- Ruaidhri O'Connor joins Luke Fitzgerald and Will Slattery to reflect on Ireland's famous win over South Africa on the latest episode of The Left Wing podcast.
Ciaran Frawley was the hero with a late drop goal and once again his future at Leinster is a big topic of discussion.
The lads break down Ireland's stellar first half, South Africa's comeback and the key role Andy Farrell played in the victory.
Let's face it, Andy Farrell is consistently making the Leinster coaching staff look like absolute spoofers.
The performance of Frawley has reflected poorly on Cullen
@@paddy91317 This shouldn’t be about Leinster. Ireland won and Leinster for as far as Munster did in the provinces.
For the longest time I've been waiting for all of this to inevitably unravel on us; for this golden age of Irish rugby to shatter into a million pieces and be relegated to the "good old days", similar to how the Welsh look back to their better times with a funny mixture of fondness and heartache.
But this team is constantly pushing those good old days further and further into the future. Long may it last!
Ireland are consistently in the top 2 or 3 sides in world rugby now and have the full respect of the SH giants- SA and NZ. I don't see that changing anytime soon. They've been building for the last 25 years or so. Everything changed in Ireland a few short years after rugby went pro. In the amateur days, Ireland were wooden spoon favourites most years. With each change of coach from Gatland to EOS to Kidney to Schmidt to Farrell. They've improved with each coach.
Ireland are by far the most improved 1st tier nation since rugby went pro.
Luke is basking in the glow of being vindicated on Frawley, and rightly so. Even more impressive than the drop goals was the risky but perfectly weighted grubber that won Ireland crucial territory.
Farrell saw his potential ages ago, the smart fans and pundits saw it too. The only person who hasn't so far is Leo Cullen. Will the penny finally drop next season?
In fairness to Leo, he used Frawley in the same way Vs Toulouse as Farrel did here, only that the drop goals came off this time. And yeah you could argue that Leo might not have brought Frawley on had Ross not gotten injured. Anyway I agree he should be given a proper run at 10 at Leinster and should be helped to develop into the role in whatever ways he needs to.
@@redmondo42 pathetic-this is meant to be about Ireland, not Leinster-he should be dropped like the players he mentions-he’s far too biased-Leinster are not Ireland-look at the players that save them from the other provinces. Leinster can’t win shit on their own, so stop having a podcast about Ireland and just talking about Leinster-Luke Fitz should be dropped.
How is it that the national coach can see what the Leinster coach can't? Not just in 1 position, but 2. Still no signs of any pressure on Leo
I think Farrell is In a different class to Leo. Also there’s politics in Leinster selections.
@@johnmc3862 no there is not
Loan him to Ulster, last year we had to play a scrum half at 10 while Frawley sat on the bench. Disgusting use of resources by the provinces.
@@JohnSmith-wo2fz That’s Leinsteir’s fault. Stop taking away from the itgevorovinces. Remember Crowley got a drop goal to beat Leinster in the last URC. Stop being so biased. He came in after Crowley laid the foundations for him and could have been shit otherwise. Get over yourselves.
We need Nathan Doak to develop into the next Conor Murray. We also need him to be able to cover fly half if required. We need that within 3 years. I agree one of Leinster's excesses needs to go up to Ulster. Ideally Ross Byrne as we need Frawley to practise his kicking and there's no way Cooney is being replaced in that regard. Ye didn't help the situation by bringing in that kiwi but by next summer I think Cullen's hand will be forced.
All this talk of “Irelands biggest ever win”.
It wasn’t, the biggest win in my lifetime was Cardiff 2009. People have completely forgotten what a big deal that was. I was driving home to watch a few minutes before kick off and there wasn’t a soul on the streets of cork city.
It was the beginning of Ireland being a team that actually wins things
you're totally right, 58 years since a grand slam i think it was.
Humphreys has to have a conversation with Cullen about this no doubt. If Crowley goes down for Ireland, Frawley is next man up. Just setting him up to fail if he’s getting no consistent reps at 10. Also having Crowley and Frawley pushing each other is best for the team
Did you see Crowley hugging Frawley after the game?
