sedentary lifestyle, and I regret taking her in. If you are young and energetic, you can work with one. And you have to. I hope you do well with your new arrival, and understand that they can have a lot of issues, just like any dog, and require a LOT of time. Good luck.

I have two bc puppys (5 months & 3m) mine learn very quickly. The little girl(3m) does not want to listen as much and is very stubborn. They will also get very distructibe and chew up everthing if they get bored, so exercise them regularly. They also need to have their mind challenged. I would try obidence of agility. They are a very high energy dog. Once they are trained they are really good dogs. They are also really smart so yours should be easy to train. Good luck

I know from experience it is hard to get another dog when you have said goodbye but just remember the new dog doesn't take the place of the old dog, your heart just makes room for the new dog as many times as needed. I have four dogs in my heart now

He used future tense, "I'll be getting," not present tense, and then he said "he has a way to go" after saying he's 10 days old. There's no typo there, clearly Tanz has reserved a puppy that he has not assumed ownership of yet.

I am thinking of adopting it but the problem is I am a first time owner and I live in an apartment(Though it is quite big). AND I am not really the athletic type just average. I have 2. My female is crazy. High energy to the point of acting feral. My male is sweet but very ill with grand mal seizures with meds. They are both very spoiled and get to run miles daily. I adore them. They are not for lazy people.

He is a blue merle border collie. Not a tri Tri colour means three colours.Tri means three The blue Gray and White is called blue merle. You also get red merle brown merle.
I have a 4 yr old border collie. We have a great relationship and he listens very well but has a bad habit of chasing after and picking up rocks with his teeth and also pulling up grass. He will do this during walks when he gets anxious or excited (can be good excited or bad excited). We live in the mountains so there are a lot of loose rocks around. I have tried distracting him (works for a moment until the next time he does it). It is damaging his teeth and it's hard to have him off leash for fear of this happening. Any ideas?
