I mean, we’ve had thirty years to look back on this. Did they really change it to Waif Me because they wanted more kids to have access to it (which is kinda weird that you’d want kids listening to it given the themes) or because you wanted to “shift more units”, so to speak? A lot of Cobain’s/Nirvana’s moves seemed terribly calculated, whether it was on their behalf or at the behest of the label. The stuff of urban legend now regardless… still an all-time classic record and highly provocative art project. Lord knows I was drawn to it as a 13-year old when it came out. The Santa/Jesus and other imagery of the Heart-Shaped Box vid in particular.

@@jasonkh4 nirvana didn’t want it changed. Kmart and other big box retailers wouldn’t carry it so they had to do something so they changed it to waif me. I remember when it came out and it was a big joke to nirrvana and everyone except big box stores they mocked it for about a week. Unless you’re saying you think nirvana was in on it, in which case, did you know the moon was made of green cheese?

@@spatulacityrecords6263 no need to condescend, I’m just saying that it’s no secret how many aspects of the music industry and pop stardom are calculated, almost political in how one’s image and the things they say are intended to give an impression of something whether or not they actually feel that way about it. Kurt in particular was notoriously hypocritical and contradictory, feigning the bored introvert rocker whilst secretly yearning and desperate to be famous.

@@jasonkh4 I wasn’t being condescending, but I do disagree with your assessment of Cobain’s desires. I’m no expert though. And the 80’s and 90’s were the start of the corporate rule and takeover of the US, IMO. Especially, the music world. If you wanted to be successful, you had to bow down to them.

@@spatulacityrecords6263 well Krist has spoken at length about Kurt’s contradictions and hypocritical tendencies. It’s right there in the music: wanted it to sound all gnarly and badass for the grunge cred whilst secretly adoring the melodies of the Beatles and pop rock bands of his day i.e. Boston. Smells Like Teen Spirit is essentially More Than a Feeling lol

@@jasonkh4 I’m pretty sure the definition of any 20 year old is contradiction and hypocrisy. That’s what you do when you’re in your 20s is to figure out what you believe in and what demons from your childhood need exorcised. I don’t think it’s fair to judge someone on their life choices when they died at 27. I couldn’t even count how many times I have risen from the ashes of my beliefs or lost faith in myself or others and I’m a no one.
