About the “why didn’t the parents tell her???” That’s a real thing that happens too! My mom’s mom never explained puberty to her so when she first got her period she panicked super hard thinking she was dying. It’s a sad truth that some parents hurt their kids because they’re too afraid to talk about certain things to the point where totally normal events in their life turn traumatic.
It’s what happened to me, when I got my period it wasn’t explained until after I had it, But then again maybe it’s the fact I got it when I was nine 😭 Other things regarding puberty still wasn’t explained, i had to find out via school or the internet
oh yeah its even worse when it happens real early, moms are already for some reason bad at telling daughters abt it but especially when their kids start early like that it suuucks
"How can you not prepare her for this??" Had a classmate who didn't return to class after recess so the teacher sent a couple of girls to the bathroom to see if she was okay. We found her in one of the stalls desperately dabbing herself with toilet paper and crying because she thought she had serious internal bleeding. She was 12 and had no idea what menstruation was. That was back in the 90s but you'd be surprised how many folks still don't prepare their young girls for this and it's so frustrating because this is kinda inevitable. Not talking about menstruation does not prevent menstruation; it just leaves a young girl confused and scared.
Man I was 12 with a broken hand and I had started and I was calling for my mom, she came in 5 minutes later bc she thought a pipe burst 🤦♀️ like no girl Im bleeding here 😭
I'm South African and in my last year of high school I had to help one of the younger girls get to the hospital after she passed out in the bathrooms. My cousin, a nurse, later told me that she'd been going into toxic shock because she'd been plugging herself up with tp because she was scared her parents would punish her. The most surprising part was that she was a white girl. Most of us thought white people were better with things like this but human experiences are universal ig.
Then maybe the kids shouldn't dismiss anatomy as boring and pointless, because it ultimately results in this "boy who cried wolf" stuff as the actually important info comes to bite them.
@@ARCtheCartoonMasterSome places straight don't teach sexual anatomy or reproduction as part of their curriculum. I was the only kid in 6th grade who knew how fertilization worked cause I actually flipped through our textbook instead of just reading the assigned material. This isn't the kids' fault. Blame parents for not teaching their kids, and blame the administration for making it part of the curriculum.
This movie explains puberty for females soooo well. Its so creative to choose a panda as a code for periods/puberty. You get hairy (like a panda) , you bleed (red). you have mood swings like anger (like an animal), your sweat smells different (smelly like a panda), its just so creative well done pixar and you guys are great, keep up the good work :)
It's funny because I saw conservatives bitching about the representation, "hijabs and turbans everywhere," while it was basically 20-30 seconds of the movie.
@@p-forest Even if they were "everywhere", how would that be a problem? XD I mean it might have been inaccurate in 2002 Canada, but still not a problem.
From what I've seen, the movie got some backlash when it came out for three main reasons. The first is people were upset about how the film talks about puberty, particularly the scene in the bathroom early on. Basically puritans and conservatives who think it's a tabboo subject that shouldn't be discussed openly, and the types of parents who'd prefer to raise their kids never telling them the things they need to know because it's "too awkward". The second reason I saw was people hated that Mei "needed the panda to be happy", which is bullshit because she was already happy to begin with. It also completely misses the point of her decision to keep it - she didn't GET the panda, she refused to give it up. The panda was always part of her, like an innate talent for music or art, and rather than shutting it away like some might do, she embraced it. The third was parents unhappy that Mei stood up to authority and rebelled against her mother without being punished. This one speaks for itself - insecure parents whose children I worry for.
There was this one Christian guy who was pissed off that the movie depicted a non-christian religion based on reverence for ancestors rather than solely for a single god.
I'm intersex but still went through female "growing pains" and my mother never explained it to me, I remember thinking I was bleeding out from the inside between how much blood there was and how much it hurt. Parents need to explain these things to their children, hiding it only makes it more traumatic
Two things I love: 1) when Mei decides to keep the panda and runs off, everyone immediately starts bitching at Ming but the second they realize her panda is breaking free every one of them immediately panics. and 2) the photo with the band at the end, I love that Ming does the previous generation's cutesy pose for the photo. It's such a little thing but it amuses me.
24:40 That's the problem for many girls out there: our mothers never talk with us about puberty and periods until it's too late. For most girls I know, their first period felt like a very traumatizing, shameful thing that came out of nowhere.
