  • In honor of the late thumb-picking guitarist Thom Bresh, who died on May 23rd, 2022, I am reuploading an interview I did with him back in the early 2000's. We were lucky to catch up with him when he did a concert in the Central Valley of California. As the son of Merle Travis, Thom shared story after story about his life and his development as an amazing guitar player and performer. He had a long career in country music and was liked by everyone that he met. He was one of the funniest guys that I have ever had a chance to interview. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
Also, I have hundreds of other lessons for guitar players who like Jazz, Blues, Bebop, and Fingerstyle guitar arrangements. There are also a lot of lessons on guitar technique and guitar scales along with exercises meant to build your chops. Check them all out here: guitarcollegel...

Originally from the L.A. area, Rich has been playing professionally and teaching guitar for over thirty years. His education includes years of college and private instruction with a variety of teachers including Mitch Holder, Ted Greene, Joe Pass, and Charlie Shoemake to name a few. He feels education is a continuing process, there's always more to learn. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, Ted Greene, and Larry Carleton have all influenced his playing.
Rich wrote three books for a major publisher Dale Zdenek/ Belwin Mills/Columbia providing him the opportunity to work with other great artists/authors like Tommy Tedesco, Joe Diorio, and Ted Greene. After teaching at GIT/Musicians Institute, in Hollywood, CA, for three years he developed and published his own home study guitar school type curriculum available on his website www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com which has helped over ten thousand students improve their playing.
Rich has won honorable mentions and awards in songwriting and served as president of the Ventura County Producers and Songwriters Guild. Touring for three years with "Dick Clark's Good Old Rock and Roll Show" he had the opportunity to perform with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Anthony, and many other great, old-time rock and rollers.
After moving his family to the Yosemite/Fresno area he taught guitar and directed the jazz band at Fresno Pacific University for two years. Being a well-rounded player, Rich is comfortable playing a variety of styles including jazz (his favorite), blues, rock, fusion, country, and solo fingerstyle. He performs at local venues in a number of different scenarios; as a solo guitarist, with his jazz trio or quartet or smooth jazz quintet. At home in his studio, he is continually producing new lessons for UA-cam and www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com.
The years of experience and knowledge he can share with you will
help you be the player you always dreamed you'd be.

Thom Bresh was the best entertainer I ever saw. He was witty, funny, a great singer, and man could he pick a guitar. We will all miss Thom, and be forever grateful that we got to be in the presence of Thom. Thank you for the nice interview. Eddie P.

Eddie, you’re exactly right. But I’ve got to say that you’re one of the best thumb Pickers to ever play the guitar yourself. After all, you were inducted into the Thumb Pickers Hall of Fame in Muhlenberg County Kentucky!! Next year I’m hoping to be able to attend the Merle Travis Theater for the national Thumb pickers Convention and Hall of Fame weekend in late September 2023 at the Travis Center!!

You demonstrated what a classy man you are by attending Thom's funeral and burial, Eddie. That is the sign of a true friend.

He was also a half decent impressionist.

He didn’t think he was as good as everyone else knew he was, I think because he couldn’t extemporize as fast and varied as Chet or Jerry. I told him he was, in CAAS19. In a hall.

Thanks Eddie. As a picker, your tribute to a great man carries enormous weight. Thom was a friend to everyone who loves picking, even if they never met him.

I went to the Gamble Rogers Festival in St. Augustine, Fl in the late 90's. Thom was playing there and walked around the festival talking to people, I was so impressed with him, I went home, threw away my flatpick and have been thumbpicking ever since!

That’s insane how he instinctively knew how to do the independent thumb since it’s bloody hard

I admired Thom after seeing him in concert. I later found out he was Travis son. As a fingerstyle player myself I followed Travis and Atkins and anyone who plays fingerstyle. Great interview for a super talented man. Thanks Rich.

The idea that thumb picking originated in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, let alone anywhere in Kentucky is so white of you. Finger style also originated in the black cotton picking south a hundred years before Merle Travis. Otherwise your video was great. I met Thom. He was a kind man. I finger pick pretty well for a suburban businessman but am awe-struck when I meet these people. Thom had the best groove of all the white players. It was in the strength and persistence of his thumb.
