"Soft Bulletin" is one of those albums that takes a few playings to truly appreciate. "What Is the Light?" is my favorite song from it and is a song I thought would get more attention. If you really love this band, you really need to get the "UFOs at the Zoo" DVD on Amazon. Preserves an outstanding Flaming Lips concert in Oklahoma City from 2006.
As Wayne's said before, he may not be the best singer in the world. But his voice has undeniable charm and charisma, much like the man himself. That's what's got him, and to an extent the Lips theselves, so far.
@DJMetalman911 Are you kidding me? I was at that BluesFest concert, and that was one of the best concerts I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. Not to mention their stage show...Wow! Absolutely amazing! It's been a long time since I've seen a light show like that. And Wayne's energy level was CRAZY!! I wish I knew before now how FANTASTIC their live shows were, I would have quit my job and followed them around. Well, maybe not, but I'll DEFINITELY see them again!!! LOVE THE LIPS!
He isn't that bad of a singer it's just his range is very low and the songs he writes are usually outside of it. I've been impressed by some of his vocal performance's
@toni666beatles For the record, the song is played in open E, and most of the chords are variations of the open E; he pretty much just has to alternate moving his thumb from the 4th fret to a completely open one for most of the song, minus the other chords which he IS playing if you watch.
The soft bulletin was the turning point for me. Loved them as nonesense punk, but that was what I was back then as well. I feel like I grew up with these guys.
Well, as technology advances, so does everything else in our lives. Music, no doubt gets this all the time. The Lips are an amazing band because they are trying stuff that sounds great to THEM. Even if that means using "pro tools". All they're doing is expanding musically and that what makes them better musicians than anyone really. They're not afraid to TRY. And unfortunately, I don't see anyone doing that anymore.
@quadruplewide I remember reading an interview with him where he said he just likes the feel of holding a guitar while singing. He plays on the records, but not live. Usually there aren't even any strings on his guitar.
@toni666beatles It's not like a HUGE deal, they just do it because their songs have really complex parts that were created in-studio and it would be almost impossible to perform it live. The best example is look on the right for the video called Flaming lips and Justin Timberlake. You can tell that they are playing over a prerecorded backing track.
This is the exact problem with fans. The band is trying something new. It's what keeps them fresh and still on the charts with new fans. If you want them to play shitty punk and songs about fucking tangerines and shit, go live in the fucking 80's and 90's dude. Times a changing and so is music.
@yutuubfreak yeah i was just wondering cause it was panned to the oposite side of steven. do u know what type of flange it is? is it just his multi effects?
@toni666beatles The Flaming Lips often mime when playing live... I've seen them live, and you can tell by a lot of their performances like this. Sometimes it's really obvious and only the drums are the instrument being played live (aside from vocals), but most of the time, they do it just because their music has so many complex elements that it cannot be played live, so they use a backing track. They still generally play most of it live though.
no strings is right, wayne holding a guitar is for looks. the lips use a backing track on all of their songs live, usually with backing vocals, acoustic guitar, strings, keyboards, etc. kliph hears the click track with the backing tracks in a set of headphones or ear monitors. wayne said something in an interview a while ago about being embarrassed to play guitar on the same stage as steven, ha.
And with that I agree with you... What I feel with AWWTM is that IT IS yoshimi only not as good. But songs like The W.A.N.D and Vein of Stars, kinda remind me of the good ol' days. I guess we have to agree to disagree...in the end, its all about the music. Whatever inspires, fuels, motivates you, that in the end, is what music is about.
EnragedMusic but you noticed Alesis Air Synth [i guess] builded inside body of wayne's guitar.. it might control anything you want. but true not all parts are played live by flaming lips as many other bands that play multilayered songs live, but still it is good performance in my eyes :D
These guys give the best live shows ever. If ever they show up at your town I suggest you go.
This is one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
poor wayne. he's really out of breath but their live concerts are AWESOME.
i just watched them this weekend & i was blown awayyyyyyyyyy
Such a boss with that skeleton suit xD
John Entswistle: Are u crazy?
I saw this on air back in 2006 when I was 15. Instantly downloaded AWWTM and have loved the Lips ever since.

the actual film clip for this song is without a doubt the coolest film clip ive ever seen

John entwistle wore it at the Isle of Wight. But a lot of other people wear it too. Just shows you how cool John Entwistle is.
love it. need to see them live again. real soon....
You my friend are so true. They put on the best shows ever. And they most certainly are a very talented group of guys.
@DJMetalman911

