However, I think I'm going with the ice barrel 300 and 1/2 HP chiller set your recommended for the up coming summer heat!!

Love the video, David! I'm putting together my Ice Barrel 300 components now and thinking it would be beneficial to have the mini ball valve right before the in-line strainer. That way, I could cut the water off to service anything downstream. What do you think?
I just put together my Ice Barrel 300 w/ ActiveAqua 1/4 HP. Works perfectly using your setup. I did add a mini ball valve first before adding the strainer. This lets me turn off the water to everything if I needed to change anything. The 1/4 HP chiller chills at about 5 degrees an hour, and got down to temp really quickly. I don't see any reason to pay $2K for a chiller.
Finally, the perfect video. You've answered every question all in one place.
From your videos I've been able to come to the conclusion that the ice barrel 300 is the best possible entry level plunge for hot climates. Because it is lightweight, smaller foot print, insulated, and has chiller ports. As a college student the portability is very important to me because it will make moving from houses/apartments doable. I was looking at the portable inflatable plunges but they are not as insulated as the ice barrel 300. Additionally, the insulation allows for you to get a lower horse power chiller which saves you a lot of money.
For other people deciding between the 300 or the 400. Here are some other reasons why you should pick the 300 over the 400:
-the 400 is not insulated
-the 400 requires a step stool to get in and is high off the ground, there is a risk of slipping at the high height especially with cold and wet legs. While this may not be a problem for an experienced plunger it is daunting whenever you have guests over. ~Good luck pulling someone out of the 400 if they pull a hamstring in there.
-the 400 does not have chiller ports
Because of your videos I've been able to save thousands of dollars on mistakes.

I have your DIY Ice Barrel 300 1/2HP set up and love it, works great. The only thing I noticed is that with my set up and being in my garage her in Florida my temp will fluctuate 2-3 degrees. The chiller is awesome because it will kick back on when the temp is 2-3 higher than the set temp. Need to figure out a way to insulate the tubes and filter to decrease the amount of condensation, I’m sure it will only get worse are summer gets closer.
Oh yeah, the tube condensation is that hidden problem. Its not as bad as a galvanized tub is, or even the rubbermaid tubs... but it will bead up for sure.
I spent 80 dollars on Amazon in June. It came with a semi insulated cold plunge tub(big enough for me to go all the way down to my chin comfortably), it has a drain, it came with two 8 pounds ice block maker. Ive veen doing it faithfully every day and ive not had any problem with it yet. But even if i have a problrm, ill just buy another one. I put about 40-50 pounds of ice, and it gets down to 37-45

By the way, did my first two cold plunges in IB300 last couple of days before gym/workout - it was exhilarating, great boost of energy. I've never taken pre-workout stuff, now I know I don't need any 😅. Started at 50 degrees, plan to work down to around 40 over time - thanks for helping me get on board with ice baths and keeping healthy!

Yes I would do it if there is any slight scare of drips or leaks. I had it in my kits, but it wasnt 100% needed for everyone so i removed it.
So I built a custom cattle trough, fully insulated in my garage. Built around with wood, LP smart side. I have a portion of the build with a Danner 900, into a house filter with in line ozone sanitation. Joe Krause plan. I am getting a chiller next month. I need to know what I need, I am so torn. Penguin 1/2 hp/he. I don’t like active aqua as much. I’ve looked into eco plus. I have a grand to spend

Thanks for the video. Looking to finally build my first cold plunge. Really getting tired of buying ice. I live in Southern California so in the summer I can't buy enough ice to keep it cold. With the Ice Barrel 300 would you recommend the 1/2 HP or could I get away with the 1/4 HP in the summer months where it can get over 100 during the day and 75 at night?

There are so many options worldwide. I haven’t tried that one exactly but many like it. Inflatable tubs are cool and can definitely serve an affordable purpose.
Hey Dave, love your vid! I’m doing my own DIY and wondering how to you take off the front cover of your ActiveAqua pump? And what is the attachment you use to connect to the filter? Is it even necessary to take the cover off to use it inline (outside the plunge)?Thanks bro!

