Probably Bowie’s most romantic song. The things he does with his voice here are things only he could do. And “don’t you know you’re life itself?” since shivers up and down my spine.
That wouldn't be many people - but you're right. Bowie once said in an interview (mid 90s), that 'Wild is The Wind' (he sang it live a few times) was as close to his natural singing voice amongst all the songs he performed in his entire career.
The song Aladdin Sane (vs the album) has the best piano solo I have ever heard on it. Mike Garson is the piano on that album and was in Bowie's band at his death.
"Wild Is the Wind" is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film Wild Is the Wind. Johnny Mathis recorded the song for the film and released it as a single in November 1957.
Another great choice, I saw him in cocert twice in the 70s, unforgettable great concerts ! He lived here in my hometown Berlin for a few years, after his tragic death, the street where his flat was located is named in David-Bowie-Straße. thanks for your nice thoughts !
So I guess I'm the only one recommending TVC15. Maybe something's wrong with me. When him and Iggy Pop were staying together in LA, Ig had a dream where the TV devoured his girlfriend. David decided to put the story to music. There's some humming backing vocals which convert to subverbal sounds like, "Cha!" It's unique the way only David could come up with. I love it!
Agree! Beautiful song with exuberant power drumming and a late-sixties vibe to other parts of the sound (Traffic, Small Faces, The Byrds. Rolling Stones around the tine of "Street Fighting Man", etc)
his lyrics are always ten steps ahead of you and as soon as you think you've got it, he's a 10 years in front and if you dare to get one past him , lyrically he'll open your door and ................... nothing i can add, still working on it.
The whole world was in mourning. So true. I was working in the US when he died (I’m a Brit) , woke up to the news. It just floored me. I screenshot the news feed, just shocked, in disbelief. A true world artist. My brother is much older than me, huge Bowie fan and bizarrely they lived in the same city in Switzerland. The local cinema put on English language versions of movies and my bro was in there one day. Bowie walks in, with Imam, sits behind my bro. Bro apologised for disturbing him but just wanted to shake his hand, ‘I’m a huge fan’ sort of thing. Bowie probably had that a million times, but he was cool and polite. Amazing
I was on the Golden Gate Bridge when I heard it on the radio! I was in total shock and had nowhere to pull over and had to will 😢myself to the end of the bridge.
Bowie can more or less go anywhere. If you want some 70s Glam Rock, then the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane albums are the way to go. He even dabbles in some heavier rock with 'The Man who sold the World' album which is almost Zeppelin-esque'. 'Width of a Circle' and 'All the Madmen' are 2 of my favourites from there. Then if you want some weird ambient/experimental rock stuff, go for his Berlin era albums 'Low, Heroes, Lodger'. It's hard to say a favourite album for me, it just depends what mood you're in.
David Bowie was such an amazing artist, a chameleon. Love his cover of this old standard ballad. I don't recall him doing many ballads but he did this wonderfully!
Great reaction. This is one of my all time favourites which I first heard in the 1960s on a vinyl of my Mum's. It was written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the film of the same name in 1957. It was first recorded by Johnny Mathis for the film then released as a single reaching 22 on the Billboard chart. Many years later I heard David Bowie's version again from my Mum's record and it became my favourite version and song. It's romantic and evocative feel speaks to the beauty of Bowie's own relationship with his wife whose live continued until his tragic death. I felt very close to Bowie living in Sydenham, London England not far from his childhood home and my daughter attending the same school albeit the girls half. Sorely missed. UK 👍
Such an amazing singer... Miss you David Bowie! Word on a Wing another in the same vain... Young Americans is a great album but he has a lot of those...
I think the drummer in this song was also in the band Simple minds.I discovered this song when I was a 19 year old and I think I played it on a loop for a couple years 😂 Absolutely beautiful. Now at 61 years of age ,it still has the same impact. I absolutely love Bowie ❤
Wild Is the Wind (song) "Wild Is the Wind" is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film Wild Is the Wind. David put the song on his 1976 album....Johnny Mathis is the original singer of this song in 1957, nominated for Academy for Best Song....the song reached No. 22 on the billboard chart.
My friend Candy was in a film with David and she said she knew of him, but had never listened to his music and said she was glad she hadn't listened to his music beforehand because she probably would have fainted when he walked in the room. 😅 My personal favorite David Bowie album is SCARY MONSTERS (AND SUPER CREEPS) which has some of RobertvFripp's best work ever on it and even Pete Townsend plays on a song. It's "out there" in the best way.
Being a David Bowie fan starting in the late sixties I'm going to say my two favorite albums are first Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars and Diamond Dogs both those albums are really worth sitting down and listening cover to cover anyhow enjoy
This song is sublime. One of my favorites. I only got to see him once, it was opening night of the Serious Moonlight Tour in Philly. He filmed it for the video Modern Love from that album. Another favorite is Young Americans which he recorded in Philly. ✌️♥️🎶
