I’ve replaced my distributor and now I’m running a -20° timing advance for number one cylinder at idle. I’m fairly confident the distributor is not a tooth off as it’s pointing at or just before the #1 cylinder pin on the cap @TDC.

  • @scottfindlay2625

unless your replacing the wires, leave them on the plugs and unplug from the distributor, its easier.
Second, DON'T use an OEM distributor they are plastic and they are garbage and break the ears off then you can't tighten your cap, spend the extra money and get an all aluminium distributor.
Third, not all engines have that timing mark on the front, mine does not have any of that and is a factory 98 k1500 5.7 vortec and can be a pain to drop in the new distributor sometimes. i had to replace my distributor when the dealer broke mine and denied any wrong doing when they replaced my engine. they had a zip tie holding down my cap.....

I've watched a few videos on adjusting the distributor position but the hold down tab on the distributor do not allow me to rotate by hand as other distributors seem to. Am I suppose to use a wrench on the square part of the shaft or does your distributor not allow it to be adjusted?

I was going to buy one of these distributors from A1. But, when he said don't tighten the distributor cap too tight (9:25) because your going into plastic. I decided not to buy it. Because my OEM is plastic and the ear is broke where the screw goes into it right where he's talking about. This is a common problem with the OEM's. I will buy one that screws into metal. Why would I replace plastic with plastic.

dave a Hello there's a channel on UA-cam called scannerdanner. If you want to understand more about vehicle diagnostics he's your guy. He also has a website called scannerdanner premium. It's $11 per month to be a member. He is a teacher at Rosedale technical college in Pittsburgh PA. The premium site takes you along in video format of his class lectures. He also wrote a book which is available in paperback or ebook. Which is to be used as trouble shooting guide in the field. His premium site has a 14 day free trial. Once there he has a video that covers this specific topic in regards to 5.7 vortec distributor and worn gear and symptoms of it. CAM-CRANK CORRELATION TROUBLE CODE (1998 CHEVY 5.0L) that is the title of the video and it is only available on his premium site. Again his site has 14 day free trial. You can create an account watch that video and leave before the 14 days are up. Or you can stick around and pick up what he's putting down and learn quite bit like I have over the last 5 months. It's up to you. But I would highly recommend you at least checking out the video about your issue. And then be the judge from there as to sticking around or not.

Dumb to remove the plug wires if ur reusing the same wires. TDC doesn't matter. Just make sure ur rotor is pointing in the Exact same position when u reassemble. Computer takes over n adjusts timing. Disconnect P.I.P to set base timing if u need to. Then reconnect. Computer does the rest.
