And to think, that used to be an artesian well with a plume they said was so large you could not drown in it! In 2011, in the drought, there was dust on top of the water downstream at Blue Hole. Broke my heart! That area was part of my childhood!

That’s a little big for the creeks in this area. I have a Delta 20 Tandem. I only use it on lakes and once in the ocean. You want a 10 to 12 or max 13 foot kayak either sit on or big open cockpit. You’ll be getting in and out quite a bit and not sure t would want to damage the bottom of that expensive thermoformed kayak.
I love your videos! my husband and i are very new to kayaking and have only done rentals. We would love to buy our own and start going more often. Jacobs well is a must do for us! I have a few questions... 1. How do you know the conditions prior to going to places like this? Would it be safe for athletic and fit but new to kayaking. 2. What do you suggest as far as transportation? take 2 vehicles, bike, walk? 3. What time of year do you think would be best to visit this trail? Would the water conditions be constant year round? I would love for you to do a beginners series and focus on some of the above questions. I think what holds me back mostly is the uncertainties of when and where to go and how to know if its safe, what problems we could expect and how to overcome them. Thank you so much! Im a huge fan already!
Thank you so much! So I've started to do a series about beginner planning etc. Check out my two most recent videos and see if that helps you out, more on the way but those should help get you on your first trip at least! I don't recommend paddling jacobs well just because it is so hard to get to. 1. Check the USGS flow rates. 75 and up in the hill country generally means good flow. 150 cfs and up is where you truly want to be though. 2. Take at least two cars, leave one at the take out, then drive to the launch. 3. Spring and fall are best since that's when it rains most and fills up the rivers. Summer is notoriously low and winter can lend to some good paddling just not much rain though.
Awesome video! just discovered your channel and really enjoy it ! keep it up! one question though about this day trip: can you do a round trip on water in a inflatable kayak on this portion ? thanks!

I’m just a beginner here sorry for all the questions. Your videos convinced me to buy some kayaks! So one of my biggest concerns is really where to leave my vehicles how do you decide where to leave them?
This is a really tough paddle and requires a long route to the put in. There are so many low water dams that I honestly will never do it again. It’s just not worth it when you have places like the Guadalupe so close. Leaving vehicles is tricky because you don’t want to get broken into or towed! That’s just as big of a deal as the section you’re researching
Is there a hiking trail to Jacobs Well? If so do you have to make reservations to hike? I will be in the Round Rock area for about 10 days in a week or so and would really like to check this site out while I am there. Another Awesome video man! Thanks for sharing!
Kentucky Woodsman there is a trail down to the well! Super easy hike and I believe there’s a few other trails around too. You do need a reservation but if you go during the week it’ll be easy to get in. Round rock is only about an hour away so it is real close. Have fun and let me know how it goes!

Man I’d be hard pressed to take an Oru down rapids. It’s really meant for flatwater touring. For rapids you’d be better off doing a hard body or something like an alpacka raft. Those are very durable and can take a beating. Check out my packraft video to see what they can do
cwolff that’s definitely something I’d be open to. Just have to come up with some unique tips because there are a few how to kayak camp videos out there. I’ll look into it!
cwolff that’s a good idea. I haven’t seen one for TX rivers, especially the hill country. Could be good to discuss distances, laws and regulations, and other nuances specific to TX
Kyle Dryden I think I’m going to do a gear video this fall before the holiday season. Now that I’ve had a few years to hone in the most useful items, feels like we could make a good video about it

I'd say a lot of has to do with the song and what sort of vibe you want in that section. Other clips just look cool in slow motion, I'll usually watch everything at regular speed, then again in slow motion to see what I like better. A tip would to mix it up though, don't want too much slow motion. I've been guilty of that many times!
Basically yes. I have the GoPro on a buoyant hand grip and then wedge it in between my chest and life jacket for the POV shots. That way I can quickly grab it and film someone else or cool scenery.
Warren Simon definitely! buffalo bayou has a bunch of launch spots. I like the section from 610 to downtown. Charlotte Lake is about 45 minutes east of town. I don’t do much open water or salt water kayaking so I can’t speak for the gulf. But a lot of cool spots!

I ordered a Oru Kayak, I wonder if it can handle some of those rapids from the other videos.
Man I’d be hard pressed to take an Oru down rapids. It’s really meant for flatwater touring. For rapids you’d be better off doing a hard body or something like an alpacka raft. Those are very durable and can take a beating. Check out my packraft video to see what they can do
I thought Jacob well was by appointment only
It is! This was a long time ago
can yall make a basics/how to vid for kayak camping?
cwolff that’s definitely something I’d be open to. Just have to come up with some unique tips because there are a few how to kayak camp videos out there. I’ll look into it!
cool, maybe it could be focused on tx rivers or something. i'll be on the lookout for whatever comes though
cwolff that’s a good idea. I haven’t seen one for TX rivers, especially the hill country. Could be good to discuss distances, laws and regulations, and other nuances specific to TX
@@GatewoodBrown I like this idea... maybe include equipment you use (camp gear.. cool grill... ect)
Kyle Dryden I think I’m going to do a gear video this fall before the holiday season. Now that I’ve had a few years to hone in the most useful items, feels like we could make a good video about it
Can I still do this trip during the offseason or will I not be allowed to swim in Jacobs well?
You will not be able to do this during off season
I am going to Wimberley in early November and am thinking about giving this a try. Do you think I could paddle downstream and then back upstream since I will be by myself?
That would be very tough. I’d recommend paddling the Blanco river instead!

