As a few people have pointed out I accidentally said Cosmic Cyclone could "destroy" a backrow instead of "banish" a backrow. I think it's clear with context clues what I meant, but I wanted to leave this pinned comment just to clear things up!

Twin Twisters happened, yea. Like you said, TT essentially turns the worst card in your hand into a second MST if you need it, as opposed to having to draw two MST, so TT directly outclasses it in every situation as long as you can afford the discard. And if you can't, there's always Cosmic Cyclone.

I generally agree but in this specific meta that's just not true. Almost every deck searches some form of backrow on their first turn (prank kids fusion, floowanders trap+field, virtualworld trap, swordsoul trap, phantomknight trap, d/d/d trap and scythe of course). Thats why cosmic cyclone is super popular at the moment.
On top of that, many decks have combopieces that are continuous spells (pranks field, floowander field dragon ravine, bootsector, dark contracts, virtual world needs spell/traps as targets and of course the brave engine) so having single spell/trap removal going first feels really good.
And yes mst still sucks compared to its alternatives but it wouldn't feel too bad to play this format specifically.

The reason players favor Mst over Cosmic cyclone which funny enough came out first in duel links is due to the exclusion of the 1000 life point cost. Yep, Twin Twisters and Cosmic Cyclone happened. Sometimes the extra costs are even used as an advantage in certain decks. TT is especially nice in decks that like popping their own backrow cards.
In Master Duel I honestly prefer Twin Twisters over MST in my Striker deck because of the popping stuff he mentioned, and you can even use the discard to get 3 spells in grave all at once in some cases, not to mention the extra target comes in handy against set 5 pass shenanigans in some cases. I would prefer having a Cosmic Cyclone vs. Eldlich and Paleo shenanigans, but unless some form of sideboarding comes into play those cases aren't going to be often enough to make up for the backrow popping versatility. MST is still fine in Sky Strikers though, you might actually have the space for both/all 3 things if you're not overloaded on board breakers.

I was at my locals during the BOSH Sneakpeek when I would've been about 13 or 14. I remember it vividly cuz my brother pulled a Cydra Infinity and Pend Sorcerer and sold them to this one guy for $130. I still used MST over TT, even when there was a common, cheaper reprinting in Dinosmasher's Fury simply because as a broke middle schooler my decks were far too slow to be able to use discard effects without worrying about loss of card advantage. It also helped that TT was expensive initially and years of reprints made sure MST was like 50 cents.
I basically played it all the way until the end of MR3, and played it as far as the latter half of 2018 (only IRL though) because my decks would be "behind" as opposed to my online builds.
Ever since the release of Tornado Dragon however I don't main deck backrow removal, and I only side it in sometimes.

Additionally it serves its original purpose if needed, to get rid a backrow which in master duel I think is pretty valuable since you see a a good amount of backrow heavy decks.

Twin twisters is the best against decks that play multiple back row cards that don't have graveyard effects and MST is a good middle ground against decks that are in the middle of that that may just use one or two problematic continuous spells or traps. It's also the better option for popping your own cards over twin twisters or if you just don't want to discard a card in general.

In my first pack of Magic Ruler I ever bought, not too long after it was originally released, I got an Ultra Rare MST! I remember thinking the card was "pretty good" xD
I love how long its legacy is, and it's still one of my favorite cards to this day, even if it's been power crept.
Also, fun fact, the name was really embellished for English. It Japanese, it's simply the English language word "Cyclone"

Another thing is Lord of the Heavenly Prison protecting set back row from destruction in Trap heavy decks. Cyclone gets around that where MST and even Harpie’s Feather Duster cannot. Also there are cards that protect against destruction but not banishing. So while MST still sees unorthodox play, the main one is Cyclone.

