I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs,
On this installment of Revelations, Just in time for Valentines Day, we speak to rock and roll hall of famer Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and two of the songwriters behind the #1 1987 duet I’ve Had the Time of my Life. John DeNicola and Franke Previte the frontman of early 80s group Frankie and the Knockouts who had a Knockout top 10 hit in 1981 with Sweetheart.
I’ve had the Time of My life is of course the main song from the 1987 blockbuster hit Dirty Dancing starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. the Duet was sung by Bill Medley and the elegant Jennifer Warnes who of course had another number one movie hit with the late Joe Cocker “Up Where We Belong” from an office and a gentlemen. This is such a compelling story of how this song came to be, you’re going to love it.
As we go into this session I wasn’t to thank our sponsor Zennie Eyewear my personal choice. Go design your own and get digital blue light protection. Treat yourself today at Zenni.com Here is the story of duet I’ve Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing

I sat on the sidelines back in the day as music led movies like Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Flashdance, Top Gun, Purple Rain, etc were big in the theatres. I spent what money I had buying tapes and roller skating... not much left for the movie theatre. I've never seen any of those films in their entirety... just clips and pieces here and there. But the POR just keeps bringing them up... inciteful interviews, behind the scenes info, well produced videos and now I can't believe what I'm thinking... I'm going to set aside a night to watch Dirty Dancing. 😜

My biggest memory of this song was in 1995. I was 23, hanging out with a few of my friends. I was the only one with a driver's license (the other 3 were younger) and I would drive them around listening to music. I had the cassette single, and we played it a lot. The guys (one guy & me) had to sing the guy parts & the girls (two of them as well) had to sing the girl parts. I still remember Brian & I singing really loud before the last chorus, "AND I OWE IT ALL TO YOU..." LOL!

Then got it on DVD, then Blue ray and now also have the Blue ray special addition. Whenever I channel surf and it is showing on a channel, I have to watch it. Yup, Professor, I'm among the ranks who rate this my favourite movie of all time (and I have one eclectic top ten). Baby's emotional transparency, perfectly portrayed by Jennifer Grey, made it okay for all of us to be who we were. Awkward, slightly naïve, determined to learn, growing and falling in love. This movie was for all of us, a generation that summed up all of those feels in one vulnerable expression.....'I carried a WATERMELON?!' Thank you so much for this!

Im late commenting, since this was put out 3 years ago, but this song and Dirty Dancing was the highlight of my childhood. When Dirty Dancing came out in Theaters, me and my sister would watch it 2-3 times a day, in the theater, then she would make me practice the dances with her at home, and she always made me the boy 😂😂😂 and because i am the little sister, I obliged. We saw it every single weekend, multiple times until it went out of theaters. And every single time I watched it felt like the first time. I wanted to dance like Baby so bad. I've since passed it down to my kids and my nieces and nephews. Once they have children, ill be passing this classic down to the next generation. I love every single thing about the movie and the soundtrack...and now, i must go watch it again ❤❤❤ Thank you for this wonderful interview and walk down memory lane Professor!!

Time of my Life is like a favorite book that becomes an old friend. You can't listen to it and feel bad. As someone with a baritone voice it is hard to find songs you are comfortable with singing. Thankfully I have Bill Medley. The record producer changing things to match his voice is tremendous as most say go try something else. Phil Specter when he was at his genius in 1964 did it for Bill in You've Lost that Loving Feeling paved the way to make something different.

The first time I heard about "Dirty Dancing" was in 1985 (I know crazy that was two years before it was released). It was my senior year of high school and I was dating a German exchange student who was really into competitive ballroom dancing back home. She excitedly told me about a movie about ballroom dancing. I remember seeing the movie is 1987, long after we had separated and thinking so this is what she was talking about! The music in that final scene is totally uplifting.

Weird is that a movie set in the early 60s so epitomizes the music and film of the 80s.

