Doom II: Nuts 100% Kills - 85 Revenants vs 850 Cyberdemons [TAS]

"Nuts by B.P.R.D contains 10617 monsters in two rooms and is almost unplayable as a result. It is featured in Doomworld’s Top 10 Infamous WADs and also in their Top 100 Most Memorable Maps, placing 4th."
Pain. I started working on this 4 months ago...
This video is in 2 segments for reasons explained below, the second part starts at 17:16.
This is the first true UV-Max completion of this level, where 100% kills and 100% secrets (0 out of 0 in this case) is achieved. The issue with maxing this level is that even with really good infighting and perfect ammo management you are left with roughly 800 cyberdemons at 4000 health each and nothing besides your fists, which deals 2-20 damage per hit, to kill them with.
The monsters can do some damage to the cyberdemons through infighting, most notably the arch-viles, but eventually they get destroyed by the splash damage.
Any monster on the upper area that attacks the cyberdemons are also quickly killed off, so there is only one solution: gather up enough homing revenant rockets to tear through all the cyberdemons. So how many do we need exactly? 850 cyberdemon at 4000 health where revenants rockets do an average of 45 damage, that means we need to simply gather up at least 70000 rockets, great! ... There's just one more problem, while this is an incredibly easy task to do, it should take roughly 5 hours of circling revenants before you've got enough.
5 hours isn't too bad, sure, but that's in game time, unfortunately the game runs a bit slower once the rockets start to pile up... to the point where you are moving 0.5 seconds every minute!
So in real time it takes about 23 days to gather the rockets, which would be extremely boring to do. Luckily the upper area is really large, so what I did was take a segment where I circle the area, copy the inputs and insert them multiple times into the demo so that it's nearly 6 hours long and then simply let my laptop play through the demo for 23 days before I then take control! So nobody, including myself, have actually seen what happens between 30 minutes and 340 minutes.
Then of course the fun part begins, where you are moving 4 frames every 14 seconds to guide the rockets to the cyberdemons. There's a few places where I do some weird things like take damage for no reason, which is because of just horrible controls (I can't even move backwards) and doing it over again takes at least 30 minutes, so I left it like that. I would have tried to make it a bit better looking, but putting in effort to do that would have driven me mad, so it'll have to do. It took roughly 20 hours to do 10 minutes, needless to say that is just an awful experience. Then there was another 25 days or so of waiting to create the video.
At the start you have to help the revenants out by killing the barons, as the barons would win easily. The part between roughly 14:55 to 16:10 is repeated/copied until I have enough projectiles.
This can be done non-TAS, you just need an actual super computer optimized to play doom and about 6 hours.
What an absolute waste of my time this has been, hopefully you'll enjoy this more than I did. - Ігри
Time well spent.
This is how god punishes demons
I agree that it was worth taking the time to do this. I'm not sure it's worth _Zero Master's_ time, but I guess no one else was going to do it.
Can't wait for you to try this route
now you definitely should make a video about what TAS is for us to imagine what kind of effort is required to make THIS, sir
@@nevermind8535 This is actually an excellent suggestion. I don't think Zero Master is one to make such a video, but this is a situation where a behind-the-scenes video about the TAS would be far more interesting than the TAS itself.
This map cracks me up. First played it back in 2008 and the second I fired a single bullet it was just a powerpoint presentation.

My favorite part was the part with the Revenants. It just a shame the map author put in so few Revenants forcing you to take so long to summon 70,000 missiles. I can think of at least one other map where it would take much less time to achieve 70k Revenant rockets.
Maybe a "100000 revenants vs 800 cyberdemons" can be a nice wad.

This is how world records are being made baby!
Probably the most insane DOOM TAS ever created.
I wonder if it isn't the most insane TAS ever of any game.
Yea even with assisted tools it’s really impressive…
Now do it on nightmare…
Oh! What about okuplock?
Is this tas im disappo....
The (maybe) most hardest but most satisfied TAS.
The most impressive part is that neither the game shit the bed and exploded, nor did input handling stop functioning completely under such strain.
Yeah, that was my first reaction too...a Fatal Error OE 257-something,
*System Cache Overflow*
Well it's not exactly a lot of data for modern systems to handle. Remember doom is really primitive and literally run on simple calculations. These numbers are nothing when an average gaming PC can process multitudes more calculations per second.
If your computer crashes to this and you’re a pc gamer, it’s definitely high time for an upgrade lol
@@MiamiRyu nothing to do with the strength of your PC, more due to limitations of the engine
That's why you should use PrBoom+ for Nuts.

@@valentinaalex1262 it's easier to see toward the end when there are fewer Cyberdemons left like at 27:20 - they go FLYING from the sheer amount of damage hitting them, in spite of their huge mass!
Of course you wouldn't from this, when vid is recorded on godmode.
Imagine being one of those cyberdemons and after 5 hours of patiently waiting to kill doomguy, he jumps off the ledge trailing 70,000 rockets

I genuinely and honestly thought this was impossible. Zero Master, you are a genius.

What a random coincidence. I was just looking for a 30 minute distraction. Thanks ZM!