I loveeee this movie. I love how through Tyler's wording, you can tell hes a bully because hes lonely. "If you're there, everyone will come. simple as that."
What I love about this movie is that the relationship between Mei and her mom is good but it’s flawed. I love that it’s not that her mom is an abuser or an absolutely horrible mother- it’s just that her experiences with her own mother and her overbearing parenting style has caused the cracks to show in their relationship but they do love each other. It’s natural for as kids to get older for relationships between children and their parents to change and need some adjusting- and it showed that even when things get messy sometimes that helps bring the family to a healthier place ❤❤
I like that y'all commented on your experiences growing up as boys and being shamed for liking boy bands. It really makes me sad. Everyone should feel free to like whatever they like and I'm so glad our society is moving to a better place now!!
My fave thing about this movie is the arc of Tyler. Even when the girls saw him at the concert they didn’t bully or mock him but embraced him and he gained some real friends who accepted him for who he is. So many bullies get ‘comeuppance’ in these films but this was a nice change.
There was a lot hate on this movie because they were OUTRAGED that an animated film would dare to bring up the topic of a woman's menstrual cycle. Then they accused the movie of only being about that and not the complications of going through puberty and all that jazz.
Mei Mei's embarrassment regarding her own feelings is largely attached to the societal expectations of young girls. When you think of puberty for boys most people think "horny teens" whereas for girls it's usually "emotional/moody" etc. I feel like that's also why this movie didn't do well. Adults do NOT like to think of young girls thinking/having sexual feelings or thoughts. Even H-man (?) was like "I understand the Mom when she finds the drawings." Mei's behavior is normal - people just have a hard time accepting female sexuality because they want girls to be sweet, proper and "innocent." As this entire movie is Mei (and her friends) growing up and having hormonal reactions (including attraction) a lot of people didn't want their kids to watch it.
I think the mom thought she might have been being groomed. It’s reasonable to be concerned, but all that required was some questions to confirm it’s innocent. She handled that situation awfully.
Exactly, like I think it was the dude on the bottom left who even said he didn't think Mei's drawing were normal, when as someone who has seen and read quite a few horny fanfics on Wattpad from 12-14 year olds having been one myself, Mei's feelings are completely normal, and I'm so glad Turning Red decided to show that and contribute towards normalising such feelings for young girls in societies that try to stigmatise it. Anyone who has a problem with that are invalid.
@@GoldenWreck Yeah, I drew MUCH hornier stuff at that age. And the thing about "where is she getting the inspiration from?" kinda rubbed me the wrong way. You don't need inspiration for that. I didn't know shit about sex when I was 13, that didn't stop me from writing the cringiest fanfic "sex scenes" you'll ever *not* read. I had never had sex, never watched porn, didn't understand how bodies worked, and barely paid attention in sex ed, but I knew my body had places that felt good when I touched them, and holes you could put stuff in. It's not rocket science. And at a certain age you just sit at your desk and shift back and forth on your chair and notice something feels good down there. And then your parents walk in and, instead of being taught about masturbation being a normal thing, you're just told not to do that, so, of course, you do it in secret and feel bad about it. I hate how we as a society seem to think girls are "pure" until they're "corrupted". A girl (or anyone for that matter, but it's usually girls/afab people who get talked about in this way) starting to develop feelings like that doesn't mean there's some "corrupting influence". It's just puberty. It's not like we suddenly become sexual beings at 18, after being completely oblivious to the topic before. It's always: "Boys will be boys", but girls? No, there has to be some deeper reason, they couldn't possibly have developed an interest in sex on their own! Not our pure, precious babies! Sorry for the rant, didn't mean for it to get that long 😅
@@ichbinben. No don't worry I appreciate the time you took to share all your thoughts, and reflect your sentiments exactly. I myself was very young, before I was 10 when I discovered what felt nice for me. And like you were saying it's absolutely absurd that the concept of purity is projected upon girls, to the point people don't consider that sexual feelings are just as natural for them as it is for boys especially when going through puberty. But I'm glad there are always people like you alongside myself who see through such bull double standards and are always ready to call them out.