Had issues with the ActiveAqua 1HP. Returned it and got the EcoPlus 1.5 HP. Much better product IMO. It's the same price and the quality of the components inside and out are much better.
I have videos comparing both, Eco Plus is a SOLID unit.
Would love a comparison video between the Ice Barrel 400 and the Ice Up Barrel. I'm struggling to make a decision between the two and DIY a chiller on either. I would appreciate your input there.
Great Options either way you go, cost should end up about the same too. Before making a video I can comment that:
1. Both will get cold, both will give you that active upright position, both will save on some space, and both are easy to transport.
2. if you want something bulletproof, easy to take care of, and durable go with Ice Barrel and the DIY I do. That is the main advantage of the durable plastic vs the inflatables. Inflatables will discolor over time.
3. The chiller, ozone, filter setup with Ice Up is pretty strong. Does a great job chilling fast and keeps the water very clean.
Both are great! I can honestly recommend both. Ice UP is bigger, Ice Barrel is more durable. Ice Up comes ready to just hook up, Ice Barrel you have to do a little DIY work.

Hey David!! i've been watching a ton of your videos to decide on our best cold set up. I keep going back & forth between the 1hp & 1/2 hp aqua chiller. We live in utah temps are good most of the year except summers reach anywhere from 112-120 so definitely hotter than Florida avg.
We thought the garage might help protect our chiller from sun, but then the garage itself is warmer. Do you think we should go with the 1hp to be safe? or would a 1/2 hp cut it. I'm planning to get the Ice barrel 300 with it. Thanks so much!
Hey David, love your content - Question for you. You mention using the 1000 GL/HR pump, but you're referring to the 1HP chiller, right? So, I ordered the 1/2 HP Active Aqua Chiller and the 800 GPH pump. Will that work for this setup? I'm going to be using this pump on the Ice Barrel 300 btw.
So like you, I live in Florida. I built my own plunge from a Grizzly 400 and am thinking about adding a 1/4hp chiller. My only concern is the weather. I know you have said that your Active Aquas have been outside, not under cover of a roof. Just looking for piece of mind before I buy one and have it die from the weather. Are the Active Aquas ok to be outside in the rain and such here in Florida? Would you recommend putting them in something like a deck box? Thank you for all the cold plunge advice.
Does the 1 /4 horsepower chiller always keep it at 50 or below no matter insulation? 50 is the lowest u have to go to get the benefits ?

It could work! I started with a galvanized trough inside with a 1/2hp and it worked in a hot FL room in FL.

Thank you! You can totally use a larger filter if you’d like. Same setup for the most part, most use a 3/4” connection as well
Have you ever tried the revx water chillers?
You do some great videos, however the one thing that kills me is using strainer and filter interchangeably. While they do basically the same thing a strainer is really meant to prevent physical damage to a system component. A filter does some level of cleaning to a system. On my system i use both a strainer to protect the pump and then to the filter before the chiller. I use a small amount of bleach and maintain my free chlorine like a swimming pool. I only change my water every 4-6 months and it is crystal clear the entire time. But, I realize some don't want to expose themselves to sodium hypochlorite (bleach) if they don't understand the off-gassing principal of bleach and safe levels of exposure.
Its funny you say that, when I first started sharing this content I was also confused at the difference. I totally get what you are saying. Filters are next level for those who want that extra cleaning power, I failed to mention in this video the cost of the replacement filters. Some of my setups that use filters give me so much trouble when the filters get just a little bit dirty. Flow rate decreases and it almost makes you change it. Can get expensive. I use water stabilizer, HP and sometimes Ozone. Water is clean, clear and doesnt smell. The Strainer is just there to keep debris from my pump. Works just as good as all my other systems. Hey David! Great video. Do you know how long it takes to cool the IB 300 with the 1/4 chiller? I’m thinking about turning it off during peak electric hours to be cost efficient
I havent timed it and it would be tough to say becuase it would depend on the ambient temps around. However it bet once you got the water down to your temp you could easily get away with it being unplugged 12 hours a day or so, the insulation is a game changer!
Also remember that when its off, the water isnt circulating and it could end up getting a little nasty sooner than it should. just a thought! :)
If the water is cloudy the chemical balance is off or there is bacteria in the water, for those with sensitive skin or sharing the plunge with others its highly advisable to clear the water with sanitizer and a proper PH balance before using it again, or simply dump, clean and refill the plunge.
Yes exactly. Ice Barrel has a pretty unique formula in their Water Stabilizer. From what I have heard its great for sensitive skin too.
Couple questions , currently have the ice barrel 300 (77 gallons) and live in Texas. The 1/4 hp chiller should get sufficient based on what you’re saying. What is the 3/4" FHT to 3/4" Barb for ? Also, is active aqua water proof? I want to leave it outside uncovered. Last thought, Why didn’t ice barrel ever mention the 500 , it came out of no where and I just bought my 300 in November.