Well done. I appreciate the time you put in!
I haven't seen cyberdemons get yeeted across the area like this before. Truly NUTS!
Thank you for your time, sir. It was and is appreciated.
Now THAT was satisfying. DOOM is my favorite! Much appreciated!!
Now this is peak slaying, turning revenant missiles into a cyberdemon cheese grater
You are amazing and Karl J was my first initiation into your crazy ass. I love it. The ingenuity and determination is striking and the expert setups, this would make Romero and Carmack shed a bloody tear. Other records of yours as well have been amazing to take in. Cheers.
Great vid, and a really great description to explain why the uv-max records are only 92%
Absolute legend, incredible respect for your commitment to this achievement.
Amazing work as always, Zero
Watching 800+ Cyberdemons explode one by one without shooting them yourself is glorious.
Gotta make a necro edit. Just watched Karl Jobst's video about this particular demo and I have to say I appreciate this even more. The effort put into doing what is a proof of concept like this is utterly astounding.
Like going back to UA-cam in the early days. This is what people should upload! Great video! Rip and tear!

@@slothgirl2022 Not only that, that invulnerability thing also comes in the .wad and is pretty sweet : )
Dammit
Those two cyberdemons at the end just want to get out as they are hugging the wall, frantically searching for the exit while they have to witness the otherworldly annihilation of their army.
That is an impressively weird solution. Congrats! And you're hired. :D
Definitely nuts. 🤣🤣
Another awesome performance from ZM.
And this is why we should fear Revenants.
The backstory of how this run was created is fascinating. Apparently, it took over a month to do this video because of the slow frame rate, using programming and a lot of ZM's labour to direct the rockets -- which is now reduced to 30 minutes of gameplay. If 30 min seems long to you, imagine the tedium of making it! I am still not 100% sure what's happening but it seems to be a way to bring about friendly fire from the revenants and cyberdemons.
Revenants fire a honing missile 30% of the time and you can use them to cause other monsters to infight or kill them. This is 70k Revenant missiles all in one, so many in fact it doesn't even render the sprite of the missiles, so it looks invisible.
@@johns1625it evens out to a 50% chance. I highly recommend the excellent Decino video on the subject, “The Mystery of the Revenant Missile”, which steps through all the code paths and permutations.
Thank you UA-cam. A well recommended video indeed 👏🏾👏🏾
this is rad haha. thanks for the numbers breakdown too ;)
this map is truly insane. All those monsters... All those guts.... I love it.
Watching that kill counter climb was satisfying
This is the most justified LIKE i've ever gave. Good video and amazing job done! I knee your patience
This is absolutely amazing achievement. Great!
Would love to see a free moving camera perspective that follows the unstoppable revenant missiles!
17:16 I would have made the time card say
“5 hours later”
“(Technically)”
Absolutely and totally nuts! Fun to see a nearly bottomless reserve of missiles tear through each Cyberdemon over and over.
i just need to say "damn" that ia a lot of effort... well done you are a living legend
This 100% run of one map is longer than time of any% of all doom games together. This is impressive!
Doom 2016 is like an hour afaik, so not really
@@wolfetteplays8894 Right, and this took way longer than an hour so..... am I missing something here?
Calling BS on the TAS, Zero Master is legit good enough to do this himself. Jokes aside though you have the patience of a saint for this, well done.
Very impressive and also i think this explains the crazy damage output Revenant rockets have
Reminds me of the inside of the butcher's shop when I was a kid. Thanks to my buddy Mike for introducing me to DOOM back in '94. Love you, bro!
Petition for ZeroMaster to play Doom 3 too 🙏
I concur! Also Coincident would surely vote yes too : )
I think he already has. But the original version (good man!) not the BFG edition
The sounds of the Spider Demons being constantly cut off gets me every time.
Great to see that nuts is indeed uvmaxable (at least tas'able). With a total monster hp to max weapon damage ratio of 26+, either a truckload of infighting and/or feeble fisting is required. I never thought of using rev fireballs, although I probably should have after seeing NOYE map35.
Didn't look at the channel name until the very end of the video. Who else but Zero Master. Hats off for not ending up institutionalized after this feat.
I was looking at the nuts demo page the other day. Thinking "surely by now someone has TAS-punched all the cybers"
But leave it to you to work smarter, not harder!
God bless this man’s soul 5 hours I don’t know of anyone other than zero master to do any of this
Literally the calmest black metal concert I have ever seen in my life.
This was nuts!
TENS OF THOUSANDS OF REVENANT ROCKETS

zero master: thx for free rockets lol
It doesn't really matter how many rockets there are when the map is so big
I expect this to blow up a bit now ^^
This is just beautiful
A nice 2D above view, of the cluster fireballs moving through Cybers would be awesome

edit: and you've finished with style with a noice health/armor balance, haha! :D
Nice.
very earned sub. nice work
Incredibile! As always, such an entertaining video!
Walk me through something, do revenant missiles '' condense'' into the last missile we see or does the game just not render the cloud of missiles we should be seeing?
I feel like i am missing something obvious, but i'd like to be illuminated.
they are all nearly exactly on top of each other, so you only see like a few of them, but they are all rendered.
@@ZeroMaster thank you so much! It's awesome that someone with your skills would do such a run and share it with us!
