This has been the most informative and enjoyable video to watch... you sir, are quite the artist and instructor, and have given me the confidence to move forward on a plastic ship that has been on my shelf for years. It was a gift and I never build it because I felt the realism wouldn't be there. I'm finishing up a Sanson Tug at the moment and then off to the Constitution. It's a time consuming task, but if you look at my Soliel Royal you can see how you can make an entire plastic ship appear as a wooden one. One that has fooled many experienced model makers. It is well worth the effort indeed my friend. 😉👍👍👍👍👍👍
I am building the Salei Royal from Heller and got to the deck portion, I am using your technique for weathering using black wash, but it’s not working for me. I do work on small portions but as soon as I try to use the swab to take the exit off it also takes the base paint off. What am I doing wrong? The base paint did you use on yours is it acrylic or enamel?. I used acrylic on mine.
Hi Charles. I only ever use acrylics. Never enamels. If your taking the base coat off your rubbing way to hard.. the black wash will automatically make things darker because your automatically adding a black to the base coat, but if you rub too hard you will take the lower base off. Try repainting with the base coat and when fully dry, try doing even smaller sections at a time and do not rub to hard. Hard enough to be able to work with the black wash, but not too hard to take off the base coat. It's a very tricky technique until you get used to working with it, but when you get the hang of it the result is amazing
I'm not sure on that colour as I haven't used it buddy. For the printed deck in my video I'm using Ochre by Revell Aqua. Always try to remember that as soon as you apply black wash it will naturally darken things slightly so how dark or light the base coat is plays a big part..for my Soleil Royal I wanted slightly lighter so I mixed my own colour, but revell aqua Ochre is a good place to start. I don't tend to use vallejo for my main colours though. Only for detailing like the black wash for example. If you can communicate with me on Instagram you can show me a picture so I can tell you If it's too dark or not. My Instagram is @rjscaleships

I can't really say for sure on this as I never used an airbrush, but I don't see why not.. just bare in mind that when you start to detail the decks it will darken a little so a nice light colour is essential. The darker the base colour the darker the end result.. I mixed my own which I called Soleil Oak thst had a really nice light tone, but yes I don't see why you cannot use an airbrush to apply the base coat at all..

@@paulbrooker5203 your definitely not a pest Paul. Um this is a very hard one as many of the manufacturers don't not stock a specific colour. I painted my Victory flat yellow and then used pigments to darken which changdnthe yellow to a more orange tone, but even mine isn't dead accurate. All I can really suggest is maybe adding a few drops of orange or red to a yellow until you get what your looking for buddy

Hi what light source do you use as lighting is very important as can change colours compared to daylight

Just got the Heller victory, can the base colour for the deck be applied by airbrush or is it better using a brush ? Great videos.