Beautiful ballad, it really showcases what a good singer he was: he is getting the most out of every line without ever sounding forced or contrived. Here is another great vocal performance, from the years just before "Let's dance" when he was mostly acting in films and taking a break from major recording: the original version of "Cat People", the theme for an intriguing movie with Nastassja Kinski morphing between girl and panther (yes!). A superb film theme and Bowie really shines as a singer - this is a killer vocal show...He re-recorded the song for the Let's Dance album, with a more funk-rock sound, but the original (produced by Giorgio Moroder) is the real deal. Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (1982) with some great shots from the movie: ua-cam.com/video/n-VfQLIrwX0/v-deo.html Also, there's this wonderfully funny recounting of how Bowie went to see Adrian Belew, who was gigging with Frank Zappa at the time, and tried to recruit him to his own live band. Something that didn't quite go according to plan... ua-cam.com/video/0i0Ld6RnOLk/v-deo.html
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard - Bowie is almost Operatic here - "During the height of their fame, Nina Simone and David Bowie had struck up a strong friendship over a prolonged period of time, one which would even result in the Englishman covering Simone's glorious 'Wild Is Wild' to appear on his Station To Station album in 1976
Peak Bowie crooning - Don't You Know Your Life... Itself Nina Simone also does a comparably beautiful version. I'm not so keen on the Mathis original (although he's great). It's a beautiful love song. My vote would be the relatively early Hunky Dory, but tbh any of the 70s output- they're all outstandingly good.
Partly because the opening track on this album ("station to station", which u already listened to) is ten minutes long, , or three songs long, this whole album only has six tracks on it, & u did "stay", & now this song, making three, i highly reccomend u listen to the last 3, "tvc15", "golden years", & "word on wing"...i just say it cuz youve listened to half the album & are digging it, & youve done more than just put ur toe in, u might as well just take the full plunge, lol....anyway, great reaction as always, man.
Then youll have an album for ur playlist/collection of albums to freely listen to without having to worry about spoiling reaction material....i actually dont recommend this albums to newbs, but, when i was about two or three years into my bowie fandom, this album pretty much became my fave & it remains to this day....just my opinion, many like the next album more, which is also amazing, its just imho that this album was just the peak for me, or the start of the peak.
All rock guitar had a heavy Spanish influence I think. Some of Jimi Page's solos illustrated that better than I can say it. And a lot of others. But I'm no expert just going by the sound not breaking down chord charts.
Go back to HunkyDory - you will see how he evolved over the years. The lyrics of 5 years from the Ziggy Stardust album are almost prophetic and right up to Valentines Day on his posthumous album shows his mastery. Love the fact that you are reviewing this.
He’s responsible for telling MTV that they need to allow videos on their channel from black artists. At the beginning of the channel they didn’t allow videos from black singers to be played. His wife is black. Her name is IMAN the model.
Bowie tended to be poetic from time to time, but he had nothing to do with writing this tune. By the by, Nina Simone's version has something to offer, too.
Probably Bowie’s most romantic song. The things he does with his voice here are things only he could do. And “don’t you know you’re life itself?” since shivers up and down my spine.
Bowie not only wrote great music but also recognised a great song. He did a number of covers of other people's music
I would play this to everyone who said that Bowie can't sing
That wouldn't be many people - but you're right. Bowie once said in an interview (mid 90s), that 'Wild is The Wind' (he sang it live a few times) was as close to his natural singing voice amongst all the songs he performed in his entire career.
His live Stage album and Baal are bowies vocals at his peak.
Brilliant vocals
Bowie and T rex were the reason I picked up a guitar, then 5mins later I put it down and listened to music. Lol
Diamond Dogs!! Thanks for doing this one. He can sing! Sweet Thing suite and We Are The Dead Are worth it, so worth it.
Fabulous album
Doing the best deep cuts of Aladdin Sane (the one with the iconic cover) should expand your mind even further!
I can't wait to hear more Bowie! I think I'm hooked already lol
And there’s also a mighty Nina Simone version.
I’m pretty sure this is a song from the 1950s. It’s a beauty.
Another great choice, I saw him in cocert twice in the 70s, unforgettable great concerts ! He lived here in my hometown Berlin for a few years, after his tragic death, the street where his flat was located is named in David-Bowie-Straße.
thanks for your nice thoughts !
I saw his last ever concert in 2004, hurricane festival. he had a heart attack that day. I was a lifelong fan at that point. Feels weird.
So cool.
he is probably the greatest artist ever!
I love it!
One of my favorites and I have all his albums!
word on a wing is another great track from this album.
The song "Stay" on this album is fire. Earl Slick on a blistering guitar.
Yeah indeed, very difficult to choose a favorite Bowie, but Stay could possibly be the one!!...
Live version of Stay is the best. Bowie says " We've done this one as a rhumba & a march". Hilarious! But then they KILL it.
Check out
Bowie on the 'Dinah Shore 'tv show if you haven't seen it
Absolutely amazing!
Dennis Davis, the drummer, in his full glory: Bowie, Look Back in Anger
Agree! Beautiful song with exuberant power drumming and a late-sixties vibe to other parts of the sound (Traffic, Small Faces, The Byrds. Rolling Stones around the tine of "Street Fighting Man", etc)
Always been a favourite of mine!
My vote goes to Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) 1980. One of his best, and I love Bowie when he pushes his voice
Berlin trilogy and Scary Monsters are my favorites!
Agreed, of all the brilliant Bowie albums, that's my #1. This one's his best vocal performance for me tho!
Bowie is a seeder, his music and message grows and grows.....with age I now understand how truely unique he was.
his lyrics are always ten steps ahead of you and as soon as you think you've got it, he's a 10 years in front and if you dare to get one past him , lyrically he'll open your door and ................... nothing i can add, still working on it.

