Rating: 8.2/10 In Short: Space Science and the 500 year future of humanity Notes: Lex and chris have a fun quirky vibe together that is interesting, and seeing/hearing lex light up at the intersection of physics/space/science/biology is super cool, and I felt the same way hearing chris talk. Chris' job is extremely unique, studying astronauts and thinking about putting humans into space for long amounts of time and the future. The beginning was a bit of a plug for chris' book, but it gets better later on. They jump into fun ideas at times, but not super well, and instead chris being focused on his stuff was best---science in space and aliens and thinking about the future of humans in space. Bigger picture wasn’t as good, but not his/lex's fault. Overall a classic good space/science intersection podcast.

It is most awesome to open You Tube and see real ppl, rational, sane, professional, intelligent ppl, talking seriously about not only space travel, but colonizing planets other than Earth. I think about reading, many years ago, the reprint of Isaac Asimov' s books when he wrote as Paul French (?). He wrote Forwards apologizing for the stories about men living on the known planets doing things in ways that we later knew were not possible in the way he had described, but he hoped readers would enjoy the books anyway. They were, at the time of original publication, simply science fiction. It isn't science fiction anymore. Ppl living on other planets is actually going to happen in a foreseeable future. For real. You should do a podcast with a random human, just someone you meet on the street and ask them general questions about life, that would be pretty interesting lol
I agree, however I think he would have had a conversation with them to tell if they can think. I'm not saying some people can't but it's a muscle a lot of regular people don't use.
Could routinely turning on these genes artificially, for example for high altitude, eventually lead to the evolution of humans who are unable to respond to natural cues to turn these things on/off? Might be worth exploring just in case. On the other hand they may be genes we use infrequently anyways, and they retain the knowledge of what to do even if not used for generations and then suddenly used...
Probably need to dial down the genes for autoimmune response first or else the human body might look at the new capability as a threat and start a biological war within.

Hey Lex, I think this is one of the most important conversations you've had on this channel. I'm a professional electrical and chemical engineer with a huge archeological fascination and past. The entropy goggles analogy has been a critical part of my enthusiastic hobby of looking for "rocks" and has morphed into a time machine in my mind. I wish for everyone, in this day and age, to understand, how esoteric their ideas really are. There is a basic reality we all must abide by, with small entertaining ventures that fill the mundane. To understand where one is and create a fulfilling future for those around them, seems to be most important. Be good to yourself and others.
I am pleasantly surprised that I really love this podcast with Chris Mason. You are the best Lex. I just find your podcast so wonderfully interesting. My friends make fun of me for listening a watching your podcast so much. I am the better person for it. Thank you again. I love the questions you ask your guests as well.

I’ve spent my entire career as an artist creating designs for a future I won’t live in. Designs inspired by a deep reverence for nature, children, and animals. They are seeds and spores of beauty for space journeyers to take to the next frontier. I’ve felt it my ‘duty’, as you refer to, to create from a space of truth, beauty, and kindness; as well as a forgiving spirit towards the fallibility of humans. Onward & Upward
Keir Dullea, "Dave" from 2001: A Space Odyssey, was in a short-lived but imaginative Canadian show called The Starlost about a generation ship in which the communities living aboard in separate modules didn't know about one another. Some of the things you guys touched on were portrayed on the show. It's on the UA-cams
Could go the 40k route. Their hive cities survive on corpse starch. Completely kidding. Just ordered Chris’s book. It’s 15-16 bucks on kindle. Also could generate gravity. There is a futurist named Issac Arthur who does an entire series on exploring space from the solar system to interstellar travel with really cool art. 10s if not hundreds of hours of video on the future of exploration of space.

