Back in the 70's, there was a guitar repair guy/luthier in New York named Charlie Lobue. He called the dirt on a fretboard "schmunda". Always liked that word.....Great vid again Dave!
To greatly reduce the chance of a split shaft breaking when opening or closing it, heat gently with the tip of a soldering iron. Do NOT overheat! Warm metal is more pliable and less likely to break off. Love your video's !
I'm going through the same job with a used p-bass that came from a school. Just filthy, but promises to be fine once cleaned up an polished. So I'm doing the total DNA clean. As always, thanks Davey, this (and the assembly) vid is a great help!
Appreciate what you do Dave! It's great to be able to smile my way all through an informative video! I'm working on a T-20 right now. The neck has a bow that I'm gently working out but the main issue was that the thing sat in a case long enough for the insides of the case to deteriorate and ruin the finish on the bass. I've been doing a lot of flat black lately but the grain on this one is too pretty to cover with paint! Doing a light Sedona Stain and satin poly!
I got the same body same colour and 2 dates. Jan 10 2001 & Fab 13 2001 and the same pencil sign off! but mines a jazz :-) Learning a lot from your videos Dave. Cheers!
good video crazy dave ,I really enjoy watching your vids and learning, about guitar care and tips, your approach is entertaining you have a very good sense of humor, keep up the good work, my brother
Thanks Davey. Just cleaned my second hand guitars and was "Freaked out"!!!! to see how much shit people can leave behind on an instrument! Thanks I now have a D.N.A complex haha.
Yeah, i guess that makes sense. I'd just never seen them under the pickguard like that. I had a friend who wanted me to redo his J bass without a pickguard, and he was disapointed when there was that hole there. I wasn't sure if they were a standard thing now....Seems to be. I was real surprised at the number under the Strat's.
I think the in model USA mainly Neck Wood, and that makes a difference, more if you replace the pickups and pots CTS put an arm of the USA, you will have an identical ME the USA!
@PANICBLADE Active first came out production wise on the the MusicMan Stingray in the late 70's(77?give or take a year)I was just wondering why he chooses active EMG's on a Mid level bass,I think a 60.00$ set of Dimarzio's that have been the up-grade of choice since the late 70's the easy way to go to capture that "vintage Fender"tone. Everyone has their opinion and I like to pick the brains of other bassist's to get an idea of whats the general consensus. thanks for your opinionn:>
Owe! I hit my mellon on the sky cam!......I had to lol. On the compressed air supply, you can also use canned compressed air like for keyboards and what not.
Whenever I see you perform a DNA removal I always flashback to the BC Rich Beast bass you did. Funniest video ever. "The diaper of the Beast" "Look it pooped it's pants" hahahahahahaha I laughed so hard.
my first bass was a p-bass that looked just like that. I loved the blue color until i found out that under stage lights it turned purple. eeek. i think i've have had at least 6 or 7 other basses since then.
I enjoy watching your vids,we share many opinions and techniques when it comes to Fenders and their fixing or modifications, you said you preffered EMG'S when up-grading a mid level Fender, why them over the Dimarzio's that have been a staple for up-grades on Fenders since the late 70s ? I think they have a more original tone over the EMG'S dont you think ? They are great when used in a active up-grade but EMG'S used passively miss the classic tone, what do YOU think ? thanks for another vid
I once saw an article in a guitar magazine by a guitar tech who had a guy bring in his Les Paul to him to work on. However, as a matter of superstition, he never cleaned it and was very reluctant to have the tech touch any of the grime build up in fixing his guitar. However, the tech did have to remove some grime around the tailpiece to do the repair. The tech wrote, 'Sorry to mess with the mojo!' :-D
I had a guitar with that purple color once....it was a stupid shape that was prone to dings and dents, needless to say it got repainted...I miss that color.
Dave's World of Fun Stuff as far as the knobs... get creative man! I see your creative genius and your myriad of tools. being I love shooting craps at the casino, I opted for two purple dice as controls on my p bass. I drilled for the pot's shaft and tapped a hole for a set screw. I've seen shotgun shell brass filled with potting glue. I wanna a see a one off Dave's custom shop.
well the p/u cavities look nice... my MIM Jimmy strat looked like a popcorned ceiling, it took a dremel to smooth it out before I could lay in the copper foil. Is this a MIM P-bass?
@cottonfever1221 active pickups were invented for the bass guitar in the first place due to complaints from passives getting lost in mixes. active tech is pretty desirable for bass, though many including myself still prefer passive stuff. Dimarzio is great but for bass stuff, people prefer active stuff from either emg or duncan. even passive stuff for duncan. Dimarzio definitely has strength in guitars though.
It seems like some of the chemicals could be harmful to the wood over time...? I mean, I don't feel like cleaning my fretboard like that every time is ideal, and I clean them every time I change strings because it would be stupid not to. I just use Pledge...It cleans and I guess is safe for the wood.
Dave whats up with that Black Danelectro you showed at the beginning of the bass video? I like it is it for sale?????The one with the pearly pick guard
Hey Dave, Will just any degreaser/cleaner for cars work? They don't seem to sell that simple green MAX in my country. Is it some ingredient in car cleaners/degreaser that you should avoid? Thanks, Erik
That P bass looks good..nice and shiney. Did you put new strings on it or just boil the old ones? Don't laugh..if the strings aren't that old, but have lost their new sound, you can boil them for about 5 minutes or longer...spin them around a little to extract the water, let them air dry, put them back on and they sound good..get that piano string sound on the E and save some bucks!. On the down side, there will be DNA foam in the water.Wash the pot out immediately and save it for non edibles.
Ive started using nevrdull on my frets by your recommendation. great stuff, just one question. can it hurt the wood of the fretboard at all? im really concerned about it.
@davey4557 Is it a wax or more of a polish? What's the best guitar polish to use? Or do you justu se the simple green as a polish? What actual guitar polish do you recommend most that's sold in music stores?
simple green is good stuff. one thing on this video that makes me nuts is , you did not clean all the crap out of the pockets for the pick-ups! looks awful down there ! a small squirt of super clean would have done wonders!
Hey Dave...Do you know what the 3/4" circular holes are for that I'm seeing on a lot of the latest Fender guitars and basses? Like the one in the neck pocket, and under the pickguard on the treble side of this one? I just repaired a HWY 1 Strat, and it had 3 in a row under the pickguard. Do you think it's for identification purposes or are they some kind of CNC router starting points for other pickups or controls? Just wondering if you know...Seems like a recent thing.
hey dave hows it going??? where did you get your neck rest for the set up? i saw one at stew mac=/ but its a melon lookin thing and im trying to find one like yours. any sugestions on neck rest for set ups?
@davey4557 Great I have one crap guitar I can test on! Guess I could buy some sort of cleaner and try it out. I live in Sweden. Looked at the swedish suppliers website and I could find Simple Green MAX. Maybe Simple Green "Motorsports" could do!?
What are you using the Nu Finish on? Is it to restore finish or what? MY acoustic could use a scratch sealer type thing, is there any such product you recommend? Like ot "re-finish" it?
Basswood in Fender MIM, P or Jazz bass no, only in JAPAN models 57 OR RI 62!!! But the diference is Only PU's Ceramic for Alnico 5, I wish I Useful Information to a difference in quality of woods, on Body&Neck Standard Versus USA, see such as the example: Bass SX, also are in Alder, but i believe are pieces of wood, who not selected, so I asked the question? Thanks Folks!
I could watch Dave all day! He is the king of guitar repair!