thank you for saying this! I'm not a woman but I am a trans guy who didn't realize it until I was 20 so I am _very_ familiar with the frustration and shame of being a young horny teen being made to feel as though those feelings were abnormal or shameful for a "girl" to have. it was incredibly frustrating listening to that whole conversation about how concerning it'd supposedly be for a 13 year old girl to be drawing muscley boys hugging her
One of the many things I love about this movie is that even though it's about a teenage girl who's very boy crazy and feels infatuated with different boys throughout the movie, it doesn't become the main focus. Like, it doesn't suddenly turn into a teen love story. Instead it's more about a girl feeling torn between two different worlds, her family and friends, and struggling to honor her family while being true to herself. It makes for a great story and adding a love interest would've been unnecessary
This movie was such an accurate representation of how I was with my Backstreet Boys fangirl friends 😂 can confirm, the concert vibe was accurate. I remember them flying over the audience on futuristic board things during Larger Than Life and I was screaming entirely too much while holding my sign that could not hold on to all the glitter I had dumped on it😂 Watched this movie with my sons (ages 5 and 9 at the time of viewing) and while it is not their favorite Pixar film, they both really loved it and even my 5 year old was able draw comparisons between myself and the ladies in the film with hormones and periods and the like (I am a very open parent with them and we have casual but clinical body talks sometimes as a means to try and normalize these things). My now 10 year old is on the cusp of those big body changes and this film was a great portal into having those conversations
As a kid I remember when I was a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys while my cousin loved NSYNC 😆 We would be singing and jamming out to both groups over the summer as kids til my older brother told us to go play outside for a bit, haha.
From what I can tell, the mom's first transformation occurred when she was older than Mei Mei. So she really did think she had a few more years. Not that that is a good reason. You better late than never, but early is better.
As a Canadian, I actually never put it together that our money sounded like Loony Tunes lol 😂 I always automatically think about the pretty bird called a loon that the $1 coin was named after. But that IS pretty funny. (Not offended at all btw) the money does sound stupid when I look at it from an outside view 😂
this movie was beautifully done representation and portrayal of puberty for girls as well as generational trauma. it was so relatable for a lot of people, particularly poc (though generational trauma certainly exits for some caucasian families, it's more common with poc families due to their unique struggles), many mentioned how they and their parents came out of the theater crying, and for some it helped them to better connect with and understand their parents/children. :) it's a very fun movie for one with such deep and meaningful undertones, and it definitely deserves its award nominations!
And for those who think that this movie is not appropriate for children, first, it doesn't even deal directly with puberty or periods, it talks about a girl with the power of metamorphosis into a red panda. Second, I have seen cases of girls having their periods at 8 years old, I think it is necessary to start talking about this in childhood.
This actually nominated for an Oscar alongside Puss in Boots 2 and Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio (another great movie you guys should definitely peep!)
Every time I see a reaction to this movie, I am reminded of just how ridiculously good this is. The allegory, the mysticism, the awesome anime influences..... easily one of Pixar's best movies.
You guys should definitely watch the Mitchell’s vs the machines. The producers of spiderverse worked on this movie and even Alex hirch, the creator of gravity falls, and Michael rianda, the creator of the film and who worked on some of the jokes on gravity falls, are part of this film too! It’s a heartfelt family movie and it’s downright hilarious!
I wonder if you have been mixing up the red panda with the tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog). They're different animals. The giant round table with the Lazy Susan in the middle is a favored table in many Asian households. You put the food on the Lazy Susan and the guests can spin the thing to get to the food that they want. Dad is the king of...understatement. Also the understated MVP in this movie (being quietly supportive of his wife and daughter).
not sure if it was confirmed, but I agree with H-Man that the size of one's panda correlates with how much of yourself you repress, hence why the mother is maaaaassive, she must have had a lot on her shoulders as a kid
As a Woman, I can tell the guy top left of the screen. Girls Mature faster then boys so we are into boys at 12-14. While boys, I believe, start at 14-16. 2nd, I'm glad you men all got the TOTAL mortification of the 'Drawings' and 'Pads' part. Honestly I gasped and covered my mouth in honest to God shock and horror when the Pads part came up.
yeah id suggest you guys teach your daughters slowly about it from around 10 years, and make sure youre prepared, and especially make sure the mom plans to explain, because it feels horrible starting female puberty and no one explaining and just giving you a little its gonna be ok without having prepared you in the least before it happens
and while yes 10 years old sounds young, it is! some people start QUITE early and even earlier than that, but 10 is a good average age to start at, dont glorify it either but just let them know itll be a little painful but youll be there for them, thats more than most girls had and theyll appreciate support when theyre older and go thru it
I for one loved this movie when it came out and still love it now. I don’t think this movie gets enough credit in several regards including the concepts that are relatable ones.
