I hate sounding like a blind hater cause I’m really not trying to be but I just don’t understand what people find enjoyable about a record that sounds like this. I checked out Portal as an extreme metal fan since I heard Phil Anselmo talking about them, but this atmospheric black metal type stuff has just always confused me more than anything. Every component of this albums mix is taking up the same frequency ranges so I can barely even make anything out and I just don’t understand how anyone can enjoy a song that way let alone a whole 20 minute long album. I’m all for raw sounding unconventional mixes that aren’t super polished sounding just as long as I can still make out each instrument and the vocals. Once again, I’m not blindly hating, I just don’t understand lol
Taste is subjective and you shouldn't have to defend your opinions on any band to anyone.. at least you're not just saying "lol this band are shit!" like a lot of people would. I didn't understand Portal when I first heard them, I thought they were an elaborate piss take, no structure and just making stupid noises on their guitars but one day much much later I had a weird and overwhelming urge to listen to them one day after not listening to them for probabably 6-7 years.. it sort of called for me, without sounding dramatic, I gave Ion a listen and it made sense and suddenly clicked just how brutal and brilliant Portal is. It's not meant to be an enjoyable listen, for me listening to Portal is like overhearing a total stranger talk about their innermost fears, deep rooted terrors that only they can comprehend the start and end of but now through a exposure I'm now aware of and know more than I did about those fears and have to try and make sense of it in my own head. A perverse yet empathetic infatuation. If you want to get in to them, Vexovoid is a bit more accessible than their other albums.. the production is easier on the ear at least but no one's going to think any less of you for not liking Portal if you don't like Portal.
@tsargoyle that is bloody well put. Not all art is actually created with the intention of being enjoyed. I don’t think Portal even intend to make ‘music’ in the standard sense of the word, they aim to make sound. An abyss. Something that defies conventional analysis and theory. I’d say they succeeded.
@@tsargoyle Totally agree with everything you said! I think I once heard it put as something to the effect of "Portal doesn't concern themselves with trying to sound pleasing to the ear and I love them for it". I wouldn't even quite call them enjoyable to listen to, but I absolutely love them. They're a tricky one to pin down. I'd personally go Avow as a starting point - kind of a middle ground between the murkiness of Vexovoid and earlier and the shrillness of Ion.
This was released two years after my bday:)

Portal is what metal should aspire to be, an awful and confusing experience that shows you new limits of the human condition. IMO at least
