      Me2. I rode my bike hard for 4 years....mma...etc.....
      Im 6 months in.....some days are bad...im poor...single dad...alot of other bullshit..... Im not giving up. I try to stretch daily and want to get a job so I can live my life properly and ultimately pay for some good physio. Its a shame its so expensive and no governments want to subsidize the industry but will subsidize pills in a heartbeat

    If you felt a sudden pop and pain in the hamstring then it is most likley a hamstring strain. Any back pain you are faaling may be due to tightness in the hamstrings which pull on the pelvis and affect the aligment of the lower back. Rest the hamstrings and stretch them several times a day. Get some massage treatment too and see how it feels

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +8

    @MultiViceversa Repeated hamstring strains tend to be due to weakness in the scar. This can be improved through strengthening, but also massage which helps re-align the scar tissue. Also consider your core stability - needs to be strong to have a solid base for the hamstrings to attach to

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +1

    Yes, you need to have some time off completely to allow it to heal properly. Also lots of stretching, sports massage and then a gradual strengthening programme

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +1

    Yes we do think it is worth wearing something like this but it needs to be made of neoprene which is a heat retaining material which will help to keep the muscles more flexible and so reduce the risk of injury. Compression shorts are a good option as they will cover the entire area and not slip down when exercising

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  11 років тому +3

    You need to treat it thoroughly with stretching, massage and strengthening. Work through a strengthening program from isometric (static contractions), to resisted exercises like hamstring curl, to eccentric exercises like a Nordic hamstring exercise. Then start to increase running speed once hamstring strength is equal to the other leg and you can do all of these exercises pain free

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +4

    @hellraisersteve A gradual increase with no sprining or change in direction. More specific strengthening of the hamstrings too - so knee curls and hip extension exercises. As well as lots of stretching.

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +3

    Sports massage can be really helpful for hamstring strain treatment to improve the quality of the scar and stretch out the fibres. This should be done in conjunction with a stretching and strengthening programme. A small amount of discomfort when stretching is quite common, but don't push it into pain.
    Protein does help with muscle healing, however you should be able to get enough in your normal diet unless you are restricted in meat and egg intake for any reason!

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +2

    Hamstring strengthening work is important, as is getting back to full flexibility. I wouldn't worry too much about the things you mention. They won't make much of a difference

  • @Progress_or_Barbarism
    @Progress_or_Barbarism 12 років тому +3

    @sportsinjuryclinic Yeah, today it have been a week, and I feel pretty good. Now, I still feel something when I jog though. Another thing, there was no bruising appearance after the pull, so I hope for another week of healing and I will be fine. Thank you. :)

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +2

    @jfp284 Hamstring strains must be treated thoroughly or they will easily come back. This should include rest, stretching, massage and strengthening exercises. If you have done all of this, have you considered that it isn't an actual hamstring injury and that it may be referred pain from the lower back or buttocks?

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +1

    Not necessarily. Hamstring strains are common in footballers, even professisonal players, but they usually return without a loss of speed. You just need to make sure you get it treated appropriately.

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +4

    Follow the advice given by your physio andkeep gradually working on building flexibility and strength in the hamstrings. Also don't go back to full sprinting too early or you will only be out for longer with another, potentially worse, tear.

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  11 років тому +1

    Yes absolutely. Whichever sport you play it will take about the same length of time to heal

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому

    If it has happened three times you need to get some professional treatment. This usually involves massage and electrotherapy to improve muscle condition and realign scar tissue, as well as a comprehensive strengthening/stretching plan.

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому +1

    Yes, provided there is no pain when jogging, twisting and eccentric contractions. Just gradually build the speed

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  11 років тому +9

    Start gentle stretching of the muscle. Get some sports massage to help with flexibility and scar tissue alignment and then start strengthening exercises. Start with reverse straight leg raises and make them gradually harder. Then start running and gradually pick up speed

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  11 років тому +8

    You should go to see a Doctor or even better a Physio or sports therapist etc for an assessment. It might be muscular, but you should also get checked for neurological (nerve) involvement.

    Hello Mister Neal,
    can you please give us the classification of lesions in muscles injuries,
    I graduated from Physio college, and I have learned that there are 3 grades,
    But when I started working doctors are giving me another type of nomenclature, like elongation, claquage, and some doctors classify it like 1- elongation 2- first degree ( few fibres touched ) 3- second degree ( many fibres are touched ) 4- third degree ( full rupture )
    Thank you !

    Mine is fine, just a mild hamstring strain/grade 1, its just that it keeps going back. Like in training, if I'm warmed up properly I can do any splits, high kicks, any skill that involves flexibility without feeling any pain. If not or I rushed the warm up, slight intense pain occurs. I'm afraid of loosing my flexibility, I can actually do splits before without warm up but now I have to. Maybe my biggest mistake is not giving treatment for the first 3 weeks, esp. not doing the ice thing.

