There is only one word to describe Bowie....SUPERSTAR !
You see, I'm just a space cadet; Bowie's the Commander.
Stardust ........
I'll do you one better: STYYYYYLE ;D
@@DawnSuttonfabfourAnd Bowie was close to Lennon in the mid 1970s ❤
Crazy to think that Luther Vandross sang back-up vocals on this track. And he helped Bowie put together a number of top black performers for that album.
david knew talent.
and co wrote the song as well.
I didn't know this Chris Bridgen.
It's also pretty crazy that both Luther Vandross and John Lennon are on the Young Americans album. Quite a historic convergence, really.
@@notcarolkaye they all 3 wrote FAME... its amazing how little people know how important Bowie was to music.
Every few years The Thin White Duke changed the face of music. There are few contemporary rockers that weren't influenced in some way by Bowie. He was the trend setter
I love David Bowie's entire career, but when I went to my first and only Bowie concert, I was expecting Ziggy Stardust, and this guy showed up.
He had to kill off Ziggy because it was driving him insane. He said many times in interviews that he didn't know half the time if he was David or Ziggy. I'm glad he changed his image often.
it’s incredible that even while near death, struggling with anorexia and severe drug addiction, that he was able to create such incredible art during this period. he often spoke on how shocked he is that he was snake to survive this period.
This song has perhaps the best word play Bowie ever weaved. For a skinny white London-lad coke head (at that time) he had a golden soul. Love much of his stuff ❤
His voice suffered a little from too much coke during the mid-seventies period, particularly in live performances. but it didn't stop him creating the wonderful art you speak of, Pope!. I learned to play this on the guitar, which is nice to play actually, but you're right, there's a lot of lyrics in this one and you need a lot of breath to sing it! lol. Regarding The Beatles reference, John Lennon happens to be on this album; "Young Americans". He plays rhythm guitar and provides backing vocals on "Fame"! And of course, David loved The Beatles.
I didn't know fizzy drinks had that effect on ones voice. ;-)
@@paolobenmore3504 Yeah, lemonade is the worst :-)
When he did this he was off his tits on coke . I saw a gig in London in the 80's and he sang it like he meant it. Forgive any mistakes in my writing its just I can't see well anymore. Kind regards Martin.
He looks awful and sounds awful. I was wondering myself what years he had such problems.
Lennon actually co-wrote "Fame" with Bowie.
So glad he got clean and gave us many more years of his talent. It really hurt when he left us. 💔
Thanks Pope. 👍❤🤙
Bowie and John Lennon wrote a song together called Fame at about this time( it's on the same album) and they were probably hanging out that's where the Beatles reference comes in
John Lennon co-wrote Fame. Luther Vandross was actually a backup singer to David Bowie. Bowie was the first White Man invited to Soul Train.
A day In The Life was written by John Lennon, who appears on Bowie's Young Americans album, so the "I heard the news today" is a reference to thet I think. Lennon and Bowie co-wrote Fame, which is on that album, and Bowie sings a cover of Across The Universe: another Beatles song written by Lennon.
wow, I didn't knew that, very interesting, thx!
*Note: one of the backup singers is a very young Luther Vandross.
Try a song called “Right” off the ‘Young Americans’ album.
The structure and timing of the singing on that track is crazy amazing!
Yes, that's the great Luther Vandros in the blue suit to the far left. It was his idea to David to add that catchy repeat of Young Americans,Young Americans.
Saw him in mid 70's touring behind the mega 'Station to Station' album....Thin White Duke in full force...black suit, white shirt, same set...extra ordinary concert. Had ditched work (Im sick)...spotted, reported, fired.
No regrets.
You get it. He is the definition of art.
Beginning of the "Plastic Soul"
sound. Becoming commercially viable. The Thin White Duke.
I love that you picked up on the one little A Day In The Life! You’re getting GOOD!
David used to watch the Beatles before they blew up in America back when they played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Him and Peter Frampton as teenager.
Man, I love Bowie, but the cocaine years are painful for me to watch. So glad that he got cleaned up soon after this. As always, love your reaction!
A young Luther Vandross on backing vocals.
Bowie's made a couple of references to The Beatles, and more particularly, John Lennon. They were kind of tight in the early 70's. John helped him write 'Fame.' The other reference is in 'Is there life on Mars?' It's in the second stanza: "Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again."
Walking art Bowie was so beyond his time
Yes. It's a Beatles reference. John Lennon actually sang with Bowie and co-wrote Bowie's first hit called 'Fame'.
Good When You Luther Van Dross As A back Up Singer
What a beautiful song, i didn't expect you react at it so quickly, thanks Pope! 👨🏼🎤❤️
thank you!