18:24 Good guess. There is a theory that the reason Ming's panda was so big was because of all the emotions that she repressed. It just kept building and building until it was kaiju size. Depending on how much they are suppressing is how big the panada will be.
Sorry but Encanto and luca are not realistic the movies with realism are something like toy story 4 soul and wall e. Cartoony art styles are pretty common even with ignoring hybrid art styles.
One reason you might have missed it it’s because it’s a Disney Pixar film but it came out straight to Disney Plus. Which is a shame it could have been a theater hit. Also Ruff is not wrong about the parent circle and the negative comments. Lots of conservative parents complained saying the movie is too inappropriate for kids to and that it’s about rebellion and not listening to your parents. Pretty dumb reasons. But I work with elementary and preschool kids. They all love this film. And I played the 4town songs for them for a couple of months. They were so into it and loved everything about the film.
haha my grandma had 14 kids so I actually thought this was a small family. also: i know you were hoping for more with the grandma but you have to remember the cultural context of the film. Sometimes there's still a barrier even when things are moving forward.
I’m kinda happy and proud cuz I rarely see reactors checking out the hidden messages or details while watching, until I watch this channels. Mostly they just watch watch, not thinking much of the plots or messages. You guys pointed out a lot of tiny details. *Good job!* 🏆👏
The actual damage to the SkyDome was shown as one hundred million dollars on that big chart, not ten thousand as that one man said. I actually thought a hundred million seemed too high.
7:43 What fell on your head!?😂 39:35 yes our coins are called Loonies and Toonies, but may i remind you that our money can go through the wash is hard to rip and tear. It's waterproof. Your money is literal paper. No matter what we call ours or it's colours, the fact that it's not easily destructible makes it better. (I know you're joking, but I have to be a proud Canadian when the moment presents itself😅🇨🇦)
So the issue with the movie was that Disney opted to release it straight to Disney Plus so it had that "Direct to Video" stigma about it and didn't get as much word of mouth as if it was a theatrical release. The old CEO wanted things to make D+ "pop" but he was cutting off his nose to spite his face kinda thing where he was putting some of their best content straight to D+. Dood was an idiot lol, this movie is incredible I remember watching it and loving it!

As a past kid who grew up with split-up parents, strict parenting seems very wrong to me. I had one strict parent and one laid-back. Laid back but involved, kinda like how the blond girl's parents comes across in this movie. I was trying to be perfect for the strict one, but I was scared of them and honestly am still quite wary as an adult. I never know what is good enough for them and what will make them annoyed. While my other parent I trust and open up to. I'm not as scared to make mistakes either so I feel comfortable and like hanging out with them. I remember getting whiplash moving back and forth between the homes. The rules and expectations would change so much. I would accidentally break rules with the strict one, and walk around on imaginary eggshells with the laidback one. I definitely hid my period from the strict one lol I failed, of course, it's hard to hide bloody clothes. But I was just too scared to tell them. (The strict one isn't a bad person, its just my experience growing up under their parenting)
This movie got caught between over-controlling parents being mad because they thought the movie encouraged their kids to disrespect their parents, some grown people being weird about kids possibly learning what a period is, and this one dude’s review about how he couldn’t relate to the movie because he said it looked like the movie was made just for the director and her friends. That was basically all of the online drama, which was all very silly. It’s a really great and fun movie.
we have red pandas at my zoo and they are quite small and literally the cutest. one of my favorite animals. they really are kind of raccoon sized haha.
@@paulchapman8023 they aren't, no. red pandas are from ailuridae which is made up of only red pandas and their extinct ancestors. it's possible that they share ancestry with raccoons, though, but they're not directly related.