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  11 років тому

    If it is still the painful after 9 weeks then either it was a severe tear (indicated by bruising / swelling etc) or it wasn't a hamstring strain at all. It could be sciatic pain referred from the lower back or buttocks. Either way I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist

    Planning to do that over the next 5 - 10 days just to gauge how the hamstring coming along. Am not sure if I will be fit for 4 weeks time though am staying positive.

    I had a horrible grade 2 hamstring injury April 2011 playing soccer, i would rest for about 3 weeks, then after it felt okay to me i would go out and play and re injure it. It was on and off until September 2011, then i was great. Now, i feel little twinges here and there (grade 1's) ever since january. I need to incorporate Hamstring curls in my workouts, i feel like my quads are overdeveloped

    I recently graduated high school, i am 16 years old and i was on my cheer team, i was pretty flexible, able to do heal stretches, splits, flips, & scorpions, etc. well we were having pics done for yearbook, and i went down to my splits, and heard a pop type sound, every since then i cant to ANY type of cheer moves EXCEPT for tumbling, but if i land a flip on my leg the wrong way, i feel a sharp pain! This injury happened in January before a game, and still hurts!! HELP ?!?!

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet
    @SportsinjuryclinicNet  12 років тому

    @FootyKing2010 You should get some professional tratment on it. This is the fastest way to get it back to normal. You definitely shouldn't be training as any sprinting or sudden changes in direction etc can cause further injury. Jogging is usually pain-free so if you feel by sunday that this is comfortable then you may be ok.

    Thank you for your insight- I took a spill while on a run a few days ago and really pulled my hamstring. It was so painful for the first 30 minutes that I had to wait for my partner to run home and get the car. I've been icing the area, taking anti-inflammatory meds. I do feel better, but it’s still a bit tender. Do you recommend foam rollers to help message the muscle?

  • @SportsinjuryclinicNet

    You need to get some professional treament on it to help remodel the scar tissue and improve its tensile strength to stop it from going everytime you stress the muscle.

    In the middle of January I was practicing my over splits. So I wanted to get a really good stretch, so I put a stepping stool under my foot and went all the way down. (I knew I wouldn't actually be able to get my butt to the ground) So I was pushing my hips towards the ground to get that deep stretch, then a a sudden pain came where I THINK is the hamstring (upper thigh, really close to the buttcheek). I came out of over splits and went into normal splits, still hurt. It affected my walking a little for the next two days, but only a teeny bit because it hurt to put a lot of pressure on that leg. Now it is late April, I have of course lost my splits, my bad leg is way better than my good, and if I stretch and try to go down it hurts a little teeny bitty bit. I know this is a question for my doctor or something, but can anyone tell me if it is a strain, pull, or tear, and if it is a grade 1, 2, or 3? I'm really scared 😭

    I had a grade 2 strain in my right hamstring about 5 years ago and since then have pulled it several times since then. Recently about a few months a go a strained it a gain after about a year of no problems with it. I tried taking time off and started playing again after about a month and pulled it again. After this I took some more time off and thought i was okay to play and ended up pulling it again. This is the third time in 3 months. What can I do so that this doesnt happen anymore?

    If there is pain actually in the buttock then it is unlikely to actually be a hamstring strain. It is more likely sciatica - maybe something like piriformis syndrome

    I've been struggling with hamstrings injuries the last 3-4 years. I've got injured about 5 times in these years, mostly a second grade pull.
    Im 21 years old, and this time I need to be more serious about the recovery training.
    So a week ago I pulled it again. I went running yesterday, and I could run 50-60% without any pain. How should I continue my recovery now? How should my training program be? I would like some exercises which I can do at home, without any equipment. Thanks.

    it didn't hurt much (or may because I have high pain tolerance) so I continued training anyway, but I can't extend up to my toes now on my left leg
    it doesn't hurt when I jog or kick (Muay Thai), only hurts when I extend towards my toes, affects my flexibility though :(

    should I worry? "I think" it's taking too long :(

    Sounds good, continue gentle jogging but get some more massage and try gentle strengthening exercises to build the strength back up

    I have pulled my hamstring 5 days from Tuesday, March 6, 2012. So, my school trainer told me that I could be possibly running on Thursday or Friday, March 8th or 9th. Now, should I run or sprint on those dates? I dont feel that my hamstring will be fully healed. Thank you.

    Hello, i hurt my hamstring about two month ago spring during soccer practice. I felt better to play within two weeks, but unfortunately i popped it again, but this time i felt a lump. After a month of stretching and heat to the wounded area, i felt about 80 percent to play, i went out to play, but unfortunately hurt it once again, but there was no pop in the hamstring, i felt it was a very mild strain. I still feel the lump, What do you suggest i do to heal this? Im sorry for not being so clear