@@deirdreryan5674 Yes doesn’t need to be a toxic rivalry between them can be like Ford and Farrrell for England pushing each other on
@@eoinh3816 maybe stop putting Crowley out Leinster fans-he’s way better than Frawley and let’s remember who beat Leinster in the URC last year with Crowley’s drop kick. Stop making such a big deal of Frawley, just because he’s Leinster. He needs to move to another provenience the way things are going.
I'm a Proud Springbok Supporter so sad we lost by 1 point in the 80th but Credit to Ireland they pushed the Back to Back World Champions close well done
Don’t reduce it to one point… your current world championship was built on multiple one point wins. You also couldn’t even score tries
But we could win a quarter final😊
@@getridofneocons come up with something original… you just lost.. with your most experienced team … with no tries… kind of shows how you aren’t worthy champions
You drew a series and that now makes you world champions. World champions win matches when it really matters....Ireland won a series in NZ and crowed about it for years...we are all heard about it at nauseam....and guess who knocked Ireland out of a quater final....in case you forgot NEW ZEALAND. NZ and SA are world champions...Ireland arent world champions yet. Have some humility and stop being an embarassment to irish fans @@SmcdMcd-d2k
@@happybru4757 you got beat in your own back yard with your most experienced team with no tries… why don’t you have some humility
Frawley needs at least a full season of first team rugby at 10 end of story...
in 2023/24 Crowley has played 33 games at 10, starting in 27 matches, with 239 total points scored
I recall lions players saying they would run through brick walls for Willie John McBride, its impossible to pinpoint what it is, but Farrell has that, he is so diplomatic and relaxed in press conferences, he 'must' be a different beast when with the players, hard as nails as a player and inspirational as a coach.
What would people like to see this season at Leinster?
-Frawley as starting 10 with Prendergast as backup? Or vice versa?
-Ross and Harry to cover the games when Frawley and Prendergast are away with national team, and then one or both of the Byrnes to move abroad or to another province the season after?
Not that complicated and feels like they really have to give this a try. Ross was given his chance this season and last and didn't really deliver in the end.
This is meant to be about Ireland, not Leinster
The provinces and national team are integrally linked, esp Leinster-Ireland, whether you like it or not. And Frawley's future with Leinster has a bearing on his future with the national team so it's a relevant discussion.
If Leinster are wondering why their players are better with Ireland, they should look to themselves and their coaching staff. Andy Farrell is making them look stupid.
Why is Luke incapable of letting anyone finish a sentence. Great podcast, just annoying listening to someone interrupting people so often
Frawley will never get a shot at Leinster because as it stands, Byrne makes less mistakes, even if his upper level is far below. Mistakes cost Leinster home quarters and semis which fund the whole operation. If rugby was the focus here we Leinster fans would have the privilege of seeing Frawley grow as a player into a world class operator but alas I just don`t think it`s going to happen. His best option would be Ulster or trying to broker some Sexton like special arrangement with Farrell/the IRFU to go to England or France while still being in contention.
Frawley doesn’t make that many mistakes. His overall skill set, would outweigh Byrnes contributions in my view. Byrnes goes lost in games. He is almost always relying on the brilliance of the players around him. He has also made mistakes in big games.
I saw Frawley’s potential back 5/6 years ago in Lansdowne Road when he played sub to Sexton. He was brilliant.
Unfortunately Leo Cullen is just NOT the man. He couldn't even decide who was Captain. He went this Co Captains nonsense. And got the players into to trouble with the Ref cause He wasn't having any of this rubbish. Same with this Rotation stuff. Just not good enough.
Barry McGann had more pace than Ross Byrne and he can’t take it to the line. Badly showed this in his last few games.
Been a while since I heard Barry McGann's name. I think he was the first out-half that I remember playing for Ireland. Great with boot but not a speedster for sure.
Far too Leinster focused-should it be the Leinster Wing?
It is South Dublin you see!
@@tomgreene1843 no I don't see?
