    • @LJ-ht4zs

No woman deserves that - no child deserves that. The people who made the Baby Burlesque shows were perverts. Decades ago I was walking in NYC on a Sunday and there was a very sexually seductive picture of a very young child on the cover of a music album. I wanted to smash in the widow and tear up the cover. (At the time I worked for Child Protective Services) We seem to "look away"from obvious sexual abuse themes re young children. Brook Shields when she was age 10 (thanks to her sick mother) Wasn't surprised that she suffered Post partum depression after the birth of her child. Look how Jeffrey Epstein got away with sexual perversion of young girls for decades. (How many famous people in the arts, business, politics etc participated)

*You missed a few connecting details in Shirley’s MGM visit.*
The part she was “auditioning for” at MGM, with Arthur Freed-was actually *FOR* the role of Dorothy, in *wizard of oz!!!!*
The only reason she *didn’t* get the role as Dorothy, is literally because Arthur was *INFURIATED* when he exposed himself and she started nervously giggling!
She told the whole horrifying story in detail, when she was a guest on (I think it was Larry king’s…) talk show.
*Basically the TL;DR of the story is this…*
Shirley and her mother were separated from each other immediately after arriving to MGM studios. Her mom was taken to one office and Shirley was taken to Arthur’s office- where he promptly tried to use the “casting couch” with her.
Within a few minutes of the giggling incident happening- she and her mom were escorted out.
    When they got to their car, Shirley started crying and told her mom what happened in the room …and how did that b i t c h respond to her little girl telling her something horrible like that…? _SHE STARTED LAUGHING_ and said;
*”if you think THAT was bad-you don’t even want to know what was happening in the room I was in!!!”*
She just laughed it off like a big joke and basically told Shirley to “get used to it”….
*I truly despise the entertainment industry and the repugnant stage parents that will do/allow anything to happen to their children- for money...* 🤬

thank you for clarifying that. it makes a whole lot of sense why her money was gone then. she trusted her parents and they failed her in every single way. she deserved so much better and her mother just let it happen. especially as a father, knowing grown men are lusting over his baby girl, is absolutely repulsive. but i guess the money to them was worth more than their child’s innocence and any real attempt at a childhood.

On the contrary, I think it's not just the mom's reaction that's questionable. I think her minizing and rationalising reflect's how society treated women back then. I think the mom was propositioned too in the worse and when hearing her child was presented that way made her think, "Well, at least you aren't almost r*ped and just flashed... Well Hollywood."

The information that was missing though is the reference to the original work that the baby-burlesque shorts were copying and to put them into the zeitgeist of the moment.
When reviewing history we cannot remove events from the atmosphere and culture in which they took place. This is a time when kids were commonly put to use. Contraception was not common and people had more kids than they could feed so abuse was very common and kids were expected to contribute from a very young age. My grandfather born in 1910 was sent away at the age of 7 to work for his own food on the next farm. Imagine sending your child away at 7 to work for food. Beyond horrible! But that was the hard reality of life back then.

It is agreed that the BABY BURLESQUE films were made in questionable taste. But they were the training ground for Shirley. The degree of "abuse" may be a relative thing taken on an individual case. The most obvious one was in KID IN AFRICA where a wire was used to make a group of Black kids fall down after they couldn't coordinate in unison. Their legs were cut in the process.

But at the time of Shirley Temple, there was a Depression on and jobs were scarce. So if a family had a kid that the movie studios were interested in, they saw this as a source of income. In so many other cases, the parents did exploit the child by living off its earnings. So the blame of exploitation cannot be placed solely on the studios, but on the parents who used their children as a source of income whether or not they could work. And in some cases they used this as an excuse not to work.

Child stars' abuse and trauma seems to be a pattern in Hollywood, and what's sad is that it still happens to this day :/ Once parents get their child into the entertainment industry, most of them stop caring about their well-being... I will never fathom how can a family depend financially on a CHILD. After all she's been put through, I'm glad Shirley was able to not fall into depression and lived the rest of her life away from Hollywood.
PS. I'd like to watch a video about Judy Garland, but maybe after that you'd like to talk about Jackie Coogan too, Sloan? :) His situation is similar to Shirley's - his mother and step-father spend his money on expensive things, so he sued them and won. Because of him, the Coogan Act was enacted.