I love when Mei meets the ancestor. Her face t he e first time was so annoyed as if she was saying, "oh great another one of my descendants refusing this amazing gift I worked so hard to give them." And then at the end she looked so happy that someone finally kept the gift 🥹
I loved this movie so much. As a young Chinese girl with… I wouldn’t say controlling but a very protective and at times micromanaging mother I felt so seen. I ugly cry every time I see the scene with Mei and her mother at the portal thingy. I also cry whenever Mei looks in the mirror and says “This won’t happen again” for having romantic emotions. I relate to that. 😢 This movie was cringe as hell but it made me laugh so hard. Forever one of my favs
The reason that people hated on this movie had nothing to do with the movie and everything to do with it being written and directed by a woman and the lead being a girl going through puberty. There was a whole section of the so-called "manosphere" freaking the hell out because anything woman-centered frightens them.
i remember when i first had my period i thought i injured myself so bad i panicked inside the church bathroom and used toilet paper and was too scared to tell my mom until the next day.
I remember my mom trying to tell me how having that time of the month worked lol it wasn’t fun xD this movie kinda helped that inner child that had to deal with it in middle school 😂
The first time I watched this movie I did think it was a little bit cringy and over the top but then I actually thought about it. I was a little under 13 in 2002 and grew up less than an hour away from Toronto, with a somewhat controlling, high expectations family, it's pretty on point. On the note of being a Canadian I find it so funny every time some one jokes about Canada not being real and is confused by our loonies and toonies
Great reaction guys, also when it comes to the size your panda is, it's not connected to your feelings or how big your feelings are, it's pretty random, like with regular people you got some that are born 5'5 and they're family is usually 6'3, it's the same case in this but, on a drastic scale in the moms case, as far as I know, she's the only one in her family lineage that has ever grown that large
Great movie! I fit none of the demographics that the movie is directly aimed at but I still appreciated it. One note: racoon dogs (called tanuki in Japan, featured in the Studio Ghibli movie "Pom Poko") are a different species than red pandas. Though they are probably more closely related to each other than either is to a panda. And both are relatively small.
11:24 please don’t anyone make fun or judge me for this. When I was 16 years old I imagined myself having sex with Tea Gardener from Yugioh and I wrote the details of it in my journal. Then later thrashed it in fear my mom would accidentally find out
This movie was totally aimed at older Millennials who were young teens in 2000 and have kids just now in middle school. I'm 70 years old, but my daughter was a young teen at that time, so I'm aware of what was going on with her then. I adore this movie.
I love this movie so much. Thankfully my mom prepared me for my period before I got it, but I know so many women whose parents didn’t. (My mom’s didn’t, and she thought she was dying, which is why she made sure I knew what would happen.) and I’ve never seen a movie capture that “fangirling” feeling. It’s such a good movie for young women.
Half of the comment section on Hansen's MmBop music video is 35 year old guys confessing that even though they made fun of their sisters for liking it, secretly they loved it, too. But no UA-cam back in 1997!
I deadass watched this movie the other day and honestly. The music bangs “4-Town”. Is basically the representation of bts (don’t hate me for that comparison just my opinion). But Fr tho. Had this happen to one of my sisters but she was told about her time of the month but when it came she got scared and so my other sister had to explain it to her again and she relaxed because she thought she was dying and honestly that’s messed up lowkey. The movie really captures every change and emotion it’s so good. Like the saying goes “Haters Gon’ Hate.” But this movie is great not good but great. So yeah all good. Love the reaction to this movie.
Awh, man, when I got my period for the first time I had no idea what was happening. Thanks to the extremely weak and wasteful Sex Ed programs at my school (that had absolutely no consistency) I knew that girls had periods, but I didn't know what a period was. I didn't know there'd be bleeding or pain, all I knew was that it meant I was capable of getting pregnant. So when my period came, I hid it for three days trying to figure out how to tell my absentee and despondent mom that I needed medical help. I luckily could talk to my older sister over MSN about it, and she explained it. In the end, I felt so much worse about hiding it from my mom. Still struggle to tell her things, and I'm in my mid-to-late twenties now.
Awww yiss, I watch all reactions to this film ❤️ Edit: yes it is a Thundercats reference. There are quite a few nods to popular shows in the movie. Also, the negative feedback was because it was about "puberty", it was dumb. So yeaaah. Hope you guys saw the post credits scene
There are also 5 people in the backstreet boys🤷♀️. They also came together in 93 and are still producing albums which is kinda impressive. Also, my 8 year old(it came out when she was 7) right away goes omg she's a panda she got her period. This is exactly how a backstreet boys concert was
haha honestly I feel the mermaid sketch or riding on the unicorn would make me confident this was just fantasy doodling... and honestly that's the LEAST a parent would have to worry about seeing. haha I feel when your kid hits there teen years, the Knock before you enter thing is reallly for YOUR sake as much as theirs T___T
The creators stated that Mei drew them as Mermen because she's so innocent and sheltered she can't think of what else to draw on a nude lower-half, but that IS what she was thinking of.