This is a tremendously well done interview because of:
    1. The INTERVIEWER
    2. The 2 gifted song writers
    3. The above all meshed perfectly together due to the combined personalities of the above IMHO. The sum equalling what I write here in "3".
All are relaxed, responding with brutally honest answers along with the heartfelt humility coming forth completely and sounding so humble and sincere.
I listened 3 times because of what the Songwriter shown on the "bottom left" of my digital cell phone said beginning around the 7:40 Mark. He made an amazing admission and gave thanks to our Savior - you could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice as he then continued to describe the entire process involved in the composition of this MASTERPIECE of MUSIC. What a beautiful honor to have the courage to admit to such a mystical, Spiritually derived thought process that must of, or rather, DID Divinely write "song #150".
His story of the beginning process occurring on The New Jersey Turnpike along with his "co-composer explaining the "different CHORD applications and combinations" as well as informing the audience about "Modulations between different "KEYS" are subjects very seldom addressed by most professional Musicians.
And yet, to become a Master in the Art of incorporating melodic, subtle changes by using MODULATION can, in and of itself, take a lifetime of studying this most important part of all the different nuances and incorporated aspects of Music Theory. (I, myself, have relentlessly studied this fascinating subject since I was 7. To discover it's secrets opens up an astonishing amount of musical combinations of melodic progressions when composing! Thanks Ma & Pa for forcing me into Piano lessons the day after I turned 5. (lol).
Nice work Professor and, if possible, please thank this songwriting team know that I appreciate THEIR humble nature and TRUTH bearing ways of motivating additional Musicians with their concise explanations of the "Songwriting Process.
    Sincerely, François H.

I went to see Dirty Dancing 13 times in the theater. I know that sounds crazy and it probably was but my friends and I could not get enough of it. We had memorized the dialog and did recite the entire movie. I've seen it many times since then, I never get tired of it. This movie and the soundtrack were such a big part of my childhood. Loved it then, love it now. That lift, the lift is everything. I get teary eyed every time! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ♥️

Jennifer grey was my crush as a youngster.. just from dirty dancing. My mom always talked about her having surgery after the movie to change her nose, and my blood pressure would rise.. I couldn't bear the thought of her changing her look, she was perfect as she was..... once I got old enough, I looked her pic up and couldn't believe the difference.. she just wasn't the same.. 😟

Ann Wilson and Mike Reno. Almost Paradise. That would be a good duet to tell the story about. And "I've Had The Time Of My Life" is a personal favorite among my list of megastar duets. Lionel and Diana. Kenny and Dolly. Tim and Faith. Barbara and Donna. Mike and Celine. Paul and Michael. Paul and Stevie. You might recognize the hit songs that came from these pairings. Some quite iconic.

I remember seeing the movie with some friends and fell in love with it all from the movie, to Patrick Swayze, and the soundtrack. After the movie, we went to a record store and I bought the 45 of "She's Like the Wind; then the soundtrack. It's great from the first song to the last and it's one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.

Everything these two said about the creative process, the labor and love absolutely come through when looking at the big picture of this songs impact. I was a nine year old boy watching this movie over and over. Warped indeed, but it brings a tear to my eye thinking about the late Patrick and how Jennifer kind of drifted off. I really appreciate this episode for all the details you guys filled in. Amazing how many hurdles had to be overcome. Thank you for this gem!

After watching this video about how this song came to be I have to give my pov.
I grew up in the 60’s, i listened to my older sister’s music from the 50’s ie: the Chiffon’s, Shirelles, etc. My older brother loved Motown, the Righteous Brothers, James Brown and the Temptations, who was the first group I ever saw in concert.
I’ve always loved Bill Medley’s voice, all us girls did.
So for me, this song brings back a lot of nostalgia but also, I have to agree while watching this video, when one of the guys said they thought that Patrick Swayze was part of the pull I have to agree. Patrick was such a nice guy, you never heard any nasty gossip about him, and he was so talented. Plus, the way Patrick died so young, far before his time is so sad.
When Patrick was mentioned I started crying, my husband died of the same nasty cancer.
This song touches my heart in so many ways.

I have watched this movie soooo many times. I had the cassette of the soundtrack. It was my sophomore year in high school when the movie/soundtrack came out. I was in this high school gymnastic/dance group - we did our own version of Johnny and Baby dance with the song I had the time of my life with the lift and all! Every time I hear that song it transports me back to Spring 1988 and that routine. Great video as usual.

One of the great songs that makes it impossible to not feel sheer joy when listening to it. But it causes you to want to move to not be sedate when it is played.
It is one song that just cannot be interpreted by any other pair but Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. I find it ironic that a lot of great songs especially the lyrics seem to be channeled from a Divine Source through human hands.
