Thanks, Grant, I just ordered Campaign of Nations, and then saw this review. Love the color pallet and "victory" conditions. This review made me interested in the game. Thanks of the review.
Shackleton a tough, but fair man. He had no airs, & graces like Scott. We still have arguments who was the best. A thought provoking game. Have you tried pemcan, you should try it when play the game.
Great, thoughtful review. It's fascinating game design concept - the point being to show how rare the actual outcome was. Will definitely pick this up in the future!
Exactly. I think that other games can take a lesson from this approach. We tend to believe that certain results, typically those that were historical, to be the true measure of the event but this was a miracle in many ways.
Very good detailed review. It convinced me to watch your play through when I get the chance, I could tell you really liked it. I got the sense you have not read the book "Endurance" which is one of the great survival stories of the Antarctic (or anywhere else!). Highly recommend you do that. I will always remember the cat because (spoiler alert), one of the crew shot a guy's pet cat (musta been for food, can't recall) and created undying enmity between the two. It's the kind of game I wouldn't normally buy but I'd definitely like to give it a try. Grant, you are truly a unique reviewer with your in-depth analysis . Very high quality and it's easy to see your enthusiasm for what you do. Congrats on the good work. I don't see how you guys have time to make a living at your day jobs. Wish I lived closer so I could participate in a "basement con" . Perhaps I will get a chance to meet y'all in person one day. Gotta pick out a con to go to as I have never been. Are you going to Buckeye Game Fest? What will you and Alex be participating in, if so? Outside chance I may take a flyer and go. Would love to take the opportunity of sitting down with you and A at the table. Cheers.
We’ll be at Buckeye Game Fest this year, yes! We have a few events we’re running as well as some casual gaming. If you do go, ensure you get the War Room badge, which is where we set up and spend the whole convention.
Have you ever played the game "Greenland"? Its a card game designed by Phil Eklund. This review reminded me of it due to the setting (the games themselves are not alike in any other way). It's about the 400 year struggle of the Norse settlers to make a go of it in Greenland. The colony eventually died out for reasons that are not completely understood. I've read several books on the history and it is a very intriguing mystery. I encourage you to look into the game when you get a chance. It's a card game and the kind of game I sense you would enjoy. (Not a war game). Cheers to you and your intrepid sidekick!
I bought this game a few months ago based on your recommendation and you're right, it can be a depressing slog of a game. Little victories are cherished, then you get to the end game challenges and ugh, to be so close then lose. Heartbreaking.
Looks fascinating. Shackleton was one of the greatest leaders of men in history.
Hollandspiele does it again.
I'm so happy you got back around to reviewing this. Been waiting for your take before I pulled the trigger.
It was really good. I really like the futility of the game in some ways and really relish the challenge.

We used the vac packed. Which more convenient.

Great review..definitely look into picking this up during one of Hollandspiele's sales

I definitely want to read a book on the subject. Any good suggestions?
@@grantkleinhenz6789 I would recommend Ranulph Fiennes book. It is also a good listen Audio book.

Is there a print and play version somewhere for purchase?
Just got this, card set up was a bit confusing in rule book, but this helped. Thanks. If you haven't read the book by Alferd Lansing.

All games with cats are 10/10 - especially survival ones
Cats probably will end up ruling the world with the cockroaches, that they will play with and bat around.
