  • From my collection of off-the-air recordings that I made on VHS cassettes, the Mills Brothers sing "Tiger Rag", one of their biggest and earliest hits, accompanied by a big jazz band on a program called "Big Bands". This performance, which I recorded off the air in 1987 (but most likely was taped in the mid 1970's), was part of a PBS fundraiser, hosted by John Davidson. In a fantasy, Davidson demonstrates to a ghost of Thomas Edison some of the music recorded by big bands using Edison's invention of the phonograph. I was toying with editing that bit out but decided to keep it in (for John Davidson fans.) The Brothers recorded this Original Dixieland "Jass" Band tune in 1931. John Jr., the original fourth member of the group, imitated a bass instrument and played rhythm guitar. He died at the age of 25 and was replaced by John Sr. In 1956, John Sr. stopped touring with the group. If you'd like to see and hear how the original quartet performed "Tiger Rag", you can go to my post of their appearance in the 1932 film, "The Big Broadcast": • The Mills Brothers T...

A big big thank you for taking the trouble to find and post such rare gems. I learned about the mills brothers on UA-cam. They have not been too popular here in the German speaking countries - what a pity!
I now browse eBay for their LP‘s :)

Thanks for your time and efforts to get this stuff posted. I'm just 59, now, but I still remember seeing these guys on the occasional variety show on TV growing up. And of course, these guys, and so many talented others were relentlessly aped in Looney Tunes, which had the effect of extending their influence on my generation (late Boomer).
You simply had to be talented to make it in show business back before the Internet democratized entertainment into mere amusement.

No, it's not 1987, it's probably 1975, the year Harry started to lose his sight. It's very sad because we see him extinct on this video, he who has always been happy.
It is possible that he was still seeing a little, because he seemed focused to fix his brothers, and Herbert looked at him for a moment smiling.
It's an interesting video, we see the transition between the early 1970s and the late 1970s for Harry, who changed a lot between 1974 and 1976.
Harry Mills died on June 28, 1982.
It's a very rare video, it's the first time it's on youtube. Thank you so much. If you have others on the Mills Brothers, could you publish them?
It was a wonderful group, the best band ever, followed by Beach Boys.

Would you believe 1978? I checked my handwritten log and it says 1978, which is the year I recorded the performance, not necessarily the year it was performed. I probably just transposed the 7 and the 8 when I posted the clip. (I made a similar error on my 2019 income tax return and had to refile.) However, after reading your very helpful comment, and also checking Wikipedia's article on the Brothers, even 1978 seems too late. I'm going to modify the title and description above. If the program that aired this performance was a PBS fundraiser, it might have been a repeat. They certainly have been known to do that. As for your question of whether I have more recordings of the Mills Brothers, I posted "Tiger Rag" from the 1932 film "The Big Broadcast", as I mentioned in my description. I have well over 200 VHS cassettes in my attic of all types of material that I recorded from 1980 until I got my first DVR; and, I'm trying to take advantage of the current sheltering situation to find more gems to share before I'm no longer able to do so. I can't tell you how gratifying it is to know that there are people out there like yourself who let me know that they appreciate my efforts. Thank you very much.

    I love this group!
Obviously the tiger has grown a bit older in the meantime...
    Compare with this:

And it's a shame that the guitar is always at the back...