I'm reading comments from people who's perents never told them what a period is but when I was younger my perents did explain it to me but I think i was too stupid to understand cause when I got my first one I just ignored it😅😂 I put on different pants, ignored the pains and I didn't tell anyone. Also a racoon dog (tanuki) and red panda are 2 different animals (just wanted to clear it up) 👍
Me, I discovered my mom's tampons in the toilets when I was young so I asked her about it and that's when she explained it to me. I had my first periods at 12 but I didn't panicked because I was aware
This makes me so nostalgic lol this was me in middle school to a T. Although I am a few years younger than the girls in this movie, it applies. This is one of the only kids movies to describe adolescence and puberty so accurately, I feel like anyone from any decade can relate.
Y'all didn't hear / heard negative things about this movie due to a combination of Disney not promoting Pixar the way they promote their own animations (compare marketing of Encanto vs Turning Red), and SOME parents being turned off that this movie dare discuss periods, teenage crushes, and other female issues. I'm glad y'all found it eventually. You all looked like you had so much fun watching & reflecting on childhood

That was back in the 90s but you'd be surprised how many folks still don't prepare their young girls for this and it's so frustrating because this is kinda inevitable. Not talking about menstruation does not prevent menstruation; it just leaves a young girl confused and scared.
That basically happened to me 😢 I was crying in the stall thinking I was dying because of the first bleeding and cramps.
Man I was 12 with a broken hand and I had started and I was calling for my mom, she came in 5 minutes later bc she thought a pipe burst 🤦♀️ like no girl Im bleeding here 😭

And another one being that they didn't portray anything about 9/11.
@@harnanmylvaganam6311 i thought we were past this
I'm intersex but still went through female "growing pains" and my mother never explained it to me, I remember thinking I was bleeding out from the inside between how much blood there was and how much it hurt.
What makes me love the first moment more is that while everyone else is bitching at Ming Jin just tries to comfort her
24:40 That's the problem for many girls out there: our mothers never talk with us about puberty and periods until it's too late. For most girls I know, their first period felt like a very traumatizing, shameful thing that came out of nowhere.
I loveeee this movie. I love how through Tyler's wording, you can tell hes a bully because hes lonely. "If you're there, everyone will come. simple as that."
And he always starts messing with Mei in front of witnesses (dodgeball game, calling for her on the roof are two examples)
Believe it or not, parents become OBLIVOUS to how embarrassing they can be, especially when their overprotectiveness instincts kick in
My fave thing about this movie is the arc of Tyler. Even when the girls saw him at the concert they didn’t bully or mock him but embraced him and he gained some real friends who accepted him for who he is. So many bullies get ‘comeuppance’ in these films but this was a nice change.
Well it makes sense that they didn’t do that, considering what happened when they last saw him.
The father is just amazing. Just a few lines and he almost stole the movie. And his after credits scene is just hilarious.
There was a lot hate on this movie because they were OUTRAGED that an animated film would dare to bring up the topic of a woman's menstrual cycle. Then they accused the movie of only being about that and not the complications of going through puberty and all that jazz.
This is more boy band. Soul was the one with the jazz. /j
I'm not a woman but I am a trans guy who didn't realize it until I was 20 so I am _very_ familiar with the frustration and shame of being a young horny teen being made to feel as though those feelings were abnormal or shameful for a "girl" to have. it was incredibly frustrating listening to that whole conversation about how concerning it'd supposedly be for a 13 year old girl to be drawing muscley boys hugging her
red pandas when they're surprised throw their hands up as well which i thought was such a good detail that's so easy to miss
32:12 They run a temple. You see the cats roaming around in a lot of shots. That's where the kittens come from
One of the many things I love about this movie is that even though it's about a teenage girl who's very boy crazy and feels infatuated with different boys throughout the movie, it doesn't become the main focus. Like, it doesn't suddenly turn into a teen love story. Instead it's more about a girl feeling torn between two different worlds, her family and friends, and struggling to honor her family while being true to herself. It makes for a great story and adding a love interest would've been unnecessary
You've gotta remember the mom is an exaggerated portrayal of the overbearing tiger mom. I can actually imagine my mom doing what this mom does.
