      Trying to remember.... lack of income for a long time has prevented super dumb big purchases. That said, for Lent I'm doing a big 4 batches of 40 items declutter and found not 1 or 2 post-foot surgery sandals... but SIX. Yes, I have had a lot of foot surgeries, but pretty sure I"m never going to grow 4 more feet! lol

      Strawberry corer…. Well, technically it was a gift from someone but still…. It only cores strawberries…. 🥸 and since it was a gift… I kept it through 4 moves, at least. *face palm*. Also, Halloween costumes for adults! I’ve sewn/created many for cosplay but really single use bc there’s always another costume to make! Lol.

    Ours was an apple cutter, bought with the intention that my children could independently cut apples into slices in one easy move. Not only was it actually incredible difficult to push through the apple but you got the added bonus of a face full of apple juice spray at the same time!

      @@justine.c Me too! Plus it makes a lot of slices and I discovered that if I gave my daughter 4 large pieces of apple in her lunch she would eat them, but if I gave her the 8 or so small ones the slicer made, she would get “too full” and leave them behind. I really love your videos. I realized I had too many things and I wasn’t even using half of it. I started decluttering at the end of last year. I still have a long way to go, and it wasn’t easy to start. I don’t want to just get rid of everything: I want to donate, recycle and maybe sell some things.
    I cannot explain how good it feels to give things you do not need to someone who needs them. My dad died last year, and my mom made us all the daughters chose things to keep if we wanted to, and chose things to give to people we knew needed them. We even gifted my dads (very expensive) medication to some patients I had in the public hospital I work in.
    It doesn’t feel like I’ve lost his stuff, it feels like his belongings have purpose again ❤️

    "Keeping too many things for the future can stop you from being fully present in the now.'' I have definitely experienced this... whether it is too many activities keeping me from experiencing any of them with the freedom I once did, or too many items keeping my family from really being able to live in our space or have people over. Decluttering has been such a great exercise in staying mindful of the most important things in life. 🥰

    Thank you so much for being so honest. You are the only minimalist decluttering channel or person that has talked about having their parents clothing and pieces of jewelry items like that that you had difficulty getting rid of and that you have a memory box with really special things in them. This has helped me so much I'm at that point where I need to get rid of so many of my parents going down size and moved and be decluttered! Just trying to decide which pieces I want to keep and I want to do something like a little frame memorial box for each parent or something that I can frame and hang on the wall. And possibly make a pillow out of some of the clothing. I don't know I'm trying to figure it out but it's nice to hear that other people have emotional attachments you are the only one who talks about that and I appreciate that so much! Love your channel!

      Tip: Thinly slice the cloves, and then sprinkle a little coarse salt on top before cutting the garlic in the other direction, being sure to use a rocking motion with the knife tip always staying on the board.

You then pushed the egg down and the wire started whirring around inside the shell, so when you broke the shell it was perfectly scrambled. A space hogging item that a bowl and fork could do easily. I had a difficult time letting go of my son's toys. I found reason to keep way more than I should. Then I involved him and told him to make a pile of what he wanted to keep and another pile to let go of. I expected him not to let go of much. It ended up being that his donate pile was way more than the pile to keep. I found myself asking, "Don't you want to keep this, or this?" He had no issue deciding, but I always find emotional attachment to the memories of him playing with them.

    Asking "Does the current me love this item?" has given me a bit of a conundrum on items I'd already decided to get rid of. For example my husband gave me an antique hand mirror one year as a present with a beautiful carved wooden frame. I don't use hand mirrors - I use a modern, more practical mirror. So it's an item that sits on a surface and needs dusting. Likewise the antique crystal perfume bottle he got me another year. I don't use perfume and if I did, it would come in it's own bottle. So that sits on a surface. If I ask other minimalist questions such as "What purpose does this serve?", "What problem is this solving?" I come up with negative answers and they seem easy to dispose of, but if I ask if the 'current me' "loves" these items, I say yes, because they're both so beautiful, the artistry is incredible. But they're just sitting on surfaces, unused and gathering dust (and there are loads more such antique gifts - for example a set of 1930's cocktail glasses, when we're a non-drinking household - that are packing out a display cabinet and are never handled or even looked at). Yet if I look at them I couldn't fail to say I love them because of the artistry involved. So now I feel conflicted, when I had clarity before. Help!

    • @AtoZenLife
      @AtoZenLife  2 роки тому +5

      It’s OK to keep decorative items that you enjoy looking at, as long as your truly love and enjoy them! In my office I have an antique head vase and wood jewelry box from my grandparents, as well as my grandmother’s empty perfume bottle. I don’t use perfume myself, so it just sits empty, but I enjoy seeing it sitting there as I used to enjoy seeing it sit on her dresser and watching her pick it up to put it on herself all fancy-like! 🌸
      I would focus on keeping and prioritizing the items that really give you that THIS IS AMAZING feeling in your gut. I usually tell my followers if they have to ask themselves if they love it, they probably don’t. ☺️
      And maybe find something other than antiques for future gifts if you like? Hugs! 🤗

    • @inspiredby624
      @inspiredby624 2 роки тому +5

      I'd argue that if looking at those items brings you joy they do indeed serve a purpose in your life. Maybe you could find a way to hang the hand mirror on the wall so it becomes a more purposeful decor item. And you could start using the cocktail glasses for non-alcoholic drinks :)

    • @Instransigent
      @Instransigent 2 роки тому +5

      @@inspiredby624 Hi there. Thank you for your reply. I can see from what you say (and from Marissa above) that I was so intent on clearing objects, that I hadn't thought ahead to consider intentional display items. These things would indeed look stunning if they were the only object in a clear space, when the eye would be drawn only to them (at the moment they're crowded amongst other things), much as art might be displayed in a gallery with no other distractions around. Thank you for introducing that train of thought to me. I was so focussed on asking whether every object I was handling served a practical purpose that I hadn't considered ultimately using them decoratively. Thank you. 😊 And yes, we should actually use the art deco cocktail glasses rather than simply have them lost in a display cabinet.

