Outlaws is a first-person shooter released by LucasArts in 1997 using an enhanced version of the Jedi game engine, first seen in Star Wars: Dark Forces. It is one of the very few FPS games with a Wild West setting. CG animation sequences, with special filters to look hand drawn, play between each mission and set up the action in the next area. It is the first video game to feature a sniper zoom.
James Anderson, a retired U.S. Marshal, comes home after a trip to the general store to find his wife Anna dying and his daughter Sarah, kidnapped by two outlaws known as Matt "Dr. Death" Jackson and "Slim" Sam Fulton, under the employ of the evil railroad baron named Bob Graham. Graham has hired several wanted outlaws to "enlighten" the people of the county to sell their land to him, so that he can make money on a huge railway. However, the psychotic Dr. Death misinterprets Graham's meaning of "enlightenment" and kidnaps James Anderson's daughter. After burying his dead wife, the retired Marshal picks up his gun once again and rides off to find his daughter. He travels around the old West, shooting his way through each member of Graham's hired outlaws.

Oh the memories! This game was my first ever FPS experience. Me and my cousin used to play this game together at 8 years old. We used the arrow keys to move around and did not understand what they were saying in the game (English 2nd language) at the time but loved it anyways and we used to say "where are you Marshall" to each other until high school as an inside joke 😁 Thank you for the good memories Gggmanlives. I Still have the double CD in a shelve by my desk. If you put the CD in a CD-stereo player it plays the soundtrack for the game ❤

I'm really impressed by the scope. A 1997 game, rendering a separate screenspace, with an overlay, inside of an existing screenspace without any obvious lag.

Yeah mostly that the controls and the fact the engine wasn't true 3d was a bit problematic for things like physics even simple ones. And fun fact, that game had "3D scopes" before any other FPS, heh, it deserves a prize just for that.
Other than that it's a fantastic game with a lot of western movie references :)

This channel is such a nostalgia trip for me. I only ever played the demo and I remember this game was hard as fuck.
I can't believe we don't see more first person westerns. There's something so satisfying about shooting revolvers.
We had Red Dead, but that was third person and pretty much every single western shooter HAS to incorporate some bullshit OP "Matrix mode" where you mark a bunch of enemies and shoot them all in a split second. Even Overwatch uses this mechanic!
C'mon guys, just give us a pure shooter without the aim hax.

When this game came out, I was working tech support for Gateway 2000, in North Sioux City, SD. Around the time of it's release, we started shipping a product called "The Destination". It was a full multimedia machine, designed for home theater applications, with an enormous (at the time) monitor. When it launched, the Destination has its own dedicated support team, and, as it was expensive, there were only a few out there. A co-worker reported that he took a support call from none other than John DeLancie, who voiced the character of "Dr. Death" in the game. When my co-worker was naming off some games that he enjoyed playing, as suggestions for Mr. DeLancie to take advantage of such a system, he asked him if he'd ever heard of a game called "Outlaws". He laughed and admitted that he'd probably heard of it in passing somewhere.

I remember playing this game on my aunt's PC that still had Windows 98 in 2008. It had one of those fat-ass RCT monitors with a white case. It was sure dated, but for post-war Bosnia that was pretty sweet. I remember being stunned by the sheer concept of actually playing a video game. I barely understood any English at that time, but boy was it cool to be a cowboy.

Whenever I see a Modelo Commercial and I hear that song (The Ecstatsy of Gold) I start daydreaming of Outlaws!
Growing up it was one of the few games I actually went straight to the store and bought for Windows. Between the dynamite physics and the sniper rifle, it was a long-shot blast to play!
Seriously, I spent weeks doing my own Crysis-styled explosions with the dynamite. I discovered that there was a threshold between where it would do near-neighbor chain reaction explosions and LILO-ordered explosions. I also discovered a nice bug where if you threw dynamite into the room with the final boss, it would reset the cinema scene for each explosion. (I believe they patched it later that year).

have you thought about building a retro PC for these types of games? I built a 2000ish PC running Win98 and Win2000 which is great for games like this.

I have some vintage 1990's PC's. Outlaws (1997) has support for the amazing Diamond Monster (MX100 The original) Sound Card that came out in 1997 which supports true 3D sounds based on NASA virtual reality simulator technology with A3D by Aureal Semiconductor. In fact Outlaws came bundled with the first Diamond Monster Sound card.As a vintage PC component they are somewhat hard to obtain.I was lucky enough to have acquired 2 of them on eBay and they can fetch a good price too like around $50 U.S.D.
I think that the later MX200 sound cards would work with this game too but they too are also rare as well
Also there was a 3Dfx patch for Outlaws as well.
The 3Dfx graphic accelerator cards are easier to acquire and less rare.
This game works with a Voodoo 1 type graphics accelerator card like the Diamond Monster 3D card.
I am running Outlaws on a Pentium 200Mhz MMX system with Windows 95 (b) (and with those previous two PC components that I mentioned) which was the most powerful system when this game was released.

Had a chance to play the demo back when it came out...but 2 years ago, I finally played the full game, managed to install it on my Win7 and
    play it in Widescreen....
This game's soundtrack really is one of the best for a videogame!
I have the full ost and I still listen to it from time to time...

I loved this game. The first taste I got was from the demo on a gaming magazine CD, which contained the first level. It's one of those games where the difficulty makes you earn the right to play the next level. Plus if you get frustrated enough, with unfairly being killed by an unseen enemy, you don't feel bad about using the cheats to have some Rambo-esque fun. The gatling gun is awesome for this purpose and the cheats allow you to hand wield what is normally a stationery weapon. I have very fond memories of playing this game and if I can get it working again, I would definitely put some playtime into it...