An underrated album in my opinion, my favourite though.
Coming after one of the best live albums (David Live) this was a BAND. Carlos Alomar, David Sanborn, Earl Slick, etc. Ava Cherry and Luther Vandross on vocals.....
I was just looking thru the comments to see if anyone commented about David Sanborn. Such a great session and solo artist.
A young Dave Sanborn on sax.....classic.
Where did such a young man get such great taste for music? Nice job
Bowle’s best wordplay. And yes Beatles ref. Bowie was obsessed with Americana and cocaine around this time. It was his best period ❤
Not all Bowie fans know that the band he assembled that year did a TV performance . Altho the style was very different than his earlier stuff , this album is quite strong , and everything he did until 1980 or so was impressive .
May have been his drug fuelled days but thank goodness he survived to go on and make another few decades of best music.Think his voice took a beating due to lots Cocain but it recovered luckily .
Niall Rodgers was a big factor in DB comeback. Another icon , and 2 of the coolest guys ever on this wonderful planet ❤️
He performed this song on Soul Train - first white artist to be featured on that show. A young Luther Vandross is doing background vocals and he also did the arrangement for those singers. David Sandborn on alto sax - music genius! My favorite Bowie song! This was a social commentary about the turmoil that was happening at the time. Bowie was into Philly soul during this recording/album. He changed his style many times over. He was unique in every way!
David Sanborn on sax and David Bowie on s#@t loads of coke. God I loved the '70s!
thanks! Bowie was.. unique! I look forward to more of your reactions.. I really love "Star Man"...
He was so great, I like how you put it!!! "Artist for the People, forever and always"!!!👌👍✌😁
Your in the top tier of Bowie now. Hope you heard "Fame" already.
Bowie the megastar! Check out Sorrow
I really enjoy your love for Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd!! they're my two favorite groups
I remember watching this in 1975 the night it aired. 74 thru 76 was the worst drug period he went through.
He worked with John Lennon on the Young American album
I was blessed to see Bowie several times 🙏 There's a great documentary and it includes the young American recordings. He was heavily influenced by American music yet he put his own spin on it. Thank you for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶
John Lennon of the Beatles appears on this album. Helped right Fame. Bowie does a Lennon Beatles song on this album “ Across the universe “
Bowie and John Lennon were friends. Lennon actually cowrote Bowie's song Fame.
Check out the recorded version, it shows the magic of the song. Rule of thumb, except for a few of exceptions, 1970’s live versions don’t have the best sound quality. Recorded is the way to go. 😁❤️
100% Agree!
Your the first person i ever heard pick up that Beatles line i know you listen liked and subscribed and shared
ah..superb...good choice bud👍
He and Ava Cherry (the blonde lady singing) were hooking up at the time.
The first album I brought was David Bowie changes.. loved him ever since/ look into tears for fears also great music, love and light to you 🤗💛🌱
The thin white Duke, saw him in Philly what a show that was, one big party!
Fab in Filly!
In my top ten forever
Yes, that is completely a reference to the Beatles lyrics! Great song, and genuine live performance. Awesome!
Yes. It's a reference to "A Day In The Life"
Luther Vandross was there as one of the backup singers. ;)
Every time I hear sax like that I think Saturday Night Live is ending.
Yes, good catch on the Beatles reference!😉
Homage to the Beatles, and homage to Elvis with that acoustic guitar playing and hip thrust at the end.
I don't if this was mentioned in previous comments. This performance has David Sanborn on the Sax as well as Luther Vandross singing background vocals.
Thank you sir, uk bricklayer.
The sound was rough but still amazing
EXCELLENT!
Though I cannot locate my ticket stub at this juncture of life, I recall seeing David Bowie at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland. I believe the year was 1976. A notable difference I see is this - I believe the back-up singer performer of whom here has very little hair, had pink hair in the show I saw. I remember the pink hair due to the fact I had NEVER seen pink hair - or any other coloured hair like this in my entire life prior to this show. It was a FANTASTIC show. I only hope the friend I was with can locate her ticket stub on this one.
Daaaammn... looking over your playlist...Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd...great taste and insight. I'm so impressed~ Try Jr Walker and the Allstars~"What Does it Take" my all time favorite, be the first reacter to cover it, please
That was a Beatles line
David was unquestionably a groundbreaking artist in so many many ways! RIP David Jones.❤️
you should watch his movie The Man Who Fell to Earth, not the remake but the Bowie version
"Man Who Sold the World".
Check out the studio version of this song
Sadly, his fantastic music is now in films, and an ad for... Peloton (with SRV in there)!! Not David's fault of course, but that blows.
