Not only this movie became a heartfelt film for my familia,me,and my ancestors that came from Mexico, but it warmed my heart & made my eyes swell in tears for the emotion, heart, and the spirit of my Mexican heritage & culture, even my favorite holiday,Dia De Los Muertos. When I was a kid,I heard stories from my family about our Mexican culture, traditions, music, and our familias that changed our lives.
The big celebration is actually in November the 2nd. Mexican families usually set up an altar in Octuber 27 if you ever had loss a pet, so we place the picture of our dead pet and a dish with his favorite treats and food and it's toys. Then we keep adding the picture of our love ones depending on how they deceased. On the 28 is for the ones they loss their lives tragicaly, the 29 is for the ones who died drowned in the water, in the 30th we just ligth some candles for the forgotten ones, in the 31st is for the kids, the 1st is for the saints ones and in the 2nd is for every one, that's when every mexican family gather all together in the cementery with food, drinks and music to celebrate our memories with them when they were alived. Greeting from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. 😊
The dog, Dante is a breed called Xoloitzcuintli, or xolo for short. (Also known as the Mexican hairless). Xolo dogs are native to Mexico and were an important part of Mesoamerican culture because they were seen as a good companion, they were used as a treatmeant for the Ill and their body warmth was regarded as therapeutic when they laid in bed at someone’s feet. More importantly were also known as guides in the Aztec afterlife. They are a rare breed today and they remain quite primitive in their characteristics, they were close to extinction a couple times but thankfully they are still on earth with us. 🤍
@@GalaxyGeeks Y'all should check her art out, if you get the chance. She did a lot of surreal art that were reflections of her own inner struggle and pain. A lot of self-portraits. She was a very complex and interesting woman! I would have loved to have met her.
Probably was sent to afterlife by his family as a gift in the ofrendas of that year... It is believed that everything you put in the ofrendas passes to the other side to them 🤗✨
I like how Hector gets the spirit version of his Guitar from Miguel at the end. It's the final thing he gets back from all that De La Cruz stole: His family. His songs. His fame, and his guitar. By the end of the movie Hector has reclaimed them all.
I love this movie but the real magic is how that guitar stayed in tune after the being hung up on that wall for so many years and then taking a beating.
Disney/Pixar really paid attention to detail, also the respect they paid to Mexico (my country) also the day of the dead in Mexico is Nov. 2nd, Nov. 1st we celebrate all saint's day and also the little ones who died too soon we also call that day "dia de los angelitos" or little angel's day.
In Mexico we celebrated the day of the dead (Día de Los muertos) on both November 1st and 2nd. November 1st is when the children arrive (we called them the angels) then on November 2nd is when the adults arrive. Most people would celebrate on the 2nd because they only have adult family which have passed. If you have young kids which have passed then you celebrate both. You should watch “ El Pib “ a short film which explain this as well.
I cry every time that song is played, and Coco responds. :) You're so very right, music can bring people back to their happiest times, and it really does bring them out of that twilight. It's our must-watch every year, usually while we're putting up our own home altar.
That´s so sweet! Although here in the north of Mexico it is not customary to set up altars for the dead, as in the south of the country, we share the same meaning of this celebration, which is a celebration of life and generational transcendence, so this movie touch me deeply and always. always makes me tear up with gratitude of my ancestors and family. Greetings from Mexico and Blessed be!
@@AvatarPrimus Same to you! My husband's family immigrated to Mexico from Spain, and his grandmother was fully indigenous. He taught me about the Mexican traditions.
That scene never fails to make me cry. One of my best friends lost her Mother to Alzheimer's and I saw the way she just faded over the years. I was with her the first time she forgot who her daughter was and how much that devastated her. So that moment when Coco remembers her daughter gets me every time. Additionally, Ernesto's punishment will be FAR worse than being forgotten. As the story spreads, fewer and fewer people will put up pictures of him, until eventually he will no longer be able to cross over. WHich means no more wealth of offerings. He will, become broke and destitute. But worse, he will not be forgotten. People will tell stories passed down in history books and stories and songs, so that he will still be there in the afterlife for generations. Villains tend to be remembered longer than heroes. And if the "final death" is just the spirits passing on to the true afterlife, then he will be denied that for a very long time, until he will want to end his misery but cannot.
This is a gem of a movie. The story is good, the animation and designs are great, the songs are amazing, and god this movie really knows how to gut punch you right in the feels