@@janewells5970 a real ‘where were you when JFK died’ moment. To me anyway
@@HT-io1eg absolutely! It was so shocking!
I cried!
I was sitting at home having breakfast when I heard the news. I'd got a feeling like my guru passed or sort of.
Word on a Wing is a beautiful track.

I've watched a lot of reaction videos, but you are one of the best. Your insights are spot on. And you are right to react to Bowie. He is a legend.
David Bowie was such an amazing artist, a chameleon. Love his cover of this old standard ballad. I don't recall him doing many ballads but he did this wonderfully!
I think you would really enjoy Look Back in Anger as it has great drums in it. It's from the Lodger album from David Bowie.
Great ride of a reaction. Made me happy. He's prime here, seasoned, and yet so much ahead too! What a talent. What a heart.
Great reaction. This is one of my all time favourites which I first heard in the 1960s on a vinyl of my Mum's. It was written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the film of the same name in 1957. This is my favourite album. After this, i love diamond dogs and then hunky dory. There are so many great bowie albums to check out.
Such an amazing singer... Miss you David Bowie! Word on a Wing another in the same vain...
Young Americans is a great album but he has a lot of those...
Great reaction Lee. Check out Nina Simone’s version…
Thanks Lee. I'm really going to enjoy this morning. RIP David Bowie, we miss you so.
You can find several live versions of Wild is the Wind by Bowie that are just as beautiful. He was so incredible.
I think the drummer in this song was also in the band Simple minds.I discovered this song when I was a 19 year old and I think I played it on a loop for a couple years 😂 Absolutely beautiful. Now at 61 years of age ,it still has the same impact. I absolutely love Bowie ❤
Can’t see any mention of HUNKY DORY. My absolute favourite album from his earlier stuff.
Wild Is the Wind (song)
"Wild Is the Wind" is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film Wild Is the Wind. David put the song on his 1976 album....Johnny Mathis is the original singer of this song in 1957, nominated for Academy for Best Song....the song reached No. 22 on the billboard chart.
David loved Scott Walker of The Walker Brothers. This reminds me of Scott Walker …
One of my favorite Bowie tracks. Thanks for doing this one!!
this song was actually written for a 1957 western by the same name. Written by Dimitri Tiomkin.
Superb Bowie cover, his voice is so moving. The B side of the vinyl 45 is a funky tune called "Golden Years", I would love to see you react to that.
My friend Candy was in a film with David and she said she knew of him, but had never listened to his music and said she was glad she hadn't listened to his music beforehand because she probably would have fainted when he walked in the room. 😅
My personal favorite David Bowie album is SCARY MONSTERS (AND SUPER CREEPS) which has some of RobertvFripp's best work ever on it and even Pete Townsend plays on a song. It's "out there" in the best way.
Agreed ❤
Nina Simone's version from 1966 is probably the version Bowie heard. It was originally the theme song for a 1955 film sung by Johnny Mathis
It was. And Bowie then recorded the ultimate version.
Being a David Bowie fan starting in the late sixties I'm going to say my two favorite albums are first Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars and Diamond Dogs both those albums are really worth sitting down and listening cover to cover anyhow enjoy