I am not a fan of the Inkbirds, I have 2 and both give me issues. The chiller will automatically shut off once it reached your set temp.

Not at all, I see people do it but I save that for the hot relaxing baths (i never take, lol)
I bought a Active Aqua 1/10 hp cooler. I have a small plunge bath I believe it's called arctic plunge. It's not very big at all. I fit in it though. Question is the one 10th hp no matter what I said the temperature that I can't get a below 62°. I'm assuming after seeing your video this cooler is way too weak for what I need? Question is with the quarter horsepower be enough for my use
For sure that is more for a small fish tank. The 1/2 would work well.

The 1/4 chiller Amazon list has a 3/4" Stainless Steel Mini Ball Valve,Female NPT x Male NPT Thread, Shut-Off Valve. I don’t see this in the video. Where do you put this?
I didn’t use it but many asked. It goes directly on the barrel as a shut off
I bought a 1 1/5 HP eco plus as I got a wicked deal on it for my 150 gallon stock tank. Are all the fittings needed the same as the ones on the your 1 HP DIY kit? Also, is the 1000 GPH Active Aqua a good pump for it?

Hey David - I put in 6 of the brick size ice blocks last night, it was in the 30's overnight here in Alabama and the temp was not under 50 degrees. What's your experience with this, just more ice blocks or add them before plunge in the morning instead? I'm thinking I'll have trouble keeping it under 50 in the summer. thanks for all you do, looking forward to the new chiller video!
Typically the first time you are cooling your water in the barrel it will take substantially more ice at first, but once you get it down under 50, it should only take a few every few days to keep it cold

The only concern with that small of a chiller is the volume it can handle. It might be pushing the limits with the IB500. 1/4 is the smallest I would recommend but do what is best for you.
@keeganromer4169 has your IB500 shipped yet or did they give you a more precise ship date other than the 4-5 weeks advertised?

Love these videos as I begin my journey to create my DIY. Question I have is with your 1/4 hp build kit - what size adaptor do I need to connect the pump to the strainer? This is using the active aqua 1100 (1000). I can’t find measurements anywhere on the sizing going into the pump. Thank you!
Thanks! With that pump you can use the 3/4” adapter and tubes.
Thanks, David! Really narrowing down my options to start my DIY based off your knowledge and reviews. One last question is should I run a weaker pump with a 1/4 chiller? I’m afraid the AA1000 might be too powerful based off the chiller specs. Just don’t want to cause issues if you know of.

I know you live in Florida, but do you have any recommendations for how to keep your water clean long term in below freezing temps? I know I can get a hot+cold chiller like ice up industries and the cold life have, but I would love to know if there is a cheaper option. I don’t think I could use the active aqua pump in the winter because the water in the hose and pump components would freeze.
If you just got the pump and put it inside the water it would still push and pull a good amount of water and i would think it would keep it from freezing over, pretty easily. Maybe add some salt to it as well
Yeah , I’m surprised how much heat my Plunge injects into the tub with the pump and ozone turned on. I assumed that in the winter I could turn off the chiller and it would be cold but even with 40s and 50s temps , my tub would be sitting at 60 degrees.
Thankfully I removed the UV light which was seriously heating up the water so now my energy bill is less and the water is still clean.
What are your thoughts on the new ice barrel chiller ? I’m not seeing how many HP it is in the specs as well

Re: "BEWARE of BAD CHILLERs", has Active Aqua confirmed their refrigerant is safe for human bathing (I'm looking at 1/4HP)? I have the 1/3 Roctia from Walmart, but considering moving to Active Aqua's 1/4HP due to company/brand reputation hopefully equaling quality.
No, so far none of the chillers on the market are "safe for human bathing" except the new Ice Barrel chiller. (to my knowledge) The reason I bring this up is there are some companies who are not even in the water chiller wheelhouse but are trying to grab some cash by pushing a cheap chiller on the market. Might be fine, but its also scary to think some chillers we spend $200,500,1000 on today may not even be in business in 6 months. I like to stick with brands who have been around and plan on sticking around.
@DavidMausJr very interesting. However, I'm not eager to drop $2.5K on IB chiller. Do you have any insight on how much ice and how frequently IB 300/500 needs to chill?

@@DavidMausJr Ive ordered the pump, hoses, and strainer 3 times. Every time there is no delivery message or attempt at delivery and i get an email saying my refund is being issued as if I had sent it back. Everything else has been delivered as normal
Even the 1.5hp chiller came in with no issues lol