I wish the Coogan act would also ban stylists in Hollywood from dressing kids like adults - like millie Bobby brown, I always felt that her outfits, were one reason why she got such sexualized comments. But her and so many other kids/teens in Hollywood, when people call their stylists out for making these kids and teens look like adults, they see it as a form of "bullying" because they don’t know any better, as it has been drilled into their heads to think that it's ok for the stylist to make them look older than what they are...

I used to watch all of her shows on tapes every morning as a kid before going to school. It looked so innocent as a kid, not understanding what I'm watching half the time. But now. Realizing how she really struggled on that set like a lot of child actors ruins the little good parts of my childhood I remember. Now I just feel guilty I was a part of this. It actually makes me want to cry since I have a baby girl now and I could NEVER as a parent let my kid do THIS. Also with the wizard of Oz, I remember watching that on tapes too. Ugh I hate how they treated little girls/boys back then. It's NASTY.

Now that I'm older, it is awful to hear she was just prayed on by every single person that crossed her path including her parents. Makes total sense why she left the business as an adult. There were always power hungry people in the movie business and still are obviously. Always offering roles or stardom in exchange for something. It is disgusting and still happening. I'm glad more people are speaking out and not just letting it happen anymore.

"Adult emotions of love and grief glissade across the mask of childhood, a childhood skin-deep." No. She is a child. She was an actress that was abused and taught to do and say what she was told or be punished. Predators always love to tell us "you are mature for your age" when we are just children. It is what we want to hear when we are young and unable to get adults to take us seriously and predators know exactly what to do and say to manipulate that in their favor. A child is still a child even if they are "acting like an adult". They're lying to themselves as much as they are lying to the children they take advantage of because everyone knows being attracted to children and their mannerisms is wrong. They will say whatever they can to try and mask that these children are children and not objects of desire to them because of their youth and ignorance.
These men are gross. Just think about all of the actors and actresses, regardless of age, that have been coaxed or threatened into silence. The industry hasn't changed. Some sets have psychologists on sets, people specifically hired to help actors with scandalous scenes and represent actors if they do not want to film them, but even then, actors are scared of being labeled as "difficult"- a label that spreads quickly to other people in the industry. Saying no, asking for changes, etc. can easily get you ousted from the stories I've read. We need change. The people at the top feel they are untouchable. Other predators seeing these people get away with things shows them that they can get away with abusing others as well. It's sick.

As a mother of 2 young kids I can't imagine my kids going through what alot of these child stars had to go through. I'm sure there are many people that aren't as familiar with her personal life and it's a good time of year because the holidays always make me think of her due to her version of Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas from Meet me in St. Louis and she did a Christmas Special with her kids in 1963 at her house that people could watch on YT.

Shirley temple was my childhood. I remember going to the library and picking out the cd from the isle and curling up at home with my mom.

I am incredibly uncomfortable with the imagery and subject matter, and I'm only a few minutes in.
Absolutely insane. Thank you for covering this wildly fascinating person's life and career.

I remember back in the days. During commercials they would advertise Sherley Temple VHS videos. 😂😅 They’d be like “re-live the classics now for only $19.99. Order now! And we will include another one of her classics.” 😂

So screwed up what she went through!! Also YES to a story on Judy Garland as well. Btw, the original Wizard of Oz VHS showed a guy hanging himself in the background. I remember literally wandering what i was seeing whenever i watched it on my vcr because i loved that movie. I also remember my mom and a friend taking about it! They actually cut it out of the movie and released it without that part. It's definitely wild!

I’m so glad you made this video! I grew up watching all of her work, as a kid in the 80’s. I wanted to be just like her. It’s so gross to dissect these roles now. Wow. The entire video I was wondering where her mom was during all of this. So unfortunate.
I would love for you to make a Judy Garland video! ❤️

I used to watch all of Shirley Temples films when I was a child. Once i got in my 20s a UA-cam video was in my recommendeds and my innocence died. To know that she went through all that yet she still radiated on film made my heart ache. I’m so glad her story is out..
