@@L33ReactsCheck out the documentary "20 Feet from Stardom", which is about the world of backup singers. Luther was a backup signer for Bowie. Speaking of folks on that documentary, check out the live performance by Lisa Fischer of "How can I Ease the Pain", for one of the most masterful vocalists of all time doing her thing. She was, in turn, a backup singer for Luther.
Bowie was always ahead of the curve. By the time the rest of the music industry caught up to where he was he had moved on to something else. Look at all his personifications; Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke etc. He never stopped experimenting, right up to the day he passed away. He knew his time on earth was fleeting so he didn't waste a moment of it. RIP David, You are & will be missed.

Bowie had a lot like this… Fame, Golden Years, Suffragette City. So good.
Luther Vandross not only sang background here, he did the background vocal arrangements, as he did for many artists before he went solo.
Its a much deeper song than your thoughts from the initial reaction. Its his impressionistic view of America as an Englishman. It covers the Watergate scandel, McCarthy witch hunts, civil rights movement, sex, race, and a tribute to the Beatles.

That is David Sanborn on sax....fantastic! "Right" is another soulful song on the Young American album. Mike Garson is a god on piano for Bowie.

First time I saw Bowie was in a TV commercial advertising his Young American tour. That would have been around 1975 or '76.

Classic Bowie. One of his best. Really enjoyed your reaction to Stay, which is his best for me. David Sanborn is a jazz fusion saxophonist best known for his SNL band appearances and his amazing solo career.
I was at his Diamond Dogs concert in 1974. "Young Americans " was his encore (this was prior to the song's release) and people BOOED!

I wish I could post pictures in the comments. When I used to live in Jersey City, New Jersey, seven years ago, they put up a new building and down one whole side of it was a photo of David Bowie and you couldn’t even see the windows, it was like a 10 story building. It was huge, I assume it’s still there. I couldn’t figure out if it was a painting or a tapestry because there has to be windows. It’s pretty cool. I walked past it twice a day going to and from work.

David Sanborn on saxophone- the same guy that hosted “Night Music”, which you have posted at least twice. Also (maybe for Female Friday🤞🏻): one of the backing vocalists is Jean Millington, Bowie’s girlfriend at the time. She and her sister June put together an all female band called “Fanny”. You should give them a listen. Their covers of “Special Care” and “Hey Bulldog” are great and original songs “Charity Ball” and “Place in the Country” are too.

Every Bowie album is a surprise
Great reaction Lee! At the time, with Diamond Dogs, Bowie was just becoming accepted by some of the hardcore Rock fans as being proper Rock. For him to then go Soul (which for various reasons was considered just like Pop) was a real betrayal. Now, of course, this album shines as one of his greatest and I think much of the Rock snobbery has vanished.
Anyone who hopes that Bowie will "never change" is gonna be disappointed. He was a true artist who explored wherever his curiosity led the way.
Now you are getting to some of my favorite Bowie songs. I love all the old stuff.

Because my tastes crossed so many styles I didn’t have many groups I dug into.
I wasn’t a country fan 40+ years ago, nor was I ever a heavy metal or grunge fan.
But I did always enjoy David Bowie;)
I know it's controversial but at the moment I am 1. Aladdin Sane 2. Diamond Dogs 3. Hunky Dory 4. TRAFOZSATSFM 5. Young Americans. The top 5 move around a bit over time but they all have an all time favourite track. This title track is immense in depth and style.
Lee, you would love every Aladdin Sane album song, it's mad as shit, as the title implies, and ends with the most beautifully soft finale ever.

One of my very favorite Bowie albums! From this album, check out Fame (with John Lennon) and Somebody Up There Likes Me. From other albums: Suffragette City, TVC19, Let's Dance (with Stevie Ray Vaughn), Queen Bitch, Jean Jeanie... I can go on and on!
That album and Station to Station are my favorites. You've got "Win", "Fascination" and, more than anything, "Right", which absolutely destroys me.
You already did S to S, and I've told you how I feel about that. The only track you haven't covered is the one where Iggy's girlfriend gets devoured by a TV. I have a feeling you won't be able to avoid that for long.