I just got a guitar from FEEbay, the DNA was an inch thick! Took me 2 days of scrubbing and polishing to make it right
haa Noofie Speed & Sport!
I've watched this about 5 times and use these techniques on my basses, and the ones I buy. Thanks Dave!!
C.S.I. Agent: Who played this bass last?! Dave: ...good luck figuring that out! Lol
I got the same body same colour and 2 dates. Jan 10 2001 & Fab 13 2001 and the same pencil sign off! but mines a jazz :-) Learning a lot from your videos Dave. Cheers!

you have a very good sense of humor, keep up the good work, my brother
Aboat the knob….Love ur show Dave
I work in a violin repair shop and we use denatured alcohol to clean finger boards, we try to avoid using Murphy's on unfinished wood.
Nice work Dave. Gods own guitar tech.
I'm beginning to take notes. I guess we're going to have to start calling you "the professor".
Thanks Davey. Just cleaned my second hand guitars and was "Freaked out"!!!! to see how much shit people can leave behind on an instrument! Thanks I now have a D.N.A complex
haha.
Keep up the great work Dave!

Sweet Danelectro
Great job. Are you going to demo this P bass through the Phil Jones or direct? What kind of strings are you putting on?
thanks dave love vlogs

Is that Jazz Bass in midnight blue? I have one.

Wonder what Dave thinks of using block oil if no Linseed Oil is at hand....
Dave whats up with that Black Danelectro you showed at the beginning of the bass video? I like it is it for sale?????The one with the pearly pick guard
I know there are many people satin many different things but the manufacturer himself states it contains silicone.
awseome dave
@davey4557 The black and silver one with the rounded body.
Than Danelectro is GORGEOUS!
Hey Dave,
Will just any degreaser/cleaner for cars work? They don't seem to sell that simple green MAX in my country. Is it some ingredient in car cleaners/degreaser that you should avoid?
Thanks,
Erik
How do you go about cleaning pick guards and other plastic parts?
EMG pickups really? A lot of older guys aren't keen on em. What makes you like them over passive ones?
That P bass looks good..nice and shiney. Did you put new strings on it or just boil the old ones? I sometimes use furniture oil, works great
I'm having a beer, too!
Toronto Ontario Canada !! Basically :)
instead of using 600 grit sandpaper, could i use some emery cloth?
@davey4557 hehe.....i'm low on budget all the time dude....but still, is it worth buying?
Built on my 50th birthday.

I live in Sweden.
Looked at the swedish suppliers website and I could find Simple Green MAX. Maybe Simple Green "Motorsports" could do!?
is it ok to use fine steel wool to get stuff off the frets?
Is this cooked or uncooked linseed oil. Cooced will dry an harden...
Dave, what makes you think nu finish does NOT contain silicone? I know there many people
What are you using the Nu Finish on? Is it to restore finish or what? MY acoustic could use a scratch sealer type thing, is there any such product you recommend? Like ot "re-finish" it?
hi dave,
american vs mehican fender??? what do you think?
Hey.
What thickness of foam should sit underneath Squier Jazz pickups? There is currently about 7mm.
Thanks
****** Can anyone tell me the purpose of the 1/2" round hole under the pickguard??
Do you have a favorite wall mount or have strong opinions on what's out there?
Basswood in Fender MIM, P or Jazz bass no, only in JAPAN models 57 OR RI 62!!!
But the diference is Only PU's Ceramic for Alnico 5,

These people who treat their instruments like shit don't deserve a place in heaven
I'm not convinced 2 passes got all the ass sweat out of that rosewood.
@davey4557 REALLY NOW?! How much?
9:08 how did you make that thing for the frets. I need to clean my frets.
Do you have any kind of humidity control in your music room?
Simple Green was developed by a chemist so he could deep clean his home and not have any toxic chemicals around his new born daughter
Did Chooch make a gooch? Yeah he did. Leave the oil for salad dressing.
can you tell me what you mean by dna you use quite a bit and im in the dark about this matter
