My Mannnnn!!!! Thank you so much for your videos and responding to my annoying questions. Just finished my DIY conversion with the Ice Barrel. I’m weak, just did my first plunge at 66 degrees. Plan to lower every week. I’m stoked so is family. Thank you. God Bless!

Thanks for the video Dave. I built your DIY with the 1/2 HP about a year ago and love it. I live in AZ and temps in the summer are hitting about 100 now. Running on boost set at 39 degrees mine is at about 48 in the morning and around 56 when I get home. Not bad, but I love the 39 to 45 temp, so I am going to save my pennies and upgrade the bad boy. Keep the content coming.
Thanks for the love and update John! You’d be surprised how many people who probably buy your 1/2 for good money. I’ve had some silly offers but I want to give it away for a local guy who I think this can really help.
Dude! I just did your build for the 1/2hp chiller. I'm in colorado with temps in the 80s so far. A week in and it has had no problems keeping temp at 50. Haven't gone lower yet. Thanks for the videos!
Video is great! I have my new build in progress. I'm waiting on a 1/3 HP chiller. It's amazing how much the water moving changes the experience. I watched most of your videos when getting ideas, and started plunging.
Love your content as usual! My 1/4 power is still going strong but totally understand with the chiller not holding the temp its set to. Maybe upgrade to the 1hp one day!
Just got an ice barrel using the 4th of July discount and used your videos as the main source to make my decision. Not ready to bite the bullet yet on a chiller, but I may make the jump later. For now going to try making my own ice and see where that gets me. Have you ever tried the penguin chiller with the ice barrel adapter? Wondering if you can just get the adapter and buy a different chiller.
Love you posted this I’ve been using the 1/2 hp for a few months and now that it’s hot as hell in the NE the barrel won’t get lower then 52ish… bummer but going to keep it it’s been great and getting that 1hp to get it back to 39 where it belongs!
It’s crazy I’ve had 5 people reach out wanting to buy my 1/2hp chiller since posting this. I won’t sell it I’m gonna give it to someone local who’s trying to get into cold plunging. Just saying there’s definitely a market for chillers.
Yeah hard to come by used for sure. It’s an awesome machine had zero issues and in the spring held 42 consistently no problem. I have it on the back balcony right next to my garden hose it’s a great spot so don’t want to move it but gets crushed with the sun, and I have the black barrel. Big golfer and just turned 40 so although I’m holding up pretty well the body is getting the sense I’m older! Cold plunging has been a game changer for range of motion. Recommended your setup to a ton of buds I know a handful have hopped on board. Keep it up dude love your stuff!
Love your content brah 🤙 in the process of upgrading my ice wheelie bin to a wheelie bin with a chiller, as like you with your ice barrel I love the ergonomic feel of it - anyway stay chilled brah 🤙
I had the 1/2 HP. Ended up leaking out of the unit after 6 months, they refunded me and I upgraded to the 1HP since I live in a hot desert climate. I try and get the temp down to 41* but it never gets quite there. 45-47 is the coldest I can get it in these hot temps, and by the afternoon this summer it creeps up to 52-55 then back down to 44-45 by morning. Doesn’t seem to maintain cooler temps that much better than when I had the 1/2 HP but it’s definitely louder. I too keep it cranking 24/7. I plunge first thing in the morning and most evenings. All in all I’m happy with it.
I have the 1hp coming tomorrow. Using your setup and love it. How do you like that sweat tent. I’ve been looking at getting one of those too. Definitely make a video on that.
Sick! I love it! Actually posted a video on it a few days ago. Content coming often and even more cool stuff in the pipe. I hate to say this and sound like a crazy UA-camr… but “Subscribe and hit that Notification Bell” 😋💯🫶🏽😁
Awesome video. Such great tutorials. I just got the 1hp to build a plunge here in Vegas! Curious to see how it does with temps in the 110's... We will see! Thanks for your videos!
I’ve Built this set up! Unfortunately I put the barrel in the only small spot in back yard that’s not shaded. My 1/2 Hp still does an ample job and When I Change out the water(It’s been 2 months) I’m sure moving the barrel into the shade will get me more exact temps!
The first place I’d look for to fix the issue with water not cooling enough would be the “tub.” I’m not going with one of these, or one of the many like it, because they’re not insulated (like, at all). I’d rather spring for a highly insulated “tub” that can keep liquids or ice cold for much, much longer, regardless of the chiller or pump activity.