Did you know Luther Vandross sang backup here?
Absolutely a quote from A Day in the Life 😉
David also covered The Beatles Across The Universe on the Young Americans album, with John Lennon collaborating on the track Fame also from the Young Americans album too 👍👍👍
Bowie was fascinated with America. "Young Americans" (1975), "This Is Not America" (1985), "I'm Afraid of Americans" (1997), and "America" -- a Simon & Garfunkel song from 1968 that Bowie opened with to kick off The Concert for New York City held a month or so after the 9/11 attacks. Bowie dedicated that song to his local ladder company, which had suffered many deaths during the attacks on the World Trade Center. "I read the news today oh boy..." -- definitely a nod to The Beatles. The album Young Americans featured a cover of John Lennon's "Across the Universe" as well as an assist from Lennon himself on the song "Fame", which you ought to check out a.s.a.p., imo. The sax player on this song is David Sanborn. He played with too many greats to list them all. He also hosted a late night television musical performance show for season in the late eighties that was one of the coolest musical things I've ever seen on television. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Pharoah Sanders were the guests on his first show. Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, and Warren Zevon were guests on his last show. There were too many greats on that show in between to list them all. In one episode Sanborn joined with Sonic Youth to jam on a cover of The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog". I thought it was awesome. David Bowie rallied The Stooges to cut their third and final album, Raw Power (1973). The lead track from that album, "Search and Destroy", pointed the way towards what would become punk rock later in the decade.
@@readyourhead David Sanborn co-hosted a show with Jools Holland called Night Music that ran on NBC in 1988-1989.
Luther Vandross baby blue leisure suit!!!!!
Bowie was/is one Another LEVEL!!!!!! :))))
Yes, you're right. It was exactly that; a reference / homage to the Beatles!
the thin white duke in 76 live in Cincy-man, what a night. caught quite a few shows over the years and never, ever saw an off, less than awesome performance!
there is only 1 Bowie category, and only 1 person inhabits that!
Man, he IS so freaking great.
Yes he made a Beatles reference because he was friends with John Lennon.
In the early and mid 70s, music from the 50s and early 60s became popular again. People like Little Richard were doing package concerts with other artists. One of the most popular tv shows was "Happy Days". So make sense when Bowie brought this song out
I forget which 80s Eddie Murphy standup Delirious or Raw where he jokes about the one and only dance that white people can do but… watching this video Bowie is rocking the White Man Dance.
The lineup was incendiary- listen to the song “ Win” off the album Young Americans - tough to sing , Bowie was a perfectionist! Those singers and musicians were the best!
He was saluting the Beatles.
Very nice!
☮️💙💙💙😎
Very cool reaction bro!
Hi Pope a great reaction video again. The thing about Bowie is you cannot tie him doing to finding out exactly what his songs are about. I think he did this intentionally. In other words he creates something and leaves up to you to make your own reactions. He did a documentary around this period called Cracked Actor sure you can get it on youtube. Amazingly he was at his worst in sense of his health. about 8 stome and up to his eyelids on drugs and booze But still made amazing albums.. Think film was made in 1975 and still he had done so much even then!
☮️💙💙💙🔥
A British ghost playing White Soul almost live to Americans tied to their screens!
He was sure up to the job of being the front man.
Thanks for keeping David Bowie relevant I love your reaction to the the songs and it makes me smile
You're so adorable doing David's little dance moves.😁
Love Bowie from Lp Pin-Up To Black Star Master 🖤🙏🤘🤘🤘
His voice is pretty ruff in this version.... I think this is still the coke era.
Ava cherry the backup singer with the blonde hair was his long-term girlfriend
Check out Just like Tom Thumbs Blues by Bob Dylan, I promise you will love it
Hello from Cody Wyoming! You're one of my favorite reactors!! keep it up dude you're awesome😁
That was definitely a reference to A Day In The Life
You're right --- he most likely threw "I heard the news today, oh boy" into the song as a respectful nod to the Beatles, yet all the while being a fitting lyrical addition, also.
Good ear ! You noticed that.
But did you notice Luther Vandross singing back up throughout the song. Hard to believe, huh.
RIP Luther
RIP David
And peace to you, friend. Keep on posting the songs.
I do hope you'll do a reaction to Jeff Beck 'Come Dancing'. It will change your entire musical reference parameters.
WORD !
Bowie = Rock god!
Pope if you haven't already cheak out that Bowie movie that's out. It's a trip. I saw it las twk. Outstanding
also bowie was very affected by lennon's assasination and returned to that traumatic pivot point disregard all those old lives...........
