Just as a reminder: The "Puhekieli" that I''ll be teaching in this video (and future ones) is the kind used more in Southern Finland, there are of course different dialects throughout Finland and those will differ a bit! :)

Some say 'mää' and 'sää' instead of 'mä' and 'sä'. Young adults and teens also use 'meikä' and 'teikä'. In Lapland and Eastern Finland they say 'mie' and 'sie'.

I started thinking that it's kinda funny how people still refer to their pets as "hän" but usually refer to people as "se". I don't know if it's like this everywhere in Finland, but a lot of people here in Turku uses "hän" referring to their pets. I still use "hän" myself when I'm talking about someone that I really really care about but it might just be a personal thing.
I don't know why I'm even watching btw, Finnish is my first language :) But I guess it's interesting how these things are taught to people who doesn't speak Finnish.

In the Turku region people use hän for people and animals. In Helsinki people use se on both unless for example they talk inner feelings of people. "Se on syömässä" but "hän on pasifisti". Using "se" on latter would have a condescending or trivializing tone.There are more complex nuances between the choice. Sometimes "hän" can be used in a condescending way.
When I was in the school in the 70s and 80s the common view was that the written from was the only correct one and people spoke incorrectly. (IMO the idea that most people would speak their native language incorrectly is impossible as the way they speak defines the correct way)
I fond the idea of English using he/she on pets strange when I heard it so likely it is not common here. I would never say so.
I am learning the Finnish language from you, and in this video, you look adorable, really cute, and beautiful. The ending of the video is hilarious.

"Ne" is also used in kirjakieli. When talking from non-humans in 3rd person plural, you use "ne" not "he".
One thing I've noticed, at least according to how you're pronouncing it, the Finnish "t" is pronounced with the tip of the tongue touching the back of the front upper teeth, whereas the English "t" is pronounced with the tip of the tongue pressed against the hard palate. To my ears, the Finnish "t" sounds almost like "th", as in "this", but a bit more like the "t" in Castillian Spanish. Keep up the good work, by the way. You are an excellent teacher, young lady.

My understanding is that this relationship between "hän/se" is artificial in a sense that before kirjakieli was created people used mostly "se" when referring to a person. Informal language hasn't moved away from anything, it just never properly adopted the artificial rules of the formal language :)

The cases are not so scary! They're used instead of (most English) prepositions, so just think of them like that. It'll come naturally all in good time.

Olen Cecilia is the exact same thing! Since the -n in "olen" already let's people know you are talking about yourself.

Interestingly, in Hungarian ‘you’ (sing.) is ‘te’. The plural equivalent would be ‘ti’, which means ‘you’ (pl).

ok, so I am struggling with something that I cannot get the explanation of from the people here in Finland. they say we know it but how it works is a mystery as much as it is for me. it would be nice if you can make a video about "Demonstrattivipronominia käytät". all the yksikko and monikko forms like mikä, mitkä, millä, miltä.... jne. let me know if you have some blog. kiitos.

the band which inspired me to learn finnish is värttinä. but the thing is their lyrics are usually language-wise extremely difficult, so you might get scared of not understanding a single sentence. but it is finnish at it's utmost beauty, if you want to know what i mean, listen to "kaihon kantaja." and even if you don't understand, you still listen to the language which helpes to get used to sound and rhytm of it. plus you can learn some most important words of other dialects, such as "mie" and "sie" which are eastern version of "mä" and "sä"
I have never met a Finn that doesn't love Eppu Normaali.
I have no clue what music genres you like, but Indica have a lot of songs that have both a Finnish and an English version. I can't get enough of them.

Like so many other people talking about pronouns, you forgot “se” as “it” in formal, written Finnish.
When we teach English or German, third person singular is “he, she and it”, but most Finnish courses forget that “it” is a third person singular pronoun. Maybe it is because you are always so excited that there isn’t a masculine and feminine.
I wish people teaching spoken Finnish would come to and agreement. Many courses have “he” as third person plural in spoken Finnish. Maybe this is dialectical.

in my first week learning Finnish I looked for the translation of she and got hän, he, se and ne, because in German they and she is the same word. Very confusing but know I understand.

Terve, i'm learning the personal pronouns, partitive, genitive and the stem. I have a some problems how to recognise them and to use them. As example------>Onko sinu(lla), auttaa hän(tä), sanoa minu(lle), täytyykö tei(dän). how to see of they are in the partitive or stem, etc.... Hopefully somebody understand me. sorry but i explain it in my third learned language. btw, paljon kiitos Kat for the finnish language videos.
Hmm yeah I mean I'd have to personally look into it myself more, genetive actually is quite broad and expresses things eg ownership so I'm not sure off the top of my head what exactly the rules are o.O I've been meaning to make a video on those but it's just really complicated so I don't want to mess up xD SORRY!
Hello @KatChats Finnish and friends! Question: It seems to me that often on Finnish youtube/TV I hear people saying “sa” and “ma” instead of “sä” and “mä”. Am I just somehow blind to hearing the “ä”? Or are there actually some dialects where they use “a” at the end of those pronouns? NB! I am confident that when I hear that I’m not listening to Estonian or Estonians speak Finnish, I am aware that they don’t have ä at the end of their pronouns, mentioning just in case :)
I think it's just because of lazy pronunciation tbh xD When you speak faster or at a more normal pace some of the words slur together a bit or you get lazy to pronounce things so precisely so it sounds a bit more like an -a I guess xD

(late reply) Idioms are hard to translate. Sananmukaisesti ehkä "Ehkä toinen väärä tuottaa oikean." (Maybe a second wrong produces the right (result).)

Should I learn Puhekieli or Kirjakieli first?
You'll probably find way more material online about kirjakieli and that's what is used when you see Finnish written, but if you speak in everyday language to Finns it'll predominately be in puhekieli

When using word TE in more polite way, for example like writing an e-mail, do you write it like Te or te? Thanks...
In the middle of a sentence te, start of the sentence Te. You don't capitalize it unless it starts the sentence :)

P.S. You probably thought my question "sounded" weird, but I asked you that because in my language we capitalize it whether it is in middle of sentence or and beginning ( vi - you(plural); Vi - you in polite way), thanks again...
Some people do actually capitalise it... But I think it's more a business language thing. I've only seen it in formal emails/letters.

I never use "mä" or "sä", but "mie" and "sie".
"mä" or "sä" is used many places in finland "miä"/"mie" and "siä"/ "sie" are used to much narrower area..

no it's not an eastern dialect, it's clouser south east dialect witch is spead a little forvard to north near border... :P Pikku vinkki mä asun Kouvolassa ja "mie" tunnistuu etelä karjalaan..