This was the first video I watched from you guys and wow it was heart wrenching. Definitely subscribed. Also, I love Coco because music is super important to my family. My grandfather passed away from cancer and he was pretty much like Mama Coco toward the end, but playing his favourite song would stir something in him. He used to walk through the house singing Time to Say Goodbye and he loved opera and ABBA, so anytime I hear that it will always bring memories of him. I am also grateful to him for introducing me to great music and amazing movies. Great reaction :)
The dog Dante is from a breed originally from Mexico, the xoloitzcuintle (Xolo or Cholo), which is believed to be in charge of taking souls to the mictlan (world of the dead), which is why it can go from the world of the living to the of the dead
Frida Kahlo, who lived in the first half of the 20th century, was amazing Mexican painter who did many self-portraits with her famous unibrow. Many had fantastical elements to them. She was very into questioning stereotypes and used her paintings to embody questions of postcolonialism, as well as gender, race, and so on. She was ahead of her time. I have always liked most of her work.
I'm so sorry and understand completely! thank you for letting us know and honestly thank you for watching our video! I hope in a small way it can bring you some joy
Coco, beautiful movie, the best. Everytime, literally everytime I watch the scene of Miguel singing "Remember Me" to Mama Coco, i cry, missing and remember my Papang, and all my love ones who passed. Glad Remember Me won the Oscars Best Song. In Philippines, during "Todos los Santos" people go to cemeteries to visit our love ones on Nov. 1st (All Saints Day evening) for All Souls Day Nov. 2nd. In Mexico, "Dia de los Muertos" people visit cemeteries for their love ones between Oct. 31st to Nov 2nd.
this movie makes me cry so hard because it reminds me of the way my mother lost her father... My mother was 8 years old and her father leaved her house for business, but when he was going back home a car hitted him... so my mom kept waiting for him but he never returned (my mom is 51 now and this still hurts her). Even tho I dont believe in life after death, I cant be sure about it, so I hope that in the future my mom can meet her father again the same way coco reunited with her father... anyways good reaction
Btw if you were wondering what does the word “Coco” actually means, its just a nickname, (or more like a shortened version) since that name (the real version) it’s a really common name for grandmas and grandaunts in Mexico (actually we call my grandaunt “aunt Coco”, but my cousins, her grandkids call her “grandma Coco” cause she has that name) and the real name is Socorro, and all the “Socorro’s” we call them “Coco”.
according to Aztecs, all dogs, in particular xolos, Mexican hairless dogs, could cross back and forth from the land of the dead, the Mictlan. That's why Dante is so carefree in the land of the dead. if you had a dog and were good to it, it will surely help you cross over safely to Mictlan once you die. their help is greatly appreciated, since the road to Mictlan is nefarius. but roaming about, all dogs know shortcuts, so they'll keep you on the best route.
So, in the actual belief, you don’t need a picture to come over but you do need to metaphorically be there as in having someone think of you. It’s not as visual a cue. Also, you’re right. They don’t need guards. That made me kinda uncomfortable.
Here in Ecuador we don't say Day of the Dead, we say Day of the Dead, and we have been celebrating it for centuries. The indigenous people of Ecuador have honored their dead since ancient times. When the Spaniards arrived and introduced All Saints' Day, which is celebrated on November 1, the locals made this holiday their own. All Souls' Day, as it is celebrated today, is therefore a combination of Catholic religious celebrations and indigenous traditions. The government decrees a holiday on November 2nd every year and all over the country a colada morada is made with Guaguas de pan, just yesterday 2/Nov/2023 people go to the cemeteries to visit their relatives, taking with them any kind of food to later sit next to a tombstone with the whole family to eat. It is understandable that Mexico being in North America is more related to the film industry and many other things in the USA and therefore stands out more, but that's ok, anyway it is nice to see a Mexican brother receiving recognition. Greetings to all from 🇪🇨
Even though human spirits roaming around don't exist, as an artist I say that this film is wonderful, the colors, the clothes, the style of the characters, it's all very beautiful. Edit: music brings back good and bad memories, it's like a ''portal'' of feelings, I personally can't go a day without at least listening to a song.
Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco", which translates to "A little crazy". I love how they animated this movie and wrote the songs, on top of honoring Mexican culture and customs. (Despite me DESPISING Ernesto De La Cruz, even before learning of his villainous nature). It's *IMPOSSIBLE* to avoid crying while Miguel is singing "Remember Me" with Mamá Coco. Being Mexican-American, what makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, going into 2024, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢

