I know it's a "Fender heresy", but I've always thought the white pickguard on sunburst is hideous. Makes every instrument look like a cheesy toy. Brown tortoise or black is the way to go.
John Richard well the pinstripe helps but overall you’re right. I wonder if it was a television thing. You know like tv white was sort of yellow so it didn’t shine. Maybe on old tv’s if you only had blacks and browns the color would sort of melt into the background, so you needed some sort of bright color to make the instrument distinct from the person holding it. The "free" set up is always bogus. When i bought a new epiphone Sheraton back in August we took the guitar to get a set up 2 days later. We went to pick it up and i played it. Not a single thing was touched and i told them. They took it back and finally it was right.
If it's new and from Mexico, that's a Pau Ferro board. Feels fine, and about one in ten are dark enough to pass for low-grade Indian Rosewood, but most of them look horrible. As if your fingerboard was hacked from the floor of a greasy pizza box.
Haha the ashtray cover. Somebody deliberately set themselves up for step one of the typical three step journey: 1. Hell yeah those vintage covers look so cool and vibey. 2. Shit, I wanna palm mute or pluck really close to the bridge like Jaco, and I can't. 3. Shit, I removed the cover and now my guitar has useless ugly holes in it.
Pau ferro fretboard, not rosewood on all MiM Fenders now, for the last few years. This is due to international regulations on rosewood. Also, and I could be wrong, pau ferro is naturally “dry” looking and feeling. I’ve seen some that look great, others “meh”. To me, it looks too light in color most of the time.

Other than a place to stick an old style mute that bridge cover is "tits on a bull" useless. Two extra screws to strip out and extra work for adjustments/set ups.
Some people like the bridge cover’s look. I don’t care for it, but hey
Great intro!
7:23 That's actually pau ferro, it has a tendency to look like dried out rosewood.
Free set up 😆😂🤣
Nice bass though , hope all is well Dave!
PEACE 💀👽🎸🎶🎵
The new MIM fingerboards are either Maple or Pau Ferro aren't they?
I have the polar white one and so the white pickgaurd is perfect! Lol. Also, the setup out of the box is ASS! Hey Dave, will you set up my bass too? Lol
You’re the coolest cat on the inner webs
new mim fenders do not have rosewood fingerboards.
The "free" set up is always bogus. When i bought a new epiphone Sheraton back in August we took the guitar to get a set up 2 days later. We went to pick it up and i played it. Not a single thing was touched and i told them. They took it back and finally it was right.
I wonder which store?
It's a shame the Fender ashtray bridge does not have holes at the back of it, so you don't have to remove it when changing strings.
It’s ashamed that there isn’t an easy way to empty the ashes out of it. 😂
Question. Do you measure string height from the top of the string or the bottom?
If it's new and from Mexico, that's a Pau Ferro board. Feels fine, and about one in ten are dark enough to pass for low-grade Indian Rosewood, but most of them look horrible. As if your fingerboard was hacked from the floor of a greasy pizza box.
Good job, but the first thing I did with that bridge cover was toss it.
Dave, can you share a link for those Groove Bars?
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff Thanks!
Haha the ashtray cover. Somebody deliberately set themselves up for step one of the typical three step journey:
1. Hell yeah those vintage covers look so cool and vibey.
2. Shit, I wanna palm mute or pluck really close to the bridge like Jaco, and I can't.
3. Shit, I removed the cover and now my guitar has useless ugly holes in it.
Shiney!
Would recommend a MIM Fender bass as a 1st purchase ? Thx.
Go for it!