Amazing video and gear footage. I look forward to taking my wife here, can anyone tell me what type of kayaks they use in this video?
H. E. Thanks for stopping by! I was in an Old Town Vapor 10’ and Bennett was in a sun dolphin Aruba 8 SS. Make sure to subscribe, working on several videos right now!
Very cool, keep up the awesome work!@@GatewoodBrown
Why did you opt for a 10 footer vs an 8 footer like Bennett?
Could you make it with a canoe? Very good video.
Daniel Flowers I would not recommend that. Not enough water for a canoe. Try the blanco nearby
@@GatewoodBrown I will try that. Are you aware if any places in Texas that you can Canoe down and camp anywhere along the water?
what do you use to edit your videos? great quality
i live in Houston have my own gear and truck would love to venture out with you boys, been having trouble finding people my age to kayak with.
Check out some of the local kayak Facebook groups! People organize paddle trips on there all the time
@@GatewoodBrown not on fb but plans are being made for Brazos and Colorado
Those are both good options!
At about 5:15 was that a baby palm right of center on the screen?
Hmm I’m not sure!
@@GatewoodBrown I looked again. It's at 5:17. It surely looks like a palm, and if it is, that would probably be even further north for a natural palm than Palmeto state parks palms.
What editing software do you use? Like your videos keep it up.
Get Outdoors Today thanks! Final Cut Pro X. Simple to use and powerful when needed
Thanks I will have to check it out.
Where did yall start from?
It’s bone dry so you can’t kayak it right now
What camera do you record with?
Mostly GoPro, with an A7III for the big rig
I want to start doing this and I REALLY wanna take my kids but like to the very gentle parts .. can you recommend where to get in for this
With kids I’d recommend going to the park. They have wonderful trails and you can go swimming during the swim season
you do the llano river yet?
How do yall even get back to your cars?
We always take multiple cars
What kind of sandals are you wearing? Wore some vibram toe shoes last time I went kayaking and it wasnt very fun!
Asa Pelt we both wear chacos on the river. They’ve been super functional for us! From Hiking to kayaking, they’re great for the outdoors
Gatewood Brown awesome thanks! I just bought some Tevas that look a lot like yours! They’re great!
Asa Pelt Tevas are fantastic! You’ll be able to use them for years to come
Where did you guys put in? I would love to make this same journey!
WEIRD PLACES PHOTOGRAPHY Launched just outside of Wimberley
Judging by my google maps and .6 mile parking situation, I'm guessing he got in at 12 and parked at the church, at least that's where I'll be attempting this from!
How do you decide what's going to be in slow motion ?
I'd say a lot of has to do with the song and what sort of vibe you want in that section. Other clips just look cool in slow motion, I'll usually watch everything at regular speed, then again in slow motion to see what I like better. A tip would to mix it up though, don't want too much slow motion. I've been guilty of that many times!
What is your camera setup .
Just answered in your other comment!
I am Your big fan sir.
Thank you! I’m a big fan of you as well
Sir which is your favourite adventurous activity.
Hmm probably skiing!
Sir have you ever visited Gulmarg
I have not. Never been to India
What kayaks are those? Im thinking of buying one :)
Old town vapor 10! Check out my most recent video which is an in depth review of it
So you use your GoPro handheld and a chest mount I guess
Basically yes. I have the GoPro on a buoyant hand grip and then wedge it in between my chest and life jacket for the POV shots. That way I can quickly grab it and film someone else or cool scenery.
Where was your start and stop spots? My first thought was how do we get back to the truck lol

Did you end up at bluehole?
Your buddy looks like a hipster mom from L.A. lmao
You know of any spots to go kayaking in Houston?
Warren Simon definitely! buffalo bayou has a bunch of launch spots. I like the section from 610 to downtown. Charlotte Lake is about 45 minutes east of town. I don’t do much open water or salt water kayaking so I can’t speak for the gulf. But a lot of cool spots!
Went to both spots and loved it!! Definitely want to try some spots from your page next time. Keep up with that awesome videos and thanks!!
Warren Simon get after it! I’m heading out to a new river this weekend so be on the lookout for some new places going forward
Where is this located
And now it's all dry
So sad!
The big fish swimming at 4:04 in the bottom left corner! WATERS SO CLEAR!!!
The water was crazy clear! Site casting for days haha
So your saying I don't need a reservation and pay to get into Jacob's Well?
Well, it’s not quite that simple haha. This is a very complicated method that I don’t actually recommend doing. Paying the $10 helps to preserve this place and then you’ll have a bunch of trails to explore too! The park is a wonderful place
Anybody else see the giant fish under the swing at 4:08
Good eye! That biggun was a big ole fish
My names Bennett and I ain't in it ! Ha
Haha!
At the 5 minute and 55 second mark to 57 seconds did anyone spot what looks like a human head carved on the tree?
Haha crazy! I’ll have to look out for that
Music could use a flush.
Thanks for watching all the vids! Haha does that mean you're not into the music in this one?
