- A look back at Skill Squares / Starcades, made by Tomy in the 1980's. Skill Squares are small, wind-up target games with little balls that you try to flip at moving targets. They're colorful, fun, and collectible. They're a great example of an 80's mechanical toy--the kind of toys we played with before handheld electronic games became common. I had a lot of fun playing with Skill Squares when I was a kid growing up in the 80's.

I had the monkey one as a kid, but just recalled I also owned a long tube shaped one that you played golf in.

Anything like this, but more robust on the inside? Or similar toys by other companies? I distinctly remember games like these, but with a little more oomph in the quality. One was a monkey collecting rings from a tree and another was more of an actual crane collecting balls and trying to put them in a treasure chest, if my memory serves me right.
Thanks for the great vid! I just got a shooting’ gallery and the instruction label is on the left side of the cube whereas yours is on the back. Weird! I wonder why
I recently bought the shooting gallery one but the wind up is broken, do you have any way to fix it?
Unfortunately, not, I sacrificed on of these a while back to see how they are put together. The clear top has an inset ridge that fits snug into the colored base. It goes in about an inch and is glued in place with superglue. The only way to separate the two is to either cut it clean off or break it. once inside it disassembles easily with many small parts and gears. The winding mechanism is self-contained and sealed tight with more glue. Again, it cannot be opened without extreme force. Maybe a replacement could be found that would work. Once these stop winding, they are for decoration at that point.

I designed a circuit board that should allow me to connect to all the pads on the playfield. If it works, then I think I can control the lights and score digits pretty easily. Then I’ll have to get to work on the switches and sound. I think I’ll have to switch to a newer microcontroller to get the sound working though-because I’m running out of pins!
helicopter and monkey : insanely difficultt to get all the balls
mini head: too easy
the rest: real skill level close to zero, just fire fast and hope for the best
Definitely a couple of them are just random rapid fire. But they're all fun for the target demographic! Yeah, Helicopter is the one that requires some nuance. If you fire too hard, you'll lose all the balls that you've already caught.