I feel the mechanic of quick play spells in general has been powercreep by monster handtraps. I would really like that we didnt had to place quick play spell cards on the spell and card zones, if they updated the use of quick play spells to be from the hand like instant spells in magic the gathering, many old quick play spells could be very useful, and we could have many interesting new quick spells. Heck, we could even get quick play trap cards or even a updated effect for counter cards so we can use them from the hand. I mean, backrow cards still have a place in the game, but the game has evolved, we could have magic and trap handtraps with weaker effects, and normal backrow cards with stronger effects to make up for the fact of how easy is to destroy backrow. Mostly, they could have a boost in the cost-benefit of having spell/traps in the backrow, because they will be easier to destroy, but with stronger effects. (Well, this is already true for cards like solemn strike)

I play madolche so I opt for twin twisters instead because the discard is more resources for me but I do side deck 2 copies of both mst and cyclone to deal with backrow heavy decks and give me options incase my opponent is burning me, as measly of a cost as 1000 lp is it can be the entire difference between a loss or a win, not that burn decks are particularly common though

My reasons to play backrow removal these days is either to emergency destroy my Odd-eyes (+ Arc on the other scale) or to get rid of floodgates (Unending Nightmare is my card of choice... I know, weird one)
MST goes tie to tie with the game state, no wonder why Droplet cost so much, and why unlike broken or from that deck, traps fell out of favor
I grew fond to MST cause I played Dawn of Destiny a lot, and taking care of those primitive floodgates were so useful
So in short... I don't even play TCG, but on digital, yeah, I have MST (from UR on Duel links to R on Master Duel) cause it has been helpful from time to time

Also, can you talk about which duelists should be chosen for support in the upcoming “Duelist Pack: Duelists of Pyroxene“ set? My money is on Gong for sure (it’s been quite some time since the Superheavy Samurai got well….anything), either Earth or Sergi (either one of the decks he used would be good), and the Gore (again either one of his decks would work)!

Cosmic Cyclone is really good in MD right now, I'd say it's only truly useless against Adamancipators and against TriZoo it's just basic backrow removal for getting rid of Revolt and also stopping the Tenki search. But all the other popular ranked ladder decks have areas where Cosmic really hurts them; Eldlich should go without saying, banishing their backrow really hurts them and VW has their continuous spells/traps that have GY effects too.
Drytron is where CC really differentiates itself from the other generic backrow removal though. Backrow removal that destroys is totally useless against Drytron, but Cosmic can banish Meteonis Drytron (which is often only ran at 1) which prevents them from ritual summoning for the rest of the duel.

  • @ultrainstinctgokublack9097
    @ultrainstinctgokublack9097 2 роки тому

I tend to main deck 1-3 (normally 2: HFD/TT) backrow removal cards and side some for a total of 3>5. MST still has a good niche in decks that cannot afford a discard/LP cost but I've pretty much cut it from all my competitive builds as Harpies feather duster is at1 (I don't own lightening storm). In some builds where I don't want to see multiples of TT I'll play 1 CC with 1 HFD and if I feel I need the LP and i'm not really going up against in GY effect backrow I might just cut the CC. Also when getting punished by a responsive backrow when using TT/CC it can end up costing me games thanks to the loss of a card in hand/1k LP that I lost for nothing so I quite often would run 1 MST in my side deck and sometimes I still do but as a 5th backrow removal now. Before we had HFD at 1 I'd always side an MST.

MST is still played, because a destryed spell/trap is still a destroyed spell trap. That's why heavy storm is still banned, it's not just removal, it's also a way to trigger floating effects. Most people running backrow removal don't need to make their cards float, so that's why they run removal that would hurt the opponent more than enable their plays. Some examples of decks that DO use MST:Sky striker
    Virtual World

My mans you gotta use the word Opportunity Cost. When discussing cards, the cost of a spot's potential is burned by say it being occupied by the MST against a deck with limited back row. Contrast it then against something like Twin Twisters where you have double removal, functionally two MSTs with the potential to sack a brick for the second back row, *and* the added benefit of a card in your deck swapped with MST for another useful card.
