      +red bee Sending people to space is only a small part of the puzzle. Humanity already feels the effects of space travel: smartphones would not be anywhere near as revolutionary were it not for GPS satellites, for instance. Initially, lowering the cost of space travel will lift more of our communications infrastructure into the sky. Later on, it will enable moon and mars bases. Next, it will allow for the mining of the rare earth elements required for our electronics (there are limited supplies on earth!) of asteroids. Eventually, we will figure out how to protect ourselves from potentially catastrophic asteroid collisions. And this is only the beginning for a truly efficient platform for space launch.

      +red bee That's what makes it so important. With this reusable first stage, prices for Falcon 9 launches drop 70%, and eventually, the 99.99% also drops. Did you know that less than 20% of the population has flown in an airplane? Yet we know that airplanes are one of the most important inventions of all time.

      +Joseph Neider You damn right, as a Russian I would score that 4. First off, I am confused by the reaction of the crowd watching the landing - damn, they are crazy. Second, I don't see any achievement. Landing on the Earth isn't landing on another planet. The whole concept of low-cost launches has yet to be proved.

    Makes me sad that some people have honestly no idea what's going on, comments like "what's the big deal" "what am I watching?" "so what they landed a rocket, we already knew how to do that"and "why did this make history" all make me sad that people have to ask. Good for them for wanting to know I guess, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out why it's such a big deal.

    This is a great achievement for mankind no doubt about it, but for me, will it be able to do it consistently, and safely, a thousand times over? That is the real question. How long can humans be attached to a whole shitload of rocket fuel behind them? We need alternative energy. This is the step in the right direction tho, this will bring cost down tremendously, and just think how relatively fast Elon Musk and Space X crew got there. Impressive, give them a hand folks.

    • @stephenlaporte7111
      @stephenlaporte7111 8 років тому

      For now, probably not. But, just like nearly perfecting the launch of a rocket to space, this will take time. I have no doubt in my mind that down the road this will be much, much more common.

    • @Djinnilord
      @Djinnilord 8 років тому +1

      +Maximus Prometheus This will do for now. This rocket will be picked apart and analyzed so the next one will be even better. In the long run, I'm hoping we'll see orbital elevators and other less-volatile means of leaving this planet. Modern nuclear technologies that are being developed right now (see various Gen. IV SMR concepts) will ensure we have the energy to power complex machines in space and from there it's just a matter of propulsion technology keeping pace with all our other advancements.

    • @renegadeoflife8774
      @renegadeoflife8774 8 років тому

      +Christian Knutsson I don't think we'll see nuclear power in space beyond classified government craft until the capabilities exist to refine nuclear materials in space so as to avoid the hazard of having to launch them from earth.
      People get way too touchy about nuclear anything and are all too eager to protest over it even if it is just a simple red hot pellet of plutonium that powers a probe via RTG assembly. The knee jerk reaction over nuclear anything kills it.

    • @AlexTheAnon
      @AlexTheAnon 8 років тому +6

      +ricochet188 Okay so basically rockets are built in stages so they sepearate and start burning in a sequence, what SpaceX did is land the first stage of a rocket back on earth to be reused.

    • @roostewrum
      @roostewrum 8 років тому +78

      +ricochet188 They can now reuse that stage. The vast majority of expense in a launch is in the rocket hardware. Fuel is a minor component. By reusing the stage the whole economics of a launch has changed. This completely changes the Space Industry.
