  • Today, I test out even more sugested finishes to see which gives the best results on slate tiles.
I tested both before and after the engraving to see which results were best. I even scrubbed them with soapy water to see if that would degrade any of the finishes.

HI. After watching your original video on the 50/50 mix of yours I've used that for all my coasters, and it works great, so thanks for that. Interesting to see how other finishes work on this and the other video, and it saves me money trying them, but to be honest, I've not looked at trying anythins else as 50/50 works great!

That's great to hear. I agree that the 50/50 mix is a great mix. But without testing we will never know if there is a better solution. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos 😊

Since iv used clear lacquer iv developed lines in every engraving I do with my sculpfun and each engraving it now gets worse/more visible. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Thanks

It's a bit difficult to diagnose without seeing the results. But you can try a couple of things, try without the lacquer, and see what the results are like.
It could be that you are more focused and have a finer engraving line with this one. In which case increasing the lines per inch will solve that.
There could also be debris in your x and y tracks, making the wheels skip. Just check that the laser head can move freely with the machine completely powered off.

Even though one comment on the Amazon section gave it a 1 star, I wouldn’t, it certainly improves it more

Thanks for using my WD40 suggestion :) I’ve been experimenting today with Polar Anti-Shine Varnish Lacquer Spray afterwards. The results are phenomenal, but it does still leave a slight sheen in the dark areas even though it’s “anti-shine” but my god it makes the image come alive even more.

Hmm. Sounds expensive 🤣. Have you tried the spray before. Generally the finish is better

It isn't clear to me whether you applied the WD40 before engraving only or both before and after engraving...

I applied them all both before and after engraving. You can see the comparison at the end

I have just seen his because I was thinking of buying some boiled linseed oil to try. I mainly do photo engraving on slate. I was looking for something other than my Matt lacquer. I find it brings out the contrast in the photos. The latest one I've done is a photo of a climber on the peak of a french mountain on a piece of sate collected on one of the climbs, not sure if it was that mountain but the guy who asked me to do it collects a rock from every mountain he climbs. It's come out really well I'm just waiting to hear what if any finish he wants. He loves all my previous bits I've made him but this one had to go right first time 😂

I always keep a few spare bits to one side to test on. But I guess if it's a specific piece that's been provided it's not that easy.
I do have another video testing more popular finishes before and after but Matt lacquer and the boiled linseed/white spirits mix are the best I have found so far

@@philscraftcorner I have a few taster slates but yes this one is one of a kind. I've subscribed to you after I watched this. I just spotted the mistakes in my original comment so I've edited it. For some reason I always have issues with the keyboard when using UA-cam on my phone, it's like there is a lag and it misses bits out