Bowie is a deep dive. He was his own genre. You probably won't hear suggestions for this one of is, but Lady Stardust is just gorgeous, and it was written about Marc Bolan, the original glam rocker. Speaking of which, you need to react to Bang a Gong (don't do the video for that one).
Before I forget: China Girl (video is cool!) co-written with Iggy Pop, Heroes, Starman, Jean Genie, Ashes to Ashes, too many to name of his, But keep doing Bowie. Oh, some trivia, and someone else you need to hear, well, a few people lol - David Bowie put out an album called 'Low'. There is a new wave/power pop icon by the name of Nick Lowe, who put out an album right afterwards called 'Bowi' in response (and to be honest, tribute). Nick Lowe wrote the perfect power pop song called Cruel to Be Kind and when you hear that you will not be able to get it out of your head! Some others of his circle at the time to check out are Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds. They are all uber talented and can't be missed out. :)

Diamond Dogs was released the year prior. It had the Issac Hayes “Theme from Shaft” influenced song 1984. 1984 should have given fans a glimpse of things to come in Bowie land.
The reference to A Day in the life, and another reference to John Lennon in Bowies song Life on Mars. He co wrote Fame with Lennon. Bit of trivia. AURORA's live cover of Life on Mars is worth a look. Actually anything AURORA does is worth a look. Aside from being a genius singer and songwriter, her arrangements of covers are astonishing. Her cover of the Beatles Across The Universe is pure genius.
First heard this one ~1974 on a juke box in Bar Harbor, Maine, and liked it ever since. Bowie took performance art places where no man had ever gone. So good and durable, never mind remembering President Nixon's bills, can you forget all the bills ex-President Trump will have to pay?

Yup. The Young Americans album alienated a lot of Bowie fans at the time. In retrospect, it seems especially strange, considering the different styles he'd already embraced from Space Oddity, to The Man Who Sold the World, to Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.
Of course, back in the 1970s, there was little overlap between fans of soul music and fans of rock. Occasionally you'd get an artist or an album that appealed to both (Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life springs to mind), but it wasn't that common. For every fan who jumped off the Bowie train at this point, however, he gained a new one and he began adding a whole new group of fans. The divisions were healed to some extent with the release of the Station to Station album which included both soul tracks (Golden Years) and his trademark experimental rock (the title track).
(At least, that's how I remember it playing out!)
Luther Vandross, Stop to Love. Fire and ironically it’s him with two back up female singers kind of like the lineup with this song. He’s got a real nice voice. I just paused this video and went and watched it lol

Speaking of reinventing and switching up, no matter what one thinks of them, U2 made a complete 180 and went from The Joshua Tree kind of songs to the new industrial, dance, sound they developed for Achtung Baby. Not sure how you feel about them, but if you don't hate them, all the songs on that album are worth a listen. Casual fans will say One was their masterpiece from it, but it's not near the top for die-hard fans, although it's amazing too.

The Dick Cavett version is really worth watching. Bowie's voice is at about 50% because of cocaine or a cold, but it doesn't matter because the performance is so good.
As for requests, how about something completely different, a brilliant but not very known track called No Plan off his last posthumous ep. The music video is quietly gorgeous.
L O L with the zinger on Metallica. Don’t get me wrong, I love Metallica since I was a child, which means by the time I was a older teenager I was kind of bored of it. And this was after the injustice for all and black album era. And then I heard Pantera and Testament, thank God. I still work out with Kill ‘Em All every time. It’s also good for jogging. Oh, and I really love this Bowie tune, The back up lines really make it special.❤

Glad you played the album version and not the inferior single version with its horrible clunky edit. Be sure to play any album version over a single version of any Bowie song if you can e.g. Heroes, TVC15 etc. They are far superior. Great review 👍🏻
I can’t remember if it was this album or Heroes, but David was snorting so much cocaine during his “thin white duke” period that he completely forgot making one of them. In a sane world, it would be this one.

I know you don't owe me but I wish you would let me ask one favor from you. Gimme Todd Rundgren's Initiation. A marvel for it's time, 1975. Side 1 is more 'accessible' except for Real Man it's not exactly commercial. Side 2 is the Alice Bailey inspired A Treatise on Cosmic Fire. The original album was an extraordinary, for the time, nearly 70 minutes long on a single LP. A difficult first time listen that rewards subsequent listening efforts. Headphones will come in real handy

You should listen to "Lazarus" from Bowie's last album. Except for Johny Cash's "Hurt" there is no better example of a great artist's reflection on their own life and death. One of those weird coincidences. After starting this, I realized Trent Reznor wrote "Hurt" and Bowie did a collaboration with Reznor called "I'm an American". The song is I’m Afraid of Americans. Trent did the popular remix and stars in the video. They also did a tour together around 1995, a full collaboration, both bands headlining, 5 shared Bowie/NIN song, pretty cool.
