Drop both of your E strings to D, and then drop your A to G. Only take off the low E if you wish to keep it tuned to open G. It’s shaped like an A chord but tuned down a whole step.
This is essentially a beginner guitarists way of learning open G tuning.. don't lose the 6th string, it's an amateur move for blues players, there's so much you can add with a low D

Rock n Roll is documentary that shows Keith's talent, passion and reverence for the roots of Rock when he steps in as music director for a floundering Chuck Berry.
I would dare say his technical chops are up there with Hendrix and his rhythm playing, to me, is more interesting than Clapton by far. Once Clapton went solo, boring. I have seen documentaries of Keef and his blues playing away from the Stones is very interesting to my ears.

According to his book "Life", he learned the open g tuning from Don Everly when he couldnt figure out the opening riff from "bye bye love", im sure he learned a lot from Ry, he is a swampy bluesman for sure
I tried his tuning to learn a few stones songs. I’m not an expert but I almost felt like he’s been conning people into thinking that he’s a guitarist. Just about everything he’s done is built around the same shape. Granted, nobody else thought of it and it’s easy to say but it’s also very easy to play.

When I was in middle school (mid 80’s), went over my grandparents house with my Dad one afternoon. They were getting ready to do a yard sale, and asked him to look through a stack of vinyls to grab what he’d left behind after getting married. We brought back about ten records, and two were essential: Are You Experienced?, by Hendrix & Get Your Ya Ya’s Out, by The Rolling Stones. One rainy day soon after getting those, my sister & I worked on a 1000pc puzzle while listening to records. Ya-Ya’s was so good that we listened to it two times in a row, and it became a favorite of mine. I like the Stones, but more of a casual fan. Even so, that album is still one of my all time favorites. Haven’t listened to it in a while, but am about to do so because of your comments about it. Thanks!🙂🎸

Also, my Dad saw Hendrix @ Merriweather Post Pavilion, in 1968. I found a recording (bootleg) of that show several years ago, as it was on a bit torrent server called The Traders Den. Wasn’t a great sounding recording, but it’s decent enough to listen to it. I burned the files on to a CD, and gave it to him as a Christmas gift that year. He was definitely a bit confused by it at first, since it only had the date written on the CD. I put it in a clear CD case, with nothing else on it. After he figured out what it was, he asked me, “Where did you find this?” I simply told him, “I know people.” 😀🎸

It’s kinda like what staind did but ditch the highest string. Add a lower Ab string for the octave. And then drop the Eb string to make drop C#. Endless possibilities and new sounds. Highly recommend staind a guitar work by Mike mushok for those experimenting with new tunings. He has over 20 tunings unique to only him
Once, I broke my low E. As I was tuning it up and plucking it mindlessly I got to an A, the A way below the E. I stopped. Played for a while. The sound was rich and full. I now had every note of a bass guitar except for the first four. Thirty years later, I still keep it tuned that way: AADGBE .
That tuning is badass and has actually been used. Check out Them crooked vultures, songs like No one loves me and Warsaw use that tuning and sounds amazing

I’ve never understood this. I use open g a lot. I’ve never found the 6th (bottom) string to be in the way. Quite the opposite. It can make certain chords much fuller.

But looking back, Keith Richards is not a virtuoso in that same way. But he's been the part of the iconic team that has chronicled 6 decades. Its not that he plays rock and roll.. He is rock and roll at its very core.. he's not showing off.. he's having fun...
That trick releases a lot of tension on the neck/truss so the remaining 3 strings that were not detuned will go out of tune. He didn't retune so hes out of tune. You can easily hear it. I know that's not a big thing but it is important to mention it when you show people how to retuned to open an tuning, ESPECIALLY his way with the removal of the 6th string. That string put the most tension on the neck of ALL the strings.
Watch Keith Richard's expression when he starts play in open G. He becomes 16 again.

I found that playing the piano was simpler after I removed all the black keys and retuned to a g chord no matter what keys I hit