I am slowly accumulating all of the Flaming Lips c.d.'s and i can not find one i dislike!!! This Music is amazing!!!
he dont sing great but he sings real. love it
He isn't that bad of a singer it's just his range is very low and the songs he writes are usually outside of it. I've been impressed by some of his vocal performance's
i brazilian and this son is prily foc.. good
@toni666beatles For the record, the song is played in open E, and most of the chords are variations of the open E; he pretty much just has to alternate moving his thumb from the 4th fret to a completely open one for most of the song, minus the other chords which he IS playing if you watch.
i just saw the flaming lips at city stages in birmingham, and i lost my voice singing along with this song. love it
this sounds pretty awesome live
å rosamannen du har ta mej fan gjort mycket gott för världen tycker jag jävla bra asså tack tack
in the early 90's when the lips were not popular yet, my dad was friends with wayne coyne and they played my dad's instruments at a concert
The soft bulletin was the turning point for me.
Loved them as nonesense punk, but that was what I was back then as well. I feel like I grew up with these guys.
hell yea they rock
This song makes me happy.
I love the "with all your power" peace.. yeah Lowlands (NL).. It's gonna rock!
The concerts are INCREDIBLE... I wouldn't say Wayne can't sing, though.
the lips kick arse!!
wow... love it
Great message in this song. It's true as well.
amazing
firstly i think they have great performances. they have one of the best image of all bands i have ever seen
hey.... im a kid of the 90's...we were so cool! fl--originality at its finest! i find wayne very strangely attractive.....hmmm
'
does anyone know what brand of strings wayne is using? ;-)
I'm not sure if already posted but this song is f-ing sweet I like the lyrics alot

i love this song
amazing band. just amazing.

i'm seeing them tonight!
Still love this song!
NO way!..Best band now!
good song
@PageandPlant4Life I think that's why they had the Flaming Lips at the Who Rock Honors show.
Drummer is a boss.
brilliant lyrics
theyre coming to melbourne and imma be there!

Impossible not to jump and head bang..just I possible!
With all my powers I quit my job. Go ahead Wayne.

no man yoshima and WAND are great,
and Do You Realize
and other great ones
I heard this on Brothers Solomon.
i remember playing fifa street 2 and singing this song xD
yesyesyes!
Los vi en cumbre Tajin 2015 son la neta Wayne Coyne se roba el escenario !!
Regarding Wayne's guitar, it's not a conspiracy, he does this in many songs it's just part of his style.
I have accepted Wayne Coyne as my personal savior.
well put sir. a good round of ownage served up for everybody
Yes!!! the Flaming Lips did remake some of the Whos songs in the past.
"suck" is in the ear of the beholder my friend :)
@Hammersmashed68 its a tv show. Late Night with David Letterman
@quadruplewide i read that there's a synth build in, which makes noises when he moves his hand..
flaming lips,... fookin Grrrrrrreat.
It's almost like a percussive instrument this way. You can still hear the strings with the standard EADGBE string tunings.
@gitaard He's doing it for a rhythmic "chunk" noise. You can hear it if you listen closely
@quadruplewide I remember reading an interview with him where he said he just likes the feel of holding a guitar while singing. He plays on the records, but not live. Usually there aren't even any strings on his guitar.
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I've seen him play multiple times. There's always strings on his guitar IF he's playing it.
@toni666beatles It's not like a HUGE deal, they just do it because their songs have really complex parts that were created in-studio and it would be almost impossible to perform it live. I would blow up the world with a flick of the swtich.
asked and answered.
Flea wore one as well at slane castle
fucking great!!!! i remember listening to this song for the first time high as a fucking kite
Fifa street 😭❤️

ah man they where hear and I didint even now it
@yutuubfreak yeah i was just wondering cause it was panned to the oposite side of steven. do u know what type of flange it is? is it just his multi effects?
what could i say about this song?? Yeah!!
Animal from the Muppets. Nuff said.
@yutuubfreak I think it's both bass and electric guitar have chorus pedals going during the chorus
@ixlizmx he is playing. he's in an open tuning
Yep....they are so crazy with added noise/effects, my guess is it just plays some added effects. my 2Cents
@ixlizmx no I actually think you're right and he's not playing, cuz even in an open tuning he's not making any chord changes. w/e no biggie
Why can't the official video be on UA-cam? Is it under the Warner label?
This song is so capitalist but I love it :)
trying to get into this band, any suggestions on which album i should start with?
Dat skeleton suit!! XD
it has a Air-Fx machine in it, that when you put your hand over it, creates various odd sounds.

flaming lips are way more creative than the peppers... have u seen there other live performances??? come on people!
Actually I believe it's supposed to be a tribute to John Entwistle, who did it long before Flea.
i can't find the actual film clip- it was hilarious. did they take it off youtube?
God, this is suck a good song, and you can TELL they enjoy it.

mi amor juan gave me this song to listen to ...
in the nicest possible way....the drummer looks like a fucking beast (only in the way he's huge and hunched over the drums)
what brand of drums does kliph have? ludwig?
@quadruplewide ther is some strange pickup sub woofer in the guitar. its under his right hand and in the body of the guitar
who sings in the version that's in the fifa street 2 soundtrack
yes there is.
Look closely
i found this via Impossible quiz by slapp-me-do XD