This movie was such an accurate representation of how I was with my Backstreet Boys fangirl friends 😂 can confirm, the concert vibe was accurate. I remember them flying over the audience on futuristic board things during Larger Than Life and I was screaming entirely too much while holding my sign that could not hold on to all the glitter I had dumped on it😂
Watched this movie with my sons (ages 5 and 9 at the time of viewing) and while it is not their favorite Pixar film, they both really loved it and even my 5 year old was able draw comparisons between myself and the ladies in the film with hormones and periods and the like (I am a very open parent with them and we have casual but clinical body talks sometimes as a means to try and normalize these things).
The Group: yeah, we're calling all the plot beats in the first 10 minutes
The plot beats: LMAO
I feel really bad that this movie didn’t get a theatrical release that it deserved.
From what I can tell, the mom's first transformation occurred when she was older than Mei Mei. So she really did think she had a few more years. Not that that is a good reason. You better late than never, but early is better.
As a Canadian, I actually never put it together that our money sounded like Loony Tunes lol 😂
I always automatically think about the pretty bird called a loon that the $1 coin was named after.
Second, I have seen cases of girls having their periods at 8 years old, I think it is necessary to start talking about this in childhood.
i had my period at 8 years old and now im 9 years old and im having my period in 17 days
It’s a heartfelt family movie and it’s downright hilarious!
uP UP UP
i think they'd really like it!
I think Dana terrace also a part of the movie but she didn't got any mentions.
Her mother is what you call a Tiger Mom. Hence, the over reacting to almost everything.
not sure if it was confirmed, but I agree with H-Man that the size of one's panda correlates with how much of yourself you repress, hence why the mother is maaaaassive, she must have had a lot on her shoulders as a kid
Honestly I gasped and covered my mouth in honest to God shock and horror when the Pads part came up.
yeah id suggest you guys teach your daughters slowly about it from around 10 years, and make sure youre prepared, and especially make sure the mom plans to explain, because it feels horrible starting female puberty and no one explaining and just giving you a little its gonna be ok without having prepared you in the least before it happens
and while yes 10 years old sounds young, it is! some people start QUITE early and even earlier than that, but 10 is a good average age to start at, dont glorify it either but just let them know itll be a little painful but youll be there for them, thats more than most girls had and theyll appreciate support when theyre older and go thru it
@@raineLenselol i started at 9
@@Pinkiepieisawsome I think the younger generations are getting their periods much earlier than previous generations
Yooooo Turning Red!! It’s kind of refreshing to see a movie with … non realistic graphics? It does feel like a young kiddo’s mind-
Sorry but Encanto and luca are not realistic the movies with realism are something like toy story 4 soul and wall e.
7:43 What fell on your head!?😂
39:35 yes our coins are called Loonies and Toonies, but may i remind you that our money can go through the wash is hard to rip and tear.
Dood was so dumb he got kicked out of Disney and replaced with his own predecessor
@@ma.2089 Lol yeah Igor picked him to be his successor cause on paper he was a good fit and then after like a year or two in the seat he came back for his throne like "My bad ya'll I fucked up on that one" haha.
Loonies and twonies are just like a nickname for 1$ and 2$ but the actual curency is the canadian dollar (CAD)
This is like the tenth Turning Red reaction I've watched, and I loved enjoying it vicariously - again! - with you guys. As you can see from the comments, this masterpiece is acquiring thousands of new fans everyday.
Awoooga!
Turning Red is such an incredible film! You guys are really entertaining together and I appreciated your point of view and discussions.
Not to mention certain religion groups lol I love this movie
And that one weirdo who said it wasn’t realistic because they never mentioned 9/11
Momzilla is what I called the mom in her panda form lol
I’m so happy that they reacted to this movie!
Not him thinking red pandas was actually that size! Lmao 🤣
we have red pandas at my zoo and they are quite small and literally the cutest. one of my favorite animals. they really are kind of raccoon sized haha.
Aren’t red pandas the same… genus? family?… as raccoons?
