    I bought a fiddle fig about two years ago and nearly killed it. I changed the soil, moved it to a better location and bought a soil meter. It thankfully recovered and has been doing just fine. Soil meters are cheap and save a lot of headaches lol This summer I will move it into a larger pot and attempt to encourage branching and such. I just recently purchased another one, larger with branches already, for my bed room. I hope to get my first one sprouting big like my new one.

      I don’t recommend using any kind of gravel in bottom of pot. It causes water to pool around gravels and roots are drawn to the water. Then root rot can set in. Then she has the perfect product to fight the root rot, her Root supplement! She’s in this business to sell products! Also you don’t need to buy her $30 a bag soil. Any fast draining soil will work.

    Thanks Claire for the amazing tips and quick videos. I have 3 fiddle leaf figs in my house potted in Lechuza self watering pots and my plants have thrive and grow non stop since I started using those pots. I’ve been hesitant to put any fertilizer or plant food on them since the water is in a tank underneath the pot. If I want to use the Plant Food and Minerals you are recommending would it be safe to add both the water tank?

    I ordered 4 baby fiddle leafs, 2 were fairly big for saplings, 1 had 5 leaves, 1 with 6 leaves, they both had good sized roots. But the other 2 were teenie tiny, one only had a single tiny leaf with 10 or less short roots, the other one has 2 leaves and longer roots, after planting these two together, I had to unplant them because the tiniest one lost it's single leaf. I'm hoping to save it so I put them in water for now until I see more growth, I've already seen root growth on the bigger one. The bigger 2 Figgies I potted together and used fiddle leaf fig soil, a couple handfuls of fine grain sand, bark, I used gravel at the bottom of the pot with lots of holes in the pot as you suggested and added my "special ingredient." I looked up what contents are in Western African soil, trying to replicate it's natural habitat, and discovered that there's lots of clay and iron in the soil there. I live in Indiana and out of the 6 soil types we have 4 of them and have some of the best farming soil in the world so I added some Indiana clay soil to my figgy's soil. I'm amazed at how well this plant is doing! It's only been 4 days, zero shock, no drooping whatsoever, even after these babies were in a box for a week while being shipped to me. In fact, when I decided to unplant the tiny babies to put them into water, I examined the roots on the bigger two Figgies and already the roots have grown and branched out through the soil and I have a new green leaf bud that wasn't there on day one and another one that's about to pop out! I've been taking pictures everyday to monitor progress, the leaves themselves are slightly bigger too! I'm amazed at the progress after only 4 days, I didn't even know roots could branch into the soil in such a short time! I've also been bringing the Figgies with me outside when my children play for a few hours everyday and 2 of the days there's been a lot of wind so I didn't need to shake my Figgy. I really think the clay soil is helping, I would definitely recommend it!

    You may change your opinion on loading the bottom of your pot with rocks, and then putting dirt on top by conducting an experiment in clear cups by putting gravel and then dirt in one, and then putting dirt in the other with drainage holes in the bottom of both of them you’ll see that the water puddles on top of the gravel and just creates a wet layer in a more important area of the plants root system.

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  4 місяці тому

      Great point! If you use stones or pebbles or rocks, the water will pool in between the rocks and the root system is attracted to the standing water which can increase the chances of a root infection. Our Smart Gravel product is made from recyclable materials and allows water to flow through thus eliminating the worry of a root issue. Happy Growing!

      I check my moisture with each watering but only put about 10 oz of water mixed with fiddle food once a week and I water the outer edges of the pot. I water ever 1-2 weeks. It is just enough water and never too much. My plant is in a 10” pot right now.

      Light! It might need more energy from the light to grow more branches and leaves. Place the plant directly in front of and up against your brightest window and water thoroughly when the top inches of soil are dry. • @FiddleLeafFigPlant

      Both will be fine so long as there are multiple holes on the bottom for drainage. Terra cotta does tend to wick the moisture away quick so you may need to check if your plant needs watering more often. Happy Growing!

      It’s best not to place any type of gravel in bottom of pot. Gravels cause water to pool around them then the roots are drawn to this water and root rot will set in. It’s best to use a fast draining cactus soil like Black Gold Cactus Soil and add a couple cups orchid mix and handful of pine bark for extra drainage. Then you don’t need to add gravel to bottom.

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Robin, that is a great question! Yes, you can trim bottom leaves off to shape your plant to look more tree-like. Remember to use sharp, sterile pruning scissors or shears and not to remove more than 10% of the total amount of leaves on the plant. Remove slowly over time and you'll be pleased with your progress!

    • @martyspence8590
      @martyspence8590 Рік тому +1

      It’s best not to remove bottom leaves unless they are damaged more than 50% because they provide nutrients and energy to your plant. When the plant has exhausted all the nutrients from the leaves the leaves will turn yellow then brown and the drop off on their own. I studied Plant Science and Biology for three years and I know this to be fact!

    my fiddleleaf grows WAY too fast! Can I slow it down? I purchased a box-store fig under 2' last spring and it's literally hitting 6 feet! I didn't really know what to do with it. We can't carry it around anymore! Help!

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 роки тому +1

      What a fantastic problem to have! Your plant loves how you are caring for it! One way to make it grow slower, is to keep it in the pot it is in. You don't want to repot into a larger pot as that encourages the root system to grow, meaning a bigger, taller plant. Keep doing what you are doing as your plant is very healthy! Another option is to prune your plant so that it encourages branches to grow at the point where you cut. Happy Growing!

      If you feel your plant is suffering from root rot you need to pull it out of pot and check the roots. If they are black or brown then it’s rot! Healthy roots are tan or white. Trim the rotted roots off with sterile shears and wash all roots. Then repot in a fast draining cactus soil like Black Gold Cactus soil. Join me on the Fiddle Leaf Fig Q&A Group for additional help.

      That is a great tip as these plants are native to outdoor conditions so they do best when outdoors!

    I bought a 5 ft one now its like 10 ft. My husband is freaked out by it but did manage to ask if he could try to smoke meat in one of its leaves. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    I got fiddle leaf fig. How old is a 1.6 feet fiddle leaf fig ?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  Рік тому +1

      Sounds like it is still a young plant! You'll know when the plant is mature when it has a thick, bark covered, woody trunk.

    My fiddle leaf trunk isn't very strong the new leaves are always falling/ bending over

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 роки тому

      That is a common question! I recommend giving your plant a gentle 'wiggle' and rotating regularly so that the trunk can straighten and thicken over time.

      You must realize your leaves are large and heavy, get a stake and gently attach it to the stem. Don’t share or wiggle the stem as you might break the hair roots. Just set it outside in shade on a breezy day and let he wind gently shade it.

    I used your suggestion about the light and put my fiddle outside for about 5 days on vacation. Now all its leaves are burnt….

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 роки тому +1

      It's important when you place them outside to make sure they are under a shaded area like a patio or pergola. If you place them in direct sun, they will burn. These plants need to be acclimated slowly to any direct sunlight. Once your plant recovers from the sunburn, it will begin to grow new leaves again.

      @@FiddleLeafFigPlant I just took her inside and I'm hoping the brown leaves don't fall off.. there's only one that is completely brown and pruning. Should I take the leaf off, or leave it?
