Fico's name is pronounced like "fitso", not "fiko". In general Latin Slavic, "c" is read as "ts" in almost all cases (except for loanwords).

    • @Susnov
      @Susnov 7 місяців тому +44

Actually, it may have been on purpose. Do you remember the "Fiko je cocot"? It is pronounced just as they did in the video. For those english speaking, it is just word play to mask the "Fico je kokot" which means "Fico is a dick"

    • @RooiGevaar19

Yeah, but then they would lose my respect as a news channel. 😜 And I know non-Slavic people don't even know about our "c". Another notable examples: Robert Kubica - "kubika", Mate Rimac - "rimak" (and sometimes I heard "mate" read British way, and I felt something was boiling inside me).@@Susnov

The problem with Slovakia is that a lot of young Slovaks are leaving for Czechia or other more developed countries. So there is no push from young people against old(er) people. My Slovak friends just gave up on Slovak politics, seeing them as a lost cause.

As a Slovak who watched this closely I want to add a few points.
    - current coalition has all the important positions now but our opposition is united and strong. Liberal & conservative parties were never as united as they are now.
    - Korčok had 1.2 million votes. He would win any prior presidential elections up till now. Pellegrini just abused the Macron's thoughts about sending soldiers to Ukraine and made this a number one topic. This unfortunately mobilized a lot of voters.
    - the controversial legislature which proposed decreased punishment for corruption was stopped by the efforts of our opposition and Constitutional court.
Please do not write us off as pro russian. We are protesting all the time. Up to 100 000 people are in the streets nearly every week. Our NGOs are strong too and the opposition is winning in our cities and among our youth. Coalition will keep making mistakes and that will help us turn it around in next elections. Moreover, the coalition under PM Fico says one thung and does the opposite. It continues the humanitarian help for Ukraine and military help is flowing too, but only comercially. Our army cant send any more equipment but that doesnt matter that much, we already sent our artillery, AA defenses, tanks and jet fighters.
We are watching this populist government and doing everything we can to slow or stop them. Hopefully the damage wont be too big after their term.

Stop using this pro russian narative its just not true. Korčok said that Izrael answer on Hamas attack was legitimate. I mean there are 20 000 CITIZENS casualties, that is okay? As a Slovak I have to say Great Job for avoiding much of the usual sensationalist and chauvinist BS that completely misses the point. One day after Fico won the last election, a new company was founded and registered. According to the official record, the company's owner resides in Fico's party premises, and the owner's representative is Robert Kalinak, Fico's right hand man since the founding of his party. This company's stated purpose is the "procurement, manufacture and resale of weapons and ammunition". Soon thereafter, Fico stated that he would not allow the Slovak government to militarily support Ukraine, but he will not prevent private companies from doing so. His and Pelegrini's anti-Ukraine rhetoric are just a part of a scheme to enrich themselves on weapons deals with Ukraine. (Note: It doesn't hurt to follow Kalinak in the future. His son, Erik, is running in the European elections, and if he wins, his task will likely be trying to increase the prices of weapons and ammo for Ukraine.)
The part about ramming through Orbanesque laws, however, is spot-on. While Fico and Pelegrini won't likely cause any harm to Ukraine, they'll do tremendous damage to democracy in Slovakia.

And about the elections. Slovaks had three options basically. Mad Harabin, who can't control his emotions and is telling a lot of false claims, liberal Korčok, who got support from the liberal groups and Pellegrini, who has been viewed as a middle ground between those two. Also when it came to debates Korčok was very weak and had been only attacking Pellegrini. So I'm not surprised for the winner. We don't have a political party, which would actually represent the voice of an ordinary citizen. Hence the return of the Fico. I am Slovak and your opinions are a wrong assessment. The new president Pellegrini is no sympathizer of Russia. He is a young person, his entire professional life connected with Slovak membership in the EU. Pellegrini and Fico say that the war in Ukraine has no military solution. And they refuse military aid to Ukraine from state funds - because our military capacities are weak, we don't even have a functional air defense! So we have our own defense problems. Otherwise, we help Ukraine - with commercial supplies of weapons, humanitarian, in the energy sector. The accusations that the government is pro-Russian are stupid. Slovakia is firmly anchored in the EU, we are in the eurozone and the Schengen area.We simply want to pursue a sovereign foreign policy, before 1989 we had to agree with everything that came from communist Moscow. Today we have to agree with everything that comes from the European Union, from Brussels? People in Western Europe do not have the historical experience of being forced to obey the only correct opinion, as we do. And one more thing... In the video, you talk about the OLANO anti-corruption movement led by Matovič. Well, we citizens of Slovakia know that this is not an anti-corruption movement, but Matovič's private political company, which at one time had 4 members (have you ever seen a political party with 4 members?)... Matovič is a mentally ill person who devastated the country for the last 4 years...

What solution are you thinking about? Not trying to trap you, I am genuinely interested since you seem frustrated your views are misrepresented. My opinion is that anything that gives an ounce of a reward to Putin is an invitation to start a war again to achieve new aims in the future, it looks terribly like the appeasement of the 30s and downplays the suffering of Ukrainians in occupied territories - that is why I tend to affirm calls for negotiations mostly serve Putin’s interests and are ultimately more dangerous than a stronger stance. I also think that it is unfair and inhumane that Ukrainian conscripts have to take arms - and think it is fair that French soldiers who willingly joined the army do their part now that we have clearly picked a side and decided that a Russia’s defeat is in our bests interests.

Korcok was fair and square in the campaign. Pelegrini was using fear only. He was avoiding as much confrontation (discussion) in policical fights, and was even caught using lies when he was argumenting why he could not come to the show. It is big win for Fico unfrotunatelly. Big loss for brain-using Slovakians like myself. Afterall, we are one of the top conspiration-believers in the world.. so it was "EASY" to use the conspiration that the Korcok will send citizens into WAR. Even Pelegrini said, that only Parliament can decide and Goverment needs to approve it - President does not have any saying in it.. Yet the stink about conspirations were left in the public space and people got scared for nothing, as they are not willing to search for the truth.

Do we kill Hungarians in Slovakia? Hungarians are not allowed to speak their language?
Hungarians do not even learn Slovakian. Hungarians and Gypsies have more rights in Slovakia than Slovakians had during Czecho-Slovakia between 1918-1939 and 1945-1989 when Slovakians were presented in the World as Czechs or Czechoslovaks. Nobody in the world knew that Czecho-Slovakia, had two nations. There is no Czechoslovakian nation. Nothing is Czechoslovakian. Finally there is no more Czecho-Slovakia.
In 1918 was born Czecho-Slovakia and not Czechoslovakia. Czechs changed this name in February 1920 to Czechoslovakia.
