  • In this series of videos we take a closer look at some of my personal collection of fixed blade and folding knives.
    At the end of every episode, we rank the knife and give it an overall score out of 30 and graph the knife against the next so we can keep track of how the knives stack up against each other.
    In this episode we look at one of the highest scoring knives to date, the beautifully hand crafted M4 by Lionsteel. This knife features m390 steel, walnut handle slabs and a stunning hand crafted leather sheath.
    Check out the first four episodes of knife rank using the links down below.

    Is it even possible to sharpen m390 steel on a dc4 or is it just to hard

    • @freeroamsociety7301
      @freeroamsociety7301  3 роки тому

      If you are trying to re profile an edge, you’d be there for days, it’s a really hard steel to profile, but I had a slight burr I worked on with my dc4 while I was camping and it did the job until I got home, it wasn’t perfect but it was ok.

      @@freeroamsociety7301 thanks for your reply. So if I use the knife normally the dc4 is good an off the get the edge sharp again.

      @@Bamiblok 100%c, you’ll find with this knife you’ll very rarely need to re profile an edge back on it, the steel is that good (as long as you’re not abusing the knife that is), a quick touch up here and there and you’re good to go.

    I just bought a custom knife with m390 (7inch long). I heard that M390 tends to chip alot. Did you ever had chips on your m4? Thanks for help.

    • @freeroamsociety7301
      @freeroamsociety7301  2 роки тому +2

      Man, where did you get that from? Sounds like a knife I’d love to add to my collection.
      I haven’t had any issues with mine, but the added hardness of the steel does make it more susceptible to chipping. My advice, don’t be to abusive to it and you’ll be fine, it will do anything you put it to, but there’s a risk involved in it.

      It’s such a great steel, I’m still yet to put my m4 on a stone, I strop it and it’s good to go again.
      I’m biding my time until I can no longer reaist the m5, I think the m4 is limited by it’s size, but I 100% agree with you, the steel is what’s holding me back at the moment.

    I've got it with the green micarta. It's my daily carry and I sharpened it with the ts prof.
    At 15° I went from 120-12,000 grit.
    It is mirror edged and I have been using it for about 2 months now without resharpening.
    It will still shave my beard!

      @@freeroamsociety7301 I agree with you. I have quite a few knives and I have really enjoyed the m4.
      It's the right size, shape and materials.
      I also find the sheath to be convenient to use.
      I keep all of my knives fearfully sharp but it seems to just hold up well on the M4.
      Most knives have different uses and it's good to learn which but I believe I would have confidence in any Lionsteel knife made of M390.

      I feel that way with just about every knife I get. Buy a Ken onion worksharp with the grinder attachment and put a convex edge on it. That will take care of the thickness.

    The Best bushcraft knife is Mora,, I know Lionsteel is super nice 👍 but I can achieve same effect with my Mora Companion…Thick blade is not really good for fine carving and whittling plus the price is not consumer friendly..That’s just me,you can agree or disagree BTW I love knives and collecting them is highly addictive…Peace…
