It sounds that this art movement was purely fueled by propaganda and self-interest, yet it still is appreciated 4 centuries later. Great art needs great patrons, no matter how conniving or sinister the reasons behind the patronage of these arts, they bore fruit that shows testament to the wonders human hands could achieve.
if you look at all of art history you will find this true more times than not. the same way media is used for propaganda today is how its been used since ancient times. before the camera, sculpture, art and architecture were used to spread ideas and concepts for good and for bad. especially since prior to the printing press being able to read wasnt as widespread, so the public would be informed by the visual arts and whatever their leaders told them. propaganda is kind of a modern term that better describes what "art" in the past really was, and modern "art" is actually a relatively modern concept that didnt really emerge until the late 1800s. before that it was all essentially propaganda meant to endear the people to their leaders and their society.