Heros from Bowie. Iconic song. Robert Fripp (from King Crimson). Broam Emp (from Roxy Music) genius, set satmospherics , synth

Was just thinking about an hour ago... "I wonder when Lee is going to listen to Wild is the Wind?" and.... there it is.

Captain Tom!!!😂
Bowie is a favourite artist of mine. A true artist can take a cover, smash it and make it their own.
He opens his 2000 BBC concert (that can be seen on here) with this - smooth as silk.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard - Bowie is almost Operatic here - "During the height of their fame, Nina Simone and David Bowie had struck up a strong friendship over a prolonged period of time, one which would even result in the Englishman covering Simone's glorious 'Wild Is Wild' to appear on his Station To Station album in 1976
This is a cover of a tune from the 50s. He did a great job.
His tribute to Nina Simone.
Really miss him 🌹♥️🎶
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Thanks for the reaction.
So glad you're experiencing all of these Legendary artists.
It shows me that you have a deep love for music as i do.
Keep exploring!
you absolutely need to react to Ziggy Stardust
Have you reviewed his
Let’s Dance? It’s very good.
This is a very old song; maybe from the forties or fifties. It’s haunting.
Nice reaction , well said 😊
Opened with this song at Glastonbury 2000 it was stunning
An absolute classic.
Next album: Ziggy!👍
There is a beautiful black and white video to this song
Beautiful, beautiful song. Check out Nina Simone's version (they were close friends)
Thats a new one to me thanks

I absolutely LOVE this!❤❤❤❤
The drowning girl of his baal ep is operatic.
I really enjoy your reactions and this was heartfelt
Bowie was music royalty.
Check out David’s song “Watch that Man”. Great song
Play “Changes” and “The Man Who Sold the World”. You will love them. 3:29
Nina Simone’s version was so moving, he makes so much nuonce with his perfection of swaying sound. I so miss him.

Brian Eno , not Broam Emp
I was wondering who?
Thanks
That had me wondering too. Wasn't Broam Emp a gunman from the late 19th century?

Produced by my good friend Harry Maslin
Really?? That's awesome! He has a very interesting sound he's going for here with each track.
Harry is a wonderful producer. His first work with Bowie is on Young Americans. He came out of the Philly soul scene..@@L33Reacts
Very much inspired by the Nina Simone cover of this song which Bowie knew.
Johnny Mathis in the 50s. Dimitri tiomski written. Bowie reserected the peice

Bowie didnt write Wild is the Wind....listen to Slow Burn
A cover: Dimitri Tiomkin / Ned Washington writers, but a beautiful version.