Chris has literally blown up into a science-celebrity in the past 10 years. I was with him when we barely had any lab space.
I will save several parts of this discussion into my long-term memory. Thnx
Not one mention of Zardoz? You're both going to have to watch that movie and do another podcast.
"The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude." Friedrich Nietzsche ... Thank you Lex for another beautiful conversation.
I am forever thankful that there is such great content on the tube. thank you Lex :)
We have a DUTY to master the way we live life on this planet to the level that we have no human created reason to need to leave.
Time to pull out the plow, some traps, snares, fishing poles and start poaching the kings deer.
For the lay person to have access to “ casual convo “ with these two in truly a highlight of being alive today. These parasocial relationships give me a narcissistic feeling of being a smart tea pants
One of the most thoughtful interviews I've ever seen
we REALLY need to spread out into space - so that humans will be out there- who knows how far we could get? We must try!
Biggest obstacle is space travel speed.
Amazing interview and great Podcast!! Super Duper enjoyed!
As a fellow artist, this is a beautiful outlook. Thanks for keeping me inspired.
You are welcome,@@philtorrez4198. Thanks for making my day with your kind response!
Thank you both for an entertaining and mind-opening conversation
Keir Dullea, "Dave" from 2001: A Space Odyssey, was in a short-lived but imaginative Canadian show called The Starlost about a generation ship in which the communities living aboard in separate modules didn't know about one another. Some of the things you guys touched on were portrayed on the show. It's on the UA-cams
Great stuff as usual, Lex... Awesome. Thnx, again.
YES we MUST prevent the heat death of the universe if possible!! Man this guy, he's my kinda guy!
Great idea, but what Kardachev level of technology would that entail?
@@0neIntangible making stars or maybe massive blackholes to pull the universe back together again?
@@DeconvertedMan I've seen such proposals suggested watching SFIA (Science & Futurism with Isaac Arthur) on UA-cam...some really far out stuff.
@@0neIntangible who knows - but we have to get off this rock first.
One of your best podcasts, enjoyed it immensely!
10s if not hundreds of hours of video on the future of exploration of space.
in the future there is only war
Isaac needs to school Elon on the proper pronunciation of Maws.
Do you have ability to share how you contacted him?

@@williamnutile2929 if you go to his about section on his UA-cam page he has an email you could contact him. I’ve never spoken to him other than in comments on his videos but imagine a collab with you two would be great.
What an especially great episode!
Good show - owen

Anyone else not at all surprised that Lex takes HAL 9000's side?
Nearest hobby so glad I came across this podcast actually agree , I needed this podcast thanks🙌
I want to see the Passenger Pigeon, Great Auk and Ivory Billed Woodpecker brought back. We should make sure that the food and habitat are in place first.
Excellent interview thank you both 🙏
this podcast is one of my main inspirations at the moment, thank you so much Lex for such good content and for always inspiring us
Damn, I think that's my favourite episode every - gotta read that book for sure.
Pure science fiction pure fantasy good luck with that!
Great podcast! More of this please!
I'm calling it: Lex, Joe, and Elon will be floating around smoking a spliff in a dragon by '25.
Falcon IX my friend; although it is damn near synonymous with dragon.
@@Jake-Off-Grid Falcon 9 is the rocket. I’m talking about the capsule, Dragon.
Floating around. Where? People have been floating around on the Space Station,
wasting time , money and resources for more then 20 years... 250 miles up.....
Check that out on your 12 inch globe. Pretty much Nothing compared to visiting Mars.
Living on Mars is a Pipe Dream. Complete science fiction a this point.
We've may have done a lot of medical tests, on humans exposed to space, since Apollo.
But we have broken no barriers since then. Just more and more of the same.
@@reasonablespeculation3893 I agree with you that the ISS era has been a pit of stagnation. Have you read Mars Direct? I highly recommend Zubrin’s work, he talks about the decline in productivity from apollo era into shuttle and iss
Lex needs an overnight AM radio show!!
Yes! Got the book! Just read the look inside…awesome. Had to get it.
Excellent guest
I know right!
To say we are the first out of quintillion’s of planets is a bold statement.
Its mathmatically nearly impossible
Yea, that didn't sit well with me either.
What are UAP then lol , they’re not ours, someone is operating those craft.

Great interview
Lex take an interview with Michio Kaku again
A question I always (or almost always) wondered was how do you choose what world humans would first explore if and when travel to reaches beyond our solar system became possible. So many worlds!
"...and the clones that don't get a lot of likes on facebook can be quietly done away."
Wow. That's a dark sci-fi novel premise right there.
Lex Fridman brings genuine integrity back to reporting!
It's so refreshing!
Time for one really appreciate his podcasts.
Showing by example,
Let's hope he inspires others to do the same! 🤘🏼😎
