I use the Bontrager XR2’s on my Trek Stache 29 Plus bike & they have a very similar tread pattern & I agree with all your points. They’re awesome tires in all conditions, would like a little more bite in the snow but they’re manageable. You get amazing grip in normal conditions & can really rail & lean the bike over with confidence, I tell everyone how good these tires are. I just purchased a full suspension & am loving the Cush, Fat Bike is next on my wish list, can’t wait to get one!

The 7 has front suspension & looks perfect out of the box but it’s 35 lbs, $3,400. the 9.6 is only 28 lbs but rigid, a Lauf fork would be bad ass but I’d be spending well over $5,000 again. I love high end bikes but is it necessary for a fat bike? Is front suspension necessary? Give me your honest opinion, also what brand Fatty do you like, I don’t have to go with Trek

Full carbon frame and fairly inexpensive. Maybe you could build one up? I paired mine with those Nextie Carbon rims and got my bike around 29 lbs.
I have these on my Salsa Bucksaw where they see mostly bike park trails. I run them with tubes. They grip quite well. I pretend I'm driving a tank cycle.😊
Hey Sage, just found your channel and loving the content. Total newbie to the world of fatbike although not to trails. What are your thoughts on the JJ for sand? I have a multi day desert crossing in Feb and the fatbike I am using comes with Vee Snow Avalanche which I understand will be far too aggressive for the soft stuff. JJ keeps coming up as a go to option (and seemingly cheap here in the UK at the mo!). Any insight greatly appreciated, keep shredding man.
Hey Ryan, I wish I could give you better advice, but I have no idea how they would preform in that kind of setting. They do come in a wider option so if you think that would help more I would certainly give them a shot. Also thank you for the kind words!
Great review, I’ve been running JJs for about 10 years and ride mainly sand dunes and beach and singletrack. They’re great in the summertime but they are treacherous in the winter on anything wet, muddy, greasy or slippy especially rock and roots and they’ve nearly killed me. They are great except for those winter conditions where I run a surly Edna on the front end and a jumbo on the rear as long as it’s not muddy
Right on! And yes, I would agree, the JJs are not that great in thick snow or muddy conditions. They are more of a all-around good fat bike tire. Thank you for the feedback and comment. Sage
Absolutely Todd. I just rode the fatty yesterday at Mt Penn. They are great for riding all year round. The only issue is with deep snow, the lugs are just not robust enough.

Great question, I have run both the Husker and Vanhelga by 45NRTH. I would say it the JJs offer the same amount of traction at the Husker, but they are way lighter. Hope that helps.

Jumbo Jim are the best. I was so slow with the normal tires from my fat bike, but when I put the Schwalbe Jumbo Jim on it, WOW. I can reach 45 even 50 km/h on the streets with my non electric fat bike. Awesome....
I’m considering building up a “lightweight” Ice Cream Truck for year round non-snow riding. My concern is the tpi of 127 of these tires. I tried 120 tpi Maxxis tires and got more punctures on AZ and NM trails. With 60 tpi I’ve never flatted over many 1000’s of miles.
I hear ya Larry. Without knowing where or how you ride it's hard for me to advise you. They are def one of the lightest tires on the market though, and they haven't flatted that much for me, and my terrain is pretty chunky here on the east coast. If you want to know where I ride check out some of my "Just Ride" POV videos. That may give you an idea for the kind of abuse I put my bikes/tires through.
@@TrailSage Thanks for the quick response. I saw you road the 50 year trail which is what I cut my teeth on 25 years ago. I’m just an XC rider, nothing crazy, no air, but the rocks can be unforgiving at times. I was surprised on how some of the “pointy” rocks could cause a puncture. But never a problem with 60 tpi. I don’t even carry a spare tube anymore but got to love the weight of those JJ’s.
@@schadlarry Yeah, you have some sharp rocks in AZ! I would hate for you to make an investment on the JJ only to have it flat. I will say, I have had really good luck with the Stans DART. I still carry a light weight tube, but the DART has saved me every time. Let me know what you decide Larry.
Agreed, I’ve used a pair of these for like 5 years in all conditions. They perform exactly as you said. I just got a pair of 4.8 - because it’s been impossible to fin 26” tires at least here in Canada. It’s like 27.5 took over, and e-bike low treads seem to be all there is. I just got lucky, a guy sold me his which he swapped out immediately when he bought his bike. Any suggestions where to buy a set?
Right on Marc. How do you like the 4.8s? As for where to buy, I usually just purchase directly from Schwalbe. But I'm sure there are better deals out there, especially with the holidays coming up.
@@TrailSage I literally put them on my bike yesterday. I used to ride the snow, but I’m too busy skiing now, and will wait till next summer. Schwalbe is sold out of all sizes of Jumbo Jim’s according to the website. Maybe because we are now entering winter? Long story short story used to commute to work mostly all trail… but that bit of salt I did hit destroyed my brakes, and a hub. Then I had bad luck with my aluminum Norco Sight frame (a defect, but beyond the warranty), so transferred all the components from the Norco to my Felt Fat bike, and had a TON of fun in the summer. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a regular mountain bike again. So much simpler to maintain, and fun! I’m not “sending it” on crazy mostly flowy single track, and a bit of chunky, but nothing extreme. So I think the 4.8 with a higher pressure should be fun.

I've been running JJ's for a couple years now and love them. I'm not saying they're the best fat tire out there but I stopped looking after I tried them. From dry summer conditions to packed snow I haven't found anything that I like better. Once you find the sweet spot for your tire pressures they roll great, grip like mad and don't self steer at all. I use the Snakeskin version for extra puncture protection on janky trails.

I did my first ever MTB ride at the Frederick Watershed 14 yrs ago so it was cool to see that on your video. You did a good job of capturing how challenging the riding is there. It doesn't always come through on video. I used to ride Michaux a lot too before moving near Pittsburgh. There's good riding here but you have to drive a bit to find chunk.

@@keyno1212 I weigh about 215 geared up on a Surly Wednesday, 26x4.4 on 80mm rim. To figure out my pressures, I started with both at about 10 PSI, then just let a little bit of air out at a time until they stopped feeling bouncy but also weren't rolling over in the corners. On dirt and packed snow I like 5.5 psi in front, 7.5 in back. On softer snow I'll let air out until the sidewalls start to wrinkle.

Thanks Gill, and great question. No, you only need spiked tires for icy or hard packed snow. Most of the time your standard fat tire would be fine.

How do you find the snow performance of the JJ's?
Hey Bobby, if you let some pressure out the JJ will be fine, but if you ride primarily in deep snow I would opt for a tire with bigger lugs.

@@TrailSage Yeah the VH is a great tire too. I heard about your channel on the Jeff Lenosky Holbert Trail video & checked you out since he mentioned you're an east coast guy. I did my first ever MTB ride at the Frederick Watershed 14 yrs ago so it was cool to see that on your video. You did a good job of capturing how challenging the riding is there. It doesn't always come through on video. I used to ride Michaux a lot too before moving near Pittsburgh. There's good riding here but you have to drive a bit to find chunk.

whats your sweet spot for psi?
@@keyno1212 I weigh about 215 geared up on a Surly Wednesday, 26x4.4 on 80mm rim. To figure out my pressures, I started with both at about 10 PSI, then just let a little bit of air out at a time until they stopped feeling bouncy but also weren't rolling over in the corners. On dirt and packed snow I like 5.5 psi in front, 7.5 in back. On softer snow I'll let air out until the sidewalls start to wrinkle.
