I saw him every time he passed through Atlanta on tour from 1978 when i was in high school until he passed away and met him backstage 3times he was larger than life for a young trumpet player I still revere him to this day and I'm 61 now
My dad and his brother grew up with Maynard in Montreal in the 1930 era. My uncle was a piano player. I enjoyed your memories re travelling with the band Thanks

I saw Maynard and the band (don't know if you were drumming) in Farmington New Mexico the night of April 22, 1997 for the amazing ticket price of only $10! I got to shake the Master's hand and get his autograph too. One of the best experiences of my life!
Awesome story. I seen Maynard with my son(a screaming trumpet player) in 98-99 I think. He had killer trumpet in band. He didn't play as much as he did 10 yrs earlier, but when he did, OMG the power,sound and range was a thrill. My son said man you can tell he's played over 60 yrs. When Maynard passed the magic left. Yeah bro....the power he had was astounding. From what I understand about trumpet Maynard was kind of a freak of nature. The embouchure he was somehow born with. Thats probably why there will never be another like him. ;-)

@@philmaturanodrums OK, Phil saw that and very interesting insights. If I was a drummer, and not a saxophone player I’d join your class! but I still wonder WHEN while touring. You are on the bandstand or in a bus, when do you get a chance to practice bang or blow
@@jwmc41 Well there are so many factors. On a tour like Maynards where you have to play your butt off every night....giving the body and ears a rest becomes essential. So personally from the drum chair I only warmed up for about 1/2 hour before hitting. The key is to make practice a long term issue and something that wont change your life if you only perform for a few months at a time. Know what I mean?

Hi Leslie. And thank you for writing. I feel that you are correct unfortunately. Big band drumming has become a very rare skill. Anything that is done largely for artistic purposes seems to head for obscurity. A sad commentary on current culture. I must say though that the art form in general is much more respected where drumming is a deep part of the culture. Cuba Brazil etc. I feel the USA is not a place for great drumming anymore. The small percentage of players that are great there are on a top level for sure. But in general the average person has lost the deep connection to drumming. So we plug away and do our best. @@philmaturanodrums Thanks for getting back with me. I remember seeing Maynard back in 1973 at a local high school. The band smoked! The drummer, at the time, was Danny D'imperio. He didn't have a drum throne -- he literally sat on his trap case with no cushion. He also played on a modest Ringo Starr set, complete with Evans Blue-X heads and two cymbals. He was on fire! After the show, I was able to talk to him backstage, and asked him [in my youthful enthusiasm] to compare Buddy Rich to Tony Williams. He quickly responded, "Tony Williams makes Buddy Rich look like a parade drummer." I thought it was a funny story. Lol.
What a story behind the "engine" that drove the band itself!! Your solo on Caravan at about 10:15 bought tears of joy to me!! Wonderful insights into your days with the one,the only Maynard Ferguson!!

I'm English, I live in UK. I saw / heard, Maynard big Band ( all local UK, musicians) at Club 43, Manchester UK, 1960's I believe Maynard, lived in the area at that time. Sorry for being boringly nostalgic. Anyway, Peace to all.
In 1967 or 68 I saw Maynard & his Big Band play in Dublin. Fantastic to hear him play at the height of his power. Unforgettable evening. His drummer that evening was Randy Jones who later played for many years with Dave Brubeck
The versatility and drumming level of this gentleman is really something. Should have more more récognition. And a real maestro in afro cuban drumming. As good as Mark Walker, Lucas Van Merwijk, El Negro, Robbie Ameen and so on...
Good question haha. I think its a good feeling to be able to put your name out there and have people play their ass off for you when the time comes. Every show is your name and reputation. So our wins were also his. Know what I mean? So I am sure he was happy when we all played well.
Enjoyed this very much. I saw Maynard in Boyne City, MI. I cannot recall what year it was. Probably in the 90's. I went with my Dad. He and Maynard are both gone now. I still listen to Maynard music a lot. MF Horn 1 is one of my top five records of all time!

Good question haha. I think its a good feeling to be able to put your name out there and have people play their ass off for you when the time comes. Every show is your name and reputation. So our wins were also his. Know what I mean? So I am sure he was happy when we all played well.

Enjoyed this very much. I saw Maynard in Boyne City, MI. I cannot recall what year it was. Probably in the 90's. I went with my Dad. He and Maynard are both gone now. I still listen to Maynard music a lot. MF Horn 1 is one of my top five records of all time!
