When the lion bares his teeth, do not / fancy that the lion shows to you a smile. / I have slain the man that sought my heart's blood many a time. / Riding a noble mare whose back none else may climb, / Whose hind and fore-legs seem in galloping as one / Nor hand nor foot requireth she to urge her on. / And O the days when I have swung my fine-edged glaive / Amidst a sea of death where wave was dashed on wave! / The desert knows me well, the night, the mounted men, / The battle and the sword, the paper and the pen

Zaid z Yes. I even heard from an Arab poet who is fluent in English who won’t dare translate his own poetry into English. Frustrated with not getting the meaning across. If you’re serious about feeling that writing, better learn the language.

This is false. Arabs have a misguided view that things cannot be adequately translated into other languages from Arabic. I’m a linguistics major, trust me this a massive misconception.

For none Arabic speakers there are at least three poems in this one poem. Every word has a connotation, hyperbole, metaphor and literal meaning that connects to the next without breaking its poetic stance. It’s a masterpiece of a language. It’s called a mathematical language for a reason.

Arabic can`t be more strong than Russian because Russian grammar is much more complicated. And it has 10 vowels, not 3 like in Arabic.

The Arabic language and Arabic poetry are a masterpiece, and translating it into English or any other language does not give you the full meaning because it is a complex and integrated language in all aspects. It has special rules, and for me, as an Arabic speaker, I will be happy to explain or teach this language to anyone.❤❤

Actually this poem is well know as "The poem that killed its owner"
when he surrounded by group of enemies the leader of that group said to him
"Didn't you the one who said the Desert knows me well....."
he answered "Yes I did" so he fought along his son and his slave that day till all fall dead
the Arabs later called this "The poem that killed its owner"

@@thearabianwolf3996 Your information is limited. The poem was not the first reason for killing Al-Mutanabbi. The first reason is that Al-Mutanabbi harshly satirized Dabbat Al-Asadi with his poetry. When Al-Mutanabbi was returning to Kufa with his son Muhammad and his servant Mufleh, he met them with Fatik Al-Asadi and a group of people with him. Al-Mutanabbi alerted that Dabbat Al-Asadi had sent Fatik to kill him after he satirized him. so Al-Mutanabbi decided to escape, but his servant Mufleh forbade him from escaping, saying, “Should you evade them when you are the one who said, 'Horses, night, and desert know me, and the sword, spear, paper, and pen?'” Al-Mutanabbi replied to him, saying, “You killed me with it, ALLAH kill you.” then Al-Mutanabbi returned to confront Fatik al-Assad and those with him until he, his son Muhammad, and his servant Mufleh were killed (and this is the second reason), so people called the poem [a killer of al-Mutanabbi].

the arabs are masters of poetry it was they're sword that they fought with. they've introduced romantic extravagant poems to the world and have taught the surrounding nations the powers of the word. the persian's and the turks have taken a lot of they're literature and way of expressing through poetry but they do not admit that lol.

Bullshit, Persians always had history of literature and writing system, thousands of years before the Arabs.
Even your so called "Arabic" Alphabet (Abjad) is stolen from the Aramaic Alphabet
And to your pathetic points about vocabulary, Just because we use Arabic words for a certain thing doesnt mean we never had such a thing, We Just use Arabic words because of İslamic influence on literary culture.

    • @enlightenlife2840
      @enlightenlife2840 4 роки тому +19

@@aburafidhaas-safawi839 theres no such thing as stolen. All are semetic languages that are intertwined with eachother. In yemen and oman there are semetic old languages that still exist till today that the arabic and other semetic languages have come out of. Look the 'ilqaa' of how things are to be expressed in eastern poetry is definitely heavely influenced by the way the arabs have done it. Poetry was there tool for expression since they didn't have a civilisation till they got one. There bravery for going very far with expressive poetry definetly played a part in spreading this all over the world.

It's too much better in Arabic, we feel it like if it's Beethoven's music or Van Gogh's paintings, Al mutanabi is The GREATEST Artist ever for me, he designed his own world by his words and he created magnificent meanings within it!
Some of you will say ( Sorry, but I don't think so ) and I'll respect that; because no one can translate these LEGENDARY POEMS to any other language while preserving the quality and music they contain in Arabic.
We were born with this beautiful luck, and I am very grateful to God for making al-Mutanabi utter my native language

  • @batminton7467

everything can be translated from one language into another. It's true that literal translation is not always possible, but language is a physical way of expressing thoughts that are non-lingual. And if someone thinks that another language isn't capable of conveying the same meaning he is just expressing his insecureness of the lack of knowledge of that other language. You can look at it as the colors of the light spectrum. Every color has the same capabilities as all the colors combined aka transparent light but everyone has a favorite color in which someone wants to express himself in. Same with languages, you can express everything in whatever language you fancy or feel comfortable with.