10:43, no he's not a spirit per se. Dante is a Xoloitzcuintli. It's believed that a Xolo dog will help the newly dead to cross a body of water, either a river or a sea, to the land of the dead.
I absolutely lost it when I saw this movie originally. It had me thinking of my abuela who’d passed 6 years prior. It also reminds me of the family I can’t see because they live in another country. Safe to say this movie wrecks me every time I watch it. The music is amazing too!
This movie has been one of my favorites. However, now, I cry every time I watch it after losing both of my parents 6 months apart from each other. Such an amazing movie.
The worst part is that "stealing" the DeLaCruz guitar, is actually recovering it from the real thief. The afterlife officials are incompetent. So Miguel should have never been sent to the afterlife to begin with. However. . . Miguel might not have learned the truth.
Such a lovely and emotional story, definitely got me crying at the final death scene I remember crying in the dark of a movie theatre because I was scared of myself getting older and forgetting my parents when they die and the thought of being forgotten,, anyway! If you notice when Ernesto joins Imelda on stage he changes the key of the song to put it out of Imelda's range so she couldn't keep singing and follow him. Just another example of his gargantuan ego and need to hog the stage.

Well, it wasn't a nude photo...it was more of a parody of Life Drawing classes, with a nude model. Because they're in the Land of the Dead, so it's Dead Drawing.
Halloween spawn from anicent harvest festivals, pagan traditins, and a splash of roman traditions all rolled into one and blended with all saints day thrown in to morph over centries into Halloween... the day of the dead doesnt spawn from halloween.... i dont know if the similar theme of dead traversingnto the living around harvest shares some anicent origins, but the modern holidays have nothing to do with eachother

Woow! Pepita made me cry! So hard!
Love this movie so much
When i first watched this is social studies made me feel emotional
Such a lovely and emotional story, definitely got me crying at the final death scene I remember crying in the dark of a movie theatre because I was scared of myself getting older and forgetting my parents when they die and the thought of being forgotten,, anyway! Loved your reactions and I’ve recently subbed. I have a request , can you please watch the movie coralline and upload it on the 30th of oct? I’m turning 17 on that day
Abulita is like"boi bbn if you dont drop that guitar I'll beat your bottom
Día de Muertos is NOT the version of Halloween in México.
I recomend you the video for Ford Quarterman: "MI PRIMER DÍA DE MUERTOS EN MÉXICO".

Unibrow = Frieda Kahlo famous Mexican artist, among other things.
Family is Everything ❤
I loved this movie he’s my 3rd favorite Pixar movie
In Mexico it’s believed that dogs can see the dead so that’s why Dante could cross.
Día de muertos is coming 🥰
Back then this always made me cry
Thanks for sharing your true feelings, watching this video while setting the ofrenda for my FAMILY, my sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and some close friends. Love our Mexican tradition
If you notice when Ernesto joins Imelda on stage he changes the key of the song to put it out of Imelda's range so she couldn't keep singing and follow him. Just another example of his gargantuan ego and need to hog the stage.
in a year Abel and his Sister can play instrument, amazing🎉🎉
03:32 - 03:36 So cute.☺💕 04:08 - 04:09 OH,YES,YOU ARE! I _PROMISE YOU_ you are! 28:21 - 28:38 , 34:19 , 34:57 Told you!🥺🥺🥺❤❤❤❤
06:11 - 06:23 *YES!* And I *HATE* that!🤬💢 31:34 - 31:42 Best line of the whole movie!🤣🤣🤣🤣💞 34:42 - 34:47 It's not that,it's that the Day of the Dead is over.
I must say, though,I don't think anyone will really _forget_ Ernesto. Some will believe the Rivera are lying and he was the Good guy the whole time, others will know/believe the truth and probably hate him,but they will still all remember him,in 1 way or another.
P.S. Pepita MVP!😎🐯💚
When Miguel finds out Ernesto De La Cruz is a no good backstabbing murderer, we go from 😍 to 🤬 at De La Cruz.
Remember me 😭😢😢😢
Dante is the biggest derpy mcderp derp derpypants I’ve ever seen
I love him ❤❤❤❤❤

This Movie now....I Missed my Grandma who passed away last year.... 😭😭😭😭😭😔😔😔
This movie made me cry so hard!
Well, it wasn't a nude photo...it was more of a parody of Life Drawing classes, with a nude model.
Because they're in the Land of the Dead, so it's Dead Drawing.
The piñatas at minute 1:54 are Pixar characters!
Miguel went from chavo to Mijo with Hector over a the course of the movie
34:50 he can also take guitar cause it’s not diade los muertos anymore and that’s the only day you can get cursed

Forget you 🎉
Halloween spawn from anicent harvest festivals, pagan traditins, and a splash of roman traditions all rolled into one and blended with all saints day thrown in to morph over centries into Halloween... the day of the dead doesnt spawn from halloween.... i dont know if the similar theme of dead traversingnto the living around harvest shares some anicent origins, but the modern holidays have nothing to do with eachother
We celebrate day of the day every 2 of november ITS Beautyful
Day of the Dead is September 2 🤙🏻
You know you messed up if a literal animal that was supposed to help the dead is angry at you
I'm willing to see Ernesto De La Cruz's grave after the revelation of the truth of his murderous theft because I bet it had someone desiccate it.
❤️❤️❤️
