  • Charles flies the Ercoupe from Nevada County Airport to Georgetown. We camp next to the runway, and explore! My first attempt at talking to the camera in the studio, hopefully I'll get better at that with practice. :)

Lucky kid. Excellent "positive transfer of control," as we say in the airline flying business.

Reminds me of many long years ago, 1960s, I would fly out of Antioch in an Ercoupe, with a sleeping bag and a couple of tarps, to the airshows in the Valley, and sleep under the wing. Put one tarp on the ground, and one over the wing.
I had an interesting experience in an Ercoupe as a student pilot doing a cross-country, and landing at Lincoln; I was not accustomed to the broad runway in wide-open spaces, and I rotated and stalled terribly high. It was so high I had time to realize what I had done and brace for impact, but it never came. The low wing created a cushion of air, and the Ercoupe lighted like a bird, and rolled about fifty feet to a stop. Don't try that at home.

What a lovely way to play with your son! What a lovely, lovely airplane. Flying it is the adventure, but your son makes it super-special. Thank you for sharing.

I was in the USAF stationed at Travis AFB 35 years ago, I flew with my wife and children all over northern California and visited many of the places in your videos. Watching you and Charles brings back the memories from a lot of great adventures. I enjoy watching them. Keep up the good work.

Used to go to the annual “Gathering of Taildraggers” event at Georgetown years ago. Of course there would always be two or three Ercoupes show up despite the title of the event ha,ha. Nice to see the campground is still open. I must go back and pay a visit. Thanks for sharing this.

A fantastic father/son adventure. I'm teaching my 6 year old twin grand daughters how to fly an Ercoupe - on XPlane sim that is. They are loving it.

I love that airport! So peaceful. I've flown in there with my Pacer out of LHM a few times. I hiked around on the trail to the campground. Would really like to camp there sometime. Good to see you and the son having a great time flying and camping. Thanks for the video, James.

Love this one James. That Charles is a natural, love the fact he is using instruments to stay straight and level. Great job Charles, you are a real pilot. You can fly my Ercoupe anyday.

Ran a sports car hillclimb up to Georgetown in the early '60's and enjoyed a community day with the locals. Great folks, even greater memories.

Scary weather there James. How long were you stuck there? Overnight? Sleep on the FBO’s couch or take the loaner car into town to a no-tell-motel?

when I hear Georgetown, I think of the one in the east. When I was near Oskkosh, I saw what appeared to be a red painted ercoupe. good luck with camping.

I had a Ercoupe in the nineties, along with a Cessna 172, and a 175. The Ercoupe was the most fun, and cheaper on gas, it was also easiest to fly. Wish I could find it. Can't remember the N number expect that it had a H, a 0, a 7, and I think a 4. It left from Arkansas, and went to Texas painted white with a red stripe. I got to talk to Mr. Weick at a Ercoupe fly-in, just south of Russleville, Arkansas. Some called it "The Chicken Ranch Fly-in, because it was at a huge chicken ranch, complete with a Saturday night ho-down and all the fried eggs you could eat for breakfast. He was a very nice and interesting man to talk to, with a remarkable memory.

It really was a very nice camping place. I live where we carry guns to defend against predator's. Bears, cougars, bobcats, and even snakes can cause you to have a really effed up day. I know that California is not a 2nd Amendment friendly kind of place, but it is very beautiful. What is your budget for your Ercoupe? I am buying a '46 fabric winged one. I have no idea what the annual upkeep will be. Cheers.

Guns are such an alien concept to me, coming from England. But you do have a lot more wildlife out here!
My Ercoupe budget for maintenance is about $1000 in a 'cheap year', and averages about $1500/yr. I do 'owner assist' work with my IA, to keep costs down. Insurance is about $600 a year for me.

Too cute!!! Suggestion: The copilot needs a couple of pillows so he can pilot the plane as well as the pilot.

Yes, I always forget to grab a cushion until we're in the cockpit. He just had a blanket under him this time. I also think he feels little safer sitting low down?!