      That’s not her only instruction though, to be fair. She speaks of many other categories like practical needs and “duty” items and administrative items. She also addresses this by saying that you become more in tune with your joy meter the more you strengthen your decluttering muscles, which I have absolutely found to be true. Sometimes it comes down to the “most joy” if you have many of a type of item (like Memorials or trinkets). So I am not really sure what else people are really adding to the convo except maybe wording it in a way that sparks better for different people. Obviously I love this channel too, so much, but Konmarie method is not really as simple as just “do you like it”.

    The extra storage thing is tricky for us. We pay a small amount extra (less than 5%) on our rent to have an additional (about 2.5m²) store room. We could fit the items in there in our apartment, but to us it's worth it so they're not cluttering up our space. I have items like PA and lighting gear and a drum kit that are valuable but rarely used right now (although we know they will be again in the future), plus a couple of items that came with the apartment (so can't be thrown away) but we don't personally need in there. For the convenience (it's 4m from our apartment door), it's worth it.

    Great video!!! Thank you for sharing. I'm not a gadget person. My youngest son (the ta moko/tattoo artist) occasionally suggests (hints) about getting a airfryer, I always say, " son I can do the same by baking on a rack in the oven". He knows I like clear spaces but I think he enjoys teasing me for a reaction. We didn't even have a clothes dryer or microwave until the middle and end of last year. He got the microwave which sits on top of the fridge where I can't reach, no loss for me and we got a clothes dryer to help keep on top of his heavy work clothes. Which we have only needed to use a few times.
    Have a great week!!! 🌺🌺🌺

      Stick to your guns on the air fryer. I recieved one as a gift and my assessment so far is that its only good for store bought frozen French fries and corn dogs, which we don't often buy and eat anyway. I think the idea behind the gift was that anything we want to deep fat fry we would instead use the air fryer for, but it doesn't work that way. An air fryer is more like a small convection oven, so anything you can do in the oven you would do in the air fryer (presumably faster because it's smaller). I'd say the air fryer might be great if I were living in a college dorm again and didn't want to use a microwave.

    I'm keeping my garlic press, apple slicer, and cherry pitter. And the onigiri press which I do use for a fun round of onigiri every couple of months. I've lived without all of them, and they really do make my life a LOT better. Pitting 4 quarts of cherries with a funnel and paper clip was not fun.
    I've tossed a lot of single use gadgets though - I definitely didn't need 3 different sizes of avocado scoops when I could just use a spoon.

    • @username00009
      @username00009 2 роки тому +1

      Have you watched videos on how to shape onigiri? It’s actually pretty easy if you find the right one - I think I learned from an OLD EmmyMade video back when she was in Japan.
      I am keeping my apple slicer and cherry pitter too because they make such quick work, but I ditched the garlic press a few years ago. A little coarse salt makes the mincing go quickly; the worst part is peeling when cloves have been insanely small the past year or so, but I’m now buying fresh peeled garlic from Sam’s Club. With decent sized cloves, peeling is fast when you just smash them with the side of a large knife.

    Love this list! And also your caring heart ❤️
    I have a special gratitude for Marie Kondo because her book contained the first concepts that brought important problems to my attention such as, organizing is for hoarding, not for tidying; and also the tip to store like items all in one place rather than many places throughout the home. Through this sort of logic and wisdom she spoke to the stress I felt about my "stuff" and brought articulation to what had been burdening me for a long time. I _did_ ultimately get too overwhelmed by trying to tackle my clutter in the broad categories more all at once and did not ultimately make huge progress until following the onion method. But that said, though I agree that "does this spark joy?" can be far too simple a question, I think for that first layer especially, it draws attention to the number of items we keep that bring us negative feelings of guilt or sad memories, and for me, personally, that started me off on the right foot 🥰

    My upright piano is my most cherished item. Sadly, it is a big and heavy thing that is a beast to move even to another wall. 💕 The most waste of an item I have got is my mom's vintage waffle maker from the 1950s. It makes great waffles but I always just buy remade ones to put in a toaster. Luckily, that takes up little space in a cabinet in the kitchen.

    I will say, though, the most disappointing items I've personally purchased have been a scarf-holder (the one from Ikea) that I have since donated and one of those multi-tiered pants hangers. I tried so many times to make them work for other purposes and they just do not serve any purpose! Actually, ok, the pants hanger does somewhat work for my extra long necklaces...but I'm down to only four and the number has been dwindling -- I've gotten to the point where I'm quite excited to finally let it go, lol

    Watch out with the last question. Do not turn it into « could someone else love this more than me? ». Maybe, but if you’re turning the question into this one, it’s probably because it’s an item you used to like a lot. So most likely, someone who gets it won’t have that special connection and won’t love it more than you did.

    I’m late to this video, but a garlic press, or rather a cheap garlic press. This thing was awful. I hate chopping food. Well, I hate cooking period, so I thought, aha, this thing will make it better. Big old nope. All it did was make a big mess with the garlic. Juice was everywhere and the peeling would still be attached to all the little pieces. I just had to accept that I would have to continue to do the garlic manually or just by the already cut up stuff, which really does not taste as good. 😅

And it’s a container, so it can contribute to container baby syndrome, so I used them each sparingly, then ended up selling them on Facebook. 🤷🏼‍♀️ my current youngest (next one due in just 10 weeks!) literally cried every time I put her in the bouncer!