No doubt,,,I've built 2 tubs, one for my vacation home and regular home. One in very hot Houston. I used a plastic rubbermaid in Houston and metal cattle trough in New Mexico. I used spray adhesive to adhere a moving blanket to both tubs covering entire surface, then glued fiberglass insulation all around the tub to the moving blanket. I then completely sealed with duct tape,,,about 2.5 rolls so fiberglass cannot get wet, and then glued and wrapped a silver reflective wrap to duct tape around the tub. I sealed edges with duct tape,,,but have some shrink wrap tubing coming in and going to see if I can give it a less of a redneck engineered look around the edges. I also have tubs sit on 1 inch foam insulation boards and have a 1 inch foam insulation tops both tubs. 1/2 hp has no problem keeping water in 30's if I want but I opt for 45degree,,,and chiller hardly every cycles on. I wanted to use a 1/4 hp on second tub,,,but you can hardly buy em,,,so got another 1/2 hp. 1 HP is way overkill for a well insulated tub in most states sans possibly Arizone or Nevada, and I feel so is 1/2 hp. If I were to build a third I would use some sort of rubber roll instead of the moving blanket and go with 1/4 hp. Both my tubs are well insulated and neither one sweats. You would not build a house to cool without it being thoroughly insulated, not sure why one would have a cold tub that is not thoroughly insulated.
Great content!! Keep up the good work. I ordered the MODTUB. I originally wanted the ice barrel but didn’t want to be in a crouched position. The polar monkeys is my favorite but didn’t fit in the space I had set. Let’s see how it goes.
Hey Dave - Can you speak to outdoor use? I have the Ice Barrel 300 otw and purchased an Active Aqua chiller. I was concerned about rain as the plan was to put this on my outdoor open patio and emailed the manufacturer who said they are not meant for outdoor use and I would void the warranty if I tried to enclose it somehow. So I'm returning it and starting over. Do you know of a chiller that would be good for outdoor use? I could cover with a tarp when not in use but am concerned about any electronics getting wet. Thoughts?
Its so frustrating but to my surprise, there is not a chiller on the market (that is not one from china made for these plug and play cold plunges) that states "Outdoor rated". I have had and used my Active Aqua chiller outside in FL for over a year with not one issue. Even the Plunge used the same chiller and on their site stated they are made for outside, but the Active Aqua and even Eco Plus say they cant be outside, which is odd... Who has hydroponics setups inside? That is what they were originally made for. I think they just dont want to have to cover a problem so they use that as an out. But I can say from my experience, and I am not over protective, they are stellar options.
I have an ice barrel 400 - debating on a 1/4 hp vs a 1/2 horse power chiller. I live in So Cal - where the temps stay around mid 70's most of the year? Thoughts Mr Maus?
Nice video! I live in Norway, and it can get cold during winter. Can the cold plunge stay outside, under a roof and work all year? How do I prevent the machinery from freezing to a block of ice? 🙂
That is a great question and I am under the impression (from what i have heard others say) as long as you keep it on and the water above freezing it should not freeze. But I dont know that for 100% fact
Hey David, thanks for the video. I live in NJ & I'm planning on setting this up in my basement. I ordered the 1/4 HP chiller and I'm hoping to work my way down to 39 degrees eventually with the plunges. However, I'm confused... does a 1/2 or 1 HP Chiller do a better job chilling the water? I thought they all have ability to get water to 39 degrees, am I missing something here?
They do and being up north you might be fine with the 1/4. The higher the HP the faster and easily it will cool. But yes you can get to 39 with the chillers. Enjoy it! Let me know if you need help through the setup. 🤙🏽
I live in Ontario Canada and ordered the 1/4 HP for my 100 gallon rubbermaid tub. Its being set up in my garage which is kept between 65-70 degrees. Do you think the 1/4 will be fine?
Can you point me in the direction of using just a circulation pump with the filter attached and no chiller? I'm thinking of getting the inflated/ soft sided tubs. ie nurecover
I have a 1/2 hp Ecoplus commercial chiller for my 100 gallon stock tank. Maintains 40 even when its in the 90s (I live in Canada). I had a 1/3 hp off of Alibaba but it could not keep up. It is a very well insulated unit though (2 inch rigid foam, spray insulation, and insulted pipes)
Head to head comparison… the EcoPlus has 1000 more BTU of chilling power than the Active Aqua (both 1/2hp). This is why I’m seriously considering the EcoPlus. How is it holding up?