@@paulchapman8023 they aren't, no. red pandas are from ailuridae which is made up of only red pandas and their extinct ancestors. it's possible that they share ancestry with raccoons, though, but they're not directly related.
Fun Fact: Racoon dogs are Tanuki, this is a red panda
I love when Mei meets the ancestor. Her face t he e first time was so annoyed as if she was saying, "oh great another one of my descendants refusing this amazing gift I worked so hard to give them." And then at the end she looked so happy that someone finally kept the gift 🥹
I feel luke Eric and Abby would have a great time together
They are both so chaotic and energetic
I loved this movie so much. As a young Chinese girl with… I wouldn’t say controlling but a very protective and at times micromanaging mother I felt so seen. I ugly cry every time I see the scene with Mei and her mother at the portal thingy. I also cry whenever Mei looks in the mirror and says “This won’t happen again” for having romantic emotions. I relate to that. 😢
This movie was cringe as hell but it made me laugh so hard. Forever one of my favs
Can you guys react to Luca? It’s also a really well animated movie just like turning red. I think you guys would love it 😁
That ending battle was absolutely the best part of this film!! Godzilla vs Ming when??
The reason that people hated on this movie had nothing to do with the movie and everything to do with it being written and directed by a woman and the lead being a girl going through puberty.
There was a whole section of the so-called "manosphere" freaking the hell out because anything woman-centered frightens them.
i remember when i first had my period i thought i injured myself so bad i panicked inside the church bathroom and used toilet paper and was too scared to tell my mom until the next day.
Me, I was in the toilets of my home when I noticed I had mine (I was 12) but I didn't panicked because my mother explained me years ago about it
29:32 That laugh gets me every time 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yoo I never even notice Tyler at the end, he blended in so well with the group lol
I remember my mom trying to tell me how having that time of the month worked lol it wasn’t fun xD this movie kinda helped that inner child that had to deal with it in middle school 😂
50:07 the thing falling on his head lol!!
As someone who moved to Canada a few months ago… yeah, my shock when I found out loonies and toonies are an actual thing was the same as yours 😂
I legit tear up at the mom as a teen in the bamboo forest.
That whole rant about CDs makes him the Gabby of the four.
Thank you all for connecting with us boys who had to listen to boy bands in secret. Thank you SO much for making us feel seen!
4 is a bad number because in Chinese it sounds to close to the word death.
Best Pixar movie about puberty.
Awww yiss, I watch all reactions to this film ❤️
Edit: yes it is a Thundercats reference.
This is exactly how a backstreet boys concert was
You have to watch inside out you will cry your eyes so hard cause it’s that emotional
People give hate because it mentions periods
I still don't understand why peopke groan about it
haha honestly I feel the mermaid sketch or riding on the unicorn would make me confident this was just fantasy doodling... and honestly that's the LEAST a parent would have to worry about seeing. haha I feel when your kid hits there teen years, the Knock before you enter thing is reallly for YOUR sake as much as theirs T___T
The creators stated that Mei drew them as Mermen because she's so innocent and sheltered she can't think of what else to draw on a nude lower-half, but that IS what she was thinking of.
My favorite part is this 😂😂 22:38
I love that they mentioned the Backstreet Boys. I’ve loved BSB since I was 4 and I was born in 95 haha
22:34 what were the odd XD
5:03 I NEVER NOTICED they named the panda statues bart and lisa..like…the Simpson…bart and lisa
H-Man not kissing his homies saddened me deeply
Us too
I love how *every* reactor for this movie makes a comment about the perfectly drawn circle.
Much of the soundtrack and the Four Town songs were written by Billie Eilish and her brother Fineas.
hahaha.
48:18 What an edit!😂
Y'all didn't hear / heard negative things about this movie due to a combination of Disney not promoting Pixar the way they promote their own animations (compare marketing of Encanto vs Turning Red), and SOME parents being turned off that this movie dare discuss periods, teenage crushes, and other female issues.
I'm glad y'all found it eventually. You all looked like you had so much fun watching & reflecting on childhood
Thats from the last year. hope you could see PINOCCHIO from Guillermo del Toro is the 3rd nominated
It's such a well made movie. I laughed hard and cried harder
loonies = $1 coin (because it has a loon on it), toonies = $2 coin (two-nies), our paper money is dollars just like yours
Canadians are so silly, I wish they were real