Me neither. Ireland isn’t Ireland without all players. Frawley got the drop goals after Crowley set him up. McCloskey was excellent. Izzy needs a chance. Sam Prendergast needs a go too. This is far too biased for Leinster. All Leinster boys. Change it up!
Ross Byrne is far too slow, both in thought and pace. Needs to take it to the line as a 10 nowadays at this level. And it’s clear from his break in Croke Park, when my 12 year old could have caught him, that he can’t contribute to general play as a rugby player.
Man of match v La Rochelle
When you get to games where Leinster aren't overwhelming favourites and just using the ability of players around him isn't enough, that's when Ross Byrne is exposed as a limited player.
Look at Dupont and Ntamack in big games they create big moments, and they stap themselves on the game. Ross Byrne can just about hold on never mind making a difference.
@@grahamshaw3802 yes, that’s the simple version.
If you don’t look behind the complete aggression of an armchair ride; and, a spent LR side, as evidenced since. Nice game from Ross, but he was supporting cast, don’t listen to the hype machine
Thanks men. This was a very entertaining conversation. God bless you all.
Irish haters haven’t arrived in the comments yet😮
Totally agree with Ruaid on the Byrne Frawley situation!
I love it when you guys express different points of view. 👍
53:07 I have to laugh at the conviction with which these guys find Leinster not picking Frawley as “bizarre”. None of these guys were saying this last week.

If Leinster don’t play him…. He will still stay and keep picking up the money like many many others before like Ruddock, Deegan, Scott penny and of course Hazza Byrne and so on so forth
They would get better money if they left . They are proud Leinster players came through the ranks and hope and believe they can make team or close
There is a gap between what Neinaber is trying to achieve and what Farrell is trying to achieve. There needs to be less dissonance at the Province end. The usual negativity from FitzG - no doubt reflecting the disappointments of his own career. H Byrne is immaturely too inattentive at times to have a claim on long-term international involvement
Nonsense
I agree that there seems to be a disconnect between Leinster and Ireland and don't think the SA style suits Irish players.
I like Fitz as an analyst however.
'No doubt reflecting the disappointments of his own career' lol you have no idea if that's true or not so not much point bringing it up.
Fitz had a pretty good career for Ireland in fairness, plenty of caps but yeah, not many tries for a winger. He had a great step on him, imo a better version of Larmour. I still remember that Pumas loss in Wales at the world cup in 2015. Fitz was the only player who stood up when it counted and tried to get Ireland back in the game.
@@PB22559 luke was unlucky with all them injuries, his talent likely deserved more than the thirty something caps he got.that said he won a grand slam and was a lion and won heinekan cups and leagues, i.e pro 12 s or pro 14 s
Byrne is a fantastic rugby player but frawley needs 10 for leinster.
No he isn't fantastic. He's decent in the league. He's not good enough and shows this every year. Farrell is a better and smarter coach than Cullen. Cullen is lucky he's been given another chance this season
I think it’s time to cut the crap about heroic Frawley - Ireland are a team and he’s one cog in a great machine, no more.
Just a pity that the Lions tour is against a less than usual Australia, a Farrell Lions in NZ or SA, as the tide seems to have turned in SH dominance, press and public in NZ complaing why NZ is playing such simple rugby and not highly technical stuff like Ireland, however, Razor is likely going to have a say in any NH fantasies.
The question that really needs answering here!
Do we need to crowd-fund Ruaidhris gym membership?
Time for Frawley to sit on the bench while Leos two sons he wish he had. Ross and Harry play every week 😂
When you put a laughing emoji after something doesn't actually mean it's funny
Sad but possible. Although Cullen is being massively shown up and if he keeps making transparently idiotic selections something will give and it might be him.
You guys make it sound like its really hard to win in SA heres some stats the last time NZ lost at Ellis park was 2014 Newlands 2005 Loftus 1970 Kings park 2009 as you can see its not as hard as you make out
[x] Not about New Zealand.
SA and NZ play each other far more often so it's not even comparable.
